  • Mixed feelings for hairdresser delivered of triplets…two years after her two children were kidnapped

Mrs. Suliat Abdulazeez was in a far better mood than she had been when the reporter met her two years ago. Then, she was in agony.

Tears rolled down her eyes and she was inconsolable because it was only a few days after her two children, a boy and a girl, were stolen by a young woman who was working with her as an apprentice.

On this day, she was full of laughter, having just been delivered of a set of triplets two years after she lost her two children on November 25, 2016; a day that sticks in her memory as the darkest in her life. The day had started brightly only for the world to collapse on her at dusk. Six-year-old Kafayat and her four-year-old younger brother, Farouk, were taken away to the land of no return.

Two days before the sad incident, Suliat had accepted a young lady as an apprentice. The lady, who gave her name as Grace John, had indicated interest in learning braiding and hairdressing in Suliat’s hair salon and she felt no reason to deny her the chance to learn the trade.

Recalling the incident, she said: “The girl came to my shop on a Wednesday and said she wanted to learn hairdressing. I asked who her guarantor was, because she said she came alone. She said she was staying with a friend in the area and would have come with her but the friend had gone to work.

“The next day, she came to resume but without the guarantor. She claimed that her friend could not come because she had gone to work, saying that the friend would come with her the following Sunday.

“She then asked where she could buy soft drinks and I showed her the place as I was attending to a customer. But the girl went away for so long that I started wondering where she had gone to.

“She later came back and I asked her where she went for so long. She said she had to trek down the road to buy the soft drink because the woman I directed her to did not want to release the soft drinks without an empty bottles.

“I shared the soft drinks among my neigbours and also introduced her as my new apprentice.

“I had planned to visit her residence the following day, but I had to first attend a meeting of hairdressers in the community. I returned from the meeting around 4 pm only to discover that nobody knew where she had gone with my children. That was how we started searching for them.”

The father of the missing children, Fatai Abdulazeez, narrated how he had lost virtually everything he had in his bid to recover his children but his efforts yielded no result.

According to him, sometime in the first quarter of 2017, a few months after his children were abducted by the strange apprentice, he heard over the radio that a certain girl who stole a baby had been caught somewhere in Lagos after pretending that she wanted to learn work. He discussed with his wife on the possibility of the culprit being the same girl that stole their two children.

They then decided to go to the Force Headquarters and check. With the help of a certain officer, Abdulazeez was able to trace the alleged kidnapper to the State Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS). He met the officer in charge of the case who asked him whether he would be able to recognise the girl, but he said no; that it was his wife that knew her. He was told to go and bring his wife.

His wife came and shouted immediately she sighted the girl, saying it was the same girl that stole her two children. However, there was a twist. The girl denied ever meeting Suliat, much less kidnap her children. The police asked her whether there were other people who could identify the girl and Suliat told the police that her neighbours could do so.

Abdulazeez said that Suliat went back to the neighbourhood where his wife’s shop was located to bring some of the people that had seen the girl during the three days she was with her. According to Abdulazeez, the neighbours were initially reluctant to come with them for fear of being arrested by the police. But after much pleading, eight of the neigbours came and an identification parade was conducted and each of them identified the suspect as the one that stole the children.

Abdulazeez, however, said an officer told him that the police would need money to do a thorough investigation, since it would require traveling and other logistics. He said he contacted another senior police officer to help him intervene in the case and it was then he got to know that the lady in question, whose real name was Gladys Austin, had been charged to court for abducting the baby for which she was arrested.

Faced with the grim reality that the chance of getting his children back was getting slimmer, Abdulazeez said he had to engage a lawyer, one Barrister Sanni Saidi of Leo Chambers.

The title of a petition from Leo Chambers dated March 22, 2017 and addressed to the Assistant Inspector General of Police, Zone 2 Police Command Onikan, Lagos, reads: “Appeal on compassionate ground to assist, investigate and grill Gladys Austin (also known as John Grace), an apprentice who absconded with her employer’s kids (Kafayat and Farouk Azeez) sometimes in November 2016 and was subsequently caught by the operatives of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad for similar act of baby stealing.”

