    Uche Secondus, the “Total Chairman”

     Profile

Prince Uche Secondus, who emerged as the new national Chairman of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) from a now controversial convention held yesterday in Abuja, is not a newcomer to the corridors of party leadership.

The businessman turned politician has spent many years playing party politics right from his days as the Youth Leader of the Rivers State chapter of the defunct National Party of Nigeria (NPN), during the Second Republic.

Born and raised in Andoni, Rivers State, young Secondus attended elementary and secondary schools in Rivers State before leaving the shores of the country for the United Kingdom where he attended the London Chambers of Commerce Institute and obtained a certificate in Commerce. On his return to the country, he delved into business and soon made a name in the politics of his home state.

He continued in politics even after the collapse of the Second Republic in 1983, joining several other politicians to form various political organizations while waiting for the then military government to lift the lid off politics. And when the Third Republic berthed, he promptly joined the National Republican Convention (NRC) and soon emerged as its Publicity Secretary in Rivers State.

His political profile rose tremendously during the Third Republic as he was seen as one of the driving forces of the NRC in the state. As the mouthpiece of the ruling party in the state, he left no one in doubt of his ability to not only defend the NRC and the then Governor of the state, Rufus Ada-George. It was during this era that Secondus confirmed his place as an astute player of party politics.

Little surprise that when democracy returned to the country in 1998, he returned with it as the Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state. He went on to serve as a two-term chairman of the PDP before leaving the stage to move on to higher party assignments at the national level. But that was not until he earned the nickname “Total Chairman”.

Explaining how Secondus came about the moniker, a chieftain of the party in Rivers recalled how the Andoni-born politician was firmly in control of the party while he held sway as the helmsman in the state. “He was totally in charge. He gave no room for dissidents to rock the boat of his leadership. He was always ahead of those who plotted to disrupt his reign. He was on ground in all the real sense of it,” our source said.

On how Secondus was able to achieve the feat that made him the “Total Chairman”, our source added that as a party leader, Secondus, though he will not tolerate dissidents, was a team player. “He does not give room for dissidents to operate but if you are ready to work with him, he is a team player. With Secondus in charge, the party secretariat was always a beehive of activities. He always had something for all his team members to do. He never worked alone,” he added.

From being the “Total Chairman” of the ruling party in Rivers, Secondus, who at the time was heading a nationally renowned group within the PDP known as the G84, moved to the national stage when he emerged as the South-South Coordinator for the PDP National Campaign Council that organized the campaigns for the party during that year’s general elections in 2007.

As campaign co-ordinator, he left no one in doubt of his organizational ability. Thus, in 2008, at the Peoples Democratic Party Convention, he was elected into the position of National Organizing Secretary of the PDP. He was in that office until 2012. In 2013, he emerged as the Deputy National Chairman of the ruling PDP at the national convention of the party.

With fate still favouring the “Total Chairman”, he was soon thrust forward to take the position of acting National Chairman of the PDP in 2015 following the unexpected defeat of the party at the last presidential election and the resultant resignation of the then party chairman, Alhaji Adamu Muazu. Returning as the “Total Chairman” at a time the party was enmeshed in unending crisis,  Secondus was saddled with the task of uniting the troubled PDP and repositioning it to move forward.

But he was neither to stay long on the seat nor be elected as substantive as the usual leadership tussle for which his party had become known, soon swept him away from the position. While away from the national secretariat of the party, Secondus did not in any way lost relevance in politicking. He became one of the closest allies of Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, his political associate of many years.

Perhaps it was that alliance that paid off as Wike, acting in tandem with other PDP governors, yesterday ensured the return of the Andoni Prince to the national secretariat of the PDP, this time as substantive national Chairman, elected at the national convention of the troubled opposition party, held at the Eagle Square, Abuja. Though he emerged amidst controversies and strong fear that the PDP may be returning to its troubled days, the “Total Chairman”, as he is still fondly called, says he is coming to give PDP total peace.

That is, however, left to be seen.

Wike steals the show at PDP convention with unity list

The Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, was the cynosure of all eyes at the Eagle Square, Abuja, venue of the national convention of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

The governor was the rallying point at the convention with a predetermined list of candidates for all the 21 positions in the party’s national executive committee.

