Eno hails Eket council over N50m grant to SMEs, construction of city hall

Akwa Ibom Governor Umo Eno has said that local governments in the State have no excuse not to execute projects that positively impact the socioeconomic well being of people at the grassroots.

Eno said this at the weekend when he witnessed the disbursement of N50million Eket ARISE empowerment initiative small business grants to 500 beneficiaries by Eket local government.

The Governor also commissioned the 5,000 capacity Eket city hall as well as performed the foundation stone laying for the ultra-modern Eket legislative complex.

Excited by the three landmark achievements of the council, Eno, who was represented by the commissioner for local government and chieftaincy affairs, Frank Archibong, said the projects were in line with the ARISE Agenda of his administration.

He said: “I am excited to be in Eket. This one is a landmark project. Whenever you see this picture anywhere you will know that this is Eket. Speakers have said that this is the hall for the senatorial district. It is not just a hall for the senatorial district, the state can also use the hall.

“His Excellency the Governor, who has sent me to represent him at this event, will be in this hall very soon and I am sure he will add to what has been done here.

“This three-pronged event of the disbursement of N50 million, the first of it’s kind in any local government in Nigeria, foundation stone laying of the legislative chamber and of course the commissioning of this magnificent edifice is the one that will go down in the annals of the history of this land.

“And I make bold to say that this is ARISE Agenda at work in the local government. His Excellency is desirous of seeing more life touching projects dot the landscape of every local government area in the state”.

Chairman of Eket local government area, Mr. Akaniyene Tommey, said that each of the projects reflected his determination to complement the transformative ARISE Agenda of Governor Umo Eno.

He said: “the edifice is more than just a building; it is a symbol of unity and progress. With seating capacity of 5,000, complemented by offices and mini conference Hall, the facility is designed to serve as a premier hub for major events, conferences and social gatherings.

“Beyond it’s cultural and economic significance, it will be a key driver of our internally generated revenue and create numerous employment opportunities.

“The Eket ARISE Empowerment Initiative SmallBiz Grant of N50million to 500 entrepreneurs is a clear demonstration of our resolve to support small and medium enterprises (SMEs) as the backbone of our local economy just like His Excellency, Pst Umo Eno has prioritized empowering SMEs”.

Eno approves 15 mini buses for female commercial drivers

Akwa Ibom governor Umo Eno has approved the immediate disbursement of 15 mini buses to female commercial drivers in the state in commemoration of the International Women’s Day.

The buses will be handed over to all female drivers registered under the Akwa Ibom State Female Commercial Drivers Association.

Eno, who gave the directive, expressed delight at seeing women venture into areas of skills formerly dominated by men.

The governor stated that his administration has laid the foundation for inclusive governance, where women have been given significant roles in the power equation.

“The rights and privileges of women have been protected by laws that criminalize gender-based violence and other discriminatory practices.

“We have taken bold and decisive steps to prosecute those who engage in gender-based violence, such as rape, wife battering, and other morally reprehensible acts against women”, the Governor said.

Eno pledged to continue supporting women to accelerate and succeed, noting that through the Ibom Leadership and Entrepreneurial Centre, his administration has provided jobs to over 800 female youths and will release ₦750,000 to each trainee.

He also promised to equip a female automobile repair trainee set to graduate in May with necessary tools and resources to establish her career successfully.

Mrs. Helen Eno-Obareki, Coordinator of the Office of the First Lady of Akwa Ibom State, described Governor Umo Eno as a gender-friendly leader who prioritises women’s inclusion in governance.

“Under Governor Eno’s administration, women have been actively involved in leadership positions, with four women appointed into the State Executive Council, five female chairmen, 26 female vice executive council members, and over 130 female councillors and supervisors across various local government areas.”

Mrs. Eno-Obareki emphasised the importance of empowering women in leadership, promoting gender equality in education, and taking a stand against gender-based violence.

She noted that Governor Eno’s administration is actively driving these causes, ensuring women are not sidelined in governance and economic opportunities.

Also speaking, the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Welfare, Mrs. Inibehe Etukudo, welcomed the Governor, government officials, and Akwa Ibom women to the event.

She stated that the 2025 International Women’s Day is a time to reflect and celebrate the incredible contributions of women in all spheres of life, noting that the theme “Accelerate Action” is a powerful call to action towards advancing gender equality and empowering women and girls to realize their full potentials.

Our correspondent reports that the event featured a march-past by women and an exhibition of agricultural products from all Local Government Areas of Akwa Ibom State.

