Six AI tools to help you celebrate Valentine’s Day the African way

Skip the generic gifts. These Google AI tools will inspire unique presents and unforgettable experiences for your loved ones.

Valentine’s Day is one of the most daunting gift-giving holidays. You want to get something for your partner, of course, but also you like to let your friends and family (and even your dogs) know how much they’re loved. It’s a tricky holiday: The perfect Valentine’s Day gift is sentimental but not saccharine-sweet. Genuinely useful but not overly practical. It has a personal touch — but could potentially be replicated for a friend or two (or three).

If you need a little help, here are six AI-powered Google tools to help you find the perfect gift:

Search (and shop) what you see with Google Lens

Google Lens is the ultimate companion tool when gift inspiration strikes. You might already know that Lens is a handy shopping feature that allows you to take a photo of something and find what it is and where to buy it or something similar. But there are a couple other ways it can work, too. For example, my mom loves getting flowers, so when I see some while out on a run I can quickly open the Google app (Android and iOS) and snap a pic with Lens to identify them. (Plus, using multisearch, I could even type in descriptive text to search for, say, similar flowers in a blue hue.) And since my husband and I like to go big on a fancy meal instead of exchanging gifts on Valentine’s Day, if I see a pic of a pasta dinner we really loved while vacationing in Italy in my photo gallery, I can ask Lens to tell me more about what it was and help me find a restaurant near me that serves it.

Circle up with Circle to Search before you buy

I get tons of gift ideas when I’m scrolling social media that make me think of my friends and family — so if I happen to come across an image that happens to have the perfect dog bed in the background, I can use Circle to Search to help me find out more about it without leaving whatever app I’m using. All I have to do is  simply circle, highlight or scribble that specific part of an item and Circle to Search can help me discover more about the item and even shop for it or similar items from a range of retailers without switching apps. Circle to Search is available on Pixel 8, Pixel 8 Pro and the new Samsung Galaxy S24 series.

    Try AI-enhanced photo gifts

A picture is worth a thousand words — including, “Thank you so much, I love it!” While my first love language is sharing an elaborate meal, a close runner-up is photo gifts. I take a ton of photos with my Pixel 8 Pro, especially during special trips and important moments, and preserving those memories for my loved ones can make a thoughtful, affordable gift. Like the photo below that I took at Yosemite on a hiking trip with my husband, which I captured using the Tensor-powered Super Res Zoom feature. Or the one I took of the night sky with Night Sight (which also uses AI) during a yearly camping trip with my girlfriends. Whatever photos I end up using, I’ll also run them through AI editing features like Magic Eraser to get rid of unwanted objects or Photo Unblur to clean them up a bit before I print them.

And if you plan on sharing or gifting a photo of you and your significant other, Best Take is your best friend: This tool uses AI to scan a handful of photos taken in quick succession and allows you to select the best image of each person in the picture.

Gemini: Your AI Genie for Inspiration

Stuck on finding the perfect experience? Let Gemini be your genie in a digital bottle! Ask it open-ended questions like “romantic things to do in Cape Town this Valentine’s Day” or “unique Valentine’s Day experiences in Johannesburg,” and watch a treasure trove of personalised ideas unfold. It’s like having a knowledgeable friend by your side, guiding you towards experiences that resonate with your love and the spirit of Africa.

Spark your creativity with AI experiments

You don’t have to spend money on a gift to let someone know you’re thinking of them. If you need an artistic spark, here are two Google AI experiments you should try: First, there’s Instrument Playground, a Google AI-powered tool that lets you choose one of over 100 instruments from around the world you’d like to play to generate a 20 second sound clip. What’s more, you can add an adjective to your prompt – such as ‘romantic’ – to shape the results, making sure your clip captures the perfect mood for Valentine’s Day.

