El Kanemi players return to training

El Kanemi Warriors players have returned to training after they refused to train on Tuesday over their unpaid entitlement.

    The players have given
the state government and the management of the club a ten-day ultimatum to pay their entitlement.

“Our players have returned to training. They trained Wednesday evening and they also trained on Thursday morning. All is well in the team now; the players have seen reasons with the government and the management over the delay of their money.

“I am happy that the players have returned to training. We have an important match this weekend against Lobi Stars and they have promised to put in their best.

“We did not strike. We only refuse to come to train on Tuesday just to let our management know that all is not well with us, now that they have told us why the money is been delayed and we agreed with them. We are back in training,” the players declared.

Meanwhile the management thanked the players for their understanding and promised to live up to their promise once they get the money from the government.

    •$2.1b lost to smugglers

Training for stakeholders involved in the production, processing, packaging, marketing and export of shea nut has begun.

The programme was inaugurated by the Minister of State for Industry, Trade and Investment,Dr. Samuel Ortom, in collaboration with the National Shea Products Association of Nigeria (NASPPAN) and the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development at the ministry’s headquarters in Abuja.

Ortom said: “The Federal Government has realised their coming together as stakeholders in the Shea Nut industry will, no doubt impact positively on the output in the shea nut industry, enhance job and wealth creation, improve employment generation, and act as means of fighting poverty and also enhancing the diversification of the nation’s foreign exchange inflow.

“This is in line with Mr. President’s transformation agenda in the country. Likewise, it is the mandate of this Ministry therefore, to create policies that will positively drive quality certification of the nation’s agricultural commodities prior to processing and export.”

Ortom stated that Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO’s) findings indicated that Nigeria’s Shea trees produced 57 per cent of the shea nuts across the shea belt in Africa.

“It is, however, unfortunate to inform you that Nigeria hardly process five per cent of its shea nuts to butter neither do we pick nor export up to 20 per cent of the entire Shea Nuts produced annually in the country. The remaining 80 per cent is left to rot away un-utilised. The output of the shea industry in Nigeria has the potentials of being equal with other agricultural commodities like cocoa, sesame seeds, soya and a host of others.”

In his contribution, the representative of the Minister of State for Agriculture and Rural Development, Mr. Charles Ezinma (Shea Desk Officer) said that Nigeria has lost $2.1 billion to activities of smugglers from expected $3.8 billion per annum from foreign exchange, adding that his ministry is addressing the issues of long gestation of the crop, poor storage facilities and smuggling.

Earlier, the Acting President, NASPAN, Mrs. Nelly Osagie Ndaguba urged the Federal Government to encourage the regeneration of Shea Tree Woodland Park across the Shea belt, improve quality control assessment for shea nut and shea butter, quality and provision of modern laboratory as well as provision of ware houses.

  • Institute holds training on skills development

Institute holds training on skills development

Good work ethics, positive attitude, communication skills, team building and creative thinking are some of the skills participants will gain at the 22nd Annual Trainers Conference of the Nigerian Institute of Training and Development (NITAD)which holds from August 22 to 26 at the Rock View Hotel, Wuse, in Abuja.

Chairman of the Conference Planning Committee, Mr Laolu Oguntuyi said at a briefing in Lagos that these skills are not taught in schools though employers price them high.

He said participants will learn about these skills and more at the conference which has as theme: Learning and Development: Pre-Requisite to Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurial Growth.

In choosing the theme, Oguntuyi added that as an institute focused on life-long learning, NITAD has chosen to address a critical need in the Nigerian economy.

“Employers nowadays look at soft skills and down play technical skills.  That is why the conference is looking at both soft and hard skills.  We should embrace entrepreneurship.  If we do, we cannot complain of poverty and most of our problems would be solved,” he said while responding to questions by journalists.

He added: “There is no issue that should be addressed as a matter of urgent national importance than that of skills acquisition.  The importance of skill acquisition cannot be over-emphasised because its role in national development is multi-dimensional.”

Also speaking, NITAD Registrar, Ms Mofe Akinbanji, said rather than wait for the government to drive skills acquisition and entrepreneurship Nigerians have to provide a platform for youths to learn to gain skills for self reliance.

She said: “When you talk about skills acquisition and entrepreneurship, it is not about what government will do.  Government has been doing its part – providing money for young people with ideas.  But skills acquisition is about youths getting skills.  There are millions of young graduates who spend years without jobs yet do not have skills.  Going to school and having a degree is not enough.  After that what next?”

After the conference, NITAD’s first vice president, Rev. Tunde Salawu, said the communiqué would be sent to the Federal Government and heads of the various tertiary institutions.