Governor Eno dismisses fraud allegations against predecessor Emmanuel

    …says media trial must stop

Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, has refuted claims that his predecessor, Udom Emmanuel, is under investigation for fraud by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

Speaking at a Town Hall meeting with the people of Abak Federal Constituency at the Abak Township Stadium, Governor Eno described the allegations of N700 billion misappropriation as false and baseless.

He emphasised that Udom Emmanuel served the state diligently and deserves appreciation, not false accusations.

The former governor had visited the EFCC headquarters in Abuja on Tuesday evening in response to an invitation.

However, despite being allowed to leave the same day and returning to his home in Lagos, some media outlets wrongly reported that he was detained over the alleged fraud.

Governor Eno, dismissed the rumours, saying such figures and allegations are unknown to his government.

Governor Eno said the attitude of people trying to drag down leaders who sacrificed for the common good of the people, tends to discourage people from committing to service.

“Because at the end of the day, the people don’t show you that gratitude.

“When a man has served his state meritoriously like Deacon Udom Emmanuel did, honestly, he should be honoured, he should be respected.

“And so I don’t see a place for this kind of information that is going on. It’s not correct.

“I don’t believe it should go on. I don’t believe so. So, I don’t know where they get the figures from. I don’t know where they churn it out from, but I can tell you as a sitting Governor, that it is not correct.

“It is not true. The media trial must and should stop forthwith. And we need to dimiss this issue with a pinch of salt”, the governor added.

Akwa Ibom seeks presidential intervention on erosion, deep seaport

Akwa Ibom Governor Umo Eno on Friday led a delegation of stakeholders to meet with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the State House, Abuja for intervention in addressing the state’s ecological challenges and advancing the Ibom Deep Seaport project.

Eno highlighted the urgency of tackling severe gully erosion threatening critical infrastructure in the state, including the Government House.

“We have so much ecological issues in Akwa Ibom—gully erosions are almost consuming even the Government House.

“We embarked on a very ambitious programme to reclaim the ecological gully erosion site and turn it into a resort. Now we have what we call the Arise Resort, which I have just invited His Excellency, Mr President, to commission. We have also asked him to help us intervene,” he said.

The Governor also appealed for federal support in developing the Ibom Deep Seaport, emphasizing its strategic importance to the state, region, and nation.

“No state government can alone build a deep seaport. We need the federal government’s support, and so we have made a request to the President to help us intervene so that Akwa Ibom will have a deep seaport.

“With a depth of 17.2 meters, it is about the deepest in the country. We are already constructing a road into the seaport and providing other infrastructure, but we need the federal government to come on board,” Eno said.

The delegation, which included political leaders across party lines, traditional rulers, religious leaders, youth, and women representatives, also used the visit to express gratitude to the President for his support of Akwa Ibom indigenes in federal positions.

“Part of our visit was to thank Mr. President for standing by our son, Distinguished Senator Godswill Akpabio, as Senate President, and for appointing our sons and daughters into the federal government, principal among them being the Honourable Minister of State for Petroleum (Gas),” Eno said.

He also commended Tinubu’s economic policies, acknowledging the initial challenges but noting signs of recovery.

“When the President took over, the economy was actually down, but we have begun to see signs of recovery. We need to encourage him to continue on the path of reforms. When you encourage leaders, they do more”, he said.

The Governor emphasized the unity among Akwa Ibom leaders, stating that political differences had not hindered their collective pursuit of the state’s development.

“Today, you saw most of our past leaders—Distinguished Senator Godswill Akpabio, His Excellency Deacon Udom Emmanuel, myself, and others—working together to ensure the sustainable growth of Akwa Ibom State,” he noted.

As a mark of solidarity and appreciation, the state’s traditional rulers conferred on President Tinubu the highest chieftaincy title in the land, Otuekong, meaning “Commander-in-Chief.”

“The traditional rulers took the opportunity to honour the President with the highest title in our land, Otuekong, to show that we stand with him, we will support him in the onerous task of administering leadership in the country,” Eno said.

“This is not a war cabinet”, Eno tells newly sworn in commissioners

    …warns against political rivalry

Akwa Ibom State Governor, Umo Eno, has cautioned members of his newly appointed cabinet against engaging in political battles with stakeholders in their local government areas.

Speaking during the swearing-in ceremony for new commissioners and special advisers at the Banquet Hall of the Government House, Uyo, Eno emphasized that the administration is focused on governance, not political rivalry.

“This is not a War Cabinet but a Delivery Cabinet,” he stated. “The central and defining element of this EXCO is unity of purpose, teamwork, and positive collaborations to deliver on our campaign promises. Commit this to memory and project it in all your engagements, and you will have a smooth time as EXCO members.”

