“It is necessary to note that, all over the world, citizens who are desirous of socio-political advancement have always risen and forged a common front in order to actualize the task of building a better society. This is vision behind the formation of the Imo Progressives Movement (IPM).

“The movement has, therefore, assembled thousands of patriotic Imo citizens and residents, and has constituted them into a formidable political force, so that the dividends of democracy recorded in the State under Governor Uzodimma are not rolled back.”

Addressing a session of the management committee of the Movement, Dibiagwu, extolled the leadership qualities of Governor Uzodimma, and added that the Governor’s accomplishments in all the sectors of the State’s economy are very numerous to mention.

Hundreds of Awaka indigenes from Owerri North Local Government Area of Imo State yesterday vowed to support Governor Hope Uzodimma’s re-election bid come November 11.

They hinged their support on two legs:  One, to allow the Imo Charter of Equity, which specifies rotation of governorship office among the senatorial districts and two, they maintained that the incumbent has performed creditably to earn a second term.

The residents who defied the heavy downpour to attend the ground-breaking rally at the Awaka Primary School ground said re-electing Uzodinma will balance the political equation in the state.

In line with the Charter, if Governor Uzodimma, who is from Orlu zone wins, the Owerri zone will produce the governor in 2027.

A chieftain of the community and an elder of Nzuko Owere General Assembly, Chief Jerry Chukwueke said, the rally was the conclusion of Owerri North tour championed by a group to ensure  Uzodimma’s victory at the November governorship election.

“Now, the Imo Charter of Equity is real. Our people have decided that just like Anambra,  Ebonyi,  Enugu and Abia,  Imo will now join the business of equity, meaning the rotation of the position of governor between one senatorial zone and another.

So, we have agreed that Governor Hope should complete his second term and all other candidates from Orlu and other zones should step down.

Besides, Chukwueke said Uzodinma deserves re-election judging from the work he has done.

“The truth of the matter is that our governor has done a great job for our people. Only few days ago the last batch of a thousand pilgrims returned from Jordan and Jerusalem all paid for by this government,  the roads,  infrastructure, education,  healthcare,  or as in project that would create hundreds and thousands of jobs to skill-up Imo,  rural healthcare at the 305 wards in Imo,  267/of the rural healthcare centres are working and active.

He appealed to the people to put aside everything else and vote for Hope Uzodimma to make way for the Owerri zone in 2027.

  • Uzodimma and Imo youths: An appraisal

Uzodimma and Imo youths: An appraisal

    • By Izunna Chidozie

Imo Governor, Hope Uzodimma, recently made a skills and engagement promise to Imo youths. While addressing youths at a graduation ceremony of Skill-up Imo initiative in the state, the governor promised to assist no fewer than 4,000 interested indigenes of the state to relocate to Europe and Canada before the end of December this year. Such youths while in Europe would be actively engaged in skills acquisition, job placements and sundry forms of human capital development and entrepreneurship.

The governor had said while addressing a crowd of mostly youths: “Let me tell you something: I have gone further to negotiate with European Union companies and Canadian companies. They are sending us areas of visible skills which our youth will also learn. By December this year, 4,000 Imo youths will be employed in Europe. Once the letter comes, the governor will pay for your air ticket.”

Ever since that promise, some Nigerians, including Imo indigenes, have taken to both traditional and social media, to lampoon Uzodimma for encouraging Japa (overseas relocation) syndrome among the youths in his state. Some argued that rather than encourage exodus of Imo youths to Europe and Canada, the governor should work hard to create jobs for such youths in his state.

While the argument of the governor’s critics may seem plausible on the face of it, it suffers a diminution in logic and essence when subjected to critical analysis within the context of globalisation and modern universal concept of labour movement.

By pushing a policy that encourages the immigration of Imo youths to Europe and elsewhere, Uzodimma has not done anything new or strange. Whether by design or default, the governor is modelling an Asian Diaspora policy, especially the Chinese model of Diaspora engagement that has seen Chinese citizens migrate from China to Europe, Africa and the Americas for jobs, skills acquisition, study, including study of foreign languages.

