Imo state governor, Hope Uzodimma, has reassured that his government will do everything within its powers to allow the Imo State University (IMSU) to stand on its own, “if possible be completely autonomous.”

The governor spoke at the maiden interactive session as the visitor to the university, at its auditorium, on Monday night where the management, staff, and students not only adopted Governor Uzodimma as their candidate for the November 11, governorship election but promised to work for his re-election.

The governor said the visit was to interact with the staff, management, and students on the way forward and to encourage members of the University community to be the best they can, including working to be on their own

He said: “To bring our people out from the old order, we need courage and creative thinkers that can come from Imo Tertiary Institutions, hence the need to have appropriate mindset and sincerity of purpose in all we do. One is only a hero when society says so. If Imo State University is strong, Imo State is strong.”

The governor said that he is interested in value addition in the State through merit, saying, “I am a slave to merit.”

He enjoined the University Community to allow people to vote their consciences in the upcoming Governorship election not minding that they adopted him as their sole candidate.

Governor Uzodimma urged the students, the staff, and management to see him and the 3R government as partners.

He pleaded with the students to acquire knowledge and skills and appealed to the youths in particular who are in the bush to come out and embrace counselling, rehabilitation, and empowerment so as to become useful citizens of the State, noting that “the earlier they begin to be focused, the better for them.”

In a welcome address, the Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof. U. U. Chukwumaeze, welcomed and thanked the Governor for not only being a Visitor to the University but also a father and friend.

He enumerated all the “firsts” the governor is associated with in the University and Imo State in general including the maintenance of three universities, the highest donor to IMSU Library, the only Visitor to clear an eight-year backlog of convocation in Imo State University, and the first Visitor to give automatic employment to best graduating students of the university.

The Vice-Chancellor inferred that the University Community will vote for the Governor in the November 11, governorship election as a show of appreciation to the man who has assisted them in recovering their lost accreditations, paid their salaries when due, and even paid them a 13th-month salary every Christmas.

Prof. Chukwumaeze recalled how the Governor magnanimously paid salaries of IMSU lecturers even when they were on strike, gave them palliative to cushion the effect of the petroleum subsidy, and assisted them in sponsoring the staff and management at workshops and conferences both within and outside Nigeria.

He said more than 200 academic staff and non-academic staff had benefitted from the workshops and conferences.

The Imo state commissioner for education, Prof. Johncliff Nwadike in his remarks thanked the Governor for coming on the visit which he said was a show of special love for the University.

He thanked the governor especially for paying the University’s staff salary arrears of February 2020 which was owed them for a long time.

He challenged the University Community to remember that to whom much is given much is expected, saying that “it doesn’t make sense to change a winning team.”

Passing a vote of confidence in the governor and asking the University community if they agree that the Visitor has acquitted himself creditably there was a resounding yes that filled the university auditorium.

Thereafter, there was an interactive session where the governor fielded questions from the students and the lecturers on areas of concern.

The Student Union Government (SUG) of the University also gave the governor an award during the occasion.

Imo election: Litmus test for Uzodimma

Several factors would determine the outcome of Saturday’s governorship election in Imo State. Governor Hope Uzodimma, who is seeking a second term on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC), remains the candidate to beat for many reasons. But, he has to contend with factors such as the insecurity in the state, the clamour for power shift or zoning and the growing popularity of the opposition parties. Correspondent CHRIS NJOKU reports.

Saturday’s governorship election in Imo State is expected to be a keenly contested one. All eyes are on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to conduct the election in a manner to achieve transparency and restore the confidence of the people in the electoral process. Against the background of INEC’s conduct during the just concluded general election, there are question marks over the capacity of the electoral umpire to achieve transparency.

The commission has however assured that it has concluded all processes that will enable it to conduct a free, fair, transparent and credible election. The commission said about 2.3 million people have collected their permanent voters card (PVC); out of the 2. 42 million registered voters.

Elections will take place in 4,720 polling units out of the total number of 4,758 polling units, according to the commission. It added that there will be no elections in 38 polling units where voter registration did not take place due to insecurity. So far, INEC has concluded 11 activities out of the 13 on their programme. The two outstanding activities are the last day of the campaign and the election itself.

Eighteen candidates have been cleared to contest the election. The prominent ones are the incumbent Governor Hope Uzodimma of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Senator Samuel Anyanwu of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), and Senator Athan Achonu of the Labour Party (LP).

The forthcoming off-cycle governorship election has put Imo State in the spotlight.  Some of the issues that will determine the outcome of the election are personalities, power of incumbency, strength of the political parties, insecurity, voter participation and zoning.