“Let me again state unambiguously that I am a man of peace and not of confrontation. I say what I mean, and I mean what I say. I do not have ‘body language.’ You must work to maintain the peace we have enjoyed here by showing utmost respect to our elders and leaders.

“You have not been appointed as Commissioners to ignite unnecessary fights with your leaders at the Local Government, State, or Federal levels. Our dream and desire is to continue keeping Akwa Ibom an oasis of peace and tranquility, where investors and tourists will continue to come, live, and thrive”.

The governor said he expects commissioners and special advisers to help him interprete the A.R.I.S.E Agenda of his administration and not use their positions to advance ethnic interests.

“To the newly sworn-in Commissioners, you have been privileged to be selected out of the 7.9 million people of this blessed State to provide service to your State.

“Let me again reemphasize that your selection was the sole prerogative of the Governor, and this was based primarily on your proven capacities and ability to get the job done—not on ethnic or primordial considerations. Your loyalty, therefore, is to the Governor and to the State.

“You are to work collaboratively to interpret and deliver on those key planks of our governance blueprint for the betterment of our people and State. Teamwork, unity, and passion are the ingredients we require from you.

“You are to look for solutions and not engage in blame games while also working to tighten weak links and encourage deeper team spirit for the overall success of the team.

“We have a blueprint, the ARISE Agenda, which in concrete and precise layers contains our dream for the development of our State. Your role, like Joseph, is to help further interpret the dream and vision by working collaboratively to prepare our State and people for years of continuous economic growth and prosperity”, he said.

  • The Umo Eno mesmerism

    The Umo Eno mesmerism

    Ray Ekpu

Most developed countries have completed their duty of providing basic amenities for their citizens. In their countries they have good roads and bridges, well-built schools and hospitals; they have an uninterrupted flow of electricity and water etc. These governments are therefore now pursuing the finer aspects of life and striving to make life more interesting, more useful, more fulfilling. They are exploring finer values such as freedom, equality of opportunities for genders and groups, activities that can promote pleasure and happiness for all including the disadvantaged members of the society, the resuscitation and refinement of long cherished values etc.

It is these activities that have made life more enjoyable for their citizens. It is also these value-adding activities that make it difficult for Nigerians who travel there for further stories to decide to stay back there and work after the completion of their studies.

The governor of Akwa Ibom State, Umo Eno has made some significant development strides within the 21 months that he has been in the saddle in the state. These strides have caught the attention of the editors of ThisDay newspaper who decorated him recently with the Governor of the Year award along with three other governors.

It is worth remarking that all organisations that give awards to people in the public sphere always do so on the basis of achievements that are measurable. This does not mean that there aren’t other achievements that can be recorded in favour of those persons.

In particular I have noted four difficult-to-measure achievements recorded in my book by the Akwa Ibom State governor. These are what I call Umo Eno’s mesmerism, a subtle means by which some leaders hypnotise their people knowingly or unknowingly.

The British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher also known as the Iron Lady used the tool of masculine femininity to win the hearts of Britons. And even when she made mistakes such as her stand on apartheid, they forgave her because she had hypnotized them. America’s president, Ronald Reagan, had the gift of oratorical eloquence and a voice that boomed like a gun. He used both to good effect and Americans fell for him. The German Chancellor Angela Merkel was in Brazil in 2014 when Germany won the World Cup. She stood there humbly in the fading sun in a nicely cut suit and warmly hugged all the sweaty young men who had brought honour to her country. They brought honour to her country. She brought honour to herself as a leader of humility. Murtala Muhammed, the Nigerian leader who overthrew General Yakubu Gowon was a leader roundly loved by most Nigerians because of his muscular activism which he displayed during the few months that he ran the affairs of Nigeria. Up till today, he remains unforgettable even though his tenure was short.

In Nigeria there is an abundance of vanity in leadership. The member of the House of Representatives who told a dispatch rider recently: Do you know who I am? epitomises that unbridled vanity. Some of our leaders may not say so openly, but they do things that indicate that they are the Lord and Master of the manor. They surround themselves with luxury items that they do not need simply to emphasise their bigmanism, their next-to-god-ism, their Almighty-ness.

Many years ago a military governor of one of the northern states arrived from abroad at the state’s airport. The Government House sent a Peugeot 504 to pick him. He refused to ride in the car until they brought a Mercedes Benz car to pick him. Vanity in leadership has not yet vanished from Nigeria.

