  • Fayose, PDP and tragedy of leadership

SIR: It is a comic relief watching Governor Ayo Fayose in his usual cocky animation and garrulous temperament discrediting the former PDP ministers who raised an objection to the emergence of Ali Modu Sheriff as PDP chairman.

The objection to Fayose’s choice was anchored on lack of consultation on one hand and Ali’s purported dalliance with the deranged elements known as Boko Haram.

However the quotidian proclivity of the party to forge conservative positions through the nebulous “family affairs” has once again brought about a delicate closing of ranks thereby foreclosing an ample opportunity for propitiatory restitution in the face of dwindling public image perception.

If Buhari’s reputation for perpendicular integrity, towering leadership exemplar and a patriotic determination to reinvent the wheel of progress is already an albatross to any credible opposition, how much more with an opposition romancing a questionable leadership?

PDP’s strange choice predicated on the financial prowess of the new chairman has left voters with no other choice than sustain the present momentum for the next eight years.

Valentine’s tragedy: Lover boy kills girlfriend for shunning outing

A student of the University of Jos has been killed by a man described as her boyfriend for allegedly turning down his invitation for a date last Sunday- Valentine day.

Miss Nanchin Zakariah of the  Psychology department of the university was allegedly strangled to death by Badung David Dele on Monday, the day after Valentine at her Angwa Rukuba apartment.

A source close to them said they been in an intimate relationship for quite some time until a misunderstanding  set in shortly before the last Valentine day.

Badung was said to have reached out  to Nanchin apparently to settle their differences and invited her out for Valentine.

An unimpressed Nanchin reportedly smelled a cat and declined the invitation outright.

She felt that there was no basis for any dating between them having parted for some time.

The following morning, the suspect stormed Nanchin’s apartment  demanding an explanation why she failed to make the outing.

He reportedly grabbed his victim by the neck and strangled her to death.

After completing his evil act, the suspect left the apartment  and told a neighbour he met outside that he wanted to go and get some drug for his ‘ill’ friend.

He gave his phone number to the  woman and asked her  to call him  in case of any emergency.

The woman perceived danger immediately and  proceeded to Nanchin’s room only to find her lying down on her  bed unconsciously.

“I called her name  but she did  not respond,” the woman called Mama Joy said.

“I moved  closer and I discovered that she was  dead.

“I ran out,  screaming  to alert the  people around. I was shocked that the boy managed to kill this girl without a gun .There was no blood on her body.”

The Plateau State Police Command  confirmed the incident  and the arrest of the suspect.

The Police Public Relations Officer DSP Abu Emmanuel said Badung was arrested on the same day  “ and after some interrogation, he confessed to have committed the crime.”

The police, according to him, “are  making necessary arrangements to arraign him in court soon. The Police Commissioner is using this opportunity to caution ladies to be careful who they date. Some of these boys are criminals and you might ignorantly fall into their hands like this girl”

The body  of the deceased has been transferred from Bingham University Teaching Hospital to the Jos University Teaching Hospital JUTH for autopsy.

Tragedy as Area Commander drowns in hotel pool

The Lagos State Command of the Nigeria Police on Sunday recorded a painful loss of a senior officer, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Osung Ekpo.

Ekpo who was the Area K Commander, Morogbo drowned on Sunday night in a swimming pool located inside La Avalon Hotel in Lekki.

He was said to have gone there with some of his friends to celebrate Valentine’s Day but died in mysterious circumstance.

Renowned for his doggedness in tackling criminals, particularly the alleged One Million Boys who had unleashed mayhem on communities under his command, he was said to have been rushed to a nearby hospital in Ajah, where he was confirmed dead.

Although the exact time he drowned could not be ascertained, it was learnt that the Area J police command received the signal at about 8pm and rushed to the hotel.

After he was confirmed dead, The Nation gathered that his body was deposited at a military hospital in the Island.

It was further learnt that Ekpo had visited another senior colleague of his about three hours before his death.

The news of his death however left many police officers in sad mood especially the Divisional Police Officers who worked under him.

One of the DPOs who does not want his name mentioned told The Nation that Ekpo was a friendly and humble man, who had strong passion for his job.

He stated that the deceased ACP has hardly rested since the rumour of activities of the One Million Boys started.