Saidi wrote: “We have the instruction and directive of our client to write to your good office in respect of the above subject matter. Our clients were at SARS section of the state command on Thursday, the 2nd day of March 2017 on the information that Gladys Austin (also known as John Grace) has been apprehended by “ever gallant” SARS operatives … On getting there, the mother of the kids was able to  identify Gladys Austin (also known as John Grace) as the apprentice who absconded with her kids and also an identification parade was also conducted and neigbours who had seen the apprentice at work were also called one after the other to ascertain the true identity of her.

“It’s on record that our client reported the incident at the Ojo Police Station sometimes in November 2016 and we hereby deem it fit to bring it to your notice, so that you can deploy your resolute, uncommon expertise and professionalism so that the kids can be relocated and reunited with their family.

“Sir, the manner in which SARS operatives have handled this matter is questionable and their sincerity in this matter is in doubt, despite the fact that there’s no issue to the identity of the suspects, three other suspects (Rita Eze, Ogechi Onweke and Mrs. Elizabeth) were arrested for human trafficking trade with the suspect. We hereby seek the intervention of your good office to take up this matter as a superior authority.”

Asked what was the response of Zone 2, Saidi said: “At State Command, Ikeja, SARS section, when the lady was apprehended, they did identification parade. The mother of the children was able to identify the lady but she denied. So, while we were trying to see how to transfer the matter to Zone 2 and all that, so that a proper investigation could be done, all of a sudden, the suspects, including Gladys Austin, were charged to court.

“We proceeded to Zone 2, wrote a petition and they demanded for money. I think we raised the money for them. That was just it. What we wanted was for them to call those police officers who charged the case to court without investigating our own matter.

Still fighting for the recovery of his children, Abdulazeez wrote a petition dated July 31, 2017 to the Director, Office of the Public Defender, Ministry of Justice, Lagos. But while a lawyer was assigned to the case, there was little that could be done as he kept spending money going to the Surulere office of the Office of the Public Defender without making any progress.

He said his children’s abductor had caused a lot of problems in his home. He said he could not concentrate on his work as an auto mechanic. He could no longer stay in his shop and attend to clients to make money and take care of his family. He has had to sell a plot of land and another partially developed plot.

He said that after spending all the money to see whether he could get his children back, there was no success. He said he had had to slow down as the incident was taking a toll on his family. His wife, Suliat, was so depressed that she attempted killing herself with sniper. Luckily, she was rescued.

With Suliat delivered of a set of triplets, our correspondent contacted the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Elkanah Bala, on the effort being made by the police to recover the missing children. Bala, who only recently took over as the PPRO of the Lagos State Police Command, sympathised with the family and requested to see the father of the children. He referred the case back to the SARS Department of the Lagos Police Force.

The Deputy Officer In-charge of the department, Mr. Adigun Abdulfatai, after listening to the father of the missing children and also hearing from the officer in charge of the case, explained that as at that time the alleged kidnapper of the children was charged to court, there was nothing else they could do since the girl had been in detention for weeks and could not be kept there longer.

He also explained that the department did all it could to see if they could get the truth from the alleged kidnapper with regard to where she took the children to, but the girl did not admit to stealing the children. He said there about 10 families that came forward at the time to claim that the girl stole their children and she denied all.

There is however a ray of hope for the family of Abdulazeez as the SARS boss has called for the file of Gladys to know its current status and also look for a way to unravel the whereabouts of Kafayat and Farouk.

There seems a possibility that the newly born triplets could unite with their elder siblings.

  • Mother of five delivers triplets in Kwara

A 38-year-old trader, Mrs Deborah Ogunsola, was at the weekend delivered of triplets at the General Hospital, Omu-Aran, Irepodun Local Government area of Kwara State.

Mother and the babies were in good condition yesterday, according to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

The triplets, two boys and a girl, were said to have been delivered within minutes after the first baby was delivered at 12:11 a.m. through caesarean section.

Mr Joel Adeyemi, the Director (Nursing Services) at the hospital, described the condition of the mother and the babies as clinically perfect.

