Heineken UEFA Champions League finale winners Emerge

Thirteen lucky Nigerian Heineken fans are now set to enjoy a once-in-a-lifetime experience as this year’s UEFA Champions League draws to a close.

The lucky Heineken fans who were amongst the over 3000 UEFA football fans that took part in the raffle draws across Nigeria have won an all-expense paid trip to Heineken’s world-famous Ibiza Finale, where fans converge from all over the world to watch the UEFA Champions League final match.

They will also enjoy lavish beach parties on the exotic island of Ibiza, a lush tourist destination off the coast of Spain. Other winners of the raffle draw took home various premium quality consolation prizes.

For Daniel Ogar, an Abuja-based Arsenal fan, the dream trip will soothe the pain of seeing his team knocked out of the tournament.

He enthused, “I have never been part of any raffle draw event but, this evening, I linked up with my friends at this bar and as fate would have it, I am a winner! Stanley Mgbemere had similarly arrived the aptly named Abuja Dream Recreation Centre with hopes of watching Arsenal defy the odds, but he left with much more than he could ever have imagined.

“Although the match did not go the way of my darling team Arsenal, I am compensated with the fact that I will enjoy an all-expense paid trip to Europe, courtesy of Heineken.”

IzunnaNwobodo andEgbuche Pope also won at the same Abuja bar. In Enugu, OgbonnaIfeanyi’s life changing date with destiny was at Bush House Arena. “I have always enjoyed my Heineken beer, but had never previously been interested in any form of lottery or raffle draw. Even this evening, I was passive about the whole exercise, but a friend encouraged me to enter the draw.” The other winners from Enugu were Aramide Kehinde, OnyekachiColins and LowisNkemjika Ezema. They will be joined from Port Harcourt by OgieOmanoye, Raymond Iyala and Nkemka Eze, who all won their trips at Lesuka Bar.

Chinedu Chine won from Ibiza Bar in Festac Town, Lagos. Scarcely believing his luck, he pleaded, “Please if it’s dream, don’t wake me up”.

But for the other Lagos-based winner, it was not purely a matter of luck. Informed choice and dogged determination also played a part.

Bello Sharafa had read about the draws in the newspapers. “Although I always like to enjoy my match night in the bar, when I learnt that Heineken was coming to this particular place, I decided to come here.
“As an FC Barcelona fan, my reward is double portion because the result of the match went my way and at same time I won a ticket to travel to Europe!”

UEFA Champions League exit: Ambrose shocked

Glasgow Celtic defender Efe Ambrose was speechless when SL10 sought to know his reaction to his team’s failure to qualify for the UEFA Champions League group stage.

“I don’t know what to say, I’m so shocked to say a word, please let’s talk about something else,” he told SL10.

After drawing 1-1 away in Slovenia, Celtic couldn’t hang on to their first leg advantage and conceded in the second half to crash out 2-1 on aggregate to Slovenia’s NK Maribor.

Ambrose was a 75th minute substitute in the first leg but played the entire duration of the return leg and twice kept his team alive with two last ditch tackles before they conceded.

However, he took time to welcome Ghana’s Mubarak Wakaso who joined Celtic on loan from Rubin Kazan, describing him as a quality pacy and crafty forward.

“It’s nice to have another pal from my continent after Wanyama’s departure to Southampton, but for Wakaso he isn’t one I will love to play against.

“I’m happy he came to us, I watched him during the 2013 Nations Cup in South Africa, and he is pacy, skillful and has qualities that will make us better as a team,” he added.

  • Barcelona coach offers hope to Elohor

Nigeria youngster at Barcelona B team  Godswill Elohor and his teammates’ chances of breaking into the main team at Barcelona have been given a boost by new manager Luis Enrique. The Coach who was a former Coach at Barcelona B team confirmed he’s keen to bring through more youngsters from the B squad. “They are some top quality players there. It goes without saying that we’ll have to give them a hand,” Enrique told the club’s website. “I love using young players with talent and they are top rate, they are quite a few with quality.” The Nigerian, who is predominantly a right full back, captained the Barcelona Juvenile team to victory in the UEFA youth league last season and was promoted to the B team at the start of the season. So far he has settled down to life in his new surroundings, turning out impressive performances in their pre-season games as they get set for the start of the Spanish Segunda season. Last season the Nigerian sparingly trained with the main team alongside some of his colleagues from the Juvenile team.