“He went to celebrate Valentine and to also rest because he has been working very hard. He was a very jovial man and a good police officer too. This is a terrible loss. It is the worst valentine gift the police can get,” he said.

However, the state command’s spokesperson, Dolapo Badmos, an SP, who confirmed his death, said Ekpo went to the hotel for a swimming exercise.

She said: “The Lagos State Police Command regrets to announce the death of Assistant Commissioner of Police, ACP Osung Ekpo, who until his death was the Area Commander, Area ‘K’ Morogbo.

“The death occurred on Sunday, February 14, while having his routine swimming exercise in a Pool. ACP Osung Ekpo was enlisted into the Nigeria Police Force in the year 1990, and worked in various formations of the Force.

“He assumed his last duty post as Area Commander, Area ‘K’ Morogbo on November 14, 2013, a position he held until his untimely death.

“The Command will miss him for his gallantry performance while he held forth as the Area Commander. Lagos State Police Command sympathizes with his family and prays that Almighty God give them the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss. “

A gallant officer, Ekpo had served at various units and Divisions of the police.

He was DPO of several police stations in Lagos.

He also served at the Nigeria Police Special Fraud Unit (SFU), Ikoyi, Lagos before he was promoted to the rank of an Assistant Commissioner of police and posted to the North.

He was however transferred to Lagos and made the Area K Commander.

His posting to that command was triggered by the growing rate of smuggling activities.

He was said to have dared the smugglers and decimated them during the period he spent there.

  • Ekiti tragedy as Obasanjo’s legacy

The sickening confession by Dr. Tope Aluko that in effecting what he described as a coup against the people of Ekiti, they “went into the election with 1,040 recognised soldiers and another batch of 400 ‘unrecognised soldiers’ brought from Enugu by a serving senator from the South-East;  raised 44 special strike teams brought in (with) Toyota Hilux buses from Abuja and Onitsha and made special stickers for the vehicles that conveyed members of the strike team with  each of them given a black band for identification” was but a confirmation  of the hijacking of our nation by PDP brigands. For 16 years, PDP and its leaders operated with impunity, engaging in war of attrition and assassination of their members over the sharing of offices and our resources.

Fayose said we should look at the messenger and not the message. But there are compelling reasons to believe Aluko is a witness of truth. First Aluko confessed he and Fayose have been friends for 40 years. The closer we therefore look at these two friends, the more the possibility of agreeing with the saying by our people that ‘‘it’s only a thief who can accurately identify the foot print of another thief on a stone”.  For lying under oath at the tribunal claiming ‘the election was free, fair and credible’, Fayose wants Aluko committed to prison for three years for perjury. That Fayose’s Freudian slip, in itself, is all that is needed to confirm Aluko’s claim that the election was sham. But Fayose himself is no less guilty of perjury according to his political detractors who reminded us he claimed in his nomination form that he had never been indicted by any panel of inquiry. If the Supreme Court ruled he was not properly impeached, that came eight years after the event and long after filling the nomination form.

There are other compelling reasons why we cannot doubt Aluko’s claim that Fayose, after purchasing his victory in the primary with Jonathan misapplied $2m state funds, went back to tell the president that there was no way he was going to win the election without the use of the military.  Here was an impeached former governor, chased from pillar to post by EFCC for alleged financial and murder charges and who in his own words, “flee (sic) with all (his) property left in the Government House, and taken to court about 59 times aside the 45 days (he) spent in detention”, pitched without an agenda against a performing incumbent few months after losing a senatorial contest. Little wonder, Fayose was to describe his victory “a rare miracle” and his “return to government as not common in history”.