Managing directors, vice chancellors, deans, permanent secretaries, principals, teachers, lecturers, students, and others are expected to attend the training.

  • N300b required for manpower training annually, says ITF

About N300 billion is required annually for the training of  two million people on various skills in the country, the Director-General, Industrial Training Fund (ITF), Dr Juliet Chukkas-Onaeko has said. Chukkas-Onaeko, who made this known at the 5th ITF Trainers’ Forum held in Abuja recently, said the agency had the capacity to train over two million Nigerians annually on various skills to boost the national industrial revolution plan of the Federal Government.

At the forum themed ‘The Place of Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) in the Actualisation of the Nigeria Industrial Revolution Plan (NIRP),’she identified fund as the agency’s major set back and appealed to its partners and other stakeholders to support the good course, which had the capacity to industrialise the country.

The Director-General said the train the trainers conference was not only apt but timely, given the current thrust of the present management to pursue a 4-point training agenda. She said the agenda were training of two million Nigerians annually, the full automation of ITF business processes, ensuring 100 per cent payment of training contributions, and ensuring 100 per cent implementation of SIWES.

“We are all aware of the unemployment situation in the country. We are equally aware of Mr. President’s commitment to transform the national economy through accelerated industrialisation using the National Enterprise Development Programme (NEDEP) and the National Industrial Revolution Plan (NIRP) as vehicles.

“It is our mandate to supply the manpower requirement of the NIRP and NEDEP in collaboration with other agencies of government like Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency of Nigeria (SMEDAN) and others,’’ she said.

According to her, the Bank of Industry (BoI) is a vital partner, which ITF can leverage on its financial muzzle to achieve some of the set goals. “Our desire to entrench this collaboration however, gave rise to the introduction of the National Skills Development Programme (NISDP).

Through the NISDP, we have trained 37,000 Nigerians from the 36 states of the federation and FCT, which is however, far low if the manpower requirements of the NIRP are to be met. I believe that this forum will, like others in the past, generate the ideas and innovations that will lead to the achievement of all we have set out to do,” she said.

Earlier, Mr John Enyi, Director of Training, said the forum was not an annual ritual, but equipped to proffer solutions to the country’s manpower deficit. The forum attracted hundreds of senior officials of ITF, stakeholders and trainers from across the country.

  • Tackling youth unemployment with vocational training

Tackling youth unemployment with vocational training

The Lagos State government in its drive to equip the youth with requisite entrepreneurial skills to realise their dreams of owning a business of their own held another edition of its annual Enterprise Day recently. MIRIAM EKENE-OKORO was there.

When Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babatunde Fashola, (SAN) inaugurated Enterprise Day, an annual event in the state, little did he know that the programme will turn out to become a spring board for the development of young entrepreneurs in the state.

This year’s celebration with the theme “Technical and Vocational Skills as a Gateway for Enterprise Development” held recently at NECA House in Alausa and attracted thousands of young people from the five technical colleges in the state, stakeholders from different sectors as well as government officials.

The forum provided opportunity for the students to interact with successful entrepreneurs, while ten young people that excelled in youth-led businesses and other entrepreneurial pursuits were honoured by the state government.

Some of the speakers at the events including President of McBride Research Laboratories, Mr. Cornell McBride; Chief Executive Officer of Ruff ‘n’ Tumble, Mrs. Adenike Ogunlesi and Founding Partner of Red Media Africa, Mr. Adebola Williams, who addressed the students shared their experience of rejection and success.

Citing his own example, McBride emphasised the need for humility, saying this was what helped him in business and in life. He explained that he knew why he wanted to build a business empire that would outlive him. But he said he did not know how to do it.

He acknowledged that he suffered a lot of disruption along the way and that in spite of what he went through, he did not resign to fate, but that his vision kept on driving him until he realised his ambition.

“I had to do all kinds of odd jobs to make money. And I was proud of doing those odd jobs, even though I went into the US Army when I relocated to the New York at 24. I later went to College in order to hone my entrepreneurial skill. I am simply a product of humility.”

Ogunlesi said that one other critical element, which she described as the cornerstone of every successful business was humility, urging the students that if they must build viable business empires, they must imbibe the spirit of professionalism that would require them to set rules and standards to guide the conduct of their business transaction.

Ogunlesi told the story of her life, saying she was indifferent in her academic pursuit. She said even though she gained admission to undertake a law programme at Ahmadu Bello University, Congo Campus, she only managed to spend two weeks on the programme.

Her reasons for quitting, she said, was not because she could not cope with the rigours of academic pursuit, but that she was pursuing what she had passion for rather than mere academic honours, adding that her passion gave birth to Ruff ‘n’ Tumble, now branded an indigenous firm with global appeal. According to her, the fact that she chose not to pursue her law degree did not make her an illiterate.