    • As Legia Warsaw lose appeal

Efe Ambrose’s Celtic will remain in the Champions League after Legia Warsaw lost their appeal to have their ban overturned on Thursday.

The Polish side had hoped UEFA’s appeals body would reinstate them after they were demoted to the Europa League for fielding an ineligible player during the second leg of their Champions League qualifying game against the Scottish champions.

But Legia co-owner Dariusz Mioduski has confirmed that the club will now take their case to the Court of Arbitration for Sport, tweeting: ‘Unfortunately for now football is not winning… We are going to CAS.’

Legia president Boguslaw Lesnodorski echoed Mioduski’s pledge to take the matter to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

He wrote on Twitter: ‘Negative decision, it’s hard even to comment, we are using the CAS (we plan to tomorrow) and otherwise we are focused only on the games.’

Legia believed Bartosz Bereszynski suspension had been served after he missed both legs of the previous qualifier against St Patrick’s Athletic as well as the first leg against Celtic, but their failure to register him for the game against St Patrick’s proved costly.

Mioduski released a statement through the club’s official website which stressed Legia’s determination to keep fighting for Champions League reinstatement.

  • UEFA Champions League: Ogbuke gets quarter-final target

Super Eagles and Schalke 04 forward Chinedu Obasi Ogbuke and his club team mates have been handed at least a quarter-final finish in the 2014/15 UEFA CL campaign and Germany Bundesliga top four finish.

Club director of sport Horst Heldt challenged the Nigerian star and his mates to ensure the team goes as far as reaching the quarter-finals of the competition this season, as well as ensuring they qualify for the competition again next season.

Heldt in a statement on Sport1.de believes only last season champions Bayern Munich are out of his side’s reach and as such has set his club’s sights very high for the 2014-15 campaign.

“Of course when you have qualified for the Champions League three times in a row, then you are not going to settle for finishing fifth or sixth.

“It’s going to be an interesting season and we want to get the most out of it. What that will be, I cannot say.

“We want to contend for the leading positions. We want to go further than the last 16 in the Champions League and we want to go further in the DFB-Pokal too,” Heldt stated.

Despite seeing league holders Bayern as the team to beat again this season, Heldt declared his side are not merely focusing on trying to get the better of Pep Guardiola’s side.

”We’re following our own goals. It’s a mistake always to compare yourselves with the others and orientate yourself around them. Many clubs are trying to send good teams into the season and it’s going to be exciting, even if Bayern are of course leading the way.

“They are the favourites, but we have a good team too which has improved, and we are ready for our tasks.

“We have kept our team intact and the younger player are now more mature. We’ve also got our long-term injured back,so we’ve not needed to spend money really,” Heldt added.

The Nigerian star and his German side finished in third place last season behind title favorites Bayern and local rivals Borussia Dortmund.

  • ENYEAMA’S LILLE TO FACE PLAY-OFFS

    ENYEAMA’S LILLE TO FACE PLAY-OFFS

SUPER EAGLES shot-stopper, Vincent Enyeama and Lille pals will have to face UEFA Champions League play-offs for the 2014/15 camapign after failing to catch up with second-placed Monaco in the Ligue 1 log no thanks to Friday’s 1-1 away to Bastia.

Reacting moments after the game, Lille coach René Girard felt his side lacked the necessary killer instinct as they came up short of the three points that would have guaranteed Champions League football.

“If I’ve any regrets it’s that we didn’t do what was necessary when we had three or four clear chances to pull two goals clear. We lacked that killer instinct. We conceded the equaliser and there were still five minutes to play. In football you have to take your chances when they come along. There are two matches to play with six points and we need two points more so we’ll hang in there. There’s still time to get the points we need.”

