Triplets held by hospital over medical bills

A set of triplets delivered eight weeks ago are  being held in Asaba, Delta State  by the management of a private hospital in over inability of the parents to raise the sum of N723, 100.00 to offset medical bills.

Mr Godswill Echenim, father of the triplets told reporters  in Asaba that he took his wife to the private medical facility due to the prolong nationwide strike by doctors under the aegis of Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) in public hospitals.

Echenim, a self-employed man said the medical bill was too much for his family to bear and appealed to the government and good spirited individuals to come to his aid.

“For about seven weeks since the kids were delivered we have been at this hospital. I had registered my wife for ante-natal at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Asaba but because of the strike by doctors, I brought her here for the delivery.

“The kids were delivered through caesarean section and were taken to the incubator where they spent over one month before their discharge. Now the bill has come up to N723, 100.00 and still running because we are still here.

“So I am appealing to the government and the general public for help so that I would be able to bring up the babies in the way of God. We have spent over N60,000 for the nurse who was taking care of the babies at night.

“I have started buying food for them and they take a full can for three days. We buy pampers for N1500.00 which lasts for just three days. This is besides the drugs we have been buying. It is just too much for us, we need help from the public,” Echenim appealed.

He said the triplets were his first set of children since he got married over five years ago, adding that his wife had remained jobless after her graduation from Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma in Edo State.

  • Why I abandoned wife, day old triplets at the hospital – fleeing husband

Why I abandoned wife, day old triplets at the hospital – fleeing husband

The birth of a new born baby is a huge source of joy to many and much more if it is multiple births at a time, but for 32 years old  Jimoh Kabiru, an auto mechanic in Kuto area of Abeokuta, Ogun State, the experience is different.

Rather than embrace the bundles of joy with with open arm and jubilation, Kabiru had fled home, abandoning his wife and triplets at the Lantoro Catholic Hospital Abeokuta.

The wife, Mrs Tope Kabiru, a petty fashion designer, just delivered the triplets yesterday at the said hospital through caesarian session(CS) and the babies are still kept in  incubators to enhance their survival chances.

From his hideout, Kabi who said he makes about N1000 daily from his mechanic trade, told The Nation that he bolted from home when informed his wife had delivered triplets, because he does not have about N250,000 required to offset the hospital bill and buy basic things the babies need.

Kabiru said: “I ran away from and family members on being told my wife delivered three babies through operation. I have no money in hand for the expense.  I had already N50,000 my friends rallied to gather for me and there is no other way to get money. I will be requiring about N250,000:00 to settle the hospital bill and do other things.”

  • Woman delivers triplets in flood victims’ camp

A woman from Anambra East Local Government Area of Anambra State was yesterday delivered of a set of triplets at a flood victims’ camp.

Though her identity was not revealed, it was learnt that the woman is among those camped at Fr Joseph’s Primary School in Aguleri.

The widow of the late former Senate President, Dr Chuba Okadigbo, representing Anambra North, Margery Okadigbo, relived her experience in Awka, the state capital, when she visited the office of National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA).

Mrs Okadigbo, who was in tears, said she wanted to ensure that the relief materials from the Federal Government were distributed by the agency.

The senator noted that the situation in Anambra State had gone beyond party affiliation, saying it should be a collective responsibility of everybody and not the governments alone.

She said the woman at the Aguleri camp delivered a set of triplets – all boys – adding that the victims’ conditions were unbearable, especially the women.

Mrs Okadigbo said: “I am a woman; I know the pains those people are going through. Everybody has been swallowed up by the floods. This is not a good entry for me, seeing my people dying.

“I have been moving around the seven local government areas in my constituency, to ensure that the people are safe. The only local government in my area, which is still free of the floods, is Oyi. The other six are under water.

“Not only that, families are being separated as a result of the floods. Many people will die of hunger and starvation. There is a problem in the land.”

The senator said the National Assembly had called for a supplementary budget because of the problem, adding that many victims would benefit from the government’s relief package.

According to her, the floods may last longer than expected.

NEMA yesterday started the distribution of materials from the Federal Government at various camps in Anambra State.

NEMA’s South East Coordinator Dr Onimode Bamdele was injured when he was evacuating the victims.