    Personality:

Personality may well be one of the biggest factors that would determine the outcome of the election. It is important, given that Imo voters have emphasised during this election cycle that they want candidates who are perceived as honest, caring, and competent.

    Uzodimma:

Governor Uzodimma’s performance in office in the last three and half years, particularly in the area of road construction and his campaign strategy are key factors in the election.

    Anyanwu:

Senator Anyanwu is also the PDP national secretary. His popularity and some of his campaign promises, such as that of revamping the healthcare system by providing adequate facilities and equipment, as well as training and retraining of healthcare workers could also be pivotal in determining the outcome of the election.

    Achonu:

The LP candidate’s popularity and some of his campaign promises, such as conducting local government elections within six and the idea of 45 per cent inclusion of women in his government could be an advantage in the contest.

    Power of incumbency:

The biggest factor that may propel Governor Uzodimma’s re-election is his power of incumbency. The power of incumbency is a big factor in elections in this clime. This is such that it will take a lot for a candidate of an opposition party to unseat a sitting governor in Nigeria.

The ruling APC is well entrenched in the nooks and crannies of Omo State; it controls 25 out of the 27 local governments.

    Strength of the parties:

The three major parties in the election have suffered setbacks due to intrigues and internal party crises. Imo State has a history of political campaigns that have been characterized by intrigues and internal crises within political parties. Disputes or lack of it within the major parties in this contest can, therefore, be one of the biggest factors that could determine the outcome of the election. This includes disagreements over candidate selection, party leadership, and policy positions.

The majority of the parties in the race have been weakened by crises emanating from their governorship primaries because of a lack of ability to manage such internal conflicts effectively. This is likely to impact strongly on the outcome of the election.

    Voter participation:

The number of voters that turn out to vote on election day usually determines the outcome of an election. In this particular case, Imo has a history of voter apathy. A civil society organization, Yiaga Africa, recently observed that some parts of the state, including Orlu, Orsu, Ehime Mbano, Oru East, Oru West and Okigwe Local Government Areas are particularly noted for voter apathy.

This is because they are prone to violence as a result of security challenges in the state. In some cases, violence and insecurity can prevent people from voting. In others, people can be intimidated into voting for a candidate against their wishes. So, the insecurity in the state could adversely affect the conduct of the election.

Imo State has been a battleground in recent times, with both the ruling and the opposition parties winning and losing interchangeably in different elections.

    Zoning:

The raging debate on zoning is another crucial factor that may affect the outcome of Saturday’s election in Imo State. It is centred around which senatorial district should produce the next governor. There has been a clamour by political leaders for the governorship position to be zoned to the Imo East Senatorial District this time around. But, it remains a contentious issue because there are disagreements among political stakeholders over which zone should produce the next governor.

The Imo Charter of Equity, which was initiated in 1999 and truncated in 2011 is meant to clear the path for a smooth transfer and rotation of the office of governor between the three senatorial zones of Okigwe, Orlu, and Owerri. But, it has not. The stakeholders of the Owerri Senatorial District, for instance, have rejected the new charter, alleging that it was being foisted on the state by the incumbent governor who hails from the Orlu zone that has produced the governor in the last 20 years. They argue that Okigwe has tasted the seat for four years while Owerri zone has only occupied the seat for seven months.

Uzodimma has challenged the leaders of Owerri zone to unite and forge a common front to enable them to succeed him. He has pledged to implement the Imo Charter of Equity after his second term. As a result, he has enjoined them to back him to secure his second term. Some analysts believe that the endorsement the governor has received from the Owerri zone may swing the pendulum in his favour. So, the zoning debate may play a significant role in the election, as people may turn out to be either for or against the incumbent governor.

Overall, Saturday’s governorship election is likely to be shaped by a range of other factors, including those related to security, the economy, and infrastructure. The incumbent governor’s record on these issues is likely to tip the scale in his favour.

“Imo owes him a lot. His memory of social outings; memory of how he lifted the state will remain. Those he appointed became rich, and he was almost impoverished. I am sure the Almighty God is rewarding him wherever he is.”

The governor recalled that one of the greatest challenges that the late Mbakwe had when he governed the state was filling the state as a sub -national which was defeated by ear.

Speaking, the son of the late Mbakwe, Alex, said the foundation found Uzodimma fit to receive the award and investiture, noting that he had ruled the state meticulously well with prudence in resources available to him. He urged the electorate to return Uzodimma for another four – year tenure.