“The mother and the babies are in the normal ward and doing fine,” he said.

“Although, the babies were delivered through surgery, the babies’ weights and condition, health wise, are perfect.”

Adeyemi said the hospital had witnessed more than 10 deliveries of twins in the last one month.

Ogunsola, the mother of the triplet, who is a pepper seller, said she was excited and had no sleepless night over the birth of the babies, saying they were gifts from God.

“The Almighty God that gave them to me will surely provide for their upkeeps,” she said.

Mr Abiodun Ogunsola, an electrician and father of the triplet said he has no regret or fear over their birth.

He, however, said that the family would wholeheartedly welcome assistance from any individual or group as regard the medical bill and upkeep of the babies.

“Our God is awesome and kind; I know He will surely stand by the family,” he said.

  • My husband fled after scan result in December, says mother of triplets

A woman delivered of triplets last week  has said her husband ran away from home four months ago after her  scan result.

Mrs Ijeoma Uzoma gave birth to the babies last Thursday at Tolu Crescent Medical Centre at Ajileye Street, Bariga, Lagos.

She said : ‘’My husband left home since December when we did the scan and the results showed that I’m carrying triplets. I don’t  know where he is. I’ve not set my eyes on him since then. He left home without my notice. I wonder how he could abandon me in such condition. If he returns, I will tell him to go and see the government since they are the ones taking care of me,” she said.

Mrs Uzoma, who lives at Farayibi Street, Bariga appealed to  the public and the government to help her raise the babies.

“I don’t have anything. I’m still feeling pains. If the government can help with money, I will be glad. I used to hang umbrella to plait people’s hair in our house before delivery. I need money to raise these children and start business. I do not like begging; I can work if government can give me fund to establish myself,” she said.

She thanked Bariga Local Council Development Area (LCDA) Chairman Kolade Alabi for coming to her aid.

“God will bless him; the Lord will lift him and give him bigger position and others who came with him. They really made me happy,” she said.

The Nation learnt that the woman laboured for 14 hours at home before she was rushed to the hospital.

A senior local government official praised the Dr Mustafa Omotolani-led  team for saving the woman’s life.

According to her, the hospital did not ask for  deposit before attending to her.

Alabi said the gesture was part of his socio-economic promises during campaign period.

“People often dismiss politicians’ promises during campaign as lies but some of us are not out to deceive people because we believe we can contribute our quota to assisting humanity.

“These children could be future governors, ministers, business moguls even president of our country. We do not know what the future holds for them, hence the need to take care of them. Besides, in Bariga, we want increase in our population,” Alabi said.

  • Man flees after wife gives birth to triplets

    •Council chief settles hospital bill

A man has abandoned his wife, Ijeoma Uzoma,  after she gave birth to triplets in  a private hospital in Bariga, Lagos.

Bariga Local Council Development Area (LCDA) Chairman Kolade Alabi has come to the rescue of the woman and her children, but her husband has yet to show up.

The babies were delivered premature at Tolu Crescent Medical Centre at Ajileye Street, Bariga, on Wednesday.

On hearing that the babies required immediate medical attention, their father was said to have disappeared.

Their mother’s younger sister simply identified as Joy contacted the council chairman for help on Thursday night.

Alabi, The Nation learnt,  sent some of his top officials to confirm the information.

After their report,  he led the Head of Administration,  Mrs Toyin Senaike, Medical Officer of Health Dr Wasiu Owoyele, Supervisor for Health Kunle Dabiri, and council Treasurer Femi Apata, among others, to the hospital.

After meeting with the hospital owner,  Dr Mustafa Omotolani, Alabi promised to offset the bill.

He asked the council’s  medical team to work with  the hospital to ensure that Mrs Uzoma and her triplets got the best medical attention.

He gave the woman money and some gifts.

Yesterday, Alabi praised  Joy for calling his attention  to her sister’s plight.

“The local government is not only the third tier of government, it is the closest to the people and people must endeavour to contact the council for their needs. I do not see the reason why the woman’s husband should run away. That is not the solution. Children are gifts from God,” he said.