Under President Xi Jinping, for instance, China has fashioned one of the smartest Diaspora policies which encourages China citizens to travel the world for job, studies and skills acquisition. Today’s estimate places the number of people of Chinese origin outside China at over 60 million. While some of these people have acquired citizenship of their current host nations, China still considers them to be nationals of China, regardless of their acquired citizenships. This policy, which is now even more aggressively applied by Beijing, has contributed to China emerging as one of the topmost super powers in the world.

The Chinese are all over Africa, United States, Canada and Europe working, contracting, studying and actively engaging in all manner of entrepreneurial ventures.

Ditto for India, Mexico, the Philippines and other emerging powers in Asia. Now, you know why these four countries top the log of nations with highest Diaspora remittances. In 2022, India led the chart with a princely $100 billion in remittances, followed by Mexico with $60 billion, China ($51bn) and Philippines ($38bn). The Chinese are all over the world learning foreign languages, deepening their knowledge of other cultures, expanding their knowhow in tech and science. The Chinese are doing what some persons consider as menial jobs in all parts of Africa including Nigeria. Some have picked up impeccable English, French and Arabic languages. They know what you know, but you don’t know what they know. They understand the ways and cultures of the outside world but the world can barely scratch the surface of the tech might and cultures of the Chinese. This is possible because of a deliberate Chinese policy to encourage its citizens to Japa to the uttermost parts of the world with full government support.

China is unrelenting in pursuing her well-thought out Diaspora policy because it’s seen as a critical factor in the country’s ever-increasing global influence as a world power. Beijing is consciously husbanding Diaspora Chinese resources in the fields of leadership, economics, science and technology, diplomacy and soft power.

Those who criticize Uzodimma for not creating the 4,000 jobs in his Imo State should also ask China why she did not create jobs at home for her very strong Diaspora contingent.

Last year alone, Diaspora remittance to Nigeria stood at over $20 billion. This is in addition to knowledge, skills and values acquired overseas by these Nigerians. These Diaspora Nigerians return home from time to time to apply their skills, create jobs, set up businesses and transfer skills acquired overseas. Many high-flying Nigerian professionals and business people were once Diasporans who returned to the country after their exposure, study and skills acquisition adventures in the West and Asia. That exposure gave them a head-start on their return to the country.

Truth be told, Nigeria needs a stronger Diaspora contingent. Whether they are medical doctors, nurses, lawyers, innovators, entrepreneurs, factory workers and other artisanal hands in the Americas, Asia, Europe and elsewhere, their cash remittances and skills transfers to Nigeria will help to enhance the nation’s GDP. This is the logic behind Uzodimma’s Diaspora push for Imo youths. They need such exposure. In a country where people sell their land and valuables to finance their migration overseas, a government that offers to help such persons, especially the youths, deserves commendation, not criticism.

Only an armchair critic would doubt Uzodimma on this. It was the same doubt they expressed when he pledged to upskill Imo youths in the sphere of ICT. As you read this, Uzodimma has fulfilled that promise. He has caused the upskilling of 15,000 Imo youths under the state’s Cohort-2-Skill-up Project, with a promise of training another batch of 40,000 young people in different digital skills.

The programme did not end at upskilling the youths. They were handed a laptop each as a take-off tool to the acclamation of two key persons in the nation’s digital economy matrix: The Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani, described the project as a bold step to impact the lives of the youths. He noted that Imo State is emerging as the digital headquarters of Nigeria.

The other personality who witnessed the graduation ceremony and the presentation of laptops to the youths was Africa’s serial ICT entrepreneur and chairman of Zinox Group, Leo Stan Ekeh. While acknowledging that “nobody has done what Governor Uzodimma is doing in Imo”, the tech billionaire challenged the 15,000 youths to take advantage of the training they have acquired and the tools they have received.

