Four photographers hold exhibition at UNILAG

Four award-winning photographers have held a group exhibition of contemporary fine art entitled: Playful Perspective at the MadHouse Gallery, University of Lagos (UNILAG).

They are: Olusolape Awe, Awoyomi Ayodeji, Sulaiman Abubakar Sulaiman and Rahimat Onize Shaibu.

The event anchored by Oyomi Arts featured five arworks per artist.

The curator, Awoyomi, said: “In a world often defined by seriousness and constraint, my photography seeks to liberate the imagination through a playful perspective. By capturing ordinary objects and scenes in unexpected ways, I invite viewers to reconsider their own perceptions and find joy in the unexpected.

“Through the use of unusual angles, creative compositions and a touch of humour, I aim to challenge conventional notions of beauty and aesthetics,” adding that his photos are a celebration of the  human spirit’s ability to find wonder and delight in the most ordinary of circumstances.

Sola, also a lawyer, said he delved into photography in 2019. He said passion drove him into photography, when he was at the Law School in Kano. He tells stories through the mixed media. One of his works on display is, |”No Mala”, a series of fine art photographs, which utilises the captivating patterns created by linear glass prisms to explore the unhidden depths of human identity. “No Mala”, which means “No Evil” is a visual exploration of superficial human physical features through unconventional naturally occurring means”.

Abubakar explained that a photo, which shows a man carrying a load of basket on her shoulder, shows how we struggle through life to fend for our families. “It shows what men go through,” he further said.

The other works are “Graceful Balance: A tribute to tradition”; “The Joint Hands”, “The Infinite Journey”, “Language of Souls”, and The Hooded Figure (“Intitulada”). “The Joint Hands” is a photo of some men holding hands which shows that there is strength in unity. “I strive to make people happy and how they can be of benefit to each other,” the artist said.

Rahimat, the only female artist among the exhibitors, had “Faces of Me” as one of her works. She said through them, she aims ”to inspire viewers to see beyond the surface, to celebrate the extraordinary and to honour the unseen talents that make our world more vibrant and diverse”. She also said “her selective use of colours stands for the talents that stand out even when surrounded by a world that can feel overwhelmingly grey. It is a statement about the power of creativity to shine through demanding appreciation and acknowledgement, even in the most muted environments”.

Awoyomi advised young artists to get their acts right whether in photography or elsewhere. “No matter the challenges, create something,” he advised, adding: “What you create today, may have a telling effect in generations to come. When you dream it, you act on it. We are from Nigeria. Today, we are in the United Kingdom’ from where we  exhibit in Nigeria.”

A visitor at the exhibition, Mr. Jaboda Emmanuel, an artist, praised Awoyomi. “The works are motivating. I would like to take photographs like these. Like that one, ‘Bashorun’, which shows that women have leaders who they respect. The photo is good; it depicts life. They are amazing prints; so far, so good. I will exhibit my photos some day,” he pledged.

Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC) has cut power to the University of Lagos (UNILAG) due to alleged unpaid electricity bills.

The university management announced the disconnection in a statement on Wednesday.

UNILAG has been struggling with increasing electricity costs, which worsened when EKEDC upgraded the university’s tariff from “Band B” to “Band A.”

This tariff change caused the monthly electricity bill to surge from between N150 million and N180 million to nearly N300 million, marking a 100% increase.

The management explained that despite ongoing negotiations with EKEDC and a recent payment of N180 million on August 20, the university was abruptly disconnected from the power supply on August 27 without prior notice.

UNILAG ‘84 set lifts Mass Comm dept with internet facility

University of Lagos (UNILAG) 1984 Mass Communication old students have done an internet connectivity upgrade to facilitate learning and boost capacity development, as the department has got approval to become a faculty in October.

The intervention is to celebrate their 40th anniversary.

Speaking at the event attended by old students, President of the 1984 set, Olorogun Fred Ohwahwa, said despite the challenge of financing, the set was successful through its unrelenting efforts.

He said the friendship created since their time at the university made it easy to unite and deliver the project, ‘’to ensure the department maintains its high standard.’’

“We agreed that when we were 40 years, we would make an intervention for the department. We asked the department to give us options of what we could do. So, they gave us about two options, so we keyed into this one. The HOD also preferred what we did. So, we chose this internet connectivity upgrade, which we are inaugurating today.

‘’When we were in school, we were like a family. We created friendship and we still continue and it made it easy to come together. The project is expected to facilitate learning. It is to boost capacity development,” Ohwahwa said.

President of UNILAG Mass Communication Alumni Association (UMCAA), Mr. Adewale Williams, stressed the need for other sets to key into the initiative and give back to their alma mater.

He hailed the 1984 set for the gesture and their previous programmes aimed at developing the department.

He described the UMCAA as one of the most active associations in the university, stressing that it was committed to the all-round advancement of the department, which would become a faculty in October.

The UMCAA president urged students to avoid bearing grudges when they graduate and cultivate the habit of showing gratitude to their alma mater by giving back in any way they deem fit.

He challenged other to sets in other departments to emulate the 1984 set.

“About three or four years ago, this same set equipped one of our classrooms. At their 40th anniversary this year, they are doing this. The key thing you need to understand is, we decided to come back to the department to give back. This is a lesson for all of you. Many of you students may finish and decide not to give back. We have been giving back. Our department had problem getting everyone, because you would hear that when we were here, this lecturer did this to me and all that. But the most important thing is that we graduated and are making a living. So it is important to give back. Some students join alumni of foreign universities such as Harvard and neglect the local one, it should not be.

“We are more active than the school’s alumni association. A lot of them don’t come back. By October, there is a big celebration where our department will become a faculty. We should have got this some 10 years ago. With what this set has done, others will want to come back and ensure our faculty becomes a success,” he said.

A former president of UMCAA, Mr. Vincent Oyo, said efforts to maintain standards in the department have continued.

According to him, the facility will ensure the department remains a standard in Nigeria.

He urged students to utilise it maximally because they don’t have to pay for internet services anymore.

Lekan Sote, a columnist with The Punch Newspapers, and a member of the 1978 Mass Communication set, urged students to be part of the alumni to network and utilise opportunities on offer.

Associate Prof. Popoola Ibitayo, who spoke on behalf of the Head of Department, Prof. Oloruntola Sunday, expressed delight and thanked the 1984 set for the gesture.

“We are happy. The students too are happy. We are hoping to tap from you as the faculty takes off in October,” he said.
