ACReSAL: Gov Sani disburses over N375m to Kaduna farmer groups

Governor Uba Sani has presented cheques worth $25,000 to each of 10 communities in Kaduna State, totaling over N375 million, as a Community Revolving Fund to support farmer groups.

The fund, provided through the World Bank-assisted Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscapes (ACReSAL) Project, aims to help beneficiaries invest in climate-smart rain-fed agriculture.

The benefiting communities include Anchau, Kuzuntu, Kubau, Zuntu, Jenau, Likoro, Jaja, Hunkuyi, Kudan, and Danmahawayi.

Speaking at the event, Governor Sani reaffirmed that the initiative aligns with his administration’s commitment to rural transformation by supporting registered farmer groups under Community Interest Groups (CIGs) with loans.

He announced that loan disbursement under his administration’s agricultural support scheme would begin in Kudan and Kubau local governments in the first phase, benefiting 82 CIGs.

The second phase will roll out in the second quarter of the year, covering four local governments in the Central and Southern Senatorial Zones, along with two Area Councils in the Northern Senatorial Zone.

The final phase will extend to the remaining 11 local government areas.

Governor Uba Sani maintained that ‘’Kaduna State is proud to be at the forefront of initiatives aimed at combating climate change and ensuring sustainable livelihoods for our people.”

“Over the years, we have implemented a range of strategic policies and programs designed to enhance ecological conservation, mitigate the impact of climate change, and promote economic resilience among our citizens.

“With the support of ACReSAL, the State Government unveiled a 10-year Climate Change Policy, trained 500 women, youth, and school-feeding vendors in the production of biomass briquettes as an alternative to wood fuel,” he added.

The Governor recalled that his administration had identified 22,435 hectares of degraded land for land restoration, provided state-of-the-art weather station.

Governor Uba Sani also procured the Amphibious Excavator, otherwise known as Swamp Buggy, for the prevention and control of erosion, deepening of waterways, maintenance and cleaning of rivers.

Earlier, the Task Team Lead of the ACReSAL project, Dr Joy Iganya Agene commended Kaduna State for its commitment to environmental sustainability, which is evident in the state being one of the best performing sub nationals in the country.

Also speaking at the event, Minister of Environment, Malam Balarabe Abbas Lawal, warned that Community Revolving Fund is a loan and not a grant, adding that it will function as an investment fund for community and farmer groups.

“The loan is intended for communities, facilitating circulation among farmers and sustained through groups that ensure the loan remains active within your community via timely repayment, thereby enabling other farmers to reap the benefits,” he added.

Malam Balarabe noted: “The ACReSAL project constitutes a significant component of the Federal Government’s aim to rehabilitate one million hectares of degraded land, contributing to the overarching goal of restoring four million hectares by the year 2030.”

“The initiative will additionally contribute to diminishing the susceptibility of countless individuals living in extreme poverty in northern Nigeria, thereby enhancing their capacity to engage in the stewardship of their surroundings,” he added.

Gov Sani mobilizes contractor for Kagarko township roads

Kaduna State Governor, Senator Uba Sani, has mobilized a contractor to commence the long-awaited construction of Kagarko township roads in Kagarko Local Government Area, addressing years of infrastructural neglect in the region.

Kagarko, the local government headquarters, along with other major towns within the council, has suffered from prolonged underdevelopment. Governor Sani, as part of his rural transformation agenda, has pledged to reverse this trend.

The construction work, awarded to indigenous firm Farmtrac Nigeria Limited, officially commenced with the Chairman of Kagarko Local Government, Hon. Muhyideen Abdullahi Umar, expressing gratitude to Governor Sani for prioritizing the area. He lamented that since the return of democracy and particularly since the All Progressives Congress (APC) took power in Kaduna State in 2015, Kagarko had not benefited from a single kilometer of road construction.

“The commencement of this road project is significant and a long-held dream come true,” Umar stated. Addressing an enthusiastic crowd that gathered to welcome the contractors, he said, “Senator Uba Sani, in his rural transformation programme, deemed it necessary to extend this developmental stride to Kagarko.”

He added, “With the caliber of equipment on-site, we are optimistic that within the next few weeks, our people will begin to enjoy tarred roads in this local government. Governor Uba Sani has assured us that an additional 10 kilometers of asphalt roads will be approved for construction soon.”

The local government chairman further commended the governor for assigning Farmtrac Nigeria Limited, a reputable indigenous contractor, to handle the project. “We are confident that the contractor will deliver quality work that will stand the test of time,” he said. He also urged residents to safeguard construction equipment and cooperate with workers to ensure smooth project execution.

