    CL: Brilliant Bayern demolish Barca

Bayern Munich took a massive step towards the Champions League final with an incredible 4-0 thrashing of Barcelona in the first leg of their last four clashes at the Allianz Arena on Tuesday.

Thomas Muller opened the scoring with a close-range header, and put the second on a plate for Mario Gomez minutes into the second half.

Muller would controversially play a role in Arjen Robben’s goal after apparently fouling Jordi Alba off the ball, before tapping in the fourth himself with eight minutes remaining to round off the biggest ever margin of victory in a Champions League semi-final.

Bayern could have been ahead as early as the fourth minute. Robben exchanged passes with Gomez, and it took the outstretched legs of Victor Valdes to deny the Dutch winger from point blank range.

Barca was winning the possession battle, but it was the Bavarian side who controlled the opening exchanges. Javi Martinez’ tumble in the box was correctly ignored by the referee, who was forced into a bigger no-call when Philipp Lahm’s shot struck Pique’s elbow.

The Barca defender headed wide at the other end from a corner, but it was an isolated scare from the blunted Catalans, and with 25 minutes on the clock, Bayern made their superiority count.

A corner was worked to Robben, whose cross was flicked on by Dante, and Muller was first to the ball, sneaking a header past Valdes at the post.

Gomez then picked up the first yellow card of the game for barging into Messi, and he was quickly followed into the book by Bartra and Martinez for challenges on Muller and Andres Iniesta either side of the interval.

Just like the first goal, Robben’s delivery was met by a Bayern head, with Muller guiding the ball towards the goal line, where Gomez was waiting to gleefully bundle the ball home.

The Bundesliga side was simply dominating, and the match threatened to get ugly very fast for Barca had Muller and Franck Ribery been more accurate when presented with the chance to pick their spot from great shooting positions.

But the third goal was always on the cards, and it duly arrived with 17 minutes remaining, albeit in contentious circumstances. Muller’s off the ball block on Alba went unheeded, and with the full-back out of the way, Robben curled sublimely into the far corner.

And in the 82nd minute, it was 4-0. David Alaba’s overlapping run down the left ended with a low cross into the six-yard area, where Muller was waiting to turn into the back of the net to leave the second leg at Camp Nou as little more than a formality, and finish off an epic 24 hours for Bayern.

  • HEINEKEN sponsors five Nigerians to UEFA Champions final

HEINEKEN sponsors five Nigerians to UEFA Champions final

As the much anticipated UEFA Champions League Final holds on May 25, HEINEKEN, will sponsor five Nigerians to the UCL Final in Wembley, London

Those to be sponsored are Diana Nwajiaku-Smart, Isaac Onochie Ijeh, Mayowa Opeyemi George, Franklin Chukwu Ijeh and Felix Amobichukwu Nwafor .

Through their inventiveness, ingenuity and resourcefulness these five Nigerians were able to win the HEINEKEN RACE TO THE FINAL CHALLENGE and an all-expense paid trip to watch the Final live at the Wembley stadium in London. The lucky winners proved to be exceptionally intelligent using their intellectual as well as the physical ability to outsmart 300 other participants in the HEINEKEN RACE TO THE FINAL CHALLENGE.

Saturday the 13th of April, began with 300+ HEINEKEN fans and UCL Final hopefuls gathering at the National Arts Theatre, Iganmu for the RACE TO THE FINAL CHALLENGE. Contestants were expected to cleverly solve 4 riddles to decode 4 ‘secret’ locations and race against the clock to visit all locations and complete the journey, with only the first five contestants to arrive at the Heineken Champions Planet winning the tickets to Wembley.

Through the Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology, contestants received a new riddle every time they clocked-in at a location. With the RFID technology, contestants’ clues were posted on their Facebook walls for their friends to help them when they were stuck. What started out as a keen competition with every man for himself turned out be a team effort with strangers working together as friends to solve riddles in order to progress in the race. The riddles led contestants to strategic locations around Lagos: Golden Tulip Hotel, Festac, Rhapsody’s, Ikeja City Mall, Sailor’s Lounge, Lekki and finally the Heineken Champions Planet, Victoria Island where the winners were celebrated.

