  • Credible poll best APC can give Nigerians in 2019 – Secondus

The National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party ( PDP ), Prince Uche Secondus, has said that the best that the All Progressives Congress ( APC ) can give to Nigerians in 2019 is to conduct one-man one-vote general elections.

Secondus said this when he received the German Ambassador to Nigeria, Dr Bernhard Schlagheck, who paid a courtesy call on the party’s national leadership on Tuesday in Abuja.

Secondus attributed lack of free and fair elections as one of the major causes of crisis in Africa.

“When citizens are deprived of their right to vote that will generate crisis that might be difficult to control.

“Nigeria is an important country in the continent of Africa.

“The best we can give to our people is election that will be transparent, election that will be credible, election that both local and international community will welcome.

“So, we urge the governing APC that the best they can give this country is to offer one  man, one vote.

Secondus said that Ekiti governorship election scheduled for July would be a test for the APC administration.

Secondus urged the international community to prevail on the APC administration to ensure free and fair elections.

Secondus, however, said that the PDP had embarked on two major platforms; namely generation next and rescue mission, to protect the party ahead of 2019 general elections.

He explained that generation next was to ensuring mentoring for the youths, while the rescue mission aimed at salvaging the country.

Speaking earlier, Schlagheck, said he was in PDP as part of a tour of all political parties in Nigeria ahead of the 2019 polls.

The ambassador added that his report would be sent to his country, Germany.

  • APC, INEC planning to rig Ekiti poll – PDP

The leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Tuesday alleged plans by the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to rig the Ekiti State governorship election slated for July.

The National Chairman of the PDP, Prince Uche Secondus, made the allegation when the German Ambassador to Nigeria, Dr. Bernhard Schlagheck, paid a courtesy call on the party’s leadership at its Abuja secretariat.

The PDP chairman told the envoy that instead of fulfilling its campaign promises to Nigerians, the APC administration has plunged the country into several crises.

Secondus, who called on the international community to prevail on the government to ensure free and fair election in Ekiti.

He said the election would be the first test for the administration.

According to him, available information indicated that the APC and the INEC have perfected plans rig the election.

Secondus observed that election rigging and vote manipulation have been the major cause of leadership crisis in Africa, adding that “when citizens are deprived of their right to vote, it generates crisis that would be difficult to control.”

He said: “‎Nigeria is an important country in the continent of Africa. The best we can give to our people is election that will be transparent, election that will be credible, election that all; both local and international will welcome.

“So we urge the governing APC that the best they can give this country is to offer one man, one vote. We did that during the electoral campaign in 2015 but they are not assuring this, which means that ‎there is a great fear in the land that the election is not going to be free and fair‎ despite all the promises made by INEC.”

  • Alleged looting: Secondus threatens to sue Mohammed

The National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Prince Uche Secondus, has threatened to take the Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, to court for including his name in the alleged list of looters released by the minister on Friday.

The minister had alleged that Secondus collected N200 million from the immediate past National Security Adviser, Col. Sambo Dasuki (retd), who is still being detained by the government.

In a statement issued by his media adviser, Ike Abonyi, the PDP chairman said Mohammed should be ready to establish his allegations in court.

The statement reads: “The attention of the National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP),  Prince Uche Secondus, has been drawn to a press conference addressed by the Minister of Information, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, on Friday claiming that the National Chairman collected N200m from the purse of the National Security Adviser (NSA).

“Prince Secondus is challenging Mr. Mohammed to be ready to establish his allegations in court immediately.”

The PDP chairman said the agenda of the minister is to damage his reputation and distract him from serving his party but that he has failed woefully

“For the purposes of some gullible public Prince Secondus never collected any money from the NSA under any guise,” the statement added.

  • FG names Secondus, other treasury looters in PDP

The Federal Government on Friday listed names of some members of Peoples Democratic Party ( PDP ) who it alleged  looted the national treasury when the party was in power.

At a media briefing in Lagos, the Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed said the PDP National Chairman, Uche Secondus took N200 million from the office of then National Security Adviser ( NSA ) on Feb. 19, 2015.

The PDP had challenged the ruling party to name the looters under their watch if they actually know any.

“They said they did not loot the treasury. Well, I am sure they know that the treasury was looted dry under their watch.

“Yet they decided to grandstand. This shows the hollowness of their apology to Nigerians.

“Let us just give them a teaser with this list: PDP chairman Uche Secondus on the 19th of Feb 2015, took N200 million only from the office of then NSA”

The minister also alleged that PDP FInancial Secretary, Bolaji Anani on Oct 2014, took N600 million from the office of then NSA

He said that the then party’s National Publicity Secretary, Olisah Metuh, is on trial for collecting N1.4 billion from the office of then NSA

Mohammed said that Dr. Raymond Dokpesi, Chairman of DAAR Communications is also on trial, for allegedly taking N2.1 billion also from the office of the NSA

“Dudafa Waripamo-Owei, former SSA to President Goodluck Jonathan, is also on trial over N830 million kept in accounts of four different companies,” he said.