The District Head of Kagarko, Alhaji Garba Lawal, also expressed appreciation for Governor Sani’s initiative, pledging the community’s full cooperation in fostering development and peace in Kaduna State.

Similarly, a prominent political figure in the council, Alhaji Shehu Tafarki, lauded the governor for fulfilling his promises. He recalled that the people of Kagarko had been assured of numerous infrastructural projects, including roads and electricity, by the previous administration, but none materialized.

The 23 local government chairmen in Kaduna state have passed a vote of confidence on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Governor Uba Sani, dismissing recent criticisms against his administration as the handiwork of “political jobbers.”

Addressing the press at a conference in Kaduna on Friday, the Chairman of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), Kaduna State chapter, Hon. The ALGON chairmen described Uba Sani as a “unifying governor” who has fostered peace across religious, ethnic, and political divides in the state.

“He has provided an environment where all citizens can pursue their livelihoods without fear of intimidation or harassment. His administration has also been proactive in addressing security challenges through strategic and diplomatic interventions,” they added.

  • How Tinubu saved Atiku from OBJ, El-Rufai

How Tinubu saved Atiku from OBJ, El-Rufai

Somehow, the fiction has gone around that Nasir El-Rufai backed Uba Sani to be governor. El-Rufai has allowed this untruth to fester for a number of reasons.

One, he wants them to call Governor Sani a traitor, so people who know El-Rufai’s biography of about-face would not focus on him, El-Rufai. Two, he wants to divert attention from the raft of questions over his handling of Kaduna State finances while he was governor. Three, he wants to make N150 billion bigger than N428 billion. It is his mathematics of duplicity.

That is his foul strategy. As a man who likes attention more than a god, he started this when he sat beside a man, Atiku, he first betrayed in public life. And, for irony, he was talking about loyalty. But on that panel, he emitted disloyalty. That is because he was too angry to know he was contradicting himself. It is the Shakespeare quote in his play Tempest: “I am vexed; bear with my weakness.”

To start with, Governor Uba Sani never enjoyed El-Rufai’s support to be governor. He won the primary in spite of him, just as President Tinubu won the APC primary in spite of Muhammadu Buhari. But this did not force Governor Sani into fury. As Churchill wrote, “in war, resolution; in victory, magnanimity.” That explained why he has never thrown any invective against his predecessor since he became governor. Last week, he described his relationship with El-Rufai as “cordial.” It turned out to be a bullet rather than an oil of gladness to the mallam. He fought back, rather than exchange the courtesy. For him any act of civility is dubious. Fight is better than nice.

It was then he threw a charge that the Tinubu government has given Kaduna N150 billion, and hence his successor has been in sync with the president.

Read Also: Time Nigeria turned its abandoned assets into revenues

Governor Sani has not confirmed the charge. My investigation shows the mallam does not have the facts. But Governor Sani has decided to give El-Rufai an arm rather than an ammunition.

But El-Rufai loves turbulence more than tranquility. He is not the sort who loves brotherly love. He must be very angry he has heard nothing from his successor. Maybe Governor Sani would respond tomorrow. I don’t know. But up to the time of writing, he has chosen the path of Michelle Obama. “When they go low, we go high.” El-Rufai does not know much about height.

The charge of N150 billion is a clever-by-half ploy to divert attention from the over N400 billion , comprising projects he has not accounted for. For the sake of argument, if the state received N150 billion from the Tinubu government, should El-Rufai not be happy.

They are trying to clean up after his mess, yet he is angry. He is angry that Kaduna people are going to get a relief? Is it not strange that someone wants to save your people and you are up in arms? Is he so insensitive to the people? Is it not the same governor that is uniting the state after El-Rufai drove a wedge between north and south of the state, between Muslims and Christians, between rich and poor? Is he angry because he has worked to beat down prices? Is he angry at the peace dividends in the state? Is he boiling because Birnin Gwari is now calm?

What he is doing is the great betrayal: of his own people. Is he not the one betraying is successor by his claptrap tongue?

But he is now in the same boat with Atiku, and pretending he is still in the APC. That is pharisaic.  It is an act of cowardice not to state where he is. With his tongue he draws himself to APC but we can decode his own heart from his lips. Maybe the nation’s memory is short about El-Rufai’s past.

The social media is circulating a quote on how the Owu chief or OBJ characterized the former Kaduna State governor in his memoirs.

But let me show how even the same Atiku was saved by then Governor Bola Tinubu from Obj’s clutches who was using El-Rufai as his point man.

Atiku was vice president and was at war with President Obasanjo, who took him to court to rid him of his immunity. Obj wanted to nail him for abandoning the PDP and moving over to the Action Congress.