Meanwhile, his Bastia counterpart, Frédéric Hantz felt the Corsicans deserved to win. “I think we cause them problems in playing the first ball out from the back. When we were beaten in midfield we still managed to protect our goal. And when Wahbi scored I was convinced we were going to win. I think everyone was. I’m really angry because we’ve been, robbed isn’t the word, but we’ve been deprived of the victory we deserved.”

Enyeama’s Lille are currently placed third with 75 points from 36 matches as against second-placed AS Monaco with 75 points from 35 matches.

  • 19 cities bid for Euro 2020 games

19 cities bid for Euro 2020 games

13 of the 32 countries which originally expressed interest in hosting matches at Euro 2020 have dropped out while 19 have confirmed they are still in the race, UEFA said on Saturday.

England and Germany were the only two countries to put forward bids to stage the semifinals and final of the tournament which will be staged around the whole continent, European soccer’s governing body added in a statement.

In a radical departure from the traditional format for major tournaments, UEFA announced in 2011 that the Euro 2020, when the tournament celebrates its 60th anniversary, would be staged in 13 cities in 13 different countries.

SuperSport reports that 12 of those will each stage three group matches plus a match from either the round of 16 or knockout stage while the 13th will stage the two semifinals plus final. Each country can use one host city in what UEFA said at the time would be a one-off format.

Turkey, which had wanted to bid for the whole tournament before UEFA announced the new format, was among the countries to pull out of the race.

Under the bidding timetable, potential host nations were given until Friday to send detailed bid dossiers to UEFA.

UEFA said that the 19 countries who had sent dossiers were: Azerbaijan (Baku), Belarus (Minsk), Belgium (Brussels), Bulgaria (Sofia), Denmark (Copenhagen), England (London), Macedonia (Skopje), Germany (Munich), Hungary (Budapest), Israel (Jerusalem), Italy (Rome), Netherlands (Amsterdam), Ireland (Dublin), Romania (Bucharest), Russia (St Petersburg), Scotland (Glasgow), Spain (Bilbao), Sweden (Stockholm) and Wales (Cardiff).

Both England and Germany sent bids for a group stage package as well as the finals, UEFA said.

  • Heineken House set for Champions League

Heineken House set for Champions League

The anticipated resurgence or further slide of FC Chelsea, will be the main focus at the Heineken House Lagos when the first leg, semi final matches of the UEFA Champions matches get underway this evening and tomorrow in Spanish capital, Madrid.

The rivalry among the visitors and consumers at the Heineken House Lagos is so intense especially those whose loyalty are to top English Premiership clubs. It has also been a visible trend on match days, depending on affinity; many fans tend to support the opposing club against the ‘rival’ club.

Expectedly, when the in-form Atletico Madrid host Chelsea at the Estadio Vincent Calderon on Tuesday evening, the club with no significant fans in Nigeria will enjoy huge support from football fans at the Heineken House Lagos, urging them to go all out and eliminate the ‘last man standing’ of the English Premiership representative in this year’s competition!

However, FC Chelsea, with huge fan base in the country led by the guest of the week, Frank Edoho of the famous ‘Who Wants to be a Millionaire’ TV show, can still raise their voice to counter the ‘opposition’ all through the 90 minute of play. Their fans in the house had enjoyed similar fortune in the second round match, when the artiste, Alexander Adegbola, popularly known as 9ice, who is a staunch supporter of the club was part of the viewing experience when they demolished ambitious Galatasaray at the Stamford Bridge fortress. The last time both teams met was in 2012 European Super Cup match but against all expectations, the Spanish side won 4-1.

Aside the Estadio Vincent Calderon match, Heineken House Lagos fans will also be interested in the outcome of the other match at the Santiago Bernabue also in Madrid. When two former champions of the competition, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich play on Wednesday evening. It will be a repeat of the 2012 match when both teams met at the same stage of the competition with German side going through via penalty shootout after score line remained at 2-2 on aggregate.

Significantly, to many Heineken House football Faithfuls, the two clubs are on the threshold of making history. While formidable Real Madrid are on the chase for La Decima ( 10th European honour), Bayern Munich, led by Pep Guardiola, are aiming to be the first team to retain the UEFA Champions League trophy in the modern era of the competition.