Ogunlesi advised the graduating students to take advantage of the incentive which the state government had given to help realise their dreams and visions.

Also, Adebola Williams, founding Partner of Red Media Africa encouraged the graduating students to rise up and position themselves as the country’s solution providers rather than liabilities. He said they do not have excuse not to succeed, citing the right platform and support that the state government has been giving through LASTVEB.

Addressing the gathering, General Secretary Lagos State Technical and Vocational Education Board (LASTVEB) Mr. Olawumi Gasper, said the programme was designed to develop a new generation of entrepreneurs.

Gasper explained that the programme will also assist students of the state’s technical colleges on the need for competence-based education, adding that in the last five years, the technical colleges in the state have already imbibed the entrepreneurial culture as embedded in the curriculum of the technical colleges.

He also noted that vocational skill trades are sufficiently infused with entrepreneurial elements that have harnessed the power of entrepreneurial competence.

According to him, “in the past, emphasis was placed on knowledge, skills, qualities, attitude, innovation and creativity among students of the technical colleges in the state, thereby preparing them to become self-reliant and competitive in the new dynamic and globalised world.”

He said the state’s entrepreneurship development project of the technical colleges alongside the chosen trade of the students “have no doubt contributed to job creation and acquisition of necessary skills by the graduates towards self-employment.  It is noteworthy that the private sector has been in support.

“To produce high-quality competence with entrepreneurial and technical skills for economic growth, well being of society and creation of long term wealth for individuals. In training them, the spirit of entrepreneurship is continuously being infused into learning, enabling trainees to seek entrepreneurial opportunities leading to success.”

Governor Fashola  who was represented by his Deputy Governor, Mrs. Adejoke Orelope-Adefulire said the government was not only developing the entrepreneurial capacity of the technical students, but had also put in place an arrangement for any graduate of its technical colleges “to access takeoff credit facility.”

The governor said the loans “will be given to the students at single-digit interest rate. Aside, the students are not expected to provide any collateral except that they are not from any of the government owned colleges of education. That is one of the reasons for the establishment of Lagos State Micro Finance Institution (LASMI).”

The take-off loan for the graduates of the state’s technical colleges will be processed through the LASMI while forms will be provided for the intended students at their various institutions to enable them apply. We have chosen to champion vocational and technical education because it focuses specifically on providing relevant skills while preparing them to be better positioned to develop new enterprises.

“We have not departed from the position that technical and vocational education presents a complementary approach to general education. Our students are given the right opportunity to explore and identify potential career goals and are provided with the resources needed to achieve goals through technical partnership with industry stakeholders,” he added.

Commissioner for Education, Olayinka Oladunjoye said: “Following the success of the first edition, the second edition is designed to celebrate legacies of successful entrepreneurs while also promoting immense opportunities in youth-led businesses and other entrepreneurial pursuits.”

One of the students, Miss Mariam Sunday, who graduated from Government Technical College, Epe in Computer Craft, said listening to the various speakers have  renewed her spirit not to let go of her dream of becoming a great entrepreneur in the future.

Also, Master Adeola Shobowale said “I came to the Enterprise Day confused, but I have hope now. My plan is to be an entrepreneur of global brand. This forum has equipped me with the necessary tips to realise my long-term dream.”

He told The Nation that he had just completed his programme in electrical installation and engineering and also undergone training in FATE Foundation, which he said, has helped him to master the procedure of writing business plan.

Shobowale said the next stage would be to start building his business and keep developing capacity in his area of specialization, which he said, would rank among the best in the next five years.

    FIBAN: Members for FRCN training

In line with the vision to ensure improved service delivery by its members, the leadership of the Freelance and Independent Broadcasters’ Association of Nigeria (FIBAN) has undertaken the sponsorship of eight members to the ongoing training programme of the Radio Nigeria Training School.

This, according to Yemi Sonde, President of FIBAN, is in fulfillment of his administration’s promise at inception.

In a recent interview with The Nation, Sonde, also a movie producer, had disclosed that his campaign promises revolved around four cardinal points: building the FIBAN national secretariat, which will be called FIBAN HOUSE, training of members at the Radio Nigeria Training School, transparency and accountability.

According to him, “When we talk about training, it includes workshop, internal training, encouraging members to do a lot of research and getting them to realise that they are the mirror of the society. It is not going to be all the members of FIBAN who will undergo training at this point. It is going to be in batches. I am sure you know that Radio Nigeria runs two sessions in a year. I welcome training and do a lot of research.”

He, therefore, urged the beneficiaries to take full advantage of the opportunity to improve themselves in the broadcasting profession and motivate others to follow in their footsteps.
