Sterling Bank Sketchamania grand finale rocks Unilag

Following months of scouting the nations tertiary institutions for budding designers, Sterling Bank, on Saturday, April 20, held the finale of its fashion competition, Sterling Bank Sketchamania Challenge for undergraduates.

Held at the main auditorium of the University of Lagos, Unilag, and compered by the duo of Akpororo and Deza, the event featured a high dose of comedy, music and fashion. Among the contestants were Ayodeji Balogun (Yabatech), Sipe Olanrewaju (Unilag), Stephen Wayne (Unilag), Kayode Arigbede (Unilag), Amina odey (Radford University), Anyogu Enefelicia (UNN), Aimanoshi Dania (Unilag), Kayode Durosimi-Etti, Seyi Adegoke (Unilag) as well as Yabatech’s Stavely Temidayo

With music interludes provided by the badoo himself, Olamide, Lily John and a couple of others, the competition, according to the bank’s group Head of Strategy & Communications, Shina Atilola, was held in a bid to discover and celebrate the creativity of the Nigerian youth.

“The name Sterling Bank simply symbolises excellence and standing out, so we are trying to marry this vision of being sterling with positioning our future leaders so that they can be successful. We realise that most Nigerian undergraduates have talents but there is nobody to project them forward and because of that, we are putting down a foundation to project them forward so that they can be celebrated in the future,” Atilola stated.

Designed as an annual event, he revealed that Sketchamania has already been slated to run for the next five years following which it will be reviewed. Among the judges for the competition were Uche Nnaji of Ouch Couture and female rapper cum designer, Sasha P. Following a stiff challenge which saw models trotting the runway with the sketches, now turned into outfits, Stephen Wayne emerged winner of the star prize of a million naira. Coming second and third respectively were Sipe Olanrewaju, going home with N500, 000.00 and Steavely Temidayo winning N250, 000.00.

    LG’s scholarship for students

Ten students of the University of Lagos (UNILAG) benefited from the scholarship scheme of LG Electronics in a programme recently held in the institution. Each of the beneficiary whose high Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) qualified them for the scholarship, went home with $1,500 cheque to aid their education.

During the presentation which took place in the LG Laboratory on the campus, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof Rahman Bello, said the electronics firm started the scheme four years ago to rededicate students towards excellence.

While acknowledging that education remained the bedrock of any developed economy, the VC charged the beneficiaries to make judicious use of the money and urged other students to work hard to achieve the feat.

In his speech, Managing Director, LG Electronics West African Operations, Mr Deog Jun Kim, said education is the best legacy they could inherit. Promising that the gesture would be extended to other institutions, Kim admonished students to always be hungry for knowledge to be successful after their degree programmes.

    UNILAG DLI gets e-resource room

    Uploads course content online

Students of the Distance Learning Institute (DLI) of the University of Lagos (UNILAG) no longer have to be physically present to get their study materials. This is because the institute, in partnership with Schul Portal Ltd, has uploaded their courses onto a server which can be accessed online and within the campus.

The e-resource centre, which can accommodate 300 students, was officially inaugurated by the Education Minister, Prof Ruqayyat Ahmed Rufa’i during the golden jubilee convocation of the university penultimate week.

Director of the institute, Prof Olufunke Lawal told The Nation in an interview that the project is in keeping with the dictates of Open and Distance Learning (ODL) education which provides students with resources designed to achieve self learning. In addition to getting materials online, Prof Lawal said other features of the portal include features that allow for interaction between the students and their lecturers or tutors; in-built self-assessment questions to test how well the student understands the topic he is reading; and access to other resources that would aid learning.

“There is room for assessment. There is inbuilt resource for what you call self assessment within the topics. It is student-friendly. If you are a fast learner, you can learn; if you are average, you can also learn at your own pace,” she said.

Prof Lawal also said the resource room which will ultimately accommodate 1,000 students, was designed to cater for students who do not have internet access or laptops. However, for those who with both, or and internet-active phone, she said they learn wherever they are.

In future, Prof Lawal said the institute, which has 15,000 active students hopes to compete internationally for students with open universities in the UK, Korea and other places.