But Obasanjo is the source of Ekiti people’s nightmare. Precisely because of his contempt for them and their pursuit of academic excellence to advance in the social ladder, Obasanjo who self-conceitedly claimed he achieved on a platter of gold what Awo could not achieve through a life-long struggle, probably saw imposition of Fayose, considered half-literate by his people, a way to humble the Ekitis. In total disrespect of the feelings of the people, Obasanjo also sent Brigadier Olurin his kinsman to supervise the rigging of the 2007 election. The task was made easy with the exploitation of the intra-party feud in ACN by Obasanjo and PDP. Dissident ACN members, misled to believe they were out to prevent Tinubu from cornering the resources of the state  were armed with large sums of money, vehicles, communication and logistics to aid the rigging of the 2007 election later nullified by the courts. By the time Fayemi retrieved his stolen mandate, nearly all the legacies of Awo and his successors had been erased. The state College of Medicine which professors Oyebode and Oyebola tried to nurture had been traded for Fayose’s fraudulent poultry project. Christ School, one of the earliest and best secondary schools in Nigeria secured less than 30%success in WAEC examination. Other public schools suffered worst fate. This is the genesis of the present generation of Fayose’s area boys, ‘okada’ riders and political thugs. After four years of valiant effort by Dr Fayemi to prevent a repeat of the tragedy that befell a whole generation of our children, Dr. Aluko has now confirmed how he along with Fayose and some other Ekiti people colluded with outsiders to sabotage that effort.

But Obasanjo and not Jonathan, a master of political subterfuge who merely used Fayose to settle scores with his estranged godfather, should be held responsible for the coup staged against our people. He set the precedent during his 2007 ‘do or die’ Ekiti battle and its rerun supervised by another spineless Egba woman. Jonathan alleged commitment of $37m to his own variant of ‘do or die’ 2014 pacification of Ekiti by all means was only an improvement on the unspecified massive deployment of funds through ACN dissidents in 2007. If  Jonathan and PDP subdued Ekiti with 1,040 recognised soldiers and another batch of 400 ‘unrecognised soldiers’ brought from Enugu in addition to  44 special strike teams brought in (with) Toyota Hilux buses from Abuja and Onitsha in 2014, Obasanjo and PDP in 2007 provided ‘security, logistics and communication’ to break the will of Ekiti people.

Aluko was only confirming what we all heard and saw on national television when he said ‘we used the military to block all routes in the local governments and prevented APC chieftains, including former Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi from coming into Ekiti. So we ensured that no APC chieftain was in sight on Election Day. We provided polling agents for the APC in most of the polling units so we had no problem getting them to sign election results in the units’. It was a known fact that Fayose, Obanikoro, Adesiyan and Chris Uba reduced Ekiti to a conquered territory on Election Day in 2014.

But as said on these pages two years ago, weep not for Ekiti but for the nation.  Bode Thomas in the fifties canvassed for regionalism in order to save the Yoruba country from the rule of a one-eyed king. The tragedy is that the whole country has been afflicted by a spectre of one-eyed king, a euphemism for incompetent leaders since independence. While the west burned in 1966, Balewa waited patiently for Ahmadu Bello who returned too late from his pilgrimage to Saudi Arabia. The bungling after the failed 1966 coup by ill-equipped Ironsi led to the civil war. The destruction of the bureaucracy and the university, the two major institutions that sustain the survival of society by Murtala Mohammed and Obasanjo who were ill-equipped to manage society is responsible for today’s corruption in the civil service and the collapse of our university system which once ranked with the best in the world. In 1979, Obasanjo who claimed the best didn’t have to win the election supported Shehu Shagari whose only ambition was to become a senator. Shagari smoked away while the economy of the nation was wrecked by his NPN led by Akinloye. We have had an Ibrahim Babangida whose regime Obasanjo dismissed as a government ‘deficit in honour’. Babangida destroyed all our values and institutionalised corruption.   We have had Abacha, a common thief whose obsession seemed to crudely ferry raw cash with boxes from the central bank. We have had Obasanjo, widely regarded and rejected as a one-eyed king by the Yoruba but wildly celebrated by the rest of the country as messiah. His legacy in the last 16 years is the seizure of our country by PDP brigands headed until recently by Goodluck Jonathan, his godson.

The way forward is restructuring of our multi ethnic and multicultural society so that each group can decide who manages its affairs. Ekiti must be allowed to decide if it wants to be ruled by Fayose, his thugs and ‘okada’ riders just as Delta should be allowed to choose if they want to be ruled by militants led by Government ‘Tompolo’ Ekpemipolo. The beauty of federalism is that it liberates groups and individuals from the tyranny of the state.

  • EFCC grills Moro over Immigration job tragedy

EFCC grills Moro over Immigration job tragedy

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) yesterday interrogated immediate past Minister of Interior, Mr. Abba Moro for eight hours over the March 15, 2014 Immigration job tragedy in which 19 applicants died.

