Works Minister David Umahi has said the people of Ebonyi State in the Southeast are not “Obidient”.

The minister said eligible voters in the state and other residents of Southeast would reciprocate President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his developmental strides with their votes.

Umahi, a former governor of the state, spoke at the weekend in Abakaliki, the state capital, during this year’s Iri Ji Festival of the OHANIVO General Assembly.

He said: “Let me use this opportunity to appreciate our dear President; I am addressing the Southeast people. I am addressing those who don’t understand what’s going on in the Southeast. I am addressing those who have occupied social media. I have told them that Ebonyi State and we are not ‘Obedient people’. We have been so marginalised and we are no longer ‘Obidient’.

“But it is the man that has given us a sense of belonging – President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. Let no Obidient come to Ebonyi State and say this state belongs to Obidients. There is no ‘Obedient’ person in Ebonyi State.”

The minister stressed that the Southeast would not repeat past political missteps.

“What we have is to return the good things that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has done for the Southeast and for Ebonyi State when the time comes.

“We will not be deceived again. The last election was a mistake, but we have become wiser,” he declared.

Highlighting President Tinubu’s infrastructural interventions, Umahi referred to major projects across the region, including the legacy road linking Cross River State to Ndibe Beach, Afikpo, Abomege, Ezza South, Ezza North, Ishielu, and Benue State.

“I will not be able to name all that President Tinubu is doing for us, but you see the legacy projects. President Tinubu only deserves our payback. Those who refuse to hear, they will hear us.

“We want to be a part of the United Nigeria. We want to be treated fairly. We want to be counted, and the President is doing that. So, we have no reason not to support him,” he added.

The minister also canvassed support for Governor Francis Nwifuru, assuring the people that his achievements would soon speak for themselves.

Assuring the state of Nwifuru’s re-election, Umahi said:  “Nothing will stop his second term because God has already endorsed it. Anyone fighting him is only struggling on social media.”

Communities in Ebonyi South Senatorial District, under the auspices of the OHANIVO General Assembly, also declared their support for the second-term bids of President Tinubu and Governor Nwifuru during the event.

They cited fairness, inclusiveness, and development as major reasons behind their decision.

Leaders of Ohaozara, Onicha, and Ivo local government areas of Ebonyi State said their endorsement was hinged on President Tinubu’s resolve to give the Southeast a pride of place in his administration’s development roadmap.

They also praised Governor Nwifuru for his deliberate implementation of the ‘People’s Charter of Needs’, which they said had touched every part of the state.

The Minister of Works, David Umahi, has assured that the people of Ebonyi state and the southeast will repay President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his developmental strides with their votes.

Umahi gave the assurance on Saturday, during the Ohanivo New Yam Festival (Iriji) celebration.

Speaking at the event, the Minister described the new yam festival as a cherished heritage handed down from the forefathers, thanking God for the opportunity to celebrate in good health.

“Iriji is ancient, from our forefathers, and we are grateful to God that we are celebrating the new yam festival in good health.”

He commended the leadership of Ebonyi State, noting that although Governor Francis Nwifuru could not attend due to his official engagement at the United Nations, the state was ably represented by the Acting Governor.

Turning to politics in the Southeast, Umahi was emphatic that Ebonyi people are not “Obidient.”

“Let me use this opportunity to appreciate our dear President – I am addressing the Southeast people. I am addressing those who darken the council without knowledge. I am addressing those who don’t understand what’s going on in Southeast.

“I am addressing those who have occupied the social media – I have told them, Ebonyi State, we are not ‘obedient people’, we have been so marginalized and we are no longer obidient.

The Minister further urged support for Governor Francis Nwifuru, assuring that his achievements would soon speak for themselves.

“We have no reason not to support Governor Francis Nwifuru. Don’t worry, when we were in office as Governor, people did not see all we were doing, but suddenly, it became visible to everyone, and so, it’s going on now.

“You will not see all the rural roads the governor is doing, you will not see the urban roads the governor is doing, you will not see the housing estate he is doing, you have occupied the social media, but it will happen to you soon. You will soon see them.”