The RACE TO THE FINAL CHALLENGE was tied to the recently unveiled HEINEKEN® UCL campaign called ‘Road to the Final’ with the launch of a television commercial titled “The Final”. In the commercial you get to see how, with imagination and resourcefulness, one man was able to race against the clock to witness club football’s most prestigious event – the Final itself live. He had to overcome many hurdles on his way from South America to London in just 24 hours. He proves to be a true Man of the World. And he got inspired by the inventiveness displayed by the great players in the UCL. The journey to the Final is filled with legendary adventures and stories. How he gets to the Final is as much fun as being at the Final.

“Taking a cue from the TV commercial, we created obstacles for contestants in the form of riddles and asked them to be inventive in solving the riddles then hit the road to the next destination where only the first five that arrive at the Heineken Champions Planet automatically win the 5 tickets to Wembley. The race should be great fun and an adventure in itself” said Jacqueline Van Faassen, Senior brand Manager, HEINEKEN

The mechanics of the challenge was designed not only to choose winners, but to bring out the real “Man of the World” in every participant in relation to the premium brand. It was also to demonstrate that Nigerians can display legendary acts through inventiveness and imagination by bringing out the can-do spirit in them and sportsmanship. Compared to a transparent draw in previous years, this year’s selection put every consumer’s destiny in their own hands.

The “Road to the Final” brings together Nigeria’s best in sports reporting like Colin Udoh, Charles Anazodo, Timi Okomi and Biola Kazeem, and legendary ex-internationals like Jay Jay Okocha, Daniel Amokachi and Peter Rufai amongst others who have visited the Heineken Champions Planet at different stages of the competition.

On the Road to the Final, HEINEKEN encourages fans to watch ‘The Final” TV advert on Heineken.com and to engage with the brand through a series of unique activities. Modern trade stores will sell special edition Heineken UEFA Champions League cans and special edition UEFA Champions League Magnum packs. In April and May, promotions will be running to offer a gift with purchase of the special UCL packs. In addition, HEINEKEN has adopted 75 UCL viewing bars around the country where promotions are being held and consumers can win spectacular UCL prizes including an invitation to the Heineken Champions Planet in Lagos.

As the ‘Road to The Final’ reaches its climax, HEINEKEN will equally invite fans to the semi-final and the final VIP viewing events that will host over 250 fans from across Nigeria every match night to experience a premium football viewing experience at the Heineken Champions Planet, Victoria Island, Lagos. For a chance to see the final in a uniquely HEINEKEN way at the Heineken Champions Planet, consumers sign up on-line via a Heineken quiz on Facebook or log on to Heineken.com.

One of the winners Diana Nwajiaku- Smart, commended HEINEKEN for the opportunity not just to participate in the RACE TO THE FINAL to win a ticket to the Wembley final, but also encouraging the true spirit of sportsmanship, respect and friendship. “The prize is beyond a ticket to the final, it also includes the opportunity to meet Heineken and UCL fans from around the world, take a tour of London and attend super premium parties organized by HEINEKEN, and of course the UEFA Champions League Final match being the highlight of the trip”.

UEFA plans tougher sanctions to combat racism

European football governing body, UEFA, are planning to introduce tough new sanctions to combat racism, with players found guilty of racist offences banned for a minimum of 10 matches, UEFA general secretary Gianni Infantino said on Wednesday.

Infantino also said there would be partial closure of stadiums for a first incident of racist abuse by fans and a full closure for a second offence, plus far tougher financial penalties.

The new sanctions, discussed by UEFA’s Executive Committee but not revealed until Wednesday, would affect all matches in the European competition.

Infantino, the opening speaker at the Soccerex business convention in Manchester, told delegates: “We have to have sanctions and they must have a deterrent effect and what we are proposing is if a player or official is convicted of racism, they should receive a 10-match suspension, at least.