The winners of the two matches over two legs will play in the final match of the competition on the 24th of next month at Stadium of Light in Lisbon, Portugal. Already, five lucky Nigerian fans will enjoy all-expenses paid trip courtesy of Heineken at the final match just like previous six seasons.

  • DOUBLE INJURY BOOST FOR CHELSEA

    DOUBLE INJURY BOOST FOR CHELSEA

THERE was good news for Chelsea on Monday as David Luiz and Samuel Eto’o returned to training ahead of tonight’s UEFA Champions League round of 16 second leg against Galatasaray.

David Luiz has been out of action since coming back from international duty with Brazil on 5 March.

Samuel Eto’o scored in Chelsea’s 4-0 victory over Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday 8 March. Neither player made the trip to Villa Park on Saturday. However, Ashley Cole has not returned to training yet and will be unavailable for the Galatasaray game. The England left-back picked up a lateral ligament injury prior to the Tottenham game, 10 days ago.

Chelsea drew the first leg 1-1 in Turkey three weeks ago and are one of three English teams left in European competition this week – along with Man Utd and Tottenham Hotspur who have first leg deficits to overcome.

The Blues are the only Premier League side to reach the quarter finals of the Champions League over the past two seasons and are the reigning Europa League holders.

  • ALAMPASU- My encounters with the President

ALAMPASU- My encounters with the President

Four-time African Footballer of the Year, Samuel Eto’o, first regaled this writer about the joy of meeting the rich and powerful on account of winning soccer laurels.

Eto’o was that starry-eyed boy on the Real Madrid’s squad that won the 199 UEFA’s Champions League and in tow with the likes of Zinedine Zidane, Roberto Carlos, and Raul Gonzalez, amongst others, he had a career-changing moment with Spain’s King Juan Carlos.

“I was with the main team (of Real Madrid) when they presented the European Champions League they won last season to King Juan Carlos of Spain and that was my happiest moment (because it serves as a motivation to win more trophies),” Eto’o said in an interview following his record appearance at the France’98 World Cup as the youngest player of the tournament.

Sixteen years on, Dele Alampasu, Nigeria’s Under-17 2013 FIFA World Cup-winning goalkeeper, has echoed similar sentiments like that of Eto’o following a rare audience with President Goodluck twice in a space of three months as he was a guest at the hallowed Aso Rock’s seat of the Nigerian government.

“In less than three months, I have been lucky to meet with President Goodluck Jonathan on two occasions and all has to do with football,” declared Alampasu who won the Best Goalkeeper Award at the 2013 UAE Under-17 World Cup.

“I was at the Aso Rock with the Golden Eaglets after we won the FIFA Under-17 World Cup in November but it was the last time I was there with the Super Eagles after we came third at the CHAN Championship in South Africa that I really had the opportunity to converse with President Jonathan.

“I was the second to the last on the queue, but before I got to the president, the MC had started shouting: ‘ Mr. President, this is the second time you are meeting this boy, Dele Alampasu.’ That really gave me the chance to talk with the president when I eventually met him for a handshake.

“What I told him? It wasn’t much, but I told him that ‘I will still come to Aso Rock many times’ because I believe this is just the beginning of my career. He replied that he would be there waiting for me.

“It would be nice to win trophies again with the national teams and that would be a good opportunity to be at the Aso Rock again,” added Alampasu who was a member of the Super Eagles Bronze-winning team at the last CHAN Championship in South Africa.

For those familiar with the Alampasu story, his is a classic rag-to-riches stuff because he was lifted from ‘ground zero. ‘He was overlooked initially by the Golden Eaglets’ selectors when he participated in the team’s screening exercise but was called up following the ineligibility of others through the Magnetic Resonance Imaging(MRI) test after the CAN Under-17 Championship in Morocco. But on account of his stellar performance between the sticks for the record-setting four titlists Golden Eaglets, Alampasu is now rubbing shoulders with the movers and shakers of the society.

“I’m happy because football has given me so much in a short time,” he said, amidst his famed kind-hearted laughter.” Here was I shaking hands with the FIFA’s President. And other big people when we won the Under-17 World Cup in Abu Dhabi.

