50 killed as train crashes into school bus

Fifty people, mostly children, were killed when a train slammed into a school bus as it crossed tracks in a city south of Cairo yesterday, state media and officials said.

All but two of the dead were children, aged around four to eight, said a senior security official in Assiut, near the site. One woman and the bus driver also died, he added.

The bus was broken in half by the force of the crash. Blood was spattered on the front of the engine and school bags and text books, some bloodstained, were strewn around.

Witnesses said barriers at the rail crossing were open when the train hit the bus. Transport Minister Mohamed Rashad and the head of the railways authority resigned, and President Mohamed Mursi said those responsible would be held to account.

Egypt’s roads and railways have a poor safety record and Egyptians have long complained that successive governments have failed to enforce even basic safeguards, leading to a string of deadly crashes.

State media reported that as well as 50 dead, 15 or more people were injured. A medical source said as many as 28 were injured, 27 of them children.

“They told us the barriers were open when the bus crossed the tracks and the train collided with it,” said Mohamed Samir, a doctor at Assiut hospital where the injured were taken, citing witness accounts.

Assiut Governor Yahya Keshk also said the crossing was open. “The crossing worker was asleep. He has been detained,” he told state television.

  • Collapsed bridge delays train services

The Nigeria Railway Corporation (NRC)has said that the collapse of the a railway bridge in Minna, had stalled the movement of goods and passenger services train from Lagos to Kano.

The Managing Director of the corporation,Mr Adeseyi Sijuade, disclosed this when the Minister of Information, Mr Labaran Maku, led the Good Governance Team on a visit to the area.

The team visited the completed project site of the two railway bridges that were washed away by flood three years ago.

Sijuade said that the two collapsed railway bridges at Akere, had now been completed and certified by the government inspector of railway.

“The good news is that it was earlier this week that the government inspector of railway certified the completion of the Akere Bridge.

“Starting from next week, we will introduce our goods and passenger services train from Lagos to Zungeru.

According to him, trains currently move from Minna to Kano.

He, however, said that the current problem was the collapsed bridge at Minna.

“The problem now is a collapsed railway bridge at Minna which is being addressed.

“Once it is done in the next three weeks, trains can now move from Lagos to Kano,’’

Responding, Maku said that the visit had shown that the Federal Government was sincere in its promise of reviving the rail transport system in order to ease pressure on the roads and boost economic activities in the country.

“What we did today was a demonstration ride to confirm to Nigerians that the rehabilitation of the railway has moved from Lagos to Zungeru in Niger state.

“It means that we can now move our goods and services regularly from Lagos to Zungeru due to the completion of the rehabilitation of Akere bridge,’’ he said.

The minister expressed optimism that by the end of November, the rehabilitation work would be completed between Zungeru and Minna, to enable trains to move directly from Lagos to Kano.

Also speaking, Malam Mohammed Garba, the National President of the NUJ, praised the Federal Government for reviving the rail transport to ease pressure on the roads, thereby boosting economic activities in the country.

“The NUJ strongly believes that if there is one area where Mr President is doing well, it is in the area of rail transport.

“We are really impressed with the high quality job,” Garba said.

Fifteen of the invited 18 players have reported to the training camp of the national beach soccer team in Badagry, Lagos, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) said on Wednesday in Abuja.

NFF’s Chief Media Officer, Ademola Olajire, in a statement made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), said the team had commenced preparations for an invitational in Dubai.

“The team handlers, led by Adamu Audu have 15 players in camp with training twice a day after they had maintained a once-a-day training programme for the past few days. The players not in camp include Abdul Haruna who only recently lost his father in-law. The rest are Bartholomew Ibenegbu who is down with typhoid fever, and Ogbonnaya Okemiri excused to attend a screening exercise with Akwa United FC of Uyo,’’ the statement said.

NAN reports that the beach soccer team, otherwise known as Supersand Eagles, are preparing for the Eight-Nation Samsung Beach Soccer Intercontinental Cup in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

    •Okoronkwo, Orji replace Pillars duo

IT was good and the not too good news on Monday morning when the national team; Super Eagles resumed training for the October 13 duel against the Lone Stars of Liberia in Calabar.

As expected all the players invited save for the Sunshine Stars duo of Izu Azuka and Solomon Kwambe, beat the Sunday evening deadline and were part of the training session at the training pitch of the Abuja National Stadium. “They have special permission to stay away for now”, declared Head Coach, StephenKeshi speaking on the Sunshine Stars duo, who are preparing to host Egyptian giants, Al Ahly Nationale this weekend in the semi-finals of the CAF Champions League.

The not too good news however is that midfield ace, Gabriel Reuben and his Kano Pillars teammate, Papa Idris, have yet to recover well enough to be part of the team that will confront Liberia on October 13. Reuben suffered a groin injury during the finals of the Federation Cup in Lagos, while Idris has been battling a nagging knee injury, which has slowed down the usually pacy central defender.

After Monday morning’s training, Keshi and his crew had a lengthy meeting after which it was decided that the two players should be excused, going by the crucial nature of the game at hand. They have since left camp and would be replaced by Heartland’s Kalu Orji and Stanley Okoronkwo of Sharks FC of Port Harcourt. “It was a painful decision to let the two players go, but we have to look at the future of the players and the fact that we will need the two of them at the South Africa 2013 Nations Cup, that is why we have said we should give them more time to go and get themselves healed. After the game against Liberia, they should be back in the team”, Head Coach Stephen Keshi explained.
