After God, my loyalty lies with Tinubu – Umahi

Minister of Works Sen. David Umahi has declared that after God, his loyalty lies with President Bola Tinubu saying that he takes instructions only from the duo.

Umahi made the declaration in Abakaliki while speaking with newsmen on the president’s recent commendation on him over some infrastructural feats.

The minister said the commendation was worth more than one trillion dollars to him as it shows he was on the right track and that God answers prayers.

“I have told the president even publicly that my loyalty is to God first and then, him.

“When a man gives you the type of trust Tinubu has given me, you will.be of the devil to betray him,” he said.

He said that anyone who betrayed Tinubu after receiving such level of trust and support would incur the wrath of God.

“Have you seen where a man presided over the procurement of a project worth N1.6 trillion and his boss did not call him to ask how he went about it?

“I am talking about one section of the project depending on the length.

Umahi vowed to continue praying for Tinubu and all those who love him and appreciate what his doing.

“I also dedicate the president’s commendation to all those who pray for me to succeed in serving the people.

“This means that contractors would be on their toes to complete about 30 mega projects which the president will inaugurate by Dec.20.

“I am involved in the construction and inspection of the projects scattered across the six geo-political zones of the country,” he said.

    • ‘Eleme axis opens in 10 days’

Works Minister Dave Umahi has said phase three of the East-West Road, a 15-kilometre four-lane dual concrete road from Eleme to Onne in Rivers State, will be completed before the year runs out.

The minister, who spoke while checking the progress of work on the road, also promised that the Eleme axis of the road would be open to the public in the next 10 days.

He restated the importance of the road to the economy, especially its link to key industrial assets, saying it was redesigned with reinforced concrete for durability.

Umahi said: “This project is within a very serious economic corridor of Nigeria. We have a lot of facilities here. There’s petrochemical, the refinery, Indorama, and a lot of other companies. So, this is very important. I am very happy with the quality of work being done.

“We’ve directed the contractor to wrap up this carriageway because it’s selected for inauguration in the next ten days and they have to do it day and night. I’m very confident that they’ll achieve it.”

The minister explained that certain sections of the road initially designed with flyovers and bridges would temporarily be completed with asphalt but would have full structural installations in the dry season.

He added: “The entire section will be opened. I know that there are some sections that we earmarked for flyovers and bridges. “By June 1, 2025, they’ll go back to Onne to continue with the Port Harcourt-bound section, doing exactly what they have done on the Eket-bound section.”

Hailing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his commitment to driving infrastructural development in the country, he said: “I commend the President very highly. He’s a man of great courage and he’s constructing roads. Before, Nigeria was building roads, but today, the President is constructing roads.

“It wasn’t easy, but with the determination of the President, the outcome is excellent. With the project’s quality and durability, it is going to last over 50 to 100 years without maintenance.

“The total value of the project is N156 billion and it is 30 kilometres by four lanes. It has solar lights. We’re going to install CCTV, put tolling points and relief parks so that people don’t park on the road again. It’s going to be a beauty on earth when we finish.”

Umahi calls on Peter Obi to join southeast leaders in endorsing Tinubu for 2027

Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, has said that all southeast governors are now working with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, saying that a regional political summit is being planned to formally adopt the president as the region’s preferred candidate for the 2027 general election.

Speaking in a special feature interview for an upcoming State House documentary commemorating President Tinubu’s second year in office, Umahi stated that the region’s political leadership, across party lines, is rallying behind the administration in recognition of its commitment to equity, development, and national unity.

In a statement issued on Tuesday by Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, Umahi noted that the Southeast is currently experiencing an unprecedented level of federal engagement, especially in infrastructure delivery, under Tinubu’s leadership.

He cited several ongoing federal road projects traversing the region, including the Port Harcourt–Enugu, Enugu–Abakaliki, Enugu–Onitsha, and Onitsha–Owerri highways, in addition to the Second Niger Bridge.

“For the first time, the Southeast has a Minister of Works. That’s not symbolic—it is strategic. What we are seeing are real, measurable projects on the ground,” Umahi noted, adding that President Tinubu had already paid 30 percent of the cost of the Second Niger Bridge.

Reflecting on the long-standing complaints of marginalisation in the region, Umahi said the narrative is changing fast under the current administration.

“When I was governor and even deputy governor in Ebonyi State, one of our greatest worries was the absence of federal presence. Today, under President Tinubu, we have at least four federal projects actively ongoing in the state”, he said.

He stated that the President’s approach to governance has restored hope and is redefining how national integration is perceived in the region.

“The Igbo man is naturally enterprising. What we want is fairness and equal opportunity—and that is what Mr. President is delivering.”