Some years ago I went for a conference in Cape Town, South Africa. At the scheduled time, the president arrived noiselessly, promptly, accompanied by two cars only. That cannot happen in Nigeria; that does not happen in Nigeria. How will people know that power is on the road if the ground is not made to quake from the booming of the siren from multiple cars that accompany the lonely traveller who may not be as important as the booming of the siren tells us? Powerful men and women in Nigeria must exhibit bluff and bluster as evidential proof of their power and the glow of glamour that their office offers.

Apart from what Governor Eno has done on development issues in the state, there are four things he has done that impress me a great deal. One, before the 2023 governorship election in the state, there were several aspirants but when Umo Eno emerged as the candidate of the PDP, he was bombarded with a flurry of court cases. At the end of the count there were some 40- something cases against him. At the end of the day, he won all the cases, and became governor of the state. Some people expected him to swing his axe menacingly in revenge but he did not go after his opponents. As a pastor, he was probably listening to Jesus Christ who said “Forgive them for they know not what they do.” Or he was listening to the wisdom of William Shakespeare who said “The robbed that smiles steals something from the thief.” Or he was heeding the warming of the Chinese who say “Let he who seeks revenge dig two graves.” Apparently he thinks that revenge can keep your own wounds fresh and he doesn’t want that to happen to him.

Two, now he is building two bedroom bungalows, fully equipped, for the poorest of the poor in all the wards in the state. These are people who do not have people to take care of them and would have had no help if the governor did not look in their direction. I have seen pictures of some of the beneficiaries. They wear tattered clothes, look dejected and truly wretched. When presenting the completed buildings to them, the governor, beautifully attired, hugs them passionately. That is humility, the sign of being a people-centric leader, who does not mind being associated with the wretched of the earth that cross his path in the line of duty.

Three, the governor is now taking care of the senior citizens in the state. These are the people who are old and uncatered for by anybody. Their life is in the balance but the governor has come to their aid by providing them with food and money for sustenance.

I urge the Governor to send a bill to the State House of Assembly so as to legalise the decision and provide a framework for its execution. This will guarantee that it remains a noble contribution of this government to the rehabilitation of a group of people who had exerted their energy in pushing for the betterment of the society when they were young. Now that the cruel hands of age are on them, someone has provided salvation for them.

Four, Umo Eno believes in inclusive governance. Even though he is a member of the PDP, he does not mind meeting and mixing with members of the APC or LP because he is a pan-Nigerian. He invites them to his functions and he attends their own functions too. When Chief Godswill Akpabio, an APC member, was sworn in as president of the 10th Senate he was there. When Chief Don Etiebet, another APC man, marked his 80th birthday in Lagos at the Metropolitan Club, Governor Eno was there. So it can be said that Eno is a refined politician, the type of politician that is hard to find in Nigeria, a politician that has no iota of bitterness in his heart. That is one of the reasons I have enormous respect for him.

For our democracy to survive it must have enduring values. We must not make our politics a do-or-die affair. Yes, we can congratulate ourselves that we have had 25 years of uninterrupted constitutional government but the imperfections are many. We need to refine our democratic values, reduce our desperation for power and give democracy a chance to grow in the spirit of give and take.

Eno is a symbol of inclusive governance and an apostle of politics without bitterness. He does all these without any display of arrogance thus showing that there can be power without arrogance, there can be power accompanied by humility.

  • Governor of the Year: Pastor Umo Eno, a true beacon of hope in Akwa Ibom

Governor of the Year: Pastor Umo Eno, a true beacon of hope in Akwa Ibom

    • By Ubong Thompson

For as many that keenly followed the development trajectory and the human  development structure and processes ongoing in Akwa Ibom state in its entirety, it will gladen all lovers and advocates of good governance to experience, what many would call a home coming of accolade showered upon his excellency, Pastor Umo Eno, the Governor of Akwa Ibom State.

Interestingly, Pastor Umo Eno was recently honoured with the “Governor of the Year” award by ThisDay Newspapers and Arise TV. It is important to note that his accolade not only highlights his great leadership prowess but also underscores the developmental strides achieved under his administration in less than 20 months.

Like every humble and down to earth personality,  who considers and appreciates the dogged efforts of many illustrous citizens and very visionary gate keepers, pastor Umo dedicated the award to his deputy, Senator Akon Eyakenyi, all past governors of the state, and specifically to his predecessor, Udom Emmanuel. He emphasized that their collective efforts and foundational work paved the way for the state’s current progress.