Tinubu’s AC had penciled him down to run for president against Obasanjo’s pick, the late Umar Yar Adua.

With Tinubu’s backing, Chief Wole Olanipekun (SAN) defended Atiku showing that OBJ had no reason to undermine his immunity as vice president as guaranteed by the constitution. Those were the days that everyone accused OBJ of “overheating the polity.”

The Supreme Court ruled in Atiku’s favour. Miffed, Obj set up an administrative panel on Atiku, and who were those on the panel? Attorney general Bayo Ojo and, you guessed right, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, who was then the FCT minister. For Obidients’ information, our own Oby Ezekwesili was a member.

The panel recommended the banning of Atiku from public office for six years. But they made a mistake in the panel report. They nailed OBJ’s old friend turned adversary, Oyewole Fasawe, for financial impropriety, after deploying its EFCC to arrest him.

With Tinubu’s backing again, Chief Olanipekun took up the gauntlet and shredded the case against Fasawe as a way of discrediting the whole administrative panel’s report. The court upheld Olanipekun’s brilliance and threw away the case against Fasawe and the whole recommendation of the report, including the six-year ban on Atiku. It was a blow to OBJ. Tinubu saved Atiku and made it possible for him to run for president. Or else, the Adamawa chieftain would have sulked in limbo – as he is now – until the election cycle of 2015. So, we can see how much ingratitude flows in Atiku’s blood.

I recall in the period, during a book launch in Lagos, Atiku described Tinubu as more than a friend but a brother. And on the podium, Tinubu nodded. It was the same time, after securing the AC ticket, that he picked Ben Obi as his running mate to defy the man who saved him. Some people are not worthy of their salvation. Of course, that ticket was an electoral disaster. The rest, as they say, is history.

But at this time, El-Rufai was still OBJ’s boy, though it was Atiku, who nominated him to high office and the graces of the then President Obasanjo. For a man like El-Rufai, he likes the life of the moment. When Atiku was his man, he could have groveled before him and drooled with the Shakespearean phrase: “how fine my master is.” He would say the same about OBJ later. I wonder if he is not saying the same about Atiku today. Atiku could not accuse him because his own record of pirouettes are as sordid as the former Kaduna State governor. He probably wants Governor Sani to say same to him and he is upset the governor is not bowing. He wanted what historian Timothy Snyder calls “anticipatory obedience.”

Even the issue of the over N400 billion he has not accounted for was unveiled because, according to the governor and an investigation I conducted, the labour union wanted to shut down the state with industrial action. He had to show them the books, and explained the lack of finesse of his predecessor with the state’s resources. The labour leaders said so to this writer and was part of an over 5000-word expose in this newspaper last year. Governor Sani’s reluctance to cry out initially was part of his generosity to his friend and predecessor. But Mallam always has other ideas. Loyalty and conciliation are not part of them.

  • Kaduna APC consolidates ahead of 2027 under Uba Sani

Kaduna APC consolidates ahead of 2027 under Uba Sani

    • By Duniya Isa-Yesuf

As the political landscape in Nigeria continues to evolve, the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kaduna State is strategically positioning itself for the upcoming 2027 elections.

The recent defection of Michael Auta, the Southern Kaduna senatorial candidate for the Labour Party (LP) in the 2023 elections, has sent ripples through the political arena, signalling a significant shift in allegiance that could reshape the dynamics of Kaduna’s political future.

Auta’s decision to join the APC is rooted in the party’s commitment to inclusivity, integration, and a non-discriminatory approach championed by President Bola Tinubu and Governor Uba Sani. Michael Auta’s defection is not merely a personal political manoeuvre; it represents a broader trend of disillusionment with the LP’s ability to address the needs and aspirations of the people of Southern Kaduna.

Auta, who has been a prominent voice in the region, recognized the APC’s efforts to foster a more inclusive political environment.

His endorsement of the party’s policies and leadership reflects a growing consensus among many in Southern Kaduna who are eager to return to mainstream politics — an approach that promises to prioritize unity and development over division.

In his announcement, Auta has pledged to mobilize one million votes for President Tinubu and Governor Uba Sani in the upcoming elections. This ambitious commitment underscores the potential for the APC to consolidate its support base in Kaduna South, a region that has always been fragmented along ethnic and political lines.

Auta’s influence and grassroots connections could prove invaluable in rallying voters seeking a more cohesive and progressive political agenda.

The APC’s focus on inclusivity and integration is particularly significant in a state like Kaduna, which has faced its share of ethnic and religious tensions. The APC under Governor Uba Sani has made concerted efforts to bridge divides and foster a sense of belonging among all citizens, regardless of their background.