If words are more your thing, try Poem Portraits, an algorithm trained on more than 20 million words of 19th century poetry. All you have to do is choose a single word as a jumping off point and Poem Portraits will write a short poem for you, as well as add it to a stylized photo from your camera roll (if you want it to — you can skip this option). You can save this short poem as well as add it to the collective poem, a massive crowd-based, ongoing text based on user contributions. Which, I suppose, you could think of as a gift for everyone who comes across it.

YouTube Music: Soundtrack to Your Love Story

Set the mood with a soundtrack that beats to the rhythm of your hearts. With YouTube Music, you’re just a search away from crafting the perfect Afropop love song playlist. Let the vibrant melodies of amapiano or the soulful harmonies of highlife fill the air, creating an unforgettable ambiance that lingers long after the last note fades.

  • Eight countries that don’t celebrate Valentine’s Day

Eight countries that don’t celebrate Valentine’s Day

Valentine’s Day, celebrated on February 14 of every year, is just around the corner. February has long been recognised as the month of love as Valentine’s Day is widely observed annually on the 14th of this month. In many countries, people celebrate this occasion to tell their loved ones how they feel through beautiful flowers and gifts.

On the other hand, many Eastern countries choose not to celebrate Valentine’s Day because of different religious beliefs.

Here are the countries that don’t celebrate Valentine’s Day

    1. Uzbekistan

Uzbekistan is well known for its long history and diverse culture with Islam as the dominant religion. The country was tolerant of Valentine’s Day celebrations for many years until 2012 when an internal decree that bans the celebration of this holiday was issued by the Ministry of Education’s Department of Enlightenment and the Promotion of Values.

Instead of observing Valentine’s Day, people in Uzbekistan celebrate the birthday of their country’s hero – Babur – a Mughal Emperor. Valentine’s Day is not illegal, but it is strongly discouraged in favour of commemorating Babur.

    2. Iran

In recent years, Iranian authorities have aimed to forbid Valentine’s celebrations, calling the holiday a “decadent Western custom” and threatening shops and restaurants with prosecution if they sell Valentine’s Day gifts.

Despite this, numerous restaurants in Tehran have reported been fully booked and many shops have been seen selling teddy bears and chocolates. Because they are defying the law, establishments use lookouts to see if inspectors are on a Valentine’s Day patrol.

    3. Malaysia

Malaysia is a federal, constitutional monarchy in Southeast Asia, divided by the South China Sea into two regions. The constitution grants freedom of religion, but it is a multi-ethnic and multi-cultural country, the population of which is approximately 60 percent Muslim. The capital is Kuala Lumpur.

Since 2005, the celebration of Valentine’s Day has been banned. The Malaysian Islamic Development Department blames the holiday for everything from abortion to alcohol and takes the stance that it is a link of negative ills that can invite disaster and moral decay among youth. There is even an annual anti-Valentine’s Day campaign to reinforce the view. Anybody going out and celebrating does so at their own risk, including arrests.

     4. Indonesia

No law expressly prohibits the celebration of the day in Indonesia. However, in some areas of the country such as Surabaya and Makassar where people have more radical Muslim views, intimidation tactics or small-scale bans are used while in Bando Aceh, there is an outright ban.

    5. Saudi Arabia

In Saudi Arabia, conservative officials strictly impose the ban on the holiday. Selling roses, red products and love-themed cards are banned in advance of February 14. The phenomenon has led to the creation of a black market of Valentine’s day products.

    6. Pakistan

Pakistan is another country that has mixed feelings about Valentine’s Day. Pakistan has been subject to numerous riots surrounding the celebration of Valentine’s Day. In 2014, two universities in Peshawar and Pakistan clashed with each other’s beliefs over the ideology of Valentine’s Day in the eyes of Islamic Law.

Students threw rocks at one another, which eventually led to gunshots being fired from both sides, injuring three students, according to Wedded Wonderland.