Umahi concluded by urging the Acting Governor to convey the community’s concerns and requests directly to Governor Nwifuru.

Investors laud Tinubu, Umahi for dialogue on demolished $250m property

From the Nigerians in the diaspora came yesterday a thumb up for  President Bola Tinubu and Works  Minister Dave  Umahi, for initiating dialogue with investors affected by the demolition of the $250 million WIN HOMES Estates project in Okun Ajah, Lagos.

Stella Okengwu,an engineer,  Dr. Kimberly Stark, Faduri Oluwadare Joseph, Mr. Obie Aweghogho, and Oluwaseun Bamigbola Bovi  spoke at a news conference  on the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway.

They said the move represents a turning point for diaspora engagement and investor confidence.

The Nigerians in the Diaspora declared: “On behalf of countless Nigerians in the diaspora and with deep humility and patriotism, we address you today at this pivotal World Press Conference, held in response to a historic development, the Federal Government of Nigeria’s initiation of a formal communication channel, led by the Minister of Works, David Umahi, to engage with diaspora investors impacted by the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway realignment.”

They stressed that the dialogue was a sign of leadership, saying, “We commend President Bola Tinubu and Minister Umahi for their courage and statesmanship in responding to the cries for justice following the demolition of the $250 million WIN HOMES Estates project in Okun Ajah on October 5, 2024.

“This gesture signals to the global community that Nigeria is committed to protecting foreign direct investment, particularly from its 50 million-strong diaspora, who remain steadfast development partners.”

They highlighted the significance of WIN HOMES Estates as a beacon of inclusive development, uniting Nigerians across ethnicities, Yoruba, Igbo, Hausa, Ijaw, Efik, and others in a shared vision of progress.

“It created jobs for hundreds of unemployed youth, boosted local businesses, and sourced materials domestically, fostering hope among diaspora investors eager to rebuild Nigeria,” they noted.

However, they noted the damage caused by the demolition without notice, dialogue, or compensation shattered not just structures but trust, sending shockwaves through global Nigerian communities and contributing to a 30% drop in diaspora real estate investments.

They insisted their campaign had always been constructive, stressing, “Let us be clear: our year-long, peaceful, and legal advocacy has never been anti-government. Many of us supported this administration, believing in its promise of Renewed Hope. Our call is for fairness, justice, and the rule of law”.

They, however, urged the government to act decisively, stating, “We respectfully urge the government to conduct a proper evaluation of the demolished properties, ensure adequate compensation for WIN HOMES and its investors, and establish a Diaspora Investment Protection Desk to safeguard future projects of this magnitude.

“Such measures will help reverse decades of capital flight and restore investor confidence.”

They praised the Coalition of Civil Society for their tireless mediation, demonstrating the power of civic engagement in fostering national healing.

Looking ahead, they reaffirmed their commitment to Nigeria, “As private investors, we see this dialogue as a green light to global markets. Nigeria must move beyond welcoming capital to respecting and protecting it.

“By institutionalizing this approach, Nigeria can enhance its rankings on ease of doing business and investor confidence indices, unlocking billion-dollar opportunities from its diaspora.”

Explaining that the news conference celebrated not just the pain of loss but the possibility of progress, the investors, stressed: “Let this be a model for partnerships with Nigeria’s diaspora, ensuring that those who invest in her future are protected.

Thanking President Tinubu, the Works Minister, and all who stood with them during the period, they prayed, “May Nigeria rise to its full potential as a global investment hub.”

All South-East Govs backing Tinubu for 2027 – Umahi

The Minister of Works David Umahi has declared that every Governor in the South-East is fully behind President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid in 2027.

In a video shared on Sunday by @peopleofebonyi_, Ebonyi 1st Choice News Media, Umahi said: “All the governors of the South-East are supporting the president for 2027, and there’s no governor in the South-East that is not supporting the president.