A Ward ‘D’ Councillor, Princess Yemisi Adeliyi,  and some ward leaders also visted the woman and presented her with some provisions.

The Nation learnt that the woman and her children may be moved to the general hospital.

  • Triplets wipe off nine years’ tears

Triplets wipe off nine years’ tears

I kept going from one hospital to another, seeing one consultant after another and they all ran series of tests; sometimes they will give me drugs to take but still it will not work, sometimes family will come and say, take this one and that one, a lot of concoctions, whenever we returned home for Sallah, family will bring a lot of things for me to take which they believed will boost my fertility and praying for me as someone that was looking for the fruit of the womb but still nothing happened. The journey was not easy but I thank God for today.”

Fate dealt Adekemi Haleem a terrible blow. After nine years of  marriage she remained childless. Her agony is over. She has been cuddling her triplets and smiling into their faces.

She has a supportive husband who always asked her to put her faith in God, but she still felt incomplete without kids and was determined to find a solution.

“It was not easy throughout the years, even though my husband was not disturbing me; in fact he was so supportive he is the kind of man that has faith in God more than me. Whenever I was worried he told me not to be because it is God that gives. But to me as a woman I believe that you cannot just sit down and fold your arms, I had to try everything.

“I used to tell people that I am very lucky that I have a very understanding family. At no time during the nine years did anyone ever insult or call me names, they were all so supportive at all times, the support I got from everyone around did not make me go to the negative extent in search for the fruit of the womb. Instead I kept praying and believing that God will do it for me but I still made moves medically to ensure everything was OK, I checked myself, my husband did and the doctors realised that I had immune imbalance.”

Her pain has gone. Her three bundles of joy put an end to that.

Now Mrs Haleem can hand out a piece of advice to women still expecting their own bundles of joy.

She advised them to be patient, pray and work towards what they want, according to her, you cannot just be praying and not doing anything, you have to go for medical checkup, she explained that some women spend all their time believing it is someone from their families that is stopping them from conceiving, instead of standing on the believe that there is nothing that God cannot do, even if someone is behind it, God she said, will one day answer.

She also added that when women go to the hospital and are told they have no problem, they should keep trying and not just sit back and do nothing again but when they have a problem, they should tackle it.

“When we eventually went in for In vitro fertilization (IVF) treatment and I finally got the news that it was a success and I was pregnant, I was so excited, I could not sleep, I just kept touching my stomach and praying to God to keep my baby for me. I was so lucky throughout the pregnancy, initially I was having ulcer but at a time, it subsided, my blood pressure was normal throughout the pregnancy, had no complications, I was so lucky.

“As a nurse I see a lot of things women go through during labour.

“I knew that I had immune problems and I tried to tackle it, it’s not everyone that goes for IVF treatment that becomes successful in the first try. I have a doctor friend who became successful in her sixth try, some people will want to discourage you, or tell you that it will not be successful in Nigeria, I did mine here in Abuja and it was a success, it can be done successfully on our doorsteps here. The important thing is to have faith that yours will be different and it will, a lot of people now have good and happy homes because of IVF treatments.”

Her excited husband Jalee Haleem, a mining engineer from Iwo in Osun State, who already calls himself Papa Triplets, refers to the birth of his two sons and a daughter as an uncommon favour.

He said that they finally decided to go for IVF treatment after nine years of praying and going for medical checkups, he added that it was not easy because people tried to discourage them by giving them instances of people who have failed in the process.

“As Africans our mentality is different most people find in difficult to come to terms with IVF because it is not our technology, if it was ours, people will find it easy to key into it instead of suffering from infertility.

“Most people have bias against it because of the failures probably recorded by others but in all I give all the glory to God because even when you get to the hospital for IVF, it gets to a stage during the procedure that they give you a form to fill where it indicates that they themselves push it to God after they have done their best, the success will be in God’s hands.

“Taking care of the triplets is all by God’s doing, we are Muslims and in the Quran, Allah says in a verb that you kill not your children for fear of want because whoever God has created, he will provide sustenance for the person. It’s been God, since he gave them to us, we are taking care of them and they are happy. My dream for them is that whatever they decide to be in life, they will be on top of their careers.