Logic: If Uzodimma made similar promise to Imo youths before and fulfilled it, there is no reason to doubt that he will fulfil his latest promise to the same youths. For a governor who is the first to create the Ministry of Digital Economy in his state and the first to empower youths in his state with requisite light-years-ahead skills in ICT at such magnitude, Uzodimma should be seen as a futuristic leader on a mission to resource the youths of Imo into competitive global citizens. In the next 15 years, Imo will never be the same again. A Silicon Valley would have sprouted in the eastern heartland courtesy of Uzodimma.

The Chinese are all over Africa trading (there is a Chinese market in Lagos), doing artisanal jobs and winning the big contracts, Africa should never be shy to ship her citizens to the uttermost parts of the earth to do the same. The International Labour Organisation (ILO) encourages the shared principle of labour movement. Uzodimma has taken one bold step in this direction, he deserves our laudation.

Uzodimma creating tech millionaires in Imo State, says Zinox boss

On a day 15,000  youths graduated with digital skills in Imo and were empowered by the state government,  Chairman of Zinox Computers, Chief Leo Stan Ekeh, has predicted the boom of millionaires in the state.

Trained under the Skillsup Imo digital programme, the 15,000 youths received laptops and other equipment from Governor Hope Uzodimma to enable them to  be self-reliant.

At the ceremony in Owerri attended by many dignitaries, including the Minister of Digital Economy,  Dr Bosun Tijani, Chief Ekeh described what Uzodimma did as phenomenal and unprecedented which was driven by sheer vision.

According to him,  apart from taking the youth off the job market, Uzodimma has started the process of creating millionaires in the state.

He was emphatic that out of the 15,000 youths who received their start up kits from the governor, no fewer than 3,000 will be billionaires in  future.

Ekeh noted that going by his experience as a tech giant, what Uzodimma has done is unprecedented and futuristic.

He said as an apolitical personality, he was not campaigning for anyone but appreciating the vision by Uzodimma to make Imo State the technology and digital hub of the country.

The Digital Economy Minister also shared the same view, saying Uzodimma has done what no other state governor has done in the country.

He said with what he had witnessed in Imo ,the federal government was going to partner the state in the training and empowerment of youths in digital skills to boost the economy.

In his speech, Gov Uzodimma disclosed that the 15,000 youths were the second batch to benefit from the programme after the first batch of 5,000.

According to the governor,  a record 300,000 Imo youths are slated to benefit from the programme.

He said the 20,000 youths trained have been equipped with relevant digital tools to enable them to launch their own startups, create new ventures and become self reliant, noting that some of them have already taken advantage of freelancing opportunities that come with the digital economy to provide tech servics to local and international companies.

He pledged that his administration is committed to leveraging on technology to build a sustainable digital economy that will generate new jobs and expand the state’s economic space.

Uzodimma charged the youths to make use of the skills they learnt towards transforming Imo State, and by extension, Nigeria, into a bedrock of technological advancement in Africa.

    Uzodimma reiterates commitment to welfare

Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma has reiterated  that his government will continue to pursue programmes that will promote the welfare of the people, emphasizing that those who see selfishness as part of government should have themselves to blame.

He said: “Leadership is service and once you are able to serve well, whether now or later, people will appreciate you.”

Uzodimma spoke at the  birthday thanksgiving Mass in honour of Sir Jude Ejiogu, a former Secretary to Imo State Government, held at Immaculate Conception Parish Emekuku in Owerri North LGA of Imo State on Sunday, September 24, 2023.

At the residence of the celebrant, during reception, Governor Uzodimma urged the people of Owerri, especially those from Emekuku, to take the interest of the State seriously far above their selfish interest.

Addressing the congregation, the Governor thanked God for the celebrant and said that he was very delighted and honoured of the opportunity to worship with other Christian faithful who joined to honour Sir Ejiogu.