Dubbed the “unity list,” the one-page document, which was widely circulated at the convention venue long before voting commenced, contained the names of the favoured candidates for each position.

Going by the list, Prince Uche Secondus (Rivers) was listed as the choice for national chairman while Elder Yemi Akinwonmi (Ogun) was penciled down as his deputy (South).

A former senator, Gamawa Babawo Garba (Bauchi) was anointed as deputy national chairman (North).

Another former senator, Umar Tsauri (Katsina) was listed as preferred candidate for the National Secretary.

One Agbo Emmanuel (Benue) was slated for the position of Deputy National Secretary.

Aribisala Adewale (Ekiti) was chosen as National Treasurer, while one Alhaji Wada Masu (Kano) was penned down as his deputy.

For Financial Secretary, Abdullahi Husseini Maibasara (Niger) was the choice with Irona Alphonsus Gerald (Imo) as his deputy.

A candidate from Abia, Col. Austin Akobundu (retd) was the favourite for National Organising Secretary, while Hasan Yakubu (Nasarawa) was tagged as his deputy.

The position of National Publicity Secretary was to go to Mr. Kola Ologbondiyan (Kogi) while Diran Odeyemi (Osun) was to be voted his deputy.

For the position of National Legal Adviser, Emmanuel Enoidem (Akwa Ibom) was the unanimous choice with Ahmed Bello Liman (Sokoto) listed as deputy.

The committee chairman, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu, presented certificates to the aspirants at the party’s National secretariat in Abuja.

PDP chair: Edo delegates dump Dokpesi for Secondus

Edo State delegates for the national convention of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have been asked to vote for Prince Uche Secondus and not Chief Raymond Dokpesi as National Chairman of the party.

However, some delegates from Edo North Senatorial district have reportedly kicked against the decision since Dokpesi hails from the state.

But the delegates are yet to arrive at a consensus at the time of filing this report.

It was learnt that the state leadership of the party led by Chief Dan Orbih was toeing the line of the South South region to support Secondus.

At a meeting with the party delegates in Benin City, Dokpesi informed them that he got the blessing of party leaders in the state before contesting for the position of the national chairman of the party.

The aspirant said he didn’t reach out to some members of the party in the state because he assumed that having secured the blessing of leaders of party, he has the blessing and endorsement of all party faithful in the state.

Dokpesi said: “As well to the consultation, we consulted with Chief Anenih and our governorship candidate, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu. I consulted the state chairman here also. I also consulted Chief Tomi Ikimi, Alhaji Isa Braima, Chief Ozeto and all of the elders.

“And because it is a delegate election, I took off time to even notify my senatorial chairmen. I requested them to please also get involved. So, I mentioned this to them and I had their blessings to go ahead. So for all those who said I did not knock at their doorsteps to inform them, accept my unreserved apology, it was not just possible to go round.”

PDP chair: Lagos chapter endorses Bode George

The Lagos State Chapter of the PDP on Sunday night endorsed Chief Olabode George as their preferred candidate for the National Chairmanship position during the forthcoming  December 9 National Convention of the party.

Dr Moshood Salvador, the State Chairman of PDP, gave the certification at a feedback meeting between George and members of the party, held at the party’s secretariat in GRA, Ikeja.

Reports say that George had been on campaign in the Southern states of the country to seek support for votes ahead of the National Convention.

There are about eight aspirants jostling for the National chairmanship seat of the party from the south.

They include: the former Governor of Ogun State, Chief Gbenga Daniel, former Minister of Education, Prof. Tunde Adeniran.

Others are: the former Minister of Youth Development, Prof. Taoheed Adedoja and former Lagos State PDP governorship candidate, Mr Jimi Agbaje, Prince Uche Secondus, a former acting National Chairman of PDP, and Chief Raymond Dokpesi.

Salvador said: “ On behalf of Lagos PDP, we must vote for Chief Bode George come December 9;  the South west is the rightful region to have the chairman of our great party.

“In the last dispensation, Ekiti produced the Vice- Chairman while Osun and Oyo states took the highest office. It is only Lagos that is left and what we want is the chairman.

“The South-east and the South-south have produced a chairman before that is why it is our turn to have the chairman of PDP,’’ he said.