A private citizen petitioned the High Court in Islamabad to have the day banned. Finally, on February 7th, 2018, the Islamabad High Court banned Valentine’s Day celebrations and media coverage, claiming that it was a Western cultural import that contradicted Islamic teachings. Not everyone in Pakistan agrees with this decision, especially university students and flower vendors who did well on Valentine’s Day.

    7. India

Owing to its independent revolution from the British empire in 1947, the Indian government refused to advocate Western values and culture.

In 2015, party leader Chandra Prakash Kaushik told The Times of India “We are not against love, but if a couple is in love then they must get married … if they are not certain, they should not belittle love by openly going around together.”

    8. Russia

Technically, Russia does celebrate a type of Valentine’s Day, but it is very different from the traditional holiday. On March 8, Russians celebrate International Women’s Day in much the same way that Western cultures celebrate Valentine’s Day.

Gifting each other flowers and chocolate is very common on this day, as is expecting husbands and boyfriends to do all the cooking and cleaning, letting women have a full day of rest.

Instead of celebrating Valentine’s Day because of a saint, Russia chooses to celebrate the love for their women, paying tribute to women across the globe and equal rights, according to Wedded Wonderland’s report.

  • Church warns against Valentine’s Day abuse

Church warns against Valentine’s Day abuse

Ahead of Valentine’s Day celebration, a church, Faith Revivalists Christian Mission (Aladura), Somolu, Lagos has warned Nigerians against abusing the day by indulging in unholy practices.

Speakers at the church’s 15th Walk in love gave the warning at an interactive session it organised to herald the day. It had as its theme “Owe no man anything but love one another“.

The speakers, who were drawn from the church’s hierarchy and membership, were Assistant Pastor Olajide Oluga, and Prophet Olu Ajayi. Others were Most Evangelist PeterTaiwo and Senior Evangelist Tosin Adeyanju.

They said the celebration is not meant for Nigerians to indulge in fornication and adultery as these are sins and are punishable by God. Specifically, they said whoever wants to celebrate it must do so according to God’s principles only.

Oluga criticised the way Valentine’s Day is celebrated by the youth and some adults, saying that was not what God intended love to be and that what these people practice is lust and anti-God’s teaching. Rather, he said, God commanded parents to teach their children the virtue of real love. Principally, he warned against the love for money in place of love for God, which he said could be found among true Christians.

“We have to return to God by finding the time to pray and read. Your love for God must not be based on material things. You don’t have to be a millionaire to show love. You don’t allow your love for God to be determined by other things, ” he added.

He cited King David and some prophets as those who showed true love for God.

Ajayi urged Nigerians to show love for their country like the Americans who say, “God bless America” and refer to their country as “God’s own country”. He added that there was a need for us to show love to our church who Jesus died.

To couples, he said their life is for a short time. So, they should learn to tolerate themselves and allow the marriage to be rancour-free. Disagreements should be quickly settled and learn to be of good character to their children.

Most Senior Evangelist Oluga tasked Christians with love, saying it is their responsibility to love themselves and their neighbour.

To show that they could be loving, he charged Nigerians to always show affection, learn to forgive, respect and honour others. He said where these attributes are missing, then there is no love.

Adeyanju advised parents too to bring up their children in the way of God. “Don’t indulge them. Read the word of God to them. Teach your children the word of God,” she added.

    3. Visit an art gallery

  • Be romantic…much more be patriotic!!!

Is it possible to be in love with one’s oppressor? I set my heart to know by wisdom this hard question and to my greatest shock found that it is not implausible. I perceived that “This is madness not love”! Are Nigerians really in love with their oppressors? I leave you to judge! It is not a coincidence that our famous general elections (day) is close to the historic Valentine’s Day (It was originally on Valentine’s Day in 2015). The message is: Love and sacrifice for Nigeria and someday, we will build her into a developed nation where she will love us back. Stop asking; what has Nigeria done for me? As a “son/daughter of the soil” initiate love for your fatherland. Love is not just about being romantic; you need to be patriotic too. I challenge you to vote love for your fatherland. Even after the elections, love will carry us through.