“Governors are in charge of their states. You see Anambra, you see Enugu, you’ve seen Ebonyi, you’ve seen all that the governor is doing, you’ve seen Abia, you’ve seen Imo, so we are very confident that we’ll write our history.”

Positioning himself as a key figure in the region’s political future, Umahi insisted that when the presidency rotates to the South-East, he should be at the forefront because of his achievements both as governor and minister.

“When the presidency comes to the South-East, I should be at the forefront because of my performance.

“I’ve asked for a debate with anybody who feels otherwise. I created something out of this state. God used me to do it.”

He further argued that his record outshines others in the region.

“We compare governor to governor, time to time, and compare what you have done for the South-East. I beat my chest and say ‘Listen, God has used me, President Tinubu has used me, to better the lot of the South-East.’ You can tell when we last had it this good.”

Umahi also advised the South-East to avoid sentiment in its quest for the presidency.

“My advice for our people is to re-engage. We can’t get to the presidency by sentiment. We have to re-engage; we have to support other regions. And at the time of God, nobody will stop it. It will come to us. And who knows whether, at that time, it will be the man standing by the honourable minister.”

    • • Minister restates call on Southeast to support Tinubu in 2027

Works Minister Dave Umahi has dismissed reports that some sections of Phase 1 of the Lagos–Calabar Coastal Highway, recently inaugurated by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, have structural defects.

Umahi said what was erroneously viewed as cracks on parts of the completed 30 kilometres were ‘’untreated sand-filled shoulders’’of the highway and not the main carriageway.

“These cracks are not on any section of the actual road. They appeared on the untreated sand shoulders and are the result of natural water erosion, ‘’ he clarified during a news conference in Abuja yesterday.

The minister also spoke on the calls for Igbo presidency at the conference, primarily called by the ministry to give updates on ongoing road construction and rehabilitation efforts across the country.

Umahi assured that “no completed section of the carriageway will crack  once we complete the underground drainage and ducting systems.”

He also revealed that a new contract was being finalised by the ministry and the Lagos State Government to complete service lanes and integrate necessary drainage infrastructure on the Lagos section of the  700-kilometre coastal highway.  The purpose, according to him, is to ensure long-term integrity of the project.

On bridge infrastructure, Umahi said that the Third Mainland and Carter bridges remained closed to heavy-duty vehicles until final technical evaluations.

“Over-height trucks have caused structural damage to several flyovers. To address this, we are designing reinforced gantries fitted with spikes, and increasing the clearance height from 5.6 metres to 6.5 metres to prevent further damage and ensure public safety,”  he explained.

Giving an update on ongoing road projects, the minister stressed that a sweeping wave of infrastructure rehabilitation and reconstruction was underway across the country.

He said the government was intensifying interventions on multiple highways, bridges and strategic corridors to boost connectivity and economic resilience.

In Lagos, Umahi said that emergency repairs were ongoing along the Lagos–Badagry Expressway following severe flooding and drainage collapse.

He added that the Ibadan–Ife–Ilesha Road, initially awarded in 2019, was undergoing full concrete reconstruction following the collapse of the early sections.

The minister disclosed that major contractors, including KOPEC and Hitech Construction Company Ltd, have been mobilised to handle some roads in the  Southwest. Umahi said that additional work was being done on the Ife–Akure–Benin as well as the Ibadan–Oyo Road corridors.

In the Southeast, Umahi explained that delays on the Enugu–Onitsha Expressway prompted a split of the project between the original firm and SKCC. SKC is handling 72 kilometres of the highway at the cost of  N150 billion.

According to him, similar urgency has been extended to the First Niger Bridge–Summit Junction corridor, currently under emergency procurement.

He said nationwide, the government was deploying palliative measures on roads rendered impassable, including the Lokoja–Abuja Bridge, the Keffi Flyover in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT)  and flood-prone corridors in the Northeast.

The  Gombe–Bauchi–Kano–Maiduguri axis, he added,  is seeing fresh mobilisation, with contractors working to elevate washed-out segments and reinforcing critical infrastructure.