Earlier, George assured members that if given the opportunity to serve, he would re-establish the culture and tradition put in place by the founding fathers of  the PDP.

“If I am given the opportunity, I will not be new to the management of this party because the party’s constitution is not going to be new to me; I know its provisions as I know the back of my hand.

“We grew up with the party and the founding fathers handed over the culture of the party to us and that is what we would re-establish.

“Just check out, from the end of our convention to the national election is a very short time, it is not a time where you can do experimentation, it is not a time you can bring a green horn to be the chairman of the party.

“If you are desirous that you want to win that election, on that day before you cast your votes search your consciences and think very carefully.

“Secondly, it is not a matter of life and death, if I don’t believe that I have anything to offer, I will not be here.

“I will not compromise on things that are not right and are not in the constitution.

“ I will do things the way they should be done and everybody will be happy. That was how our founding fathers were moving the party forward ,’’ George said.

  • PDP convention will be hitch-free – Wike

PDP convention will be hitch-free – Wike

Gov. Nyesom Wike of Rivers says the Peoples Democratic Party ( PDP ) leadership will not accept anything likely to disrupt its Saturday’s National Convention.

Wike gave the assurance when he received a national chairmanship aspirant of the party, Chief Raymond Dokpesi, at Government House, Port Harcourt, on Sunday.

Wike said that whatever anybody might be saying, the convention would be fair and hitch-free.

The governor pledged to support the party to provide a level playing ground at the convention.

“If you believe and love this party, there is nothing you cannot do, everybody can make sacrifice for this party except you don’t believe in this party.

“What I am saying is that whoever emerges we should come out as members of the same party to support him.”

Wike also condemned a statement credited to a former state governor in which stakeholders of PDP in the north micro zoned the party chairmanship position to the South West.

He described the statement as a slap on the South South, saying it was wrong for anybody not from the region to do micro-zoning against the decision of the party.

“The chairmanship was zoned to the south and presidency to the north. You cannot in your own place micro zone our own position.

“We cannot seat here and micro zone the presidency. It is not possible. It is what they tell us to do that we will do.

“PDP is not in power, it is in opposition. We need a Chairman that will drive the party to make PDP to win election,” Wike said.

He commended the peaceful campaigns by Dokpesi and his campaigning round the country to seek delegates’ support.

“What you are doing has popularised the party. This is the first time when PDP Chairman is being elected and the aspirants are going from one state to the other.

“The main fact that you are doing that is a mobilisation for the party.”

Earlier, Dokpesi said he was in the state to solicit for the blessing and support of the governor and the state delegates on his ambition.

He said as an opposition party, it was important for the PDP to allow its best materials to emerge as Chairman and presidential candidates.

Dokpesi commended the roles and support of Gov. Wike and government of Rivers towards the development of PDP and success of its forthcoming convention.

Meeting with PDP Rivers State Executive members and delegates at the party secretariat, Dokpesi said though there were eight aspirants vying for the chairmanship, including Prince Uche Secondus, his own personality had more capacity to re-brand PDP.

The Chairman of PDP Rivers, Felix Obuah, also condemned the statement on micro zoning of chairmanship position to the South West.

Obuah said that the state chapter of the party would continue to support anything that would help it to regain the mandate in 2019.

PDP chairman aspirants to sign peace accord – Dokpesi

Chief Raymond Dokpesi, the one of the Peoples Democratic Party ( PDP ) National Chairmanship aspirants, has said that all the eight chairmanship aspirants would sign a peace accord as part of their commitment toward successful convention.

Dokpesi, the founder of Daar Communications, disclosed this in an interview with newsmen after the PDP Governors Forum met with all aspirants in Enugu, which ended at early hour of Monday.

Dokpesi disclosed that all the aspirants had agreed to sign the peace accord at the party’s national secretariat, Wadata Plaza, Abuja, by 4 p.m.

He described the move as part of efforts by the aspirants to ensure that the party comes out of the convention  stronger and united.

“With that accord being signed we are going to look forward to a very peaceful and harmonious convention.”

Asked if the issue of zoning came up at the meeting of the forum with the aspirants, Dokpesi said the party was explicit enough on the issue of zoning.