I’d rather we get mad at our oppressors than love them. Love and oppression are two opposing forces, but in the long run, love conquers all if we engage it collectively and relentlessly. I believe it’s time to deploy the weapon of selfless love to chase out the ugly shades of oppression in our God-given country. Nigeria is no doubt a rich country endowed with natural and human resources (but)…with many poor people…hmm! The labors of our heroes past and present shall never be in vain. Enlist in the army of nation-builders. Let your love for Nigeria inspire you to perform your civic responsibilities, vote value not vanity, and shun corruption at all levels…mind you, the perpetrators of corruption and nepotism at all levels of our economy are Nigeria’s oppressors. The simpletons are the lovers/fans of these oppressors because they believe anything and everything even when it’s obvious that the sugarcoated words of the tyrants are laced with lies…I do not intend to launch into a tirade of abuse against politicians. Please note that not all Nigerian politicians are wolves, it’s a bit complicated though…hmm…Wolves in sheep’s clothing and sheep in wolves clothing. I opine that seeking a saint as the next President of Nigeria is an aberration; it’s not about perfection, it’s about authenticity. Age should not even be the defining factor rather a yearning heart willing to serve the people faithfully. You need to see beyond the end of your nose to discern whom to vote for. Seize the opportunity for freedom within the lifetime of the opportunity.

Did you know that when push comes to shove, loyalty is rated above competence? When you’re in trouble look out for those who believe in you not those who are insolently competent. Nigeria needs more of loyalists than the high-headed technocrats who are simpletons, to get out of this cesspit of political and economic impotence. Now another opportunity to fight for freedom is here, let’s fight with our votes…the warfare is real yet freedom looms! If you ask for a difficult thing then you will tread on a difficult path. Freedom is a difficult thing to ask for…remember power is never given rather it is taken by force. Much more, you can’t afford to be a simpleton in life or else you will be eaten up by wolves in sheep’s clothing. Be wise as serpents and harmless as doves.

It’s amazing how the generations of sheep have been surviving. The mystery of divine preservation has preserved the sheep from the wolves. Without human intervention, the sheep births just one offspring per time, while wolves birth at least four, in fact, the wolves feed on the sheep without mercy. Safety comes by Grace…and grace attracts power to you!!!  Stop seeking power at all cost…when you connect with Divine Grace, you’ll become a rich deposit of wisdom, knowledge, and understanding. These virtues attract power to you so that you can effortlessly glide across the mountainside trail of life.

When you’ve been climbing alone for hours…days…years, there’s a tremendous sense of camaraderie when you meet another climber. Such was my joy when I hosted my fellow nation-builder, Enitan Ibironke, (a renowned Migration expert and Media Relations Officer of the Migrants project) on my radio program; MINDSCOPE at Eko89.7fm live studio on Monday, January 21, 2019. Enitan spoke with great candor on migration issues during elections; “One of the biggest issues that will determine the 2019 Nigeria elections is migration. We need to be more strategic and analytical; since we have more Presidential aspirants it suggests that we have more power of choice. The proliferation of Presidential aspirants is quite uplifting for a lot of Nigerians however migration issues are brewing. For normal elections, people in Diaspora are expected to return but not in our case, some Nigerians are looking for ways to get out, on the premise of hate speeches and fake news they envisage violence. One of my colleagues reported that one of his big customers confided in him that he has already paid his travel agent to ensure he gets a flight ticket or any other means to get out of the country few days before the elections. Honestly, I think panic will not help us at this critical hour. In March 2017, Mrs. Abike Dabiri-Erewa; The Senior Special Assistant to the President on foreign affairs and the Diaspora revealed that there were 15 million Nigerians in Diaspora(2017). That figure would have doubled considering the rate at which Nigerians migrate… and another issue is that some Nigerians in Diaspora are agitated over whether they’ve been cloned or not. How I wish our Nigerians in the Diaspora can be more enthusiastic about voting. On the other hand, many stakeholders are wary of the presence of large numbers of immigrants during elections, so what is the way forward? The differentiating factor would be the drive for us all to have our PVC’s (Permanent Voter card) and vote wisely. The issues of migration are double-edged; People coming in to perpetrate evil and those running out of the country. My question is when we all leave, who will build the Nigeria that we desire? When we all run and don’t make a decision to choose who we think can do the job, what will happen to Nigeria? If we don’t want to be classified as a failed state, then we must stay and vote! I would say that strong and effective border controls are not negotiable in ensuring adequate security of lives, especially against terrorist attacks.