Interrogators wanted to know how the N700 million collected from the applicants was spent.

Moro’s interogation was said to be the first in the series of interaction he will have with the commission.

He is expected to return to the EFCC for further questioning tomorrow.

The anti-graft agency had earlier grilled the immediate past Comptroller-General of Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS), Mr. David Parradang and Secretary to the Civil Defence, Fire, Immigration and Prison Service Board, Mr. Sylvanus Tapgun.

According to a top source, Moro arrived at the EFCC headquarters in Abuja around  10am and he left at 6pm.

The source said Moro was granted administrative bail.

He said: “We summoned the ex-minister on how the NIS came about N1, 000 levies imposed on about 700,000 applicants, the relevant statute or authority backing such a charge and how the money was expended.

“Our investigators are trying to unravel many things. Out of about N700million collected from the applicants, N212million was budgeted for the March 2014 recruitment test for applicants.

“But records made available to the EFCC indicated N45million was actually released. So, about N167million meant for logistics on the test day could not even be accounted for by anyone or group.

“We are asking all the parties invited so far to name the account in which the N700million was deposited and the withdrawals. They have to justify how every kobo was spent.

“In 2014, the Immigration Service illegally collected N1, 000 from each of the over 700,000 applicants looking for jobs.

“Twenty applicants lost their lives during the stampedes which accompanied a sham test conducted nationwide for the applicants.

“In spite of collecting the levies from the applicants, Moro shielded Parradang from any reprimand during his tenure.

“While appearing before the then Senator Atiku Bagudu-led Senate Committee on Interior, “Tapgun admitted that the consultant released N45million out of the N212million requested by the board for the exercise.

Tapgun said Drexel Technical Nigeria Limited – the consultant who anchored the application exercise on behalf of the Ministry—provided only the N45million as ‘discretionary contribution’ for the screening.

“He admitted that the development created serious logistics problems on the day of the exercise.”

  • Tragedy as rock crushes mother, children to death in Ogun

… father, two others critically injured

Four persons, including mother, two children and a grandchild were crushed to death by over 1000 years old rock that tipped off its base and rammed lethally on them after knocking down the wall of their bedroom.

The incident which happened in the rocky Iberekodo community in Abeokuta North Local Government Council of Ogun state on Friday night, took the grieving residents in shock.

However, the man of the house Ismail Lawal, Sukurat and Rofiat survived the assault on the modest home by the deadly rock because they happened to be relaxing at the sitting room when it struck but that is not without injuring them seriously.

The victims – Mrs Silifat Lawal, her two children: Raaheedat (15), Semia(4) and a grandchild – Mariam, had barely fallen into a deep sleep on their bed after a Friday dinner when the rock killed them while the injured were taken to hospital for treatment.
    .
The Nation gathered that the rock has been in existence in Iberekodo community before the Egba people settled in Abeokuta, the Ogun state capital around 1830 AD.

The Nation gathered further that the heavy downpour on Friday night which had softened the base of the rock situating on a location overlooking Ismail Lawal’s home, caused the ground to give way, and the rock having lost its balance tumbled and rolled lethally on Lawal’s home beneath.

  • Tragedy as Ekiti tipper driver allegedly kills wife

Tragedy struck penultimate Friday in Ado Ekiti, the Ekiti State capital after a tipper driver, Azeez Ismaila, beat his wife, Odunayo, to death.

The incident occurred at the residence of the couple at Oke Ureje area along Polytechnic Road, Ado Ekiti.

The couple hails from Ado Ekiti.

It was learnt that Ismaila attempted to secretly bury the body of his 27-year-old wife in the night in an attempt to cover up his track.

The Nation gathered that the suspect who was said to be in his 30s was arrested by men of the Odo -Ado Police Division.

The deceased had three children for her husband and her last born is said to be six- month- old.

The suspect was alleged to have subjected his late wife to constant beating for giving him only female children

He was said have descended on the deceased a few hours after having his dinner.

Odunayo was said to have prepared pounded yam for her husband and rice for herself before the family went to bed.

She was said to have lost the money Ismaila gave to her to prepare food for the household after which she went back to collect another sum.

