  •  TRACE advises safety

Ota Divisional Commander of Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps (TRACE) Adekunle Ajibade has urged motorcyclists to always make use of crash helmets while on the road.

He condemned the use of industrial helmets as crash helmets by motorcyclists while on the road. He said it is wrong for motorcyclists to rely on industrial helmets for the safety of their head in case of an accident. He noted that industrial helmets are meant for factory workers or engineers in a manufacturing factory.

He was represented by the Division’s Public Enlightenment Officer, Commander Olaoke Victoria at a seminar periodically organised by the Corps for transportation stakeholders in Sango-Ota axis in Ogun State.

He said the approved crash helmets for motorcyclists do not include industrial helmet which she said only suitable for prevention of head injury within the factory.

She warned motorists against seeing TRACE officials as enemies in the cause of doing their job, stressing that the officers are on the road to safe lives through ensuring peoples’ carefree attitude or ignorance does not cause others their lives or permanent injury.

  • Five die, others injure in Ogun road crash

Five die, others injure in Ogun road crash

Five persons were killed on Thursday in an auto accident at the new Makun – Sagamu (Ogun State) stretch of the Lagos – Sagamu expressway when an 18-seater passenger bus collided with a truck.

Four male passengers and one male in the bus died at the accident scene according to a Witness.

Also, the Public Relations Officer, Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps (TRACE), Babatunde Akinbiyi, told journalists that the truck and the bus were going in the direction of  Lagos when the accident occurred.

Akinbiyi said information gathered from the TRACE Operatives which were at the scene for rescue operation suggested that the bus crashed into the truck from the rear following poor visibility and downpour that occurred at that area.

He noted that Governor Ibikunle Amosun and his security aides who happened to be travelling to Lagos at the time, helped control the gridlock caused by the accident.

The security details also assisted in taking victims to the Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital, Sagamu.

“The governor was on his way to Lagos when his convoy suddenly met the gridlock caused by the accident which occurred at the New Makun City along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway involving a truck and 18-seater commercial bus.

“Some of the security details had to disembark from their vehicles and trekked forward only to discover it was an accident.  Immediately, the governor was aware he ordered that the injured should be quickly conveyed to the hospital, Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital, Sagamu.

“The two victims who died instantly at the scene were equally taken to the morgue of the same hospital. Three others among the injured later died in the hospital.

“Our men who on ground at the scene of the accident said the downpour must have blurred the vision of the commercial bus, making him to rammed the bus into the truck from behind,” Akinbiyi said.

  • TRACE warns against obstructing traffic

The Ota division of Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps (TRACE) has warned commercial drivers against picking and dropping off passengers on the road, especially at the Tollgate/Sango, Ogun State axis of the Lagos/Abeokuta Expressway, thereby obstructing traffic.

Divisional Commander Adekunle Ajibade said the Corps would increase its partnership with the police, military and other paramilitary groups to ensure that causes of crashes along the axis were curbed. He added that any driver caught disobeying traffic laws will be prosecuted.

Ajibade addressed reporters in his office. He was reacting to the death, last week, of an hawker at Ota. Four others were injured in the accident.

According to him, a diesel truck (KRD 755 XH) coming from Ota suffered a brake failure and rammed into a yellow  bus (APP 295 XT) and a tricycle (TTD 318 VV).

The hawker was pinned to a vehicle why trying to run to safety. The truck driver would have maneuvered his way, had the road been free, he added.

Ajibade urged traders and hawkers to leave to the road to ensure the free flow of traffic. “Obey traffic rules for your safety,” he pleaded.

While commenting on this development, the Chief Executive Officer, Eunisell Chemicals, Mr Ken Amadi noted that the company had not failed in any way to meet and comply with international standards and best practices since it began operations in fluid solutions for the oil and gas and manufacturing industry almost 2 decades ago.

“We are not new to business in Nigeria and other parts of the world, although there are peculiarities in each market, our standards and policies are never compromised.” he said, adding that Eunisell, a specialty fluids management company, had been certified for 5 years consecutively since 2011.

  • Four battered, six others abducted in Ogun

Four battered, six others abducted in Ogun

At least four Operatives of the Ogun state Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps (TRACE) were battered and six others abducted on Tuesday in a surprise attack on their Ibara Area office, Abeokuta, by  men of the Nigeria Immigration Service(NIS), Ogun state Command.

The armed squad of the NIS which stormed the TRACE office in ‘shock and awe’ fashion using two unmarked vehicles, began to shoot sporadically into the air, seized any TRACE officer on sight and also thoroughly beat up the unfortunate ones caught.

For over 45 minutes, pandemonium ensued as TRACE Operatives and their visitors abandoned the offices and fled for safety into neighbouring compounds, to escape the NIS attack, a witness told The Nation.

Those wounded during the assault include the Head of Operations, Olalekan Adewale, a member of Parking Management agency, Tomiwa Khaleed and two others.

The Nation gathered that NIS not content with storming the victims’ Area Office, also went round strategic areas in Abeokuta, the Ogun state capital, and abducted six TRACE Operatives on duty in different locations and took them away.

It was gathered that angry NIS officials were reacting to an alleged assault on their un-armed colleague earlier in the day at the Sapon area of the state capital by TRACE Corps.

It was further gathered that following bitter argument between the unarmed NIS officer and TRACE, eight traffic corps were said to have beaten him up on the allegation that he parked his car in a manner that constituted an obstruction to traffic at the Sapon area.

The Public Relations Officer of TRACE, Babatunde Akinbiyi, who confirmed the assault, said four persons were wounded while six others were abducted in different areas of the city.

He said,”I got a call this morning that some of our men were being picked random around Abeokuta by some immigration officers.

“Learnt that they contravened traffic rules around Sapon area and our men were trying to remove the number plate and pushed him and he fell.

“Presently the driver of that car had been taken to court for the contravention and attacking uniformed officers on duty.”

Reacting, the Public Relations Officer of NIS, Felix Kuti, said the TRACE officials provoked the reprisal attack, and also justified the abduction of six TRACE corps.

Kuti said, “Even in family, there is bound to be disagreements. But among the uniformed men, there should be ‘espirit de corp.’ As a uniformed man, if you see another uniformed man in trouble, you must come to his aid. But when that is not being respected, there is problem.

“The TRACE assaulted two of our men this morning and one of them is a Chief Superintendent of Immigration around Sapon area, they tore his uniform, and wounded him. He suffered injury to the mouth.

“They later took him away, up till now, we are yet to see him. There is something called law of reciprocity. If I am looking for my brother and I cannot locate him, and I know you have taken him, it is possible that I may be tempted to equally take yours. When you give me my own, I give you your own.”

The cash sum was handed over to the 76 years old owner Oguntoye at his hospital bed in one of the private hospitals in Abeokuta, the state capital, where he is receiving treatment.

Oguntoye was said to be the lone occupier and driver of the Mercedes Benz Jeep 500 ML marked (LAGOS) KRD 933 BC which crashed into a passenger bus at Onipepe stretch of the Abeokuta – Sagamu expressway last Monday.