Speaking further on the innovation, Managing Director of Schul Portal, Mr Julius Momoh-Ozoh said students will not experience down time using the portal because the firm has taken care of power and connectivity issues. He added that apart from the 300 students that can be accommodated in the e-resource, another 200 students located within the institute, can still connect to the server on their laptops without internet access through an intranet created for the purpose.

“Power is not an issue. There is a high-powered 40 KVA inverter that can power the server for over 40 hours so that if any student comes he can be connected. The issue of connectivity is also taken care of. Students can have direct link to the server through the internet,” he said.

For now, only 100 and 200-Level students have their course materials online.

  • UNILAG should watch out, if not…

Aare Afe Babalola has cautioned the University of Lagos (UNILAG) to work hard to achieve its mission to be named among the best 100 in the world or risk being overtaken by the Afe Babalola University, Ado-Ekiti (ABUAD), the university he founded, in the nearest future.

Speaking after he was conferred with the Doctor of Law (honoris causa) last Friday, Babalola said it was one of his missions as Pro-Chancellor of the university between 2001 and 2008.

He urged the Vice-Chancellor of the university, Prof Rahamon Bello to build on his efforts as Pro-Chancellor to raise funds for the institution to improve the academic environment and research.

“When I was here I built an auditorium and called my friends to donate money. You have to continue with my drive to raise funds for the university if not ABUAD will overtake you to be among the best 100 in the world,” he said.

As Pro-Chancellor, Babalola used to donate his sitting allowances to the university endowment fund which he started.

At the event, Babalola also announced the endowment of N10 million to be used to award scholarships worth N500,000 each to a worker and student who shows leadership traits annually.

He said: “I want to reiterate my commitment to the development of this university. In the first term of my tenure, I ordered that all my allowances should be paid into an account maintained by the university. The money was in the first term turned over to Endowment Fund. All my allowances for the second term still remain in that account, I understand that they still have about N3million in the account. I intend to issue a cheque of N10 million to include the N3 million, which is in the account to be paid to Stanbic Bank in the name of Afe Babalola Endowment Fund for the University of Lagos in perpetuity.

“The capital of N10 million will yield interest of more than N1million only. This amount of N1million accruing from the interest should be utilised as follows: (a) The sum of N500,000 as award to the best staff whether academic or non-academic who has shown great leadership traits in the discharge of his duties;(b) The sum of N500,000 as award to the best student whether undergraduate or postgraduate who has shown great leadership traits in his relations with other students and or in his interactions and relationships with the university community as a whole.”

  • UNILAG shines at 50

    UNILAG shines at 50

Accolades won by the university are well deserved, but there is room for improvement

his year’s convocation of the University of Lagos is, in a way, the climax of the celebration of the institution’s 50th anniversary that started last year. Indeed, for the university, there is cause to celebrate its unique place among higher institutions in the country. It was the first federal university established after independence. The older university established in Ibadan in 1948 was, at the time, a college of the University of London.

The establishment of universities in Ile-Ife, Zaria, Nsukka and Lagos brightened the hope of Nigerians that the post-colonial years would boost development in the country. Of the four, the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, University of Ife and the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, were established by the Northern, Western and Eastern regional governments. Only the University of Lagos was funded from the federal purse, as a symbol of nationhood and meant to cement the unity expected to come with the 1960 independence.

Following the recommendations of the Ashby Commission set up in 1959, it was recommended that a university be established in Lagos “to offer day and evening courses in Commerce, Business Administration, Economics and Higher Management Studies.” The commission equally recommended that the university could be non-residential. However, a UNESCO Advisory Commission set up a year later advised against making the university non-residential. Rather, it called on the Federal Government to make the university complete and all-encompassing.

Consequently, the University of Lagos, fully residential and autonomous, came into being on October 22, 1962, with Professor Eni Njoku as the first vice-chancellor. It was a dream come true and it provided a rare opportunity of providing quality higher education for all Nigerians.