As part of his acknowledgement speech, Governor Eno stated, “I promise you that we will continue to put in our effort—double and redouble our efforts—towards the development of our State.”

    SIGNIFICANCE OF THE AWARD

The “Governor of the Year” award is a testament to effective governance and impactful leadership. For Akwa Ibom State, this recognition is a clear

validation of developmental policies that have been followed through passionately. The award serves as an endorsement of the policies and initiatives implemented under Governor Eno’s leadership, reflecting their positive impact on the state’s socio-economic landscape.

    ENHANCED STATE REPUTATION

There is no gainsaying that the reputable national recognition elevates Akwa Ibom’s profile, potentially attracting investors and stakeholders interested in contributing to the state’s growth. As it stands, the ARISE AGENDA of the state governor is already enhancing a positive outlook with a breath of fresh air.

    Motivation for continued Excellence

It remains a fact that to whom much is given, much is expected. Thisday, governor of the year award and accolade to Governor Eno serves as motivation obviously for the current administration to sustain and amplify its developmental efforts, ensuring that the momentum of progress is maintained. It’s safe to say that Pasor Umo Eno is one amongst many who will do everything in his power to maintain and continue with the great work already achieved.

    With Broader Implications,

Governor Eno’s recognition, alongside other governors like Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State, Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta State, and Uba Sani of Kaduna State, highlights a collective acknowledgment of effective leadership across Nigeria, which Akwa Ibom state has proven again and again as the numero uno amongst others. Governor Umo Eno’s leadership dexterity underscores the importance of governance that prioritizes development, accountability, and the well-being of citizens.

Without sounding repetitive, i am proud to say yet again that the “Governor of the Year” award is a significant milestone for Akwa Ibom State. It reflects the cumulative efforts of past and present leadership and sets a benchmark for future governance. As the state basks in this recognition, it also faces the challenge of building upon this foundation to achieve greater heights in development and prosperity for the good of Akwa Ibomites and Nigerians in general which I am very proud to say that his excellency Governor Umo Eno is very prepared and wired to take head on over and over again.

Congratulations to you, my dear Governor, and we pray for more good tidings. Cheers.

Eno orders payment of N80,000 minimum wage to Akwa Ibom workers

Akwa Ibom state governor Umo Eno has authorised the payment of the new minimum wage of N80,000 to 45,000 duly verified civil servants in the state with effect from November 2024.

Eno gave the directive on Tuesday following the submission of the report by the committee on the Implementation of the New Minimum Wage/Personnel Verification, headed by the Head of Service, Effiong Essien.

Payment of the new minimum wage is scheduled to begin at the end of this month but backdated to November last year.

Receiving the report at Government House, Uyo, the governor thanked the Committee for the great work they did and requested the Committee to extend similar work to the retired workers Pension Schemes.

“Let me thank the Committee for taking the time to deliver on this assignment. As I receive this report today, my understanding is that before now, we had a staff strength of 55,120. Out of that, 52,177 persons turned out for the verification exercise, so we still have an outstanding of 2,943 personnel who did not show up while 6,193 have issues with their verification.

“Having received this report today, I will be signing this off to the Office of the Accountant General, Auditor General, and the Director of Budget to come up with the memo that they are ready to implement.

“For those who have been cleared—about 45,984 of them—we should be ready to pay the minimum wage at the end of this month, effective from November 1, 2024.

“The Civil Service forms a critical mass of employees in our state government. Since we came on board, their welfare has remained a key priority, and we will continue to do so. I believe this will help ameliorate the harsh economic environment we have found ourselves in, and I hope, by the grace of God, slowly, we will find our way out of it very soon.

“For the people who are yet to be verified, we will give another 30 days. After that, we will end the exercise. If they don’t show up within the time specified, we will take it that they are not civil servants, and their salaries will be stopped.

“We want to extend our hand of fellowship to the organized labour in the state and ask them to work with the government, as we all have a responsibility to Akwa Ibom State. We have done a lot to engender good government-labour relations. Since we came on board, we have paid over 47 billion in gratuities from the over 97 billion backlog we met since 2012, as well as several palliatives to the workers and people of Akwa Ibom State.”

The Governor said he has accepted the recommendation of the Committee that the verification exercise should be done on a yearly basis. “I have received your recommendation that this exercise should be done on a yearly basis, and I think we will do so.

“Another area we will run verification is the pension payments. If what we uncovered can happen with serving personnel, then you can imagine what may be happening where people have unfortunately passed and are still being paid. We need to quickly carry out the verification exercise in that area too. So I am not dissolving the Committee now; we will extend the life of the Committee for another month.”