According to Umahi, the planned summit of political leaders from the region will further strengthen unity, accelerate project delivery, and enhance national cohesion.

“All Southeast governors, irrespective of political affiliation, are united in support of President Tinubu. The forthcoming summit will make that support official”, he said.

In a direct appeal to key opposition figures from the region, Umahi called on former Anambra State governor and Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, to join the collective effort to back the President’s re-election.

“Leadership is not about self—it’s about the people. If someone else is already doing what you would have done for your people, support him,” Umahi said, adding that Obi’s presence at the summit would be significant for the region’s unity and progress.

“I call on my brother, His Excellency Peter Obi, to join us and work with Mr. President. He must be part of this summit where we will collectively endorse President Tinubu for the 2027 election. I say it boldly: the South East is happy with the President”, he said.

In addition to the political declarations, Umahi offered updates on key national infrastructure projects, highlighting their transformative potential and the administration’s economic vision.

He said the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway is advancing steadily, with over 80 percent of Section 1—stretching from Ahmadu Bello Way to the Lekki Deep Sea Port and ending at Eleko Junction—already completed. Section 2, from Eleko Junction to the Lagos-Ogun border, is also in progress.

According to Umahi, users of Section 1 of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway will begin paying tolls from December.

“This road is not just a road, it’s a corridor of growth. It has solar-powered lights, CCTV infrastructure, and even carbon credit potential. It is designed as a six-lane concrete-paved highway”, Umahi said.

He further revealed that Sections 3 and 3B, totalling 65 kilometres and covering areas in Cross River and Akwa Ibom States, have been flagged off, with host communities expressing strong support and optimism over the project’s long-term benefits.

Turning to the Sokoto-Badagry Superhighway, Umahi noted its historical roots dating back to the Shehu Shagari administration.

“This project is breathing life into an old vision that was left dormant for over 40 years. It is part of the President’s broader effort to unlock Nigeria’s economic and trade corridors”, he said.

He also referenced the Trans-Saharan Trade Route and the soon-to-be-launched Ogun-Ondo-Niger Corridor, describing all four projects as key pillars of Nigeria’s long-term economic integration agenda.

“These are legacy projects, economically viable, environmentally sustainable, and future-driven. The President is turning visions into tangible infrastructure,” Umahi said.

He praised President Tinubu’s foresight, stating that the idea of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway was conceived by the President nearly seven years ago.

“Now, he is bringing that vision to life. It speaks volumes about his consistency, leadership, and unwavering commitment to Nigeria’s growth”, he said.

All South-East govs supporting Tinubu – Umahi

Sen. Dave Umahi, the Minister of Works, says all the governors in the South-East geopolitical zone are supporting President Bola Tinubu, urging the undecided, such as former governor Peter Obi, to join the train.

Umahi also said a section of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway was nearing completion and that users would have to pay a toll starting in December.

He made the remarks in an interview for an upcoming State House documentary marking President Tinubu’s second anniversary, Mr Bayo Onanuga, the President’s spokesman, said in a statement on Tuesday.

Umahi said all South East governors were supporting the President Bola Tinubu administration, regardless of their political affiliations.

According to the minister, the South East is witnessing a new wave of federal attention and infrastructure development under President Tinubu.

“The Igbo man is enterprising and blessed with God-given wisdom. What Ndi Igbo seeks is fairness, Nigeria that treats every zone equally. That is what President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is doing.

“Before, when I was governor and deputy governor, one of our major concerns in Ebonyi was the lack of federal presence.

“But today, nobody remembers that issue anymore. Under President Tinubu, at least four federal projects are ongoing in Ebonyi,” he said.

He noted that while cries of marginalisation used to dominate conversations in the South East, the current administration had made significant progress in addressing long-standing concerns about infrastructure and appointments.

“Today, the South East has a Minister of Works for the first time, and we’re seeing real projects – Port Harcourt to Enugu, Enugu to Abakaliki, Enugu to Onitsha, Onitsha to Owerri, and the Second Niger Bridge.

“The President has already paid 30 per cent of the cost of that bridge.

“All the governors in the South East, regardless of party affiliation, are working with the President. We’re even planning a summit to bring together all South-East leaders to endorse the President for the 2027 elections formally.

“We want our projects to be completed, the country’s unity to be strengthened and proper integration of Ndi Igbo,” said Umahi.

He urged key regional opposition figures to align with the President for the greater good of the South East.

“Leadership is not about self – it’s about the people. If someone else is already doing what you would have done for your people, support him. I call on my brother, His Excellency Peter Obi, to join us and work with Mr President.