Neighbours of the couple, who were said to be used to hearing the screams of the deceased anytime her husband beats her up, said they heard her screamed few minutes to midnight.

Ismaila was said to have brought Odunayo’s corpse to his father’s house at Oke Bola area of Ado Ekiti where he allegedly dug a grave to bury her without the knowledge of her family.

Father of the deceased, Ojo Ajewole, who spoke with The Nation at his residence in Ado Ekiti said Ismaila’s attempt to secretly bury his wife shocked him and other members of the family.

He explained that his daughter was never sick adding that she reportedly foamed from her mouth while blood gushed out of her ears.

Ajewole said: “We insisted that her body should be taken to the mortuary, when we got wind that he wanted to secretly bury her corpse. He claimed that she took ill but I queried why I was never informed when she was laid up as they want me to believe. Nobody will believe his story because of the scars on my daughter’s body.

“We want justice and the Police must get to the root of this matter, there should be no cover up at all”.

The accused was charged to an Ado Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday for murder.

The presiding magistrate, Idowu Aiyenimo, however ordered the accused be remanded in prison custody pending legal advice from the office of the Directorate of Public Prosecutions.

  • Sultan, others seek probe of Saudi tragedy

Sultan, others seek probe of Saudi tragedy

The Sultan of  Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar lll, and President General of the Jama’atu Nasril Islam (JNI) yesterday told Saudi authorities to probe the stampede in which 768 pilgrims died in Mina during the stoning of the devil.

Iran, which lost over 100 of its citizens in the stampede and the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC), also yesterday insisted on a probe of the incident.

The Sokoto State Pilgrims Welfare Agency confirmed the death of Sheikh Liman Dan-Ata, the Chief Imam of the Sultan Abubakar III Jumaa’at Mosque in Sokoto.

Also dead are the immediate Caretaker Chairman of Illela Local Government Area of the state, Alhaji Bello Gidan-Hamma, his mother, step-mother and two wives.

The Media Assistant to the agency, Alhaji Farouk Umar, said yesterday that many pilgrims from the state were still missing.

Nine other pilgrims from the state were confirmed dead on Saturday by Imam Imam,  Governor Aminu Tambuwal’s spokesman.

The Sultan expressed sadness over the number of victims and prayed for the repose of their souls.

“This is one tragedy too many,” the Sultan said in a statement signed on his behalf by the Secretary-General of JNI, Dr. Khalid Abubakar-Aliyu, in Kaduna.

The Sultan expressed heart-felt condolences with the families of the victims of the tragedy, calling on the Muslim Ummah never to be deterred but remain steadfast despite the challenges confronting them.

“It was gratifying that the Saudi authorities were doing all they could to make the hajj operation smooth the way it should be,” the JNI noted, adding that “ investigation into what led to the tragedy is necessary”.

[ad id=”403656″]He maintained that an investigation into the stampede has become necessary to guard against a reccurrence.

The statement added: “With humility and total submission to Allah the Exalted, the Jama’atu Nasril Islam (JNI), under the leadership of His Eminence, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, Sultan of Sokoto and the Muslim President-General, condoles with heavy heart with Muslim ummah (Community) over the Jamarat stampede pilgrims while completing the rites of Hajj in one of the tragedy, which led to the loss of several lives of sites of the worship in Saudi Arabia.

“This is one tragedy too many. JNI shares the pains and worries the families of the affected victims are passing through and them to patiently persevere, and put their trust in Allah.

“Despite this and other painful trials, our faith in Allah is unshaken. Therefore, we call on each and every Muslim to remain focused and firm in his/her belief and engage in acts that will bring them closer to Allah.

“It is indeed gratifying that the Saudi authorities have been doing everything humanly possible to make the Hajj as smooth as it should be, but we still call on them to investigate the Jamarat stampede in

order to avert future occurrence.” JNI asserted.

The leader of the Shiite Islamic Movement of Nigeria, Shiekh Ibaheem El-Zakzaky, blamed the tragedy on the Saudi prince’s convoy, which reportedly caused panic among the pilgrims.

He said the prince and others fingered in the tragedy should be sentenced to death.

El-Zakzaky, who spoke in Zaria at the weekend, argued that the management of the hajj was not the exclusive preserve of the Al-Saud royal family.