He said that while the party’s presidential ticket was zoned to the North, the position of chairman’s was zone to the South, without specific reference to  states or geopolitical region.

He said that the candidates had agreed to work together

“After the zoning principle, all the aspirants have agreed to work together to come up with a common position. Anybody can contest.

“If the party in its wisdom and the aspirants agreed within themselves and notify the party early enough that would be fine.”

Also asked if the issue of a consensus  candidate was deliberated at the meeting Dokpesi said “no, but that did not mean there were no discussion among the aspirants.

“Today on the way forward, a few of the aspirants met in the morning and in the afternoon and discussed which solution can be adopted.”

Dokpesi added that following the meeting  he would go ahead with his campaign and consultation to fulfill his ambition.

The Governor of Ekiti and Chairman of the Forum, Mr Ayodele Fayose, said that the party national convention, schedule for Dec. 9, would be a world class  that other political parties would emulate.

Fayose said that the party had work hard and it has all it takes to win the Saturday Anambra Governorship election.

“We are using this opportunity to demand that the election should be credible. It should not only be credible but seen to be credible.

“We want to believe that Nigeria is of age to organise election that is acceptable at home and internationally, on Nov. 18 in Anambra,” Fayose added

In attendance were the Chairman of the party’s National Caretaker Committee, Sen. Ahmed Makarfi, all the PDP governors, except Ebonyi represented by his deputy.

Other aspirants at the meeting were Chief Bode George, Gbenga Daniel, Prince Uche Secondus, Prof. Tunde Adeniran, Jimi Agbaje, Taoheed Adedoja and Rashid Ladoja.

Also in attendance were Ike Ekweremadu, the Deputy President of the Senate; Gabriel Susuwan, former Benue Governor, Adolphus Nwabara and Sule Lamido.

  • Power brokers tip Secondus, Adeniran for PDP chair

Power brokers tip Secondus, Adeniran for PDP chair

Key power brokers in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) may have scaled the contest for the party’s national chairman down to a former Deputy National Chairman Prince Uche Secondus and a former Education Minister Prof. Tunde Adeniran.

Investigation by our correspondent revealed that the power brokers may have arrived at the decision for strategic political reasons, particularly the influence and contributions of the backers of the two contestants to the party.

The attraction to the two contestants lies in the general perception that they appear “supple and flexible” and that they are likely to be adaptable to testy situations.

Secondus enjoys the backing of Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike. He also hails from the state, while Adeniran has the support of a sizable number of elders of the party, particularly from the North.

Investigation further revealed that Wike has been rallying support for Secondus among his colleague governors in the South-South and the South East which are expected to produce the highest number of delegates for the December 9 national convention.

A former Information Minister Prof Jerry Gana, is the arrow head of contact and Mobilisation outreach for Adeniran in the North, particularly in Gombe and Taraba States which are under the control of the PDP.

However, if Wike eventually yields to pressure being mounted on him by some interest groups to allow the position go to the South West, then the Adeniran candidacy may have a smooth sail.

The PDP is fragmented in many of the states in the South West, a situation that may have compounded issues for Adeniran who requires enough delegate votes from the zone.

Also at issue is the opposition to the aspiration of the former Education Minister by Ekiti State Governor. Ayo Fayose. Fayose’s calculation is that if Adeniran emerges chairman, it would have blocked his chance of picking the vice presidential ticket of the party in the 2019 election. Ademniran hails from Ekiti.

Fayose a few weeks ago declared his interest to run for president even when the party leadership had zoned the ticket to the North.

Many interpreted his declaration to run for president as a veiled attempt to bargain for the vice presidential ticket, which may have been quietly zoned to the South East.

The only prominent position zoned to the South East zone in the coming convention is that of the National Organising Secretray, which cannot stop the zone from picking the vice presidential ticket.

The fate of a former Deputy National Chairman (South West), Chief Olabode George who is the most experienced of all the chairmanship aspirants, having served at the national secretariat for 10 unbroken years, is hanging in the balance.

Although George is favoured by a large number of radical elements in the party across the geopolitical zones, the major power brokers however consider him too hot to handle.

Tough and highly independent minded, the former navy officer and ex-military governor, George does not trike the right chord among the conservative elements and key power brokers in the party.

