Tope Alabi addresses rivalry among gospel singers

Gospel singer Tope Alabi has expressed concerns about the growing rivalry and “fake love” among gospel artists.

While performing at the ‘Celebrating Jesus 7.0’ concert in Ibadan, she emphasised the need for unity and support between established and emerging artists.

Alabi lamented that the level of jealousy and bitter rivalries among her peers has gotten out of hand, noting that senior colleagues are not only separated from upcoming artists but also fight among themselves, setting a bad example for the younger generation.

Tope Alabi reminded fellow artists that they will be held accountable by God for their actions, urging them to prioritise their legacy and accountability before God over fame and success.

According to her, the rivalry and negativity among established artists are being emulated by emerging artists, who are already against each other and “backstabbing” one another.

She emphasised that this behavior is not a true reflection of the gospel music community.

According to her: “It is wrong to see each other and smile then go behind to say bad things about one another.

”God will hold us accountable for these things. Let us stop it. It is high time we know that we are working for the kingdom and not for ourselves or fame. The bigger ones separated themselves from the up and coming. And yet the bigger ones still fight themselves again, what do you want those coming up to do?

“The emerging ones are already against each other. These children coming up are already backstabbing and emulating us because we started it. They are enemies to each other and smile with one another, they are faking it. This is getting out of hand and God will ask us.”

Gospel singer Tope Alabi has spoken on her annual worship session tagged “Praise the Almighty.”

Alabi talked about the musical concert during a recent session with journalists in Lagos.

She described the event as a way of giving back to God and a means of appreciating him for His love and care for the past years.

According to her: “Praise the Almighty is a programme that was designed by God and it has come to have a life of its own.

‘We are having the 14th edition at the Police College in Lagos on February 18. It is going to be a mind-blowing experience with God.”

Alabi said the choice of February 18 for the concert is deliberate.

According to her: “We needed to look for a time that is not crowded . We needed a free time where we can freely express thanks to God in a formal way. February seems to be that time.  November, December and January are usually busy. We saw that February is always free. That is why we fixed the date in February.”

Besides, Alabi explained that February is a month of love. ‘ for us as believers our definition of love is the love of Jesus. He is our Valentine. So we are giving love and showing love by separating time to glorify our father in heaven. ‘

The music icon used the opportunity to shed light on her new album titled ‘Toluwani.’

She said  it was God that made the album a reality. ‘Normally we don’t release album every year. But this particular album was not something we deliberately set out to do..we had just finished recording a particular track and we were rounding off.

‘ In fact we had rounded off. It was my husband who said we should spend time to praise God. Since the camera man was still around we decided to engage him. I quickly went to change my cloth while my husband invited some of our neighbours to join us. That was it.

‘What you see in Toluwani is a product of that spontaneous praise. God manifested Himself greatly as we decided to praise Him.”

“Many other gospel artists will join us in praising God. As we do that everything that is dead in our lives will be revived. The heart of all participants will at the end of the event yearn for more of God.”

Despite the controversies that have trailed her career in the last couple of years, Alabi said she has remained undaunted because “God has been solidly behind me. He has been my staying power.”

Tope Alabi is good at singing, not acting – Actor Yemi My Lover recounts relationship journey with singer

Veteran Nollywood actor Yemi Ayebo, popularly known as Yemi My Lover, revealed that Gospel singer Tope Alabi searched for two years before she finally met him.

The role interpreter, in an interview with his colleague, Abiola Bayo, on her YouTube show, ‘Talk to B’, narrated how his relationship with Tope Alabi began.

According to him, Tope Alabi is among those who passed through him in the entertainment industry.

Yemi said he accepted Tope wholly because she was hardworking and had musical talent but wasn’t good at acting.

He said: “Tope Alabi is one of those who passed through me, in the industry. We are both good to each other. I remember that year she said it herself when she got to my house that she had been looking for me for over a year or two. I said the other time that we don’t know the value of what this work carries.

“You might want to see an artiste then, and you will be searching for two years or more before you see them. Eventually, she went through a lot to see me and she got my place and I accepted her wholly because she was hardworking and gifted with music. When she was with me, we used to go to their house in Oshodi.

“We can go away for a week or 2 and her mother wouldn’t be worried or bothered because she had already handed her over to me. Because I am not that rubbish artiste, that cannot be trusted with girls. When she was with me, I saw her musical talent, but she wasn’t that good at acting.”