“The Al-Saud family cannot be trusted when its hands are soaked with Muslims’ blood in countries such as Yemen, Bahrain, Iraq and Syria,” El-Zakzaky said.

He insisted that the Al-Saud prince be punished by death “as they caused the death of thousands of innocent pilgrims”.

The cleric, who addressed his faithful as part of activities to mark the Sallah, said:”For the government of Saudi Arabia to blame pilgrims for killing themselves is ridiculous and a form of human degradation, which is also criminal.

“They are saying this in order to cover up the real cause of the tragedy. If the Saudi government could describe the crane tragedy at the precincts of the holy Ka’abah as accidental, we wonder why the crane will be left hanging over the heads of millions of pilgrims, and only to crash on them on September 11.

“The Saudi authorities cannot fool the world or exonerate themselves from the heinous crime and monumental tragedy as the world knows who is killing their brethren in Yemen, Bahrain, Iraq and Syria.”

Iran’s President Hassan Rouhani yesterday used a speech at the United Nations (UN) to call for an investigation into Thursday’s stampede at the annual Hajj pilgrimage to Mecca.

The incident is the deadliest to hit the Hajj in 25 years, with 769 people dead, more than 130 of them from Iran.

Saudi Arabia’s Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir accused the Iranians of playing politics with a tragedy.

The country’s most senior cleric defended the authorities, saying the stampede was “beyond human control”.

King Salman has ordered a safety review into the disaster.

Mr Rouhani described the crush as “heart-rending”. As well as the fatalities, 934 people were injured.

But Mr Jubeir, who is also in New York to attend the UN General Assembly, said: “I believe that the Iranians should know better than to play politics with a tragedy that has befallen people who were performing their most sacred religious duty.”

Iran’s outrage also has political motivations, as its battle with Saudi Arabia for regional influence sharpens week by week.

    Parradang quizzed about N650m fees

    Ex-Minister Moro may face panel

For about eight hours yesterday, Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) operatives quizzed a former Comptroller-General  of Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS) Mr. David Parradang.

He was grilled over alleged N650million fees collected from job seekers last year.

The EFCC invited Parradang to explain how much was collected and the whereabouts of the funds.

About 6.5million applied for 5,000 spaces. The conduct of the test in March,  2014 led to the death of 15 applicants. Scores were injured in stampede in Abuja, Port Harcourt, Minna

    Each applicant paid N1,000.

Although the immediate past Minister of Interior, Comrade Abba Moro, blamed the former Comptroller-General for the incidents, those loyal to Parradang had earlier traced the tragedy to Moro and those they called his business partners.

The EFCC has stepped into the scandal to ascertain the whereabouts of the N650million.

The probe is coming barely three weeks after Parradang’s removal by President Muhammadu Buhari for allegedly recruiting over 1,000 officers in May, allegedly without due process.

A highly-placed source, who spoke in confidence, said: “The ex-Comptroller-General came to the EFCC headquarters at about 10am and as at 6pm, he was yet to leave.

“Upon arrival, he was ushered into an office to meet with a team of investigators, who insisted on a written statement.

“Parradang was invited by the EFCC to explain the circumstances behind the fees charged, the law backing it, the account where the money was paid into, what the cash was used for and the balance.

“This is just the first step in the ongoing probe of the jobs scandal. We are going to invite officials of the Ministry of Interior and the Prison and Immigration Board and the company engaged for the recruitment.

“ A verification of the company is already done at the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC).

“We may also interact with Abba Moro if it becomes expedient to do so. But at present, we are grilling Parradang.”

The source added: “We did not receive any petition from any person or group. This commission went into the case on merit. We have been on it for a while.”

The Head of Media and Publicity of the EFCC, Mr. Wilson Uwujaren, confirmed that Parradang appeared before a team following the ongoing investigation into last year’s immigration recruitment scandal .

[ad id=”403656″]About two weeks ago,  Moro said Parradang should be held responsible for the job tragedy.

He said Parradang abandoned the important recruitment for birthday parties in Jos.

A tragedy that shook the nation

At least 18 job seekers were on March 16, 2014 confirmed dead nationwide during a rowdy recruitment test conducted by the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS).

