    Four men docked for causing public disturbance

    Four unemployed men on Wednesday appeared before a Gudu Upper Area Court in Abuja for allegedly inciting disturbances.‎

    The men are Samuel Ezeala, 25, Ibrahim Umar, 22, Ibrahim Shilu 23 and Zadine Yahaya, 24.

    They were arraigned on charges of joint-act and inciting disturbances at a public peace.‎

    ‎The Prosecutor, Fedelix Ogubwe, told court that one Abubakar Umar of the Chief’s Palace in Garki, Abuja reported the matter at the Garki Police Station on May 29.

    Ogubwe said the defendants and 16 other men now at large were found at Apo Roundabout, Abuja using sticks, cutlasses and iron in beating one another.

    He said that the action caused a breach of public peace, adding that the offence contravened Sections 97 and 114 of the Penal Code.

    The accused men, however, pleaded guilty but Umar pleaded not guilty to the charges.

    The Judge, Alhaji Umar Kagarko, granted the defendants bail in the sum of N20, 000 each with one surety each in like sum.

    He adjourned hearing on the matter and reserved sentencing and conviction of Ezeala, Shilu and Yahaya until June 2.

    Three charged with stealing in Church

    Three men, Hamza Salihu, Akorede Babalola, and Isaac Aboyomi, were on Wednesday, arraigned in an Upper Area Court, Gudu, Abuja for allegedly stealing in Church.

    The trio, whose ages ranged between 40 and 32, have no fixed address.

    They are standing trial on a two-count charge of criminal conspiracy and theft.

    Mr Fidelis Ogbobe, the prosecutor, told the court that Mr Austin Abua, Chief Security Officer of Our Lady Queen of Nigeria Pro-Cathedral Church, Garki, reported the matter at Garki Police Station on May 27.

    Ogbobe said the three defendants “formed a common intention by criminally trespassing into the said Church with the intention to committing an offence of theft.”

    He said one of the accused, Salihu, while in the Church, put his hand into the bag of one of the worshipers and stole her handset and N25, 000.

    According to the prosecutor, he was arrested in the process which also led to the arrest of his accomplices.

    Ogbobe said the offence was contrary to sections 343 and 287 of the Penal Code.

    However, the three defendants pleaded not guilty to the charges.

    The judge, Mr Umar Kagarko, granted the defendants bail in the sum of N100, 000 each.

    The judge also ordered each of them to produce a reliable surety in like sum.

    He said the prosecutor should confirm the internal and external addresses of the sureties, and adjourned hearing until July 26.

     

  • Police arraign man for theft

    Police arraign man for theft

    ‎The police, on Thursday, arraigned a 31-year-old man, Osinachi Okocha, in a Gudu Upper Area Court, Abuja, for alleged theft.

    Okocha is facing charges of criminal conspiracy and theft.

    The Police Prosecutor, Urom Otu, told the court that the matter was reported at the Apo Police Station by Irene Onye of Wumba village, Apo, Abuja, on May 17.

    He said that ‎Okocha and Bulus Lunkat, now at large, who are the plaintiff’s employees, conspired and stole eight alloy-reams, special iron, Dyna radiator and some wires, all valued at N120, 000.

    The prosecutor said that during the police investigation into the matter, Okocha admitted to committing the offence‎ and confessed to  have sold the items to an unknown person.

    He further said that all efforts to recover the items proved abortive, adding that the offence contravened Sections 289 and 97 of the Penal Code.

    However, Okocha in court, denied committing the offence and the judge, Alhaji Umar Kagarko, granted the defendant N150, 000 bail and one surety in like amount.

    He adjourned the case to July 28 for hearing.

     

  • Security guard docked for stealing puppy

    A 26-year-old Security guard, Monday Paul, was on Friday arraigned in a Gudu Upper Area Court, Abuja, for allegedly stealing a puppy.

    He is facing a two-count charge of criminal trespass and theft.‎

    The prosecutor‎, Fedelix Ogubwe, had told the court that one Terji Edwards of Hints Security Services Limited, Abuja, reported the matter at the Durunmi Police Station on May 12.

    He said the defendant criminally trespassed into his house by jumping the fence and stole a puppy.

    The prosecutor said the offence contravened Sections 348 and 287 of the Penal Code.

    The defendant, however, denied committing the offences.

    The judge, Alhaji Umar Kagarko, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N50, 000 and one surety in like sum and adjourned the case until June 21 for hearing.‎

     

  • Man docked for inflicting injury on policeman’s lip

    ‎A 30-year-old man, Ali Sale, was on Friday arraigned in a Gudu Upper Area Court, Abuja, for allegedly injuring a policemen on the lip.‎

    He was docked on charges bordering on ‎joint act and voluntarily causing hurt without provocation.‎

    ‎The prosecutor‎, Fedelix Ogubwe, had told the court that one Sgt. Zakari Sale, of the Nigeria Police Force Headquarters, Abuja, reported the matter at the Garki Police Station on May 10.