This approach resonates with many voters tired of the divisive politics that have plagued the region for years.

By embracing a policy of inclusivity, the APC is appealing to a broader electorate and laying the groundwork for sustainable governance that prioritizes the welfare of all citizens.

Auta’s defection also highlights the growing recognition of the APC as a viable alternative for those disenchanted with the  Labour Party’s (LP) direction. The LP, which gained traction in the last general elections, has struggled to maintain its momentum amidst internal challenges and external pressures.

As Auta and others like him transition to the APC, it becomes increasingly clear that the party is poised to capitalize on the LP’s vulnerabilities.

The APC’s ability to attract influential figures from rival parties is a testament to its growing appeal and the effectiveness of its outreach efforts. The defection of Auta said to be highly instrumental in LP’s performance during the 2023 elections, represents a significant loss to the LP and of course APC’s gain.

Speaking at his defection ceremony in his Fai ward, Jaba Local Government Area of Kaduna State, Auta stated that his decision to join the APC was driven by prevailing political realities and the overwhelming demand from his supporters.

He commended President Tinubu and Governor Uba Sani for their efforts in fostering peace and inclusivity in Kaduna State.

Aura highlighted the appointment of General Christopher Musa as the Chief of Defence Staff as a strong indication that Southern Kaduna had been fully integrated into the government.

“This government has given us a sense of belonging. Today, our people can go to their farms and businesses without fear. Unlike the previous administration, President Tinubu and Governor Uba Sani have not segregated us,” Auta stated. Last week, the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) Northern Nigeria chapter commended President Tinubu, citing his inclusive policy in appointments and project allocation. CAN said it was gladdening to note that the pre-2023 general election Muslim-Muslim rhetoric has been proven to be a mere cry of wolf where none existed.

Recalling his political strength, Auta reminded his supporters of his ability to mobilize grassroots support, citing his role in securing 294,000 votes for Peter Obi in 2023 without government backing.

“If I could achieve that as an opposition figure, imagine what we will do in 2027. I guarantee one million votes for President Tinubu and Governor Uba Sani.

The APC no longer has a problem in Southern Kaduna,” he declared.

Auta was enthusiastically received by members of his new party, the APC.

Dare Isuwa, the Fai Ward Chairman, described it as “the happiest day of my life”, expressing confidence that Auta’s influence would strengthen the APC’s grip on the region. He added: “He has laboured for this party before and now that he is back, the APC will only grow stronger.

“We are issuing his membership card today, and I do not doubt that whatever he contests under the APC, he will succeed.”

Meanwhile, Auta’s business associate, Elisha Yahaya, alleged that the LP betrayed Auta despite his enormous contributions. “Michael Auta built the LP in Kaduna, Kano, Niger, and Jigawa within six months. Yet, those he trusted turned against him. It affected his business, but we, his partners always knew his worth,” Yahaya said.

For Kaduna South, the direction is clear: a return to national or mainstream politics is desirable and necessary. The APC’s commitment to addressing the unique challenges faced by the region, coupled with its focus on economic development and social cohesion, positions it as the party of choice for many voters.

The promise of one million votes from Auta is not just a numerical goal; it symbolizes a collective desire for change and progress that resonates deeply with the electorate.

As the APC consolidates its position ahead of the 2027 elections, it is essential for the party to continue engaging with the grassroots and addressing the concerns of the people. The success of Auta’s defection and the subsequent mobilization of support will depend on the APC’s ability to translate its inclusive policies into tangible benefits for the citizens of Kaduna South.

This means prioritizing infrastructure development, job creation, and social services that uplift the most vulnerable members of society.

Moreover, the APC must remain vigilant in its efforts to counter any narratives that undermine its commitment to inclusivity.

The political landscape is often fraught with misinformation and divisive rhetoric, and the party must proactively communicate its achievements and vision for the future.

By fostering open dialogue and collaboration with various stakeholders, the APC can build a robust coalition that transcends ethnic and religious boundaries.

In conclusion, the defection of Michael Auta to the APC marks a pivotal moment in Kaduna’s political journey as the party consolidates its position ahead of the 2027 elections.

With a renewed focus on inclusivity, integration, and a non-discriminatory approach, the APC is poised to capture the hearts and minds of voters in Kaduna South. Auta’s promise of one million votes is a clarion call for unity and progress, signalling a shift towards a more cohesive and prosperous future for the region.

As the APC continues to build on this momentum, it must remain committed to its core values and the aspirations of the people it serves, ensuring that the gains made are sustained in the years to come.

As Nigeria grapples with security challenges, the northern region appears to be the worst still for many reasons.