In Abuja, the 60,000 capacity National Stadium was filled up with job applicants desperate to write the recruitment test.

The examination was believed to have been contracted to a private firm by the NIS, citing the need for transparency and accountability.

But it turned to tragedy as the NIS could not manage the millions of applicants desperately seeking employment.

In Abuja, seven applicants (two men and five women) were confirmed dead in a stampede where many others were injured.

The body count rose in other states where the same tragedy unfolded. In Niger state, a stampede occurred, leading to the death of three of the job seekers as security agencies fired tear gas at applicants.

About 11,000 candidates had converged on Women Day Secondary School in Minna, when the tragedy occurred.

At the Port Harcourt Liberation stadium, a pregnant woman was among the five people who died. The pregnant woman was among the 35,000 applicants that thronged the stadium, she was said to have died while attempting to scale a fence. She fell down on her stomach and died on the way to the hospital

In Osun, Lagos, Gombe, Oyo and Plateau states, thousands of applicants fainted due to exhaustion caused by the large number of people.

NIS officials said they “were overwhelmed” by the sheer number of applicants who turned up for the recruitment exercise.

The number of the dead provoked national outrage with many calling for the sack and prosecution of the then Minister for Internal Affairs, Comrade Abba Moro. But the Minister, who accepted responsibility for the tragedy was also quick to blame the victims for being impatient and refusing to follow orders given to them.

Former President Goodluck Jonathan commiserated with the families of the victims and promised them automatic employment in the NIS for a member of each of the family. He said a fresh recruitment would be conducted.

  • Six Nigerians among Saudi tragedy victims

Six Nigerians among Saudi tragedy victims

Six Nigerian pilgrims are among the  107 people killed in Friday’s crane collapse at Mecca’s holy site Ka’aba, Saudi Arabia.

Kaduna State Task Force on Hajj spokesman  Saidu Adamu yesterday confirmed the death of a member of the state’s delegation.

National Hajj Commission (NAHCON) confirmed the death of five other Nigerians.

It named the dead Kaduna pilgrim as Alhaji Adamu Shuaibu Kargi from Kubau Local Government Area.

Federal Government officials had on Saturday said no Nigerian died.

Gombe State Amirul-Hajj, Abdullahi Mai-Kano, said four women pilgrims from the state were missing after the incident.

According to him, the four pilgrims were from Akko, Dukku and Nafada local governments areas of the state.

Mai-Kano said the pilgrim was injured in her head, but had been treated and discharged.

He said the four pilgrims were declared missing after a thorough verification and bed checking in the three houses accommodating the state’s pilgrims.

Authorities in Saudi Arabia had earlier on Saturday confirmed that 107 people died.

The spokesperson for the Saudi presidency on the Affairs of the two holy mosques, Ahmad Al-Mansouri, said at “least 107 people were dead and another 238 were injured.

Badamasi expressed optimism that the remaining pilgrims would be taken to the Holy land before the Sept. 17 deadline.

He, however, called on the remaining pilgrims to cooperate with the board to ensure the success of the airlift.

NAN recalls that the airlift of the state’s intending pilgrims commenced on Sept. 5.

The Sultan of Sokoto and President-General of Jama’atul Nasril Islam, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar III has commiserated with authorities of the Kingdom of Saudi-Arabia over the deaths due to the collapse of cranes on the holy mosque in Makka.

In a statement signed on behalf of Sultan Abubakar by the JNI’s Secretary-General, Dr. Khalid Abubakar-Aliyu , the royal father described  the  death of the 107 pilgrims as a great tragedy to the Muslim ummah (community).

He said:”This is indeed a great tragedy to the Muslim Ummah specifically and the entire world generally.

“This is a pointer to us that death is inevitable.

“Therefore, we should be conscious of our actions and inactions, because death may descend anywhere, anytime.

“We commiserate with the Saudi authorities, especially the custodian of the two holy mosques at this moment of grief over this tragic event.”

The Sultan also expressed concern over the kidnap of his deputy, Sheikh  Adam Abdullahi Idoko by unknown gunmen.

Sheikh Idoko is the Vice President of the JNI and Chief Imam of the University of Nsukka, Enugu State.

While condenming the incident, the Sultan urged the government and security agencies to do everything possible to rescue the Islamic scholar.