Umahi said the government was also pursuing legacy concrete road projects such as the 439-kilometre Akwanga–Jos–Gombe route.

In Niger and Taraba states, bridges and roads are being redesigned to meet new safety standards following years of neglect and underperformance, he also said.

The minister also pointed out that funding challenges, especially on   NNPC-backed roads, have forced a re-evaluation of priorities.

Umahi assured that “no project will be abandoned ” since  President Tinubu had directed ministries to explore new funding sources.

He also stressed that only contractors with capacity and financial commitment would be allowed to proceed with their contracts.

‘’We must see the money, the equipment and the commitment. And when a contractor is removed, there must be no more than a one-week gap before the next takes over,” Umahi added.

On calls for   Igbo President in 2027, Umahi argued that political power is not handed over without preparation and patience.

He said: “Let’s stop deceiving ourselves. Sentiments won’t get us(Southeast)  to the presidency. It takes strategy, dialogue and alliances. Politics is about reciprocity, rub my back; I rub yours. We can’t expect to win by isolating ourselves.

“When people ask, ‘When will it be our(Southeast) turn?’ I respond, God’s time makes all things beautiful. This is a political pregnancy that must not be aborted. When the time comes, an Igbo presidency will span eight years, not four.

“For now, it’s President Tinubu’s turn. He has launched reforms that must be completed. Anyone believing they can prematurely take over is living in an illusion. Hope is good, but we must remain realistic.

“When our(Southeast)  time comes, we will support one of our own. But he must one who is most qualified and who can account for their stewardship.

“I saw where a group claimed I was speaking only for myself when I said the Southeast should support another region first if we want our turn at the presidency. That’s not just my personal view, it’s a strategic truth”.

He noted that his critics failed to challenge the facts he presented about infrastructure development, saying, “They didn’t counter my arguments about the President’s infrastructure achievements in the Southeast.

“Instead, they attacked me personally. But I ask: in the last administration, did we have appointments and infrastructure? No. Now we have infrastructure, a tangible benefit.”

He emphasised that his support for Tinubu’s continuation in office till 2031  was rooted in political realism and a deep understanding of Nigeria’s democratic dynamics.

Umahi added that those who criticise fail to understand what the geo-political had benefited much from the All Progressives Congress(APC)-led Federal Government.

His words:  “They did not address the infrastructure achievements in the Southeast under this administration.

“Instead, they attacked me personally. In the last administration, we had neither appointments nor infrastructure.

“Today, we have infrastructure, which is progress.”

He further challenged narratives accusing him of prioritising development over immediate welfare while in office as the governor of Ebonyi State.

The minister said, “Some claim I created Dubai in Ebonyi while people were hungry. But how else do you stimulate the economy during a recession if not through infrastructure?

‘’That’s how you teach people to fish, not by giving them fish.’’

Calling for political education, truth-telling, and unity, the Minister stressed, “Let us educate our people. Let us tell them the truth. Let us stop being deceived. Because when our time comes, we will be ready with dignity, competence, and unity.”

…rebuts concerns over the integrity of the commissioned coastal highway segment

The Minister of Works, David Umahi, has reiterated his stance on the strategic importance of the South East supporting President Bola Tinubu’s second-term bid, citing unprecedented infrastructure investments in the region.

According to Umahi, no previous administration has delivered as much to the South East regarding road infrastructure as the current one, urging the region to acknowledge and align with the administration’s development priorities.

Addressing what he described as uninformed claims, Umahi also clarified that the recently commissioned 30 km section of the Lagos–Calabar Coastal Highway has no structural defects.

He explained that reports of cracks were misinterpreted, noting that these occurred only on the sand-filled shoulders, not the main carriageway.

The Minister made the clarifications during a press briefing in Abuja on Tuesday, where he also provided updates on ongoing road construction and rehabilitation efforts across the country.

On the need for the South East region to support President Tinubu’s second term bid, he said, “I saw where a group claimed I was speaking only for myself when I said the Southeast should support another region first if we want our turn at the presidency. That’s not just my personal view, it’s a strategic truth”.