Much more Nigerians need to be more enthused about voting. See your PVC as your birthright; why sell it for a plate of porridge??? Psychologically, nobody can make you do what you don’t want to do. The notion of someone gave me a bribe to buy my PVC is erroneous and must be corrected. We must determine within ourselves that our conscience will not be bought and come out to vote. Largely, let’s place emphasis on learning leadership skills, that way; we can mitigate the leadership problems ravaging our beloved nation.

  • ‘Showering gifts on lovers should’t be done only on Valentine’s Day’

Some residents of Lagos on Wednesday said that showering gifts on lovers should be done frequently rather than waiting till the annual Valentine’s Day.

They said this when the News Agency of Nigeria sought their reactions on how they were preparing for the 2019 edition of the Valentine’s Day which holds on Thursday, Feb. 14 across the world.

They said that lovers should always show genuine love to one another on every day of their lives until they would be separated by death.

They asked what lovers would be showering on their loved ones on the rest days of the year.

A sportsman, Noah Banjo, said that the whole idea of Valentine’s Day was an excuse.

“Why wait until one day to show someone you care about that you love him or her.

“There are 365 days in a year, you celebrate with your loved one in a day and after that, everything goes back to normal.

“If I love someone, I will seize every opportunity I have to show her such love. I can even get a gift every month for him or her, take him or her on a dinner date when I can afford it.

“I do not have to wait till the Valentine’s Day proper which I believe is a myth before I show someone that I care for him or her.

“ Valentine’s Day is a sham and an excuse.

“Those who benefit most from the day are gift-item sellers.

“They make it look like if you do not buy something for someone you love, you have failed in life,” he said.

Emeka Nwadinma, an IT expert, said that had since some years back developed a bad memory about Valentine’s Day.

He said that he lost a loved one to death on one of the day in the past.

“I don’t like talking about Valentine’s Day because it brings sad memories back to me.

“My sister died during childbirth that day. I will never forget how it happened.

“It is a day when lovers are supposed to shower love and affection to one another by sharing gift items.

“But to me, everyday should be used to appreciate the amazing people around us.

“Show appreciation to people everyday even with the tiniest token and do it effortlessly,” he said.

A fashion designer, Adeola Adeaga said, “I believe it is a day set out significantly to express love to people, not necessarily someone you are dating or married to.

“It is a day to show love to everyone we come in contact with by sharing gift items as a token,’’ she said.

She said that she did not have much planned for the day but she would be sharing gifts with people around her.

“My agenda for the day is to deliver the bags I had made for the occasion to their owners.’’

Similarly, Bimbo Ikuloburu, a pharmacist said, that the day was set aside for the celebration of love and affection.

“We should celebrate love everyday not just one day but that particular day that had been set aside makes it more special.

“I’m with my family right now, we will celebrate together by going out to have fun,” she said.

Also, Tolu Bolaji, an engineer, said he saw Valentine’s Day as a day set aside to give physical expressions to the intangible feeling of love.

“Love is a universal phenomenon and deserves to be celebrated.

“I never used to be a fan of Valentine’s Day celebration but I changed my mind because love is the greatest gift from mankind to mankind.

“The day should be acknowledged and craved for by all.’’
