  • UNIUYO admits 10, 926

The University of Uyo (UNIUYO) has admitted 10, 926 freshers for the 2016/2017 academic session.

Its Vice Chancellor, Prof Enefiok Essien, said this during the 24th matriculation of the institution in Uyo, the Akwa Ibom State capital.

Essien charged the new students to be studious and shun all anti-social activities.

He said: “I encourage you to remain positively adventurous throughout your university experience. More importantly, from this moment on, you will shed most of your childish nuances and youthful exuberances and devote your time and energy to your studies.

“What this means is that you must have the right priorities, with your education at the very top. Remember that there will be no bell to ring, no parent to wake you up from bed or monitor your movement. What you need is to be disciplined enough to get prepared for your lectures and other positive social activities on time.”

The VC advised the new intakes to utilise the formal channels of complaints if they have grievances.

He explained that the university had put in place dedicated faculty members – staff advisers, counselors, administrative and technical staff – to facilitate good teaching and learning.

He paraded some students excelling in their academics to challenge the freshers to work hard.

He said: “Today, we have selected 24 students out of a lot others on the University Honours Roll. These are students who have a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 4.5 and above.

“It is our expectation that this will motivate you to study hard so that you would also be honoured in this manner in subsequent matriculation ceremonies.

“Academic work requires peace and order. Crisis leads to loss in property, time and even life; you should know that crisis may keep you on the programme longer than necessary. So, be mindful of what you do. Make sure you individually and collectively pursue peace, harmony and order, so that your academic work can proceed smoothly and you graduate on time.”

Essien reminded the new students that degrees are awarded only to deserving students found worthy in learning and character.

Ripples over death of guard at UniUyo

The death of a security guard attached to the home of the Chief Medical Director (CMD), University of Uyo Teaching Hospital (UUTH), Prof. Etete Peters, is causing ripples.

The security guard, simply identified as Mr. Isong, was said to have been attacked by a dog when he reported for duty last week.

A security guard, who did not want his name in print, said Isong was still coping with the dog bite until last Sunday morning when he was found struggling on the ground, with saliva rushing from his mouth.

His words: “We reported the dog bite to the CMD but he did nothing about it. Mr. Isong was quite helpless because we have not been paid for five months. On Sunday morning, he reported for duty, but when we turned behind the building, we saw him struggling on the ground with saliva gushing from his mouth, we rushed him to the hospital, but unfortunately he died.

“Life has been generally very hard with some of us who are working with the CMD. They keep giving very delicious meals to these wild dogs, but we humans are denied the opportunity of a comfortable life. How do you survive when you are being owed by a man who is not poor?”

But the CMD denied the allegation.

He said the news that one of his employees died as a result of dog bite is not true.

He explained that there was an incident of one of his security guards bitten by a dog three months ago, adding that the guard was well-treated and taken care of.

He said: “The story is false. We do not owe our staff. The security man in question is not our employee; he was a contract staff from a security firm.

“We have actually received report that a guard slumped and died. Any dog bite related issue does not last more than 10 days. The incident occurred three months ago, and the victim was well treated and taken care of by the hospital.”

It was gathered that Isong’s clansmen and family, who were not happy about the death of their son, blocked all entrances leading in and out of the UUTH, alleging that the CMD denied them the opportunity to see their son in the mortuary.

One of the relations, Mr. Ime Ekong, who spoke with The Nation, said: “We wouldn’t expect him to personally treat our son, why did he not at least pay his salaries? Then the young man would have been able to take care of himself. He killed him out of wickedness.”

Ekong said that the CMD invited men of the Quick Response Squad to the hospital, who shot sporadically into the air to disperse the protesting Isong’s relations.

Appreciating God for His mercies, Prof Ekpo, said the agony the college faced during its embryonic years was over.

“Now the road is smoother, we can now know when the next set would graduate, all things being equal.  We thank God for not allowing any death to be recorded in the last 14 years,” he said.

The Provost thanked the MDCN for its understanding regarding the development of the Medical School.

Registrar of the MDCN, Dr. Abdulmumini Ibrahim, promised to look into the requests.

In her address, Vice Chancellor (VC), Prof Comfort Ekpo said she hosted the first oath-taking on December 8, 2011 and within five years as VC, graduated 172 doctors trained in eight batches.

She noted that all academic programmes run by the college had full or interim accreditation from the National Universities Commission (NUC) and the MDCN.

She attributed the successes of the college to what she called the “good foundation laid by committed medical elders and fathers of Medical School” to whom she remains very grateful.

She thanked workers of the college for fully utilising the improved facilities to achieve the desired results.

To help indigent students, the Vice Chancellor mentioned that the university has established a Student Welfare Scheme code named ‘Hope Scheme’ which provides financial support to them. She said it has helped some of the new doctors to complete their studies.

She appealed to Nigerians home and abroad to invest in research by instituting chairs and foundations on health care.

Professor of Paediatrics, Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, Department of Paediatrics, University of Illorin Teaching Hospital, Olugbenga Mokuolu, FWACP, delivered the keynote titled: “The oath and the coat.”