Our correspondent gathered that one of the major reasons they are opposed to his emergence as chairman is his track record of strict adherence to established rules, which may make it difficult for anyone to exert undue influence on him.

Prof Taoheed Adedoja who is also in the race is seen not to have the required experience in party administration.

Mr. Jimi Agbaje who was favoured for the position of chairman in the party’s botched 2016 convention appeared to have lost steam, as his major backers in the South East and South South have turned their back on him. His campaign has remained tepid.

Former Ogun State Governor, Otunba Gbenga Daniel may also not go far. His ongoing trial by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is being considered a baggage by key stakeholders.

In the same boat with Daniel is Chief Raymond Dokpesi who is also facing trial over his alleged involvement in the $2.1 billion arms purchase scandal with former National Security Adviser Sambo Dasuki.

The perception within party circles is that the government of the day might plant distractions in the way of Daniel and Dokpesi at the most critical state, particularly if any of the two should emerge chairman.

A former Governor of Oyo State, Alhaji Rashidi Ladoja who is also in the race is the least considered appropriate for the job. Having rejoined the PDP from the Accord only last month, his candidacy may prove a hard sell.

Senate caucus grills Dokpesi, Adeniran, others for PDP chair

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) caucus in the Senate Monday night met with six aspirants to the position of the party’s National Chairman.

The meeting, which was still holding at the Asokoro private residence of the Senate Minority Leader, Godswill Akpabio was still in progress at the time of filing this report.

The aspirants that appeared before the senators included Chief Olabode George, Chief Raymond Dokpesi, Prof. Tunde Adeniran, Prince Uche Secondus, Prof Taoheed Adedoja and Mr Jimi Agbaje.

The purpose of the meeting, which was being chaired by Akpabio was to interact with the aspirants, with the view to determining the suitability of each of the aspirants for the position of chairman.

Secondus and Agbaje who are in their 50s, are the youngest of the aspirants and are considered late entrants into the race.

George and Adeniran are in their 70s while Dokpesi and Adedoja are in their mid-60s.

The aspirants are billed to also meet with the National Chairman of the PDP, Senator Ahmed Makarfi shortly before today’s National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting at the party’s Abuja secretariat.

The NEC will be considering approval for the December 9 date and venue for the convention.

  • Former PDP leader worried over 2019 elections dates

Former PDP leader worried over 2019 elections dates

Former National Deputy Chairman of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Mr Uche Secondus, said fixing dates for 2019 general elections now was an “unnecessary haste’’ by Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The commission had on Wednesday announced Feb. 16, 2019 for Presidential and National Assembly elections and March 2, 2019, for Governorship, State Assembly and Federal Capital Territory Area Councils polls.

An INEC National Commissioner, Mr Solomon Soyebi, who announced the dates in Abuja, said it was part of efforts by the commission to standardise and ensure certainty of timetable for general elections in the country.

Soyebi gave instances of countries, including US, Ghana, Mexico, Sweden, Norway and Switzerland where dates for general elections were standard and known calendars.

Secondus in a statement on Friday in Abuja said that it was shocking for INEC to have released timetable for 2019 general elections when it had more pressing issues to attend to.

He alleged that INEC announced the dates without consultation with critical stakeholders like political parties and civil society groups whose inputs were always sought before final decisions were taken.

He described the action as part of the INEC determination to carry out designed agenda of the ruling party on the elections.

Secondus called for the dissolution of INEC as presently constituted, “with men and women of integrity as a measure to save the country’s democracy’’.

He said that the commission was currently operating without Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) in 33 states.

“It is curious that an electoral commission that is yet to be properly constituted has before it many unfinished matters, including voter education and enlightenment.

“As we speak, Anambra gubernatorial election is due later this year and the state has no REC to carry out all the needful as enshrined in the Constitution before the election.

“Since last year, Nigeria’s Senate had raised alarm over the implication of non-constitution of INEC but while the National Commissioners’ positions are filled, over 30 seats of RECs remain vacant,’’ Secondus said.

He, however, acknowledged that statutorily, the President had the responsibility to appoint the RECs subject to the confirmation of the Senate in line with Section 153 of the 1999 Constitution as amended. (NAN)
