  • England Friendly: It is going to be difficult, says Troost-Ekong

Former Tottenham Hotspur youth-teamer William Troost-Ekong has commented on the upcoming friendly between England and Nigeria at the National Stadium in London on June 2, 2018.

The central defender has stated the friendly against the top team will test the national team’s preparation for the World Cup and has a message for the Super Eagles’ supporters based in the United Kingdom.

”I think it is a kind of game that the setting will speak for itself, I think we have to rise to the occasion especially playing at Wembley,” Troost-Ekong told Extra Time Soccer Live.

”I know we have a lot of Nigerian fans in England as well, so I don’t think it is going to be like playing away as much because we are going to have great support.

”It is going to be difficult but the same time it’s going to be the kind of test we want to have before the World Cup.

”I am sure something is going to go wrong in that match as well but it’s nice to test ourselves against a good team and to see where we are regarding the tournament.”

Troost-Ekong has been named in the Super Eagles starting line-up for this evening’s international friendly against Democratic Republic of Congo in Port Harcourt.

  • Troost-Ekong on target as Simbas hold Eagles

DR Congo came away from the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium with a credible performance and result yesterday, scoring with 11 minutes remaining to draw 1-1 with Nigeria.

William Troost-Ekong scored for an experimental Nigeria side but Malango Ngita equalised for DR Congo in the 79th minute.

Simy Nwankwo and Junior Lokosa were handed their debuts in the game, and Arsenal winger Alex Iwobi replaced Kelechi Iheanacho in the 46th minute.

Starting sluggishly, the away side were on the ropes early on. Simy ghosted to the box and released a shot which hit the bar.

Goalkeeper Francis Uzoho stuck out his legs to thwart Benik Afobe from close range in the seventh minute.

The opener arrived in the 14th minute. Ogenyi Onazi’s floated free-kick wasn’t well dealt with by the Congolese defenders, the ball arrived in the path of Ekong who applied the finishing touch.

As it is typical for these friendlies, much of the game was quiet but for Afobe was found by Issama Mpeko to flash the ball across the face of goal late in the first half.

Debutant Simy was menacing in the game despite being starved of service. The striker delivered a brilliant header from Ola Aina’s long thrust which forced goalkeeper Anthony Mossi to a save.

DR Congo pressed forward to equalise and attacked with intent. Mpeko was denied from close range by Uzoho.

And that warning sign wasn’t heeded by Nigeria. Aina, who replaced Echiejile at half-time, should have let it go.

He hauled down Mpeko and the referee pointed to the penalty spot. The tackle was outside the box.

Malango Ngita sent Uzoho the wrong way for the leveller.

    Announcing the pregnancy the Bursaspor defender took to his Instagram to share a photo of his partner with the caption;

“We can’t wait to meet you!”Her baby bump is obvious in the Instagram photo.

Close friends and teammates who have been keeping an eye on the love birds believe they are a good pair set to enjoy flourishing romance and possibly blissful marriage.

Troost-Ekong’s dedication to the relationship some have equally noted is very glaring as he never misses an opportunity to give his partner a treat whenever time permits.

The former junior international who has so far made over 18 appearances for the senior national team is among super Eagles players being tipped to showcase their skill at the World cup in Russia.

Troost-Ekong was born in the Netherlands to a Nigerian father, and Dutch mother. He represented the Netherlands at under-19 and under-20 youth levels.

He made his senior international debut for Nigeria on 13 June 2015, playing 90 minutes in an AFCON qualifier against Chad.

He enjoyed  3 starts for the senior team in 2016 before being selected by Nigeria’s under-23 team in their 35-man provisional squad for the Rio 2016 Summer Olympics.

Troost-Ekong who has never hidden his love for the Green white Green jersey since joining the national team fold, said in a recent interview that playing for the national team has indeed change his life even as he described Nigeria’s qualification for the World cup in Russia as a huge achievement worthy of celebration.

  • Rohr picks Mikel, Moses, Balogun, Troost-Ekong as Eagles stars

  • Sunday Oliseh is Wrong, says Troost-Ekong

Sunday Oliseh is Wrong, says Troost-Ekong

Russia bound Super Eagles defender Troost- Ekong is happy to have proven Ex-Super Eagles handler Sunday Oliseh
    wrong.
Ekong who was in his superlative form in the course of the world cup qualifiers so far,  recalled that the former Eagles handler had said he was too soft for comfort especially for a defender.

The central defender who made his senior international debut for Nigeria on 13 June 2015, playing 90 minutes in an AFCON qualifier against Chad made three starts for the senior team in 2016 before he was selected by Nigeria’s under-23 team in their 35-man provisional squad for the Rio 2016 Summer Olympics, where he played every minute possible and went on to win Bronze.

Recall that Oliseh only used the central defender for Tanzania and Democratic Republic of Congo, before he stopped inviting him for the national team assignments.

Coach Gernot Rohr deem fit to invite the defender for Nigeria’s 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign, and now that the country has qualified, even with a game at hand, Ekong feels vindicated in his decision to play for Nigeria.

In an interview with ACLSport‘s Chief Football Writer, Fisayo Dairo, he said: “I wanted to play for Nigeria and as soon as Stephen Keshi called me in 2015 and asked if I was interested, yeah, it was a dream come true to play for Nigeria against Chad that time.”

”The Olympics was like a restart for my international career. I was part of the Super Eagles until Sunday Oliseh took me out because he said Oyibo boys are too soft,” Troost-Ekong has said.

He added: ”I hope he (Oliseh) is watching his TV now and see us going to the World Cup.” No ill feelings with him, I saw him at the Olympics last year and we spoke briefly, though he didn’t believe in me then, but I think Nigerians can see now what I can do.”

Troost-Ekong’s partnership with German-born Leon Balogun in central defence especially in the campaign against Chad, Mali, Tanzania, Cameroon and Zambia) has been adjudged the worthwhile.

Troost-Ekong and his Nigerian teammates still have one more game in the world cup qualifying series against Algeria in November “I hope to be in good form and I hope that Coach Gernot Rohr will call me up even for the World Cup squad and same for other guys.”