‘Save us’, UNIUYO Law graduate, 71 others cry to NYSC DG

Law graduate from the University of Uyo, Mr Ede, Joshua Oritsegbemi,  and 71 other graduates of the university have appealed to the Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brig-General Johnson Olawumi, to prevail on the NYSC website manager, Sidmach Technology Limited, NYSC National Head of ICT and other concerned authorities, to correct the anomalies in their records  to enable them register and be mobilised for the Batch A  2015 service commencing in May.

A visibly worried Ede with Matriculation number: 08/LA/870 who visited The Nation’s Office in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, said he resorted to the media after several correspondences to UNIUYO and the NYSC did not yield any result to make the latter correct a minor error in his JAMB registration number.

He said: “I am a victim of wrong JAMB registration number, which is (82946368CC). This has hindered me from registration, which lasted between March 2 and April 4, 2015. My correct JAMB registration number which is 82946568CC, has been forwarded by my university’s mobilisation officer and NYSC Akwa Ibom State Head of ICT to NYSC National Head Office in Abuja severally, but to no avail.”

Ede said the error was not from him and without it being resolved, his hope of being mobilised in May would be dashed.

He further explained that despite being discovered early enough within the original registration time frame, the error was not corrected.

In a second letter sent to the NYSC DG last week, titled: “A letter of complaint associated with non mobilisation of University of Uyo graduates for 2015 Batch A NYSC service year”, Ede said he and 71 other UNIUYO graduates were properly mobilised with other graduates by the university for 2015 Batch A NYSC service year, but were rejected by NYSC because of JAMB registration number.

He said on NYSC request, the UNIUYO mobilisation officer resent the names of the affected graduates to NYSC on March 3, 6 and 30, but NYSC has still refused to effect the correction which will enable them on the NYSC registrar website.

Ede said he learnt that graduates from the University of Nigeria Nsukka (UNN), Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, Abia State and some other schools, who had similar problems had been cleared wondering why UNIUYO graduates should be treated differently.

He appealed to the NYSC DG to extend the time for the online registration “to allow the affected graduates register or create a stream or slot 2 Batch A 2015 as was done in 2014 Batches B and C’’.

Ede said since the problems associated with online registration for Batch A 2015 corps members were numerous, a second stream, if floated, can cater for the online registration victims and go a long way to reduce the numbers of prospective Batch B Corps members since 2015 will have only two batches.

  • Don makes case for funding of religion

A Professor of Sociology of Religion in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology, University of Uyo (UNIUYO), Professor John Umoh, has called on government to fund religion just like other sector.

This, he said, is because of the numerous benefits religion offers to individuals and community.

Umoh spoke as the inaugural lecturer at the UNIUYO 42nd inaugural lecture titled “Reaping the earthly dividends before the heavenly rewards: The civic( socio- economic and political) dimension of the religious institution”.

He lamented that too much attention has been given to science whereas religion holds most of the answers to man’s problems.

Citing current instances like the missing Malaysian aircraft and the kidnapped Chibok girls, Umoh said in such matters beyond scientific capacities, religion should be explored.

“Religion begins where science ends,” he stressed.

    Aside from the

He said alongside the metaphysical benefits associated with it, religion reduces frustration and difficulties in the social scene.

Religious structures like churches, Mosques, synagogues, temples, shrines where they apply, enhances the promotion of social, economic and political values of and welfare, he added.

“Religion creates and reinforces the collective conscience, creates a bond of unity among the members of the society.

“The force or strength of religion has been instrumental in facilitating social change in the society,” Umoh stated.

He said religious institutions have done so much for both man and community in terms of provision of training institutions, health care, employment and guaranteeing peace among others.

•Arrest two over IEDs at UNIUYO

The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has foiled an attempt by armed robbers to attack a branch of the Union Bank of Nigeria in Okobo, it was learnt yesterday.

The State’s Police Commissioner, Gabriel Achong, disclosed this during an interaction with newsmen in Uyo, the state capital.

Achong said the hoodlums who invaded the bank attempted to blow off part of the banking hall and the Automated Teller Machine (ATM) at the bank with dynamite.

Items recovered from the hoodlums, according to the police boss include one locally made pistol, N30,000 fake Nigerian currency, N8.9million released to the company on bond, two cartridges, a Nissan Sunny Saloon car with Reg. No. FST 813 BS and Audi 80 vehicle with Reg. No. AKP 249 AA.

The CP also said the command has arrested two persons in connection with the improvised explosive devices (IEDs) found at the premises of the University of Uyo (UNIUYO) earlier this week.

Achong pointed out that one of the persons arrested, Kufreobong Anwana, 18, was an undergraduate in the University.

The Police boss said: “Regarding the incident in UNIUYO earlier this week two persons have already been arrested. One of the arrested persons is a student of the University. Two of them are also from Akwa Ibom State.”

Achong assured that the police would soon bring the pirates to book.

His words: “We are closing in on the pirates that attacked that police marine base and I assure you that before the end of this month the hoodlums will be arrested and brought to book.”

The commissioner, who assumed duties last week as the 19th police commissioner in the state, expressed the readiness of officers and men of the police in the area to ensure hitch free elections in the state.