The governor urged civil servants complaining that they have not been receiving their salaries, to find out whether they fall within the category of those who were receiving double salaries for more than 10 to 15 years “because everything about payment of salaries and pensions had been automated.”

“The system we are operating now will not have any room to discriminate because the system does not know you, your face nor where you come from,” he said and added that arrangements were in place to correct the challenges a few genuine ones may be having.

He warned those who have been blackmailing the Government on allegation of not being paid their salaries to desist and say the truth or government will be forced to publish their names and their crime against the State.

“It is not good to be worshiping God in an uncompleted building while we are living in completed houses, well furnished.”

To assist the Parish in the completion of the Church building so that it will be dedicated before the completion of his second tenure in office, Governor Uzodimma donated N30 million to the project.

He was categorical in his comment that the donation has nothing to do with his election as michief makers may be wont to think.

Expressing his appreciation, the Celebrant, Sir Ejiogu thanked the Governor and all that came for the Church Service to celebrate with him, appreciating, especially his Emekuku community for always supporting him and what he believes in.

Sir Ejiogu told people from his community that the only birthday gift he needs from them is for them to come out en mass on November 11, 2023 to vote massively for APC in the forthcoming Imo State Governorship  election.

He described the Governor as a man of Grace who has touched the lives of the downtrodden in the State in particular and Nigeria in general.

Earlier in his homily, the Parish Pries, Rev. Fr. John Anyaegbulem reminded the Christian faithful of the “generosity of God,” and informed that “God is generous and compassionate and shows everyone equal love because his ways and our ways are not the same.”

Rev. Fr. Anyaegbulem noted that “God’s mercies and compassion to mankind cannot be overemphasized,” adding that “everything we are, all our efforts today, are by God’s grace.”

He commended the Governor for all the infrastructural revolution going on in Imo State, especially the construction of Ekemele, Okigwe road, Orlu road, the dredging of Urashi river “and all the good works that are going on across the State.”

Meanwhile, Governor Uzodimma urged the people of Owerri, especially the Emekuku people, to consider the interest of the State seriously before theirs.

He explained that his administration has created an enabling environment that will help in enhancing the welfare of the people but was worried that “opposition is sponsoring insecurity in the State.”

“The government has formed a comprehensive analysis where clergy, elders and political class would come together and chat in one voice for Imo Charter of Equity.

“If there is equity and political balance then development and prosperity will come very easily.”

He said for it to be implementable it is only when power begins to move in the three geo-political zones that there will be peace and equity in Imo.

He said Sir Ejiogu afforded to celebrate his birthday at home  because Imo is safe.

While wishing him well and praying God to grant him many more birthdays ahead, the Governor reassured the people that he has come to serve the people and that nothing will change the covenant he has with God.

The Youth Wing of the Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide has endorsed the re-election of Governor of Imo State, Sen. Hope Uzodimma, saying the latter’s performance was the sole reason for throwing their weight behind his candidature in the November 11 governorship contest in the state.

The leadership of the Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide Youth Wing spoke on Wednesday at the Sam Mbakwe Executive Council Hall, Government House, Owerri when they paid a working visit to Governor Uzodimma after their week-long tour of Imo State to assess the critical projects executed by the State Government.

In a statement by Oguwike Nwachuku, the Chief Press Secretary and Media Adviser to the Governor Uzodinmma,  the Governor was said to have urged the youths to avail him of an action plan on how to be relevant in the scheme of things, come together and contribute more meaningfully to the society.

Led by Comrade Chukwuma Okpalaezeukwu, the youths said they were delighted to visit the Governor to “commend and encourage” him on his numerous developmental projects and to inform him that they were solidly behind his re-election so that he can “consolidate on his good works.”

Part of the encouragement by the youths, was the conferment of the honour of Grand Commander of Igbo Youth Worldwide on Governor Uzodimma.