“He must be part of this summit where we will collectively endorse President Tinubu for the 2027 election. I say it boldly: the South East is happy with the President,” he said.

Umahi gave an update on four major national projects: the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway, the Sokoto-Badagry Superhighway, the Trans-Saharan Trade Route, and the soon-to-be-procured Ogun-Ondo-Niger Corridor.

He described them as transformative investments designed to unlock Nigeria’s economic potential and deepen regional integration.

On the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway, the minister said over 80 per cent of Section 1 – spanning 47.47 kilometres from Ahmadu Bello Way to the Lekki Deep Sea Port and terminating at Eleko Junction – had been completed.

He added that work was also progressing on Section 2, which covered 55 kilometres from Eleko Junction to the Lagos-Ogun border.

“By December, we will toll Section 1 of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway. We project a 10-year return on investment. The road has solar-powered lighting and CCTV infrastructure and offers carbon credit advantages.

“It is more than a road – it is an economic corridor and a catalyst for regional growth. We have completed 30 kilometres of Section 1 and are on track to complete an additional 10 in Section 2. These are six-lane, concrete-paved highways.

“Just days ago, we flagged off Sections 3 and 3B – 65 kilometres in total – covering 38 kilometres in Cross River State and 27 kilometres in Akwa Ibom. The host communities’ excitement speaks to these projects’ transformative impact,” said the minister.

Commenting on the Sokoto-Badagry Superhighway, the Minister explained its historic significance, noting that the route was conceived during the Shehu Shagari administration over four decades ago.

“The Trans-Saharan Trade Route dates back to colonial-era planning. President Tinubu is now bringing these long-abandoned visions to life,” he said.

Umahi said God gave Tinubu the vision for the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway seven years ago.

“Today, he is actualising that vision. These projects testify to his unwavering commitment to national development and a better future for all Nigerians.”

He reaffirmed that the legacy projects were economically viable, environmentally sustainable, and forward-looking.

  • Tinubu’s govt prioritises infrastructure renewal, completes 279 road projects nationwide – Umahi

Tinubu’s govt prioritises infrastructure renewal, completes 279 road projects nationwide – Umahi

Nigeria’s Minister of Works, David Umahi, has disclosed that the Bola Tinubu administration has completed 279 road projects, including 19 major capital projects and 260 palliative interventions, within its first year in office.

He said the achievements signal a renewed push to overhaul Nigeria’s transport infrastructure and catalyze economic growth.

Speaking at the Ministerial sectoral briefing in Abuja on Friday, Umahi acknowledged the Ministry’s progress, highlighting reforms introduced to improve project delivery.

“We’ve changed the approach to contractor mobilization. Previously, contractors hesitated to accept mobilization because the Procurement Act states that mobilization is optional.

“We now include clear terms in our contracts; if a contractor fails to mobilize within 30 days of signing, the project will be terminated.”

He noted that this new policy has reduced delays and encouraged more responsible bidding, adding that contractors must now demonstrate sufficient liquidity before being awarded certain projects.

“We are also classifying contractors to prevent mismatches in project scale and capacity,” he explained.

Umahi also announced that the President had directed that local contractors and developers be developed to grow the economy, saying, “We can’t continue to use foreign contractors to grow our economy. You go to China, you find out who is working. We have to grow our people’’.

The Minister emphasized the importance of developing local capacity, he said, “Let me also announce that Mr. President directed that we must grow the local contractors. Other countries grow their economies by using local talent, we must do the same”.

Under the new arrangement, the Minister said five engineers who are not at work would be posted to the legacy project sites to learn.

“We have a programme which we call “The New Tool Programme’’, whereby in every state we are getting five civil engineers who are not at work, and we are posting them to these four legacy projects and other legacy projects of the country so that they can learn.

“That’s why we introduced the first concrete pavement technology. It’s durable and exposes any quality deficiencies immediately, unlike asphalt, which can temporarily mask poor workmanship.”

The Minister also dismissed reports circulating on social media alleging that he and other ministers planned a trip to London. Speaking during a press briefing, he clarified:

“I have not been to London in the last two years. I have not discussed any such trips with anyone. I have too much work to do here in Nigeria.

“Let me make it clear, any foreign travel by a minister requires written approval from the President. These claims are entirely false and should be disregarded.”

He further cautioned the public against accepting social media reports as fact and urged his critics to seek clarification before making allegations.

“Even when I served as a governor, I never travelled out of the country without first obtaining the President’s permission. I operate strictly by the rule of law.”

On the ongoing projects, the Minister revealed that President Tinubu inherited 2,604 major road projects valued at ₦13 trillion when he assumed office in May 2023.