Imo guber race: Poll tips Uzodimma for victory

Ahead of the November 11 Imo state governorship election, a scientific independent opinion poll conducted by a pro-democracy civil society group, Justice and Democracy for Development (JD4D) has predicted Governor Hope Uzodimma to emerge victorious.

A report released by the CSO in Abuja on Friday, November 3, showed that the outcome of the poll was a product of random sampling and in-depth interviews conducted across the 27 local government areas of the state.

The report of the sampling showed that the All Progressives Congress (APC) standard bearer, who is on his second term bid is on the comfortable lead of 70 percent of respondents ahead of his two closest rivals.

According to the report, “The APC is trailed by the Labour Party (LP) with 18 percent chances while the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) came third with 13 percent.

“Three percent of the respondents said they were yet to decide on their choice. Two percent said they would not vote while 1 percent of the respondents declined to disclose their choice.

“Chances of the APC are mainly spread among middle-aged and elderly persons across sexes with respondents mostly in urban areas choosing the party over the two closest rivals. Out of the 27 LGAs opinions are higher for APC in 17 LGAs, 6 LGAs in favour of Labour Party while 4 LGAs favour PDP.”

Aside from polling higher among eligible voters, the result showed that “the majority of respondents (at 70 percent) that APC is likely to win the election ahead of Labour Party (24 percent), followed by PDP at 12 percent.

“In 17 out of the 27 LGs majority of respondents believed APC will win the election while in 7 and 3 local governments majority of respondents believed Labour and PDP will win, respectively.”

The report also commended all the political parties in the election for working hard to add value to the integrity of the election by canvassing for support especially to sway the undecided voters.

It further stated: “Political parties have contacted people in different ways to get their support. Some of the ways are giving food and drinks for attending a rally (51%), sending a message on social media asking to support a candidate (47%), and door-to-door visits (41%). Across different ways, APC is observed to be more involved in using these strategies to contact people than other parties or candidates.

“For respondents that had engaged in activities to support gubernatorial candidates of their choice, the following activities are the foremost activities engaged in encouraged family and friends to support a candidate or party (74%), joined a party (56%) and participated in a rally (47%). APC (26%) followed BY LP (20%) are observed to be the major parties enjoying more encouragement of family and friends to support their candidate or party.”

The report further commended the electoral body, stressing that the survey showed electorates in the state have expressed their confidence in the level of preparedness of the electoral body.

The report added: “Overall, 50% believed that INEC is prepared for the forthcoming elections. While 28% believed that INEC is very prepared, 22% believed they are somewhat prepared.”

The report indicated that there is a palpable fear of violence among voters which, it says, may drastically voter turnout during the election.

“64% agreed that the possibility of violence or unrest will/may lead them not to go to the polling station to vote in the forthcoming gubernatorial election. Close to 57% agreed that the forthcoming gubernatorial election will increase the level of violence where they live.”

The report also found that while the majority of respondents decry voter inducement, most of them however confirm the sharing of food, drinks, souvenirs, and even money.

“About 72% agreed they would report a case of electoral bribery because it is the right thing to do. However, 70% agreed there is no point in reporting electoral bribery because nothing useful will be done about it. The majority (63%) agreed that Citizens must pay taxes to any government, no matter how the government performs. More than half (51%) disagreed that there is no point in voting because all politicians are corrupt., while the majority (72%) agreed that Imo State is divided between ordinary people and the corrupt elites who exploit them.”

This report tasked INEC to ensure the conduct of free and fair elections that would reflect the wishes of the people.

BREAKING: Uzodimma breaks silence, accuses Ajaero of interfering in Imo politics

Imo state governor, Hope Uzodimma, has accused the president of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Joe Ajaero, of interfering in the state’s politics.

The Nation reports organised labour had accused Uzodimma, of conspiring with the state’s Commissioner of Police, Muhammed Barde, to “abduct” their president.

Ajaero, during a press briefing earlier in the week, had accused the Imo State government of “violating the rights of the Nigerian workers in the state,” and therefore vowed to mobilise members of the union in the state for a total strike.

Ajaero was said to have been arrested by men of the Imo State Police Command while leading a protest in the state on Wednesday.

But the command said he was only rescued from a mob and put in protective custody.

Ajaero was seen in a viral video, sitting between two men while he was being rushed to Federal Medical Centre, Owerri.

Uzodimma who spoke after receiving the All Progressives Congress’ flag from President Bola Tinubu at the Aso Rock Villa, Abuja on Thursday, November 2, said: “What has happened in this ugly coincidence is that the National President of the Nigeria Labour Congress is from Imo State and has not been able to demarcate the difference between being a national leader of an organisation and then an interested party in local politics.”