The minister said that a Federal High Court recently ruled that the former President Jonathan’s cousin Robert Azibaola had a case to answer for collecting 40 million dollars from the office of then NSA

“This list is just a tip of the iceberg, and the PDP is aware of this.

“We did not make these cases up. Many of these cases are in court and the records are available.

“Some of the people on this list are seeking to plea bargain, and that is a fact,” he said

Mohammed continued: “We insist that Nigeria was looted blind under the watch of the PDP, and that the starting point in tendering an apology is for them to return the loot.

“It is like a robber admitting to stealing your car and apologizing, but then saying he will keep the car anyway. It doesn’t work that way.

“The PDP is a hypocrite, and that reminds me of what English writer William Hazlitt said: ‘The only vice that cannot be forgiven is hypocrisy. The repentance of a hypocrite is itself hypocrisy’.

“We will not stop talking about the massive looting by the PDP. They
brought Nigeria to this sorry pass.

“We are now looking around for loans to build infrastructure, and they ask us not to talk about it. we will talk about it”.

Speaking on whether the position of government was prejudice since they had not been convicted by court, the minister said they were dared by the party  to give the names.

He added that they had enough evidence to prove the allegations against them.

  • We made mistakes in the past – PDP

The leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Monday admitted making mistakes during its 16 years stay in power and pleaded with Nigerians to forgive the party.

The party rued the culture of impunity and imposition of candidates, among other ills while in power, saying its leaders and stakeholders have turned a new leaf.

The party’s National Chairman, Prince Uche Secondus, made the plea in Abuja at a public event, with the theme: “Nation Building, Resetting the Agenda,” held at the Congress Hall of the Transcorp Hilton Hotel.

Secondus said the party has learnt from its past mistakes, adding that regardless of its failings, the PDP has garnered the requisite experience in governance and ready to correct its mistakes.

Secondus said: “I am the very first to admit that our party made many mistakes. Consequently, we were roundly sanctioned by Nigerians occasioning our loss at the polls in 2015.

“Let me seize this opportunity to apologize to Nigerians unequivocally for the several shortcomings of our party in the near and far past. It was all part of an evolution process without which there can be no maturity.

“The PDP has embarked on a rescue mission and together we will salvage this nation back from the grip of the incompetent All Progressives Congress (APC).”

Lamenting that the country and its people have become more divided than ever before under the present administration, the PDP chairman said Nigeria needs reconstruction to realise its immense potentials.

“Not even during the fratricidal civil war has this country been so divided along ethnic and religious fault lines. When a country is in such precarious situation, nation building becomes absolutely inevitable.

“Soon after independence in 1960, our forefathers set out to build a nation worthy to be proud of. But early internal contradictions engineered by tribe and religion truncated it, using the military.

“For over 30 years, the military in league with some politicians, led this country until 1999 when they were pressured to return to the barracks through combined democratic efforts from both within and outside the country.

“For the first 16 years of this milestone political transition, legitimate power rested in the domain of the PDP, a party baked in the nation’s oven of democratic struggle. Its founding fathers set out very lofty dreams for the nation’s economic, social and political emancipation and development.

“Within those 16 years, the party, which I now have the privilege of leading, was able to lay the foundation blocks of our nascent democracy by setting up and nurturing vital democratic institutions that will ensure its survival.

“Ultimately realising the critical importance of credible elections in the life of any democracy, the PDP government embarked on massive electoral reforms that ensured the conduct of free, fair and credible elections and saw a ruling party lose an election and successfully transited power to the opposition.

“This was the first of such in the democratic life of this country and an example for the entire continent. Even though we are sad about our loss, we as a party are immensely proud of what we consider our most significant achievement of willingly transferring power to opposition when the time came, thus giving a lie to all predictions that Nigeria would break in 2015. Let me alert the current ruling party, that no less is expected from them.”

He lamented that in less than three years that the party lost power, all the gains recorded in the 16 years of PDP administration have been eroded as a result of lack of understanding of the intricacies of governing a complex state like Nigeria.

  • 2019: PDP announces ‘generation next’ plan

National Chairman, Peoples Democratic Party ( PDP ), Mr Uche Secondus, on Wednesday said the party was coming up with “Generation Next” programme for repositioning youths to take over leadership in 2019.

Secondus made the disclosure at the opening of PDP Youth Leaders meeting in Abuja.

He said that the programme was designed to prepare the youth to take over political leadership in the country.

According to him, with the programme, age barrier will be removed and a 25-year old that is popular and intelligent can be voted into power as governor.

Secondus urged the youths to mobilise young people in their communities irrespective of party affiliation to rescue the country in 2019.

He also charged the youths to rise and defend marginal unity and democracy in the country.

According to him, any nation whose youths are not participating in the development process is heading for doom.