The late vice-chancellor of the university, Professor Adetokunbo Shofoluwe, at a pre-celebration world press conference on May 8, last year, captured its objectives: “From my vantage point, the future looks beautiful, full of promise and myriads of opportunities. I see a future of outstanding excellence in the quality of staff and of course as a consequence, of students. I see a future of trail-blazing collaboration between the academia of this university and the budding industry in Nigeria … I see UNILAG joining the league of the best 100 universities in the world.” That represented the resolve of the university community when it turned 50 last year.

In recent times, the university has won laurels and awards. Recently, it topped the list of the best doctoral theses produced by Nigerian universities. The result of the exercise carried out by the Nigerian Universities Doctoral Theses Awards Scheme ((NUDTAS) adjudged four of the doctoral candidates presented by the university as the best. In 2010, the National Centre for Energy Efficiency and Conservation was established as a testament to its standing as a great centre for science research. In the same year, the last accreditation visit to the university by the National Universities Commission approved all courses run by the departments, faculties, schools, colleges and centres of the institution.

The steady progress made by the university was made possible by the minimal disruption of the academic calendar by industrial disputes and students’ protests. This is an attestation to the maturity of the management and a budding culture of peace on the campus.

The support drawn from firms, wealthy individuals and institutions is second to none in the country. Last year, the university’s Office of Advancement acknowledged 179 such partners.

We salute the university for its steady progress and contributions to national development. We identify with its resolve to make its mark among the best centres of academic excellence in the world and urge its management to remain faithful to the goal set by successive leaders of the institution. This has already resulted in UNILAG being the university of first choice for young Nigerians who seek admission every year.

We hope that, by the time the university would be celebrating its diamond jubilee in 2022, it would have improved upon its ranking, not only in Africa, but globally.

  • UNILAG VC optimistic about name change

UNILAG VC optimistic about name change

    •Graduates 6,932 students

Vice-Chancellor of the University of Lagos (UNILAG), Prof Rahamon Bello has said he is optimistic that the university would retain its name.

Addressing journalists at a press briefing held in the Senate Chambers on Monday ahead of next week’s golden jubilee convocation, Bello also assured graduating students that their certificates would bear the old name.

He said: “Even if the university name will change it cannot be retroactive. Those who are graduating now will have UNILAG on their certificates. It will only take effect on those who will be admitted under the new university name. But God forbid that the name will be changed. UNILAG name is not changing because I have it on authority in black and white from the Federal Ministry of Education that UNILAG’s name will remain UNILAG’s name until an amendment to the Act establishing the university. And by the grace of God, UNILAG will remain UNILAG. A fifty-year old man cannot change his name.

“Mr President in his wisdom much earlier on had said he would allow the law to take its course and the name can only be changed by the National Assembly. And we will be at all the hearings concerning the change and we will give reasons why we don’t want the name change and I am sure that the National Assembly will support us.”

President Goodluck Jonathan had announced a new name for the university (Moshood Abiola University of Lagos, MAULAG) during his last Democracy Day address. However, his decision was challenged by the alumni association of the university in the court of law which ruled that the status quo should remain until the Act establishing the university is amended.

The procedure for amendment has already been sent to the National Assembly and has passed the second reading.

Giving details about the convocation, Bello said 6,932 students will be awarded diplomas, certificates, degrees and higher degrees on Wednesday February 6 and 7.

Of the 3,664 undergraduates from the 11 faculties and the Distance Learning Institute, Prof Bello said 91 students are graduating with First Class degrees – with the top three being women.

In the postgraduate category, 38 will earn Postgraduate Diplomas (PGD), 3,182 Masters Degree, one Master of Philosophy and 47 Doctor of Philosophy.

Meanwhile, the university will also award honorary degrees to four dignitaries on Februart 8. They are Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa, Late Prime Minister of Nigeria; Chief Arthur Christopher Mbanefo, Pro-Chancellor and Governing Council of the university (1984-1985); and Chief Afe Babalola, Pro-Chancellor and Governing Council of the university (2001-2008).