“To make things easier for Nigerians, the government should help so that the price of the drugs given during IVF can be subsidised for people, most of the centers where this is done are specialized centres if the government can help them in a way because the drugs are all imported with the present exchange rate, if the government can help in a way that it will be subsidised, then it will be helpful and more people will be able to access it.”

  • Couple, triplets detained in hospital over unpaid bill

Couple, triplets detained in hospital over unpaid bill

THE joy of Waklek Gotus, whose wife, Gotus was delivered of a set of triplets have been turned into relative sadness. Reason. The couple and their babies are currently being detained at a State General Hospital, Pankshin, Jos, Plateau State, over their inability to pay the hospital bill for the delivery of the babies.

Medical personnel of the Pankshin General hospital, in Pankshin local government of Plateau state were said to have assisted the mother of the triplets to deliver the babies through Caesarian.

One of the hospital staff anonymously said: “The woman was rushed to the hospital after a prolonged labour at home, it is obvious that the woman and the husband were too poor to seek medical assistance and so preferred to deliver at home.

But when it was obvious the woman had not energy to deliver the babies on her medical doctor saw the critical condition of the woman and had no option that to deliver the babies through caesarean which was successful. If not for the caesarean this woman would have died. However, the unpaid bill become a burden on the couple as the hospital authorities would not let them go unless they offset the bill totalling N165,000.

The distraught couple with the triplets

The family were discharged from the hospital a week after the delivery, but have remained in the hospital for another three weeks for lack of funds. The breakdown of the bill shows, the caesarean surgery costs N75,000 and other charges put at N90,000, bringing the total to N165,000. The couple pleaded with the authorities of Pankshin Local Government for help, but got nothing, hence, the need to call on the general public for help as their bill might continue to increase daily at the hospital.

  • My story, by runaway father of triplets …as he returns

My story, by runaway father of triplets …as he returns

There was infectious joy penultimate Thursday when a jobless man, Isiaka Yusuf, who absconded after his wife was delivered of a set of triplets reunited with his wife and babies.

The identical triplets were named Ameerat, Zainab and Ahmed.

Yusuf’s homecoming followed appeals by sympathisers, including the Commissioner for Youth and Social Development, Lagos State, Princess Uzamat Akinbile-Yussuf, who urged him to return home for the sake of his family during a visit to their residence a few days ago.

The Nation had exclusively reported on Saturday May 21, that Yusuf bolted shortly after he was asked to pay N500, 000 as hospital bill following a ceasarian operation carried out on his wife when she was delivered of the babies.

In the report, Yusuf, who spoke with our correspondent on the telephone, said he decided to stay away since he doesn’t have any means of taking care of my wife and children.

Our correspondent also reported on Saturday May 28 how Akinbile-Yusuf and Executive Secretary of Agbado Oke Odo Local Council Development Area, Hon. David Famuyiwa, donated cash and baby items to the triplets’ mother.

Speaking with The Nation during a visit to his residence at No 4, Agesinjaweifa Street, Temidire area of Alagbado, Lagos suburb, Yusuf said he was forced to leave home because of lack of money to take care of his wife and children.

His wife, Idowu, could not hide her joy for seeing her husband over one month after her husband left home.

She said:” I was more than happy when he returned home on Thursday. His return followed appeals by concerned people. His presence has strengthened my morale and hope that things would get better for us.I thank all those who have been supporting our family through cash and donation of items for my babies since my plight was brought to the notice of members of public through The Nation newspaper.

Yusuf gave reasons for his controversial disappearance from home, saying: “It was never my intention to abandon my family but I was forced to leave home unannounced when doctors demanded N500, 000 as hospital bill after my wife was delivered of the babies.

“I also became worried after the babies exhausted 50 pieces of diapers within four days. And when I couldn’t think of how to salvage my situation, I decided to leave my family to their fate by absconding from home. I could barely feed let alone pay hospital bill having lost my job as cab driver.