The chairman recalled that at 32, Gen. Yakubu Gowon became Head of State and that with youthful energy, presided and piloted over the affairs of Nigeria.

He said that Gowon succeeded in keeping Nigeria as a united entity along with other military governors who were also youths.

“Unless you come out and volunteer to make that sacrifice, you will not be noticed and the country will be missing you.

“Today is the day to go into memory lane, make firm declaration and stand by it; the country needs the youth and the party is ready to allow you participate,” he said.

Secondus said that Nigeria had never been polarized as being witnessed currently, adding that unless the youth rose to rescue the nation, there would be nothing left for the next generation.

He said that the rebranded PDP was practicing internal democracy and assured that henceforth, they would be no imposition of candidates in the party.

He revealed that there was a new reward system in PDP and that only those who delivered their polling units for the party at elections would get appointment.

Earlier, the National Youth Leader of the party, Mr Sunday Ude-Okoye, had said that the meeting was to avail youths the opportunity to deliberate on strategies to take over power in 2019.

He said that youths in the country were angry as majority of them had no jobs, yet they were being displaced and losing their lives and property to violence.

Ude-Okoye said the youths wished to return home to a healthy living, stating that democracy must be allowed to run smoothly.

  • We’ll stop killings, poverty in 2019 – PDP

We’ll stop killings, poverty in 2019 – PDP

The National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Prince Uche Secondus, said on Wednesday his party would stop killings, poverty and hunger in the country if it wins the 2019 presidential election.

Secondus, who led members of his National Working Committee (NWC), to witness a mega rally to mark the 6th anniversary of Bayelsa State Governor, Seriake Dickson’s administration, said the brooms of the All Progressives Party (APC) brought killings and vengeance to the country,

The party chairman spoke at the Ox-Bow Lake Pavilion, Yenagoa, where party faithful and thousands of women, youths and elders in outfits with touch of red in the spirits of the Valentine, gathered to celebrate Dickson.

Former governors, former ministers, state chairmen of PDP led by Obong Paul Ekpo of Akwa Ibom State, members of the Bayelsa State House of Assembly led by their Speaker, Kombowei Benson, National Assembly members and traditional rulers were in attendance to honour Dickson and his Deputy, Rear Admiral John Jonah (retd).

Scores of APC stalwarts and their supporters defected to the PDP at the event.

Secondus, who had earlier inaugurated the pavilion, also reaffirmed his doubts over the readiness of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to conduct a free and fair election in 2019.

Describing INEC as the parastatal of the APC, Secondus, however, warned that any attempts to manipulate the elections in 2019 would be resisted by the people.

He said: “Starting from Bayelsa today, we are waiting for very prominent stakeholders of our nation to come over to the party that will rescue our nation from this challenge of difficulty, hunger, killings and poverty.

“Our country witnessed the era of brooms from 2015. This broom has brought us evil, vengeance, hunger, poverty, killings in our land. We will continue to receive these brooms and throw them into the ocean. Never again shall our people witnessed killings and poverty.

“We will rebrand, reposition our party and regain the lost ground. Bayelsa has laid the foundation for our teeming supporters. Just two days ago, we were at Abia State and we visited Abia. The governors of PDP are performing.

“They are the good example of nation-building. I believe that all the 11 governors of PDP are the best the country has today. And because they have performed, the entire nation can see that this is the party that can rescue this country.”

  • PDP chair bemoans fate of Nigerians under APC

PDP chair bemoans fate of Nigerians under APC

The National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party ( PDP ), Prince Uche Secondus has said that Nigerians never bargained for the hardship they are currently going through with the All Progressives Congress (APC) administration.

Accusing the administration of practicing “nuclear nepotism” in the running of the government, the party chair said that all hands must be on deck to save the country from what he described as a “monumental disaster” that the administration has become.

A statement on Wednesday by Ike Abonyi, media adviser to the party’s chairman, said this was part of the conclusions reached at a meeting the leadership of the PDP had with members of the party’s National Assembly caucus on Tuesday.

Secondus was quoted to describe the legislature as the centre of national politics, adding that only the PDP could save the country from implosion in the months ahead.

Lamenting the rate at which people are being killed on a daily basis, the party chair was also quoted to have criticised the lop-sided appointments in critical sectors at the federal level.

“Nuclear nepotism is in vogue, you have to come from Daura to be appointed into a federal position”

“This is the time for all to stand up to save this country and all eyes are on the PDP to lead the way. I am ready and determined, even to be arrested for us to regain our liberty in this land.

“What we have ruling Nigeria today at the Villa is a broken party and a broken government. Spiritually, the APC has already left the villa, what we must fine tune is the physical accomplishment”, Secondus was quoted as saying.

The party chairman was said to have charged PDP members at the National Assembly to brace up to the challenges ahead, stressing that  they are the leaders of the party at the grassroots.

He was also quoted to have assured them that the PDP leadership under his watch determined to take the appropriate and right the decisions while consolidating the party at the grassroots.