He noted that his critics failed to challenge the facts he presented about infrastructure development, saying, “They didn’t counter my arguments about the President’s infrastructure achievements in the Southeast.

He further challenged narratives accusing him of prioritizing development over immediate welfare while in office as a governor, “Some claim I created Dubai in Ebonyi while people were hungry.

“But how else do you stimulate the economy during a recession if not through infrastructure? That’s how you teach people to fish, not by giving them fish. Even my governor is following suit, investing in infrastructure.”

The Minister stressed that political realities require Southeast leaders and citizens to make strategic decisions rather than being swayed by populist sentiment.

On Igbo presidency, the Minister spoke directly to questions about the timing of an Igbo presidency, reiterating that political power is not handed over without preparation and patience.

He said: “Let’s stop deceiving ourselves. Sentimentality won’t get us to the presidency. It takes strategy, dialogue, and alliances. Politics is about reciprocity, rub my back, I rub yours. We can’t expect to win by isolating ourselves.

Addressing structural issues on the commissioned 30 kilometres of 47.47 kilometres Section 1 of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway, the Minister clarified that recent observations of cracks were limited to the sand-filled shoulders of the road and did not affect the main carriageway.

“These cracks are not on any section of the actual road. They appeared on the untreated sand shoulders and are the result of natural water erosion.

In the South-East, he explained that delays on the Enugu–Onitsha Expressway prompted a reshuffle of contractors, prompting a split of the project between the original firm and SKCC, now handling a ₦150 billion 72 km section.

According to him, similar urgency has been extended to the First Niger Bridge–Summit Junction corridor, currently under emergency procurement.

He said nationwide, the government is deploying palliative measures on roads rendered impassable, including the Lokoja–Abuja Bridge, the Keffi Flyover in the FCT, and flood-prone corridors in the North-East.

According to him, the Gombe–Bauchi–Kano–Maiduguri axis is seeing fresh mobilization, with contractors working to elevate washed-out road segments and reinforce critical infrastructure.

He also pointed out that funding challenges, especially on NNPC-backed roads, have forced a reevaluation of priorities.

While some zones like the South-East initially received as little as 4 percent allocation, the Minister affirmed that “no project will be abandoned,” as the President has directed ministries to explore new funding sources.

He said the Government is also pursuing legacy concrete road projects such as the 439 km Akwanga–Jos–Gombe route.

    Umahi defends Southeast infrastructure distribution

Minister of Works, David Umahi, has debunked claims that the Southeast has been cheated in the infrastructure development agenda of the Tinubu Administration.

He insisted that the region is receiving its fair share of projects

The minister faulted a viral post by Linus Anagboso tagged: “The Politics of Asphalt: Why is the Southeast missing from the map?”

Umahi, in a statement, said the claims were an attempt to distort facts presented during his post-Federal Executive Council briefing.

“The writer chose to change the narrative of my press briefing after the FEC meeting on the Trans-Sahara Section 1, which runs from Ebonyi State to the Benue State border, a stretch of 123.64km awarded for N445.8 billion.

“He deliberately chose to call it the Oyo-Benue border road to deceive and incite Nigerians,” the minister said.

He explained that the third legacy project of the Tinubu Administration, which spans Cross River, Ebonyi, Benue, Kogi, Nasarawa and the FCT, covers 465km in total.

Of this, 231.64km x 2 lies within the Southeast, with N445.8 billion already awarded for that section and N108 billion released to contractors.

“This administration treats the Southeast with fairness. Where was the writer when Mr. President decided to revive abandoned projects in the region, many dating as far back as 2013?

“Over 90 per cent of them have been brought back to life and are ongoing.”

He listed critical road projects in the region, including the Second Niger Bridge access roads in Delta and Anambra states valued at N146 billion and N176 billion; the Enugu-Onitsha Road – a 208km stretch under the MTN Tax Credit Scheme valued at N202 billion; and the remaining sections being completed by CBC (Nig.) Other major projects, he said, include the Enugu–Port Harcourt Expressway (in four sections), the Enugu–Abakaliki Road, Afikpo–Abia–Imo Road, Onitsha–Owerri–Aba Road, Aba–Ikot Ekpene Road, and the Umuahia–Ikot Ekpene Road.