However, due to policy decisions such as the removal of fuel subsidy and the floating of the naira, the current value of these projects has surged to nearly ₦20 trillion.

“In addition to what we inherited, we initiated 65 new road projects and four transformative legacy projects. We have also completed 260 palliative road interventions valued at about ₦208 billion,” the Minister said.

He explained that the President directed the Ministry to re-prioritize and regionalize the existing projects in line with national economic corridors, which he said led to the identification of 440 high-priority projects for review, taking into account new economic realities and inflation in construction material costs.

“We have completed 19 inherited capital projects across all zones. For example, in Kano, the Yakassi Road and the 105-kilometre Hadejia Road are now in use.

“In Lagos, we have completed Section I of the Apapa-Oworonshoki-Ojota Expressway, a concrete road serving the Lagos Port, and extended the Third Mainland Bridge with CCTV coverage,” he said.

According to him, other completed projects include the 84-kilometre Lagos-Badagry Expressway, the reconstructed five-span Artisan Bridge in Enugu, the Angola Bridge, the Shendam Bridge in Plateau State, and the Jimeta Bridge in Adamawa, while cross-border infrastructure, such as the Nigeria–Cameroon Bridge, has also been delivered.

The Minister said most of the 260 palliative projects, spread across the six geopolitical zones, have been completed, and while they may appear small individually, they play vital roles in sustaining economic activity and interstate mobility.

“We’re seeing progress across all regions. For instance, in the South-South, the Lokoja–Benin Road is under construction across three segments handled by different contractors, including BUA and CCC.

“The terrain is challenging, and we have switched to reinforced concrete pavement to ensure durability,” Umahi explained.

In Edo State, the Minister said work is progressing on the Benin–Auchi Road, which had previously suffered persistent gridlocks due to poor soil conditions.

One carriageway has been completed and is now in use, while work on the second is ongoing.

Also in the region, the Minister said Section 2 of the East-West Road between Ahoada and Kaima, currently at 75 percent completion, is scheduled for commissioning in December.

In Rivers State, he said a new reinforced concrete pavement is being used to redesign the Eleme Junction, one of the most congested parts of the Port Harcourt area.

The Calabar–Itu–Ikot Ekpene Road is also being reconstructed in phases, with major progress recorded by contractors such as HITECH and REYNOLDS, he said.

In the South-West, he said the Federal Government has cleared 38.3 kilometres of the Lagos–Calabar Coastal Highway, with the first 10 kilometres almost completed.

Umahi also confirmed that Section I of the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway, which was inherited by the current administration, has been completed, as well as major sections of the Seme–Badagry evacuation corridor.

The North-West, according to the Minister, has also witnessed significant activity, Umahi said, citing the Abuja–Kaduna–Zaria–Kano Road is being reconstructed in phases.

Sections 1 and 3, covering 118 kilometres, have been awarded for ₦252 billion, with solar-powered streetlights installed along the corridor, he said, adding that about five kilometres of rigid pavement are already in use.

He added that Section 2, stretching 128 kilometres, has been redesigned and awarded ₦525 billion due to the poor condition of the old route.

On the Sokoto–Zamfara–Katsina–Kaduna corridor, Umahi also noted that about 750 kilometres of roads are being handled by various contractors, including CBC, Setraco, and Mothercat, with the corridor featuring rigid pavement to improve its longevity.

The Minister said the Sokoto–Illela Road, measuring 120 kilometres, has also commenced, with a contract value of ₦482 billion.

In addition, he said the Sokoto–Badagry Superhighway, a 47-year-old concept initiated during the Shagari administration, is finally taking shape, adding that the first section, 258 kilometres in Kebbi State, has been awarded for ₦958 million, while the second section is awaiting Federal Executive Council approval.

While highlighting efforts in the North-Central and North-East. According to him, the Minister said the previously dilapidated Akwanga–Jos–Bauchi road has been redesigned and re-awarded with rigid pavement to handle heavy-duty traffic, adding that several completed bridges, including those in Shendam and Jimeta, have improved connectivity in these zones.

The administration, according to Umahi, is also pushing ahead with legacy projects, stressing that Section 1 of the Lagos–Calabar Coastal Highway (7.4 kilometres with three lanes on each side) is nearing completion.

He said Section 2 of the road, which stretches 55 kilometres, has been awarded at a cost of $1.3 billion and includes multiple bridges. Already, over seven kilometres of the road have been laid.

The Ministry is also reviewing the future of Lagos’ aging Carter Bridge, with discussions ongoing about either its reconstruction or full replacement.

“We are not only building new roads but also fixing old ones and reimagining our national transport grid. As the Chinese say, ‘If you want to make a country great, build roads,’ and that is what President Tinubu is doing,” Umahi said.