“I left home for Lakowe area of Ajah where I was sleeping inside vehicles parked in a filling station. My colleagues were only responsible for my feeding and I was hoping that I could return to my job as cab driver soon”.

He explained that his return became inevitable following calls from concerned people who read his wife’s story published in The Nation.

“Although, my sister, who was staying with my wife, had urged me to return home but I did not listen to her. I was however encouraged to come home after some concerned persons who read the story in your newspaper (The Nation) called me on the telephone and asked me to return to my family.

“One of those who called me was my acquaintance in Alagbado and a brother who lives in Ondo State. They claimed to have heard about my plight on radio stations during newspaper reviews.”

It was learnt that a woman identified simply as Iya Nla has paid Yusuf’s two-year-rent arrears and also bought a brand new motorcycle for him, so he could use it to work as a commercial motorcyclist.

Yusuf added: “ I am not thinking of leaving my family again, even though I still need financial support to take care of my children. I thank everyone who has supported us including the commissioner(Akinbile-Yusuf); Agbado/Oke Odo council chairman(Famuyiwa);Iya Nla for their generosity.”

  • Succour for abandoned mother of triplets

Succour for abandoned mother of triplets

The Lagos Commissioner for Youth and Social Development, Princess Uzamat Akinbile-Yussuf, on Tuesday, visited Mrs Idowu Yusuf, the mother of triplets who was abandoned by her husband because she had multiple births.

Her visit followed an exclusive report published last Saturday by The Nation on the plight of Idowu and her triplets.

Akinbile-Yussuf arrived at the distraught nursing mother’s residence at No 4,

Agesinjaweifa Street in the Temidire area of Alagbado, a Lagos suburb at about 11 am.

She donated cash gift, beverages, baby food, and diapers among others items.

Speaking, the commissioner urged the father of the babies to come back home for the sake of his children and wife.

She said the state government, led by Governor Akinwunmi Ambode, has initiated training programmes that would make people in the state self-reliant.

Her words: “I was really touched after reading the story in The Nation newspaper last Saturday. Children are supposed to be source of joy to parents. But it is sad that the father of the babies bolted because of lack of money to take care of them.

“I want to, therefore, urge him to return home because his children need him more than ever before. The fact that he is jobless does not mean he should abandon his family to fate. People, like the father of the babies, who are jobless can participate in some of the training programmes initiated by the state government to make them self-reliant.”

It was learnt that the Executive Secretary of Agbado/OkeOdo LCDA, Hon. David Famuyiwa has also donated cash and other items to the mother of the identical triplets, named Ameerat, Ahmed and Zainab.

In the story, Idowu cried out for financial support and the return of her husband, Isiaka Yusuf, who allegedly absconded from home shortly after she was delivered of a set of triplets on April 6, 2016.

The couple has two other children- Yusuf,10, and Mariam,7,before the birth of the triplets.

The Nation learnt that Idowu’s husband, a cab operator, has been out of job lately.

He was said to have abandoned his wife and the babies in a private hospital where they were born through Caesarian section, after he was asked to pay the sum ofN500, 000 as hospital bill.

Speaking from hiding, the absentee father of the babies told our correspondent in a telephone conversation that ”May God not turn our joy into sadness. I had to abscond after doctors at a private hospital, where my wife was delivered of the triplets, demanded a whopping sum of N500, 000 as cost of carrying out Caesarian operation. It was my wife’s relatives who contributed about N250, 000 as part payment before my wife and babies were discharged.

“It was not my intention to abandon my family, but I lost my job as a cab operator after the engine of the car I was driving knocked down and the owner has refused to change or repair it. I felt ashamed of myself and decided to stay away, since I don’t have any means of taking care of my wife and children.”

While thanking Akinbile-Yussuf and others for their kind gesture, Idowu said:” I really don’t know what to say, but to thank the commissioner for her kind gesture. May God continue to bless her and others who have shown interest in my plight.”

  • Father of triplets absconds

    Father of triplets absconds

The rivulets of tears that ran down Idowu Yusuf’s brow on Tuesday revealed that all is not well with the petty trader. Her husband, Isiaka Yusuf, allegedly absconded from home shortly after she was delivered of a set of triplets on April 6, 2016.