“If supporters at a club are found guilty of racist abuse, the first sanction will be a partial closure of the part of the stadium from which the racist abuse took place.

“For a second offence, there will be the full closure and a minimum fine of 50,000 euros (42,588 pounds).”

The Swiss also said referees would be encouraged to abandon matches if there was racist abuse from fans towards players at games.

A number of high profile racist issues have had a huge impact in the recent past with Chelsea’s John Terry banned for four matches and Liverpool’s Luis Suarez for eight games for offences in England.

Kevin-Prince Boateng of AC Milan led his team off the field after a racist abuse during a friendly match in Italy against lower league club Pro Patria in January and Infantino said they backed Boateng’s stance, but hoped it would not happen again.

He did not say when the new rules would come into effect, but they are likely to do so for the start of next season

  • Lennon: Celtic still have a lot to do

Lennon: Celtic still have a lot to do

Celtic manager Neil Lennon has told his players that their UEFA Champions League campaign is not about to get any easier as they look to tie up qualification for the last 16.

The Scottish champions have enhanced their reputation in home and away games against Barcelona, narrowly losing at Camp Nou before claiming a famous victory in Glasgow.

They are second in Group G and in control of their own destiny, but Lennon does not want complacency to creep in ahead of tough clashes with Benfica and Spartak Moscow.

He said: “I really enjoyed the first game against Benfica and qualifying against Helsingborgs was a tremendous night for the players and the supporters. The win in Moscow was a huge psychological lift and it broke the hoodoo.

“Benfica away is as difficult as Barcelona away. Spartak at home will be very dangerous because they might just come here with nothing to lose.”

Celtic drew 0-0 at home to Benfica in a tight opening fixture which was the debut Champions League group game for the vast majority of their team.

But they have grown in confidence since then with a 3-2 win over Spartak showing they could take the game to teams away from home, before they defied the odds with their performances against Barcelona.

Ahead of Tuesday’s trip to Portugal, Lennon said: “So far the players have given us a hell of a ride. I don’t think anyone would have expected us to be where we are now.

“We have given ourselves a good foothold in the group and the players are developing very well.

“The expectation after the Barcelona game is that ‘you are going through to the last 16, it’s going to be comfortable for you’. But we still have a lot to do.”

  • UEFA Champions League: Ideye makes Top 10 Players to Watch

UEFA Champions League: Ideye makes Top 10 Players to Watch

Nigeria’s Brown Ideye has been listed among top ten players to watch in the UEFA Champions League despite failing to add to his 11 goals haul for Dynamo Kiev in their 4-1 defeat by PSG in Tuesday’s UEFA Champions League tie at Parc des Princes.

According to renowned online sports website, bleacherreport.com, the Nigeria international has now gone three successive games at PSG’s Paris home ground without a goal despite his high scoring credentials since the start of current campaign.

“Ideye Brown’s vertical jump would be well above average because he has a habit of outleaping defenders, who are several inches taller than him.

“He’s a shorter version of Mario Mandžukic in that Brown is more efficient at heading the ball than shooting it.

“This season, 45 percent of his goals have come from headers. Last season, Mandžukic netted 66.7 percent of his club goals from headers.

“Brown was impressive in UEFA Champions League qualification games against solid competition like Feyenoord and Borussia Mönchengladbach.

“However, he didn’t translate his good form against Paris Saint-Germain, where he ran aimlessly for most of the game,” the report read in part.

Meanwhile, Ideye has admitted that Dynamo Kiev played below par in the 4-1 loss in Paris.

Speaking with UEFA official website, the former Ocean Boys and Sochaux ace maintained that the French side were not superior during the encounter.

“I don’t think PSG were too strong for us. They’re a good team, but we played very badly and when you play badly you lose. The penalty we conceded for the first goal was a problem. After that we lost concentration. I’m used to playing on my own in attack, so I’m not going to complain about that. Sometimes I have a lot of the ball and sometimes I don’t. The most important thing is to make the most of the opportunities I get.”