On the Ilesha-Ibadan road, the Minister said the subject was presented at the Federal Executive Council, noting that the First Lady, Sen. Oluremi Tinubu, first drew his attention to the state of the road.

“Because it’s a very bad situation. It is an inherited project by KOPEC. And today, the total amount, you know, that is allocated to this project from 2003 to 2025, is only ₦17 billion.

“And this whole stretch is to, you know, if an election. And then we have another project that is stretching from Ilesha to Akure to Benin. Which is awarded for ₦751 billion.

“And that is to HITECH. So, we’ve aggregated these two projects. It’s one stretch of the route.

“And we presented it to the Federal Executive Council for formal intervention of the new tool. And of course, we added Ore-Benin. And so, they are all settled together.

“And honestly, the roads are in a very terrible situation. What we have done is to ask for the available funds to use it and do palliative. While we secure permanent funds for the intervention.

“So, I want to assure you that I will not allow Mr. President to rest. Until he gives me money to reconstruct this road. And I will do it,” he assured.

SAN urges Tinubu to order Umahi to follow rule of law in road project disputes

A Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Mohammed Ndarani Mohammed, has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to ensure that the Minister of Works, David Umahi, upholds the rule of law in the discharge of his duties, particularly in matters involving land and infrastructure development.

The appeal followed a dispute concerning a property in Lagos reportedly allocated to a consortium of investors by the Lagos State Government after fulfilling all legal requirements.

Mohammed, who serves as the principal partner representing the investors, expressed concern over a recent development where the alignment of a federal road project was allegedly adjusted in a way that affects the investors’ property.

He emphasized the importance of respecting existing legal frameworks, including the Land Use Act and the 1999 Constitution, to preserve public trust and investor confidence in Nigeria.

The senior lawyer urged President Tinubu to ensure that federal agencies and officials act within the bounds of the law, and also called for clarity from the Attorney-General of the Federation on the extent of federal authority in land-related matters.

We must not permit impunity, lawlessness, or abuse of public office to go unchecked. Nigeria belongs to all of us, not a privileged few with temporary power.

“We call on the media, civil society, legal community, and all patriotic Nigerians to stand in defence of the rule of law and support our clients’ just cause.”

He  assured  them that the 52-year-old bridge had been certified  permanently  safe and stable by the Ministry’s  Controller of works in Lagos, Olukorede Kesha, and Buildwell, the contractor  that handed  the repair.

Works Minister Dave Umahi, however, said after inspecting the structure yesterday, that its carriageways required re-surfacing.

Umahi said: “We are here exactly three weeks after, as promised. The controller of works and Buildwell have confirmed no single deflection, and I can attest to that.

He thanked President Bola Tinubu for prompt directive to address the bridge’s failure and to Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for his support.

Umahi said: “The lesson we have learnt is to constantly inspect these old bridges, which have not received adequate maintenance until President Tinubu came into office.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ebonyi has commended the Minister of Works, Sen. David Umahi, for resisting pressures to engage in a rift with Gov. Francis Nwifuru of Ebonyi.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that insinuations were rife in the state that the acclaimed “father and son” were at loggerheads over the control of the state’s party structure.

The Chairman of APC in Ebonyi, Chief Stanley Okoro-Emegha, however told NAN on Friday, that it was in the state’s interest that there was no Umahi-Nwifuru rift.

“Umahi as a leader has made his marks in Ebonyi and Nigeria, realising in the process that there is time for everything.

“There is a time to reign, step aside and stand as a father.

“A good dancer dances with wisdom, leaves the stage when the ovation is loudest and refuses to yield to pressure to remain on stage,” he said.

Okoro-Emegha said that Umahi’s debunk of the insinuations of conflict portrayed him as a patriot who did not want Ebonyi to undergo the political upheavals witnessed in some states.

“He admitted to have been put under from within to tell the governor certain things but he never did so.

“His declaration of leaving the governor to decide the party’s affairs is a welcome development as the governor is the party’s leader in the state.

“The governor knows what is good for the party and when he succeeds, the party succeeds,” he said.

He urged party faithful to always ignore the antics of naysayers and be committed to its ideals for continuous success.

It would be recalled that Umahi while declaring open, the commencement of work on the Ebonyi section of 118.km trans-Saharan super highway said he never signed a one-term agreement with Nwifuru.

“I fought battles to make Nwifuru governor without conditions and I will support him for eight years.

“I was in control of the state party structure for eight years as the governor and will therefore, not interfere with Nwifuru’s leadership.

“People think I will return to struggle for power after leaving office but I am not available for such distractions,” the minister had said.