“I met President Jonathan too and not forgetting the handshake from Governor Liyel Imoke of Cross River State; these are what give me the motivation to do more and I’m ready for the task ahead,” noted Alampasu as he once again takes The Nation’s Sport & Style through recent developments in his fledging career. Excerpts….

From Golden Eaglets to home-based Super Eagles

I was lucky to get into the Super Eagles’ Bolton White Apartment Camp in the company of my Golden Eaglets’ teammate, Taiwo Awoniyi. That sort of boosted my morale and one of the first officials we met was Coach Daniel Amokachi. He told us that we had to behave like men in order to be able to make the team for the CHAN Championship since we were no longer in the Golden Eaglets. His advice and that of several others really helped us in settling down into the camp. We were welcome into the camp very well.

    Between Amadi and Shorunmu

Going through the hands of the Golden Eaglets’ and Super Eagles’ goalkeepers’ coaches, Coach Emeka Amadi and Ike Shorunmu, has really helped me. With Amadi, I was taught the basics, which gave me a good background about what I met on ground at the Super Eagles. The training in the Super Eagles is tougher than that of the Golden Eaglets and it took me up to about one week before I was able to adjust. In training, I learned so much from my senior team-mates like Dan Akpeyi and Chigozie Agbim. In fact, Agbim was the number one choice because he was so hot in training but only God knew what happened to him at the CHAN Championship. Still, I learned so much from him. As one would expect, I gained so much from the goalkeepers in the Super Eagles because they have better experience and exposure than me. It was a great opportunity for me and I really paid attention to the coaches as well as the senior players. It is my desire to be in goal for the Super Eagles one day but I know it is not that easy. I’m ready to work hard for it and wait for my time. There are still many stages left for me; I hope to still play for both the Flying Eagles and the Olympic Under-23 teams. It’s a long process but with God on my side, everything is possible.

    Focus on professional career

I’m not worried about the fact that several of my team-mates have secured contracts with clubs abroad. I wish them the best with their clubs and I’m hopeful that one day and very soon, I would be able to move to Belgium too. Already, arrangements are being finalised for a move to Genk and hopefully I will be able to join them soon. It is great news, hearing about the movements of several of my teammates to clubs in Europe and this is a challenge for me too, but I’m leaving everything in the hands of God. I’m expected to sign a pre-contract agreement and later I will be given a formal contract when I’m 18 years old.

Coach Stephen Keshi as a father-figure

Of course, Coach Stephen Keshi is like a father to me and, in fact, to all the players because he’s a man full of wisdom who was always advising us.

    Making money

I always remember where I was coming from and that is why I have been able to use the little money I have made wisely. I helped my dad with his house and I’ve also done one or two things for myself. He’s never tired of giving us words of encouragement. He’s fond of telling us that; ‘if you carry yourself from down to the middle of your body, I’ll help you carry you to the top.’ He has the interest of everybody at heart and just imagine the opportunity he has given to me to be part of the Super Eagles to the CHAN Championship.

    My CHAN experience

Going to the CHAN Championship was a great opportunity for me to learn. I was not disappointed that I did not keep in any of the matches because it was not yet my time. I’ve given myself a target of at least two years and I know this will involve a lot of handwork in order for me to play for the senior team.

    My life and football

Football has given me so much joy and I don’t think my life would be complete without football. It is through football that I have been able to assist my family; it has also put food on my table, as such I can’t do without football. I still have plans for my education, but for now, I can’t do without football. I love swimming too but that is just to relax my body. What can make me cry? I would cry like a baby if anybody stops me from playing football. I didn’t come from a rich home but football has given me a lot of opportunities. I was a nobody this time last year but God has been good to me through football; and I’m so happy about it. I’m happy because my dad is now respected in his community due to my exploits with the Golden Eaglets. This has nothing to do with my power but the grace of God; I’m so, so happy about this great changes in the life of my family. I’m the only boy in the family and I have three sisters, so the challenge is for me to lift the name of the family. What could I have achieved without football? My dream now is to get a club so that I can concentrate on my career