The youths said they have assessed other leaders in the South East and were happy to zero their choice of Grand Commander on Governor Uzodinmma due to his uncommon commitment to the course of the Igbo in general and the Igbo youths in particular.

They specifically singled out and commended the quality and durability of the Owerri-Okigwe, Owerri-Orlu and the Owerri-Mbaise-Obowo-Umuahia roads, and said the entire South East would have been opened up if the Governor completes the construction of the Orlu- Mgbe-Akokwa-Uga road during his second term in office.

Okpalaezeukwu informed the Governor that the youths were not happy about the state of insecurity in the South East and would want to be part of the efforts by the government to deal with the situation.

He said that the youth elements were highly needed to end the insecurity in the South East, particularly as most of those perpetrating the ills are youths.

Governor Uzodimma thanked the youths for the honour done him as their Grand Commander, and for appreciating his humble achievements, the reason they have called for his re-election.

The Governor, who agreed with the youths that insecurity was a challenge in the South East, assured them of the possibility to overcome the menace.

He advised them to shun violence, restiveness, and crime before, during and after the election.  The Deputy Governor of Imo State, Prof Placid Njoku, the Speaker, Imo State House of Assembly, Rt. Why I’m supporting Uzodimma, by Ohakim

Former Governor of Imo State, Chief Ikedi Ohakim has thrown his weight behind the re-election bid of the incumbent, Governor  Hope Uzodinma, the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate in the November 11 governorship election.

Speaking to reporters on why he decided to back the incumbent, Ohakim said, Uzodinma ranks tall in tackling the myriad challenges facing the state.

He  also advised Governor Uzodimma on the need to improve on intangible things that anchor on good governance and restoration of confidence in government such as reviewing some contractual obligations to the people by the State Government.

Ohakim, who governed  the  state between 2003 – 2007 on the  platform of People’s Democratic Party (PDP) said this on Tuesday  in his Owerri home.

The former Governor made his stand known on four critical areas, that bothered on security, youth restiveness, re-election of Governor Uzodimma and Imo charter of equity.

According to him, the reason for this letter is that we have again begun to witness dangerous political maneuverings, lies and destructive propaganda in the current political season. I have thought over this development and the question that comes to my mind is: can’t we learn from history? It’s this question that I want to raise before you, dear brethren, so that together we can look for an answer” he pleaded.

Ochinanwata as he is popularly known and called observed that Uzodimma is seeking re-election for second term, which he said, it’s his constitutionally entitlement, but however, there are also other bonafide indigenes of the State who are running for the office and are similarly constitutionally entitled to do so and, of course, nobody can ask any of them not to pursue his ambition.

According to the former Governor, given the current political and socioeconomic situation in the country, Imo State is not in the best position for leadership change.

He said that apart from the fact that the governor has performed quite creditably in piloting the affairs of the State – especially in the area of infrastructural developments – in his first tenure, he has this striking connection with the federal authorities that has yielded good dividends for the state and its people.

“We can, therefore, not afford to decouple that chain-link now by bringing in a new leadership arrangement in the State. Needless to say, the existing cordial relationship between the State and the Federal Government can best – if not only – be sustained through the current administration in the State. Any other thing is to force us as a people, to start all over again and we can ill afford that.  Another regime disruption at this point in time will surely not be in the interest of our people and will have more disadvantages than advantages.

Ohakim further pointed out that, “I am making this intervention because I believe that we, as a people, should take advantage of the past. Never again should we allow any individual or group of individuals to cut short our collective dream in pursuit of their self-serving interests.

“I have looked at the entire gamut of issues and challenges confronting us and I have come to the inescapable conclusion, that Uzodimma is our best candidate for Imo Eleven – Eleven election, and that is why I am solidly supporting him in this bid. While am not asking anybody not to run, the plain truth is that Imo would be better off – if Uzodimma is re – elected, and the Charter of Equity , which has remained elusive, will then take its pride of place in our collective quest for a better Imo State,’’ he assured.