Speaking with our correspondent during a visit to their residence at No 4, Agesinjaweifa Street in the Temidire area of Alagbado, a Lagos suburb, Idowu seeks help from kind-hearted Nigerians to take care of the triplets named Ameerat,  Ahmed and Zainab.

She also cried out for help in search of her husband, a native of Osi community near Omu Aran, Kwara State.

It was learnt that the couple already has two children- Yusuf,10, and Mariam,7,before the birth of the triplets.

The Nation learnt that Idowu’s husband, a cab operator, has been out of job lately.

Recalling the events leading to the birth of the children and how her husband bolted, Idowu said: “ He left me in the hospital shortly after  I was delivered of the babies. Since then, he has refused to come home to see his children. I learnt that he stays in the Ajah area of Lagos but I have not set my eyes on him.

“Each time we called him on his mobile phone, he would tell us that he cannot come home because he had no money to give me for the upkeep of the children. Even his relatives have fruitlessly begged him on the telephone to come home.

“He used to be a very caring husband until the birth of our triplets. In fact, he started misbehaving after a scan showed that I was carrying a set of triplets in my womb. He did not even wait to name his new babies or show up when we invited some Muslim clerics to conduct the naming ceremony right in the hospital”.

Idowu explained that a private hospital where the children were born had demanded the sum of N500, 000 for the delivery done through caesarian operation.

“I was delivered of the children through Ceasarian operation and the hospital bill is N500, 000. It was through the assistance of friends, relatives and neighbours that we were able to pay the sum of N250, 000 out of the money. We had to sign an undertaking to pay up by the end of this month. As I speak, we don’t even have money or hope of paying up.”

The 37-year-old native of Ogbomosho, Oyo State, asked for help from members of public saying: “ I want to appeal to kind people to come to my assistance because I don’t have money to take care of the babies. I don’t know who to approach again for money after my relatives and friends contributed part of the hospital bill.

“Things are getting worse for me as I could barely feed myself not to talk of the babies. As I speak, I have not had breakfast and the babies take only breast milk. My husband ran away because he lost his job as cab operator after his car broke down beyond repair. He has since bolted and left us to our fate. I am begging Nigerians to come to my aid in the name of God.”

She added: “I also want to urge my husband to consider coming home to see his babies.”

In his words, the landlord of the house, Elder Ramoni Birijo, said:”Yusuf should endeavour to come home. We all know that things are tough for him since he lost his job, but abandoning his wife and babies is not a good option to run away from his responsibilities.

“He moved into my house about seven years ago and was paying his rent as and when due until he became jobless. He has not paid me for more than one year now but I cannot eject him because he used to be a very good tenant. He should come home for the sake of his new babies and I urge Nigerians with good heart to assist them in taking care of the babies.”

In a telephone conversation with our correspondent, Yusuf said he took the painful decision to abandon his wife and babies after doctors demanded N500, 000 as hospital bill.

”May God, not turn our joy into sadness.

“It was not my intention to abandon my family, but I lost my job as cab operator after the engine of the car I was driving knocked down and the owner has refused to change or repair it. I felt ashamed of myself and decided to stay away since I don’t have any means of taking care of my wife and children.”

    Triplets’ family gets help

Good Samaritan has settled the bill of a woman detained in hospital after giving birth to triplets.

Rotimi Rahmon secured the woman and her babies’ release from Sure Mercy Hospital in Ota, Ogun State, through the African Foundation for Environment and Development (AFED), a non-governmental organisation led by Sola Afariogun

Mrs Bolanle Aremu  gave birth to the triplets on February 20, through caesarean section. She had four children before their birth and this informed her attempt to abort the pregnancy. The father, Olagoke Aremu, a carpenter, said he could not afford the medical bills, hence the refusal of the management of the hospital to discharge the babies.

This informed the intervention of AFED, and subsequent payment of bills by Rahmon.

The family thanked AFED and Rahmon for the gesture, calling for more assistance from members of the public for the upkeep of the babies.