The Minister of Works, David Umahi, has debunked claims that the South East has been excluded from the infrastructure development agenda of the President Bola Tinubu administration, insisting that the region is receiving its fair share of road and bridge projects under the current government.

Reacting to a viral social media post by one Linus Anagboso, tagged “The Politics of Asphalt: Why is the South-East missing from the map?”, the Minister described the statement as misleading and politically motivated, aimed at inciting the people of the region against the President.

Umahi, in a statement on Monday, said the claims were not only false but also a deliberate attempt to distort facts presented during his post-Federal Executive Council briefing, especially concerning the scope and funding of the Trans-Saharan Road corridor passing through the South East.

The Minister urged the people of the region to back the President’s re-election in 2027, pledging that the region stands to benefit even more if it throws its weight behind the administration.

“Mr. President must have the votes of the South East up to 90% to cement this relationship. Enough of darkening counsel without knowledge. We are known for hard work and love, not hate.

“If we play our part in national unity, with God, one day, others will support us too,” he said.

He also praised South East Governors for their collaboration with the Federal Government and the developmental strides they are recording in their states. He urged the people to support their efforts and vote them in for a second term.

“I commend our leaders, the South Eastern Governors for their support and the great works they are doing. I urge our people to support them and our dear President for a second tenure in their respective offices,” he said.

Reaffirming his resolve to counter any attempt to mislead the public about the government’s development agenda, Umahi, stressed, “I will vocally continue to stand against any mischief meant to deceive our people.

“Never again shall we be deceived.”

Umahi faults claim of marginalisation of South East in road projects

The Minister of Works, Sen. Dave Umahi, has dismissed as false and misleading a publication by one Linus Anagboso (known as D-Big Pen) which claimed that the South East was neglected in road infrastructure development.

This is contained in a statement by Mohammed Ahmed, Director, Press and Public, in the Ministry and made available to newsmen on Monday.

Umahi said that the publication titled “The Politics of Asphalt: Why is the South East Missing from the Map?” was mischievous and deceptive.

He demanded that Anagboso retract the statement immediately.

According to the minister, President Bola Tinubu has been fair to all regions of the country, including the South East.

He noted that Tinubu had revived 90 per cent of abandoned road projects, some dating back to 2013, and still executing new ones without discrimination.

He also said that four Legacy Projects were approved to cover all six geo-political zones.

According to him, one of them, which runs from Cross River through Ebonyi, Benue, Kogi, Nasarawa to Abuja, includes a significant portion in the South East; about 231.64 kilometres and is already awarded at a cost of N445.8 billion.

The minister further said that the last Federal Executive Council meeting approved the review of the corridor length to 231.64 km at the same contract sum.

He added that Anagboso deliberately misrepresented this as an Oyo-Benue road to mislead the public.

He listed major projects ongoing in the South East to include the Second Niger Bridge Access Roads; Section 2A in Delta (N146 billion) and Section 2B in Anambra (N176 billion).

Other major ongoing projects the minister said were the Enugu-Onitsha Road (208 km), with MTN Tax Credit funding of N202 billion and CBC handling the remaining sections for N150 billion.

”There is also the Enugu–Port Harcourt Road in four sections; Enugu-Abakaliki, Afikpo-Abia-Imo, Onitsha-Owerri-Aba, Aba-Ikot Ekpene, and Umuahia-Ikot Ekpene,” he said..

Umahi urged the people of the South East to support Tinubu, noting that his administration had shown fairness and love to the region.

He also commended the South East governors for supporting the Federal Government and urged citizens to stand by them as they work for their second term in office.

According to him, One day, the South East will produce the President of Nigeria, but not in 2027.

He reaffirmed his commitment to correcting any false claims meant to deceive the people.(NAN)