Speaking about the convocation programme, Bello said the convocation lecture would be delivered by Prof Munzali Jubril on February 5 after his (Bello’s) investiture as Vice-Chancellor. Award of degrees, diplomas to graduands of faculties of Arts, Business Administration, Education, Engineering, Environmental Sciences, Science, Social Sciences and Distance Learning Institute will take place on February 6, while those of the college of medicine, faculties of Business Administration, Engineering, Law, Pharmacy and School of Postgraduate Studies will hold February 7.

Six professors will be appointed emeriti professors on February 8. They are: Prof Yetunde Mercy Olumide, retired professor of medicine; Prof V.O.S. Olunloyo, Professor of Systems engineering; Prof A.A. Susu, Professor of Chemical Engineering, Prof I.A Adalemo, Prof of Geography; Prof P.O. Adeniyi, Professor of Geography; and Prof L. Oyebande, Professor of Geography.

  • ‘Why UNILAG convocation was postponed’

    ‘Why UNILAG convocation was postponed’

University of Lagos (UNILAG) Vice-Chancellor, Prof Rahamon Bello, has denied claims that the institution’s convocation, traditionally held in January, was postponed because of the change of name controversy.

Clarifying issues at a briefing on Monday to announce the new dates of the convocation now holding February 5-8, Bello said the university did not meet all the conditions stipulated by the Federal Ministry of Education (FME), Abuja, for approval to hold the convocation resulting in its postponement.

“Normally UNILAG convocation holds mid-January. There are conditions laid before you can go and announce your convocation. You must give adequate notice, a minimum of eight weeks; the speech for Visitor must be ready; your certificates must be ready. Unfortunately this year by the time we put our information to the Visitor for approval, we were short of time. We had not got the approval before we fixed a date,” he said.

A national daily (not The Nation) had reported that the convocation was postponed because President Goodluck Jonathan was insisting that the university adopt the new name (Moshood Abiola University of Lagos, MAULAG) he announced during his last Democracy Day address.

The President’s decision was challenged by the alumni association of the university in the court of law which ruled that the status quo should remain until the Act establishing the university is amended.

The procedure for amendment has already been sent to the National Assembly and has passed the second reading.

Prof Bello said he was confident the name will not be changed and assured graduating students that their certificates would bear the old name.

  • UNILAG medical college seeks GTBank’s support for facility upgrade

The College of Medicine, University of Lagos (CMUL) is seeking support to revamp its facilities to match the best in the world.

As it recognised GTbank for excellence in Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programmes in health and education in commemoration of its 50th anniversary last week, the Provost, Prof Folashade Ogunsola said the college would like to partner with the bank to reinvent the good old days when its facilities were in top shape.

The bank’s interventions in Health include the rehabilitation of Mercy Children’s hospital and provision and regular maintenance of equipment; organisation of an annual autism conference to create awareness about the condition; support for the Sickle Cell Foundation as well as the ‘stop cancer’ initiative.

In the area of education, the bank has adopted schools in Lagos, Kwara, Jigawa and others, sponsored the Lagos State Principals Cup among others.

Presenting the award to Mr Babajide Sipe of the Corporate Communications and External Affairs Unit at a brief ceremony held in the CMUL board room, Prof Ogunsola said the college had followed the bank’s progress in the financial sector and its activities in the area of education and health and found it deserving of the award.

Considering the importance of producing well trained healthcare personnel to serve in hospitals, Prof Ogunsola said the college, whose student population has grown from 28 to 1,800 in 50 years, seeks to improve its facilities to deliver its already reviewed curriculum.

She said: “The College of Medicine has in the last few years been reworking its curriculum and making it more impactful so that the society would feel more of our impact. And for us to get there, we need to have our strategic partners who would work along with us as build better infrastructure, better curriculum and produce even greater doctors. The facilities here need to be improved. To do that, it takes commitment, it takes money, it takes those who would give us ideas and work with the ideas.”

Responding on behalf of GTbank, Sipe appreciated the college for the honour and assured its management of the bank’s support when such initiative is worked out.

“The College of Medicine is certainly another good platform and we would be committed to do our bit. We do not know what ideas you want to implement for now but we would be happy to be part of this tremendous effort to improve standards in this institution,” he said.