    He said that the complainant went to Garki to buy food, and suddenly the defendant; one Genesis and two others at large‎, attacked him and beat him up.‎
    He said in the process the complainant was seriously injured on the lip and was taken to the Police Hospital, where he spent N14, 700 for treatment.
    The prosecutor said the offences contravened Sections 76 and 246 of the Penal Code.
    The defendant, however, denied committing the offences.

  • Man docked for gold, diamond fraud

    A 42-year-old man, Nnamdi Bernard, was on Tuesday arraigned in a Gudu Upper Area Court, Abuja, for allegedly collecting N3million from one Idoko Chinedu in the guise of supplying him with gold and diamond.

    Bernard of Tunda Lugbe, Abuja, docked on charges bordering on criminal conspiracy and criminal breach of trust, denied committing the offences.

    The judge, Alhaji Umar Kagarko, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N3.4 million and one surety in like sum and adjourned the case until June 23 for hearing.

    The prosecutor, Joshua Ayanna, had told the court that Chinedu of Life Camp, Abuja, reported the matter to the FCT Police Command on April 19.

    He said that the defendant and two others now at large conspired and deceived the complainant that they would supply him gold and diamond.

    He further said that the defendant fraudulently collected N3, 030, 000 from the defendant and failed to deliver the said products.

    The prosecutor said that when the complainant demanded for his money, the defendant threatened to kill him.

    The offences contravened Sections 97 and 312 of the Penal Code.

    Two women, Blessing Eze and Margaret Ekop, are facing trial in a Gudu Upper Area Court, Abuja, for allegedly inflicting injuries on a woman’s neck and face.

  • Court discharges men accused of causing grievous hurt, criminal trespass.

    A Gudu Upper Area Court, Abuja, has discharged two defendants-Aliyu Yaro and Abdulsalam Sadiq, docked on five-count charge, bordering on joint-act, criminal trespass, criminal force, assault, mischief and causing hurt to one Aisha Yahaya.
    The judge, Alhaji Umar Kagarko, ordered the release following an application by the defence counsel, Mohammed Farouk, who urged the court to strike out the case in line with Section 351 of Administration of the Criminal Justice Act(ACJA).
    ‎The judge explained that the defendants were arraigned on Feb. 1 and adjourned the case till March 27, for hearing,
    The judge said that the matter was further adjourned on the request of the prosecutor, Fidelix Ogbubwe till April 18.
    He said that, ‎neither the plaintiff or prosecutor have an explanation for their absence in court, hence he discharged the defendants.
    The judge advised that any aggrieved party can appeal through the High Court.‎
    Yaro and Sadiq were arraigned on a five-count charge of joint-act, criminal trespass, criminal force and assault, causing hurt and mischief.
    The prosecutor had told the court that the plaintiff had a disagreement with the defendants and reported the matter at the Garki Police Station on Jan. 28.
    He said the defendants, however, evaded police invitation and criminally trespassed into the plaintiff’s room, beat her up and damaged her property.
    The defendants pleaded not guilty.

    Man with stolen ATM cards docked in Abuja

    A  28-year-old man, Ifeanyi Obasi, was charged on Teusday before a Gudu Upper Area Court, Abuja, for allegedly attempting to make withdrawals with 10 stolen Automated Teller Machine (ATM) cards.

    Obasi, whose address is unknown, is facing a two-count charge of possession of stolen items and theft.

    Police Prosecutor Fidelis Ogbobe told the court that the complainant, Galadima Usman of First Bank, Garki, reported the incident at Garki Police Station on April 7.

    Ogbobe said the complainant alleged that the accused attempted to withdraw money with stolen ATM cards bearing different names at the bank in Area 3, Abuja.

    “During police investigations, the accused could not give a satisfactory explanation how he came about the ATM cards.”

    The offences contravened Sections 95 and 319(a) of the Penal Code.

    The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

    The judge, Mr Umar Kagarko, granted the accused N100, 000 bail with one surety in the like sum.

    He adjourned hearing until June 6

     

  • Court jails 49-year-old man for stealing purse

    A Gudu Upper Area Court, Abuja, has sentenced a 49-year-old man, Ibrahim Jibril to six weeks imprisonment for stealing a purse.

    Jibril of no fixed address pleaded guilty and was subsequently convicted on a two-count charge of criminal trespass and theft levelled against him.

    The judge, Mr Umar Kagarko, however, gave the convict an option of N6,000 fine.

    Kagarko said he considered the convict’s age in giving him light sentence, and also because he did not waste the time of the court as he quickly admitted committing the crime.

    Prosecutor Fidelis Ogbobe had told the court that on March 27, the convict “criminally trespassed into the building of the Accountant General of the Federation (AGF).

    “He went into the office and stole a purse belonging to one Mrs Oloruyonu Maria, a staff of the office of the AGF.

    “During police investigation, the said purse was recovered from him,’’ he said.

    The prosecutor said the offence was contrary to Sections 348 and 284 of the Penal Code.
