    Ogunlewe denies clash with FUNAAB VC

    Pro-Chancellor and Chairman, Governing Council, Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB), Senator Adeseye Ogunlewe, has refuted a newspaper report that there is a clash between members of the institution’s council and its Vice-Chancellor, Prof Olusola Oyewole.

    The denial followed a recent report in a national daily (not The Nation), titled: Ogunlewe, VC clash over administrative style, which alleged that there was tension between the duo.

    In a statement by Ogunlewe’s Media and Publicity Director, Mark Mayah, the former Minister of Works described the report as distressing, unfortunate and completely repugnant to natural justice.

    “For the avoidance of doubt, at no time did the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman, Governing Council, either in his public engagement or private, have an interactive session with journalists at his Ogudu residence as published in the said report.

    “I have had one-on-one interview session with either Politics or Education reporters, but there was no mention of clash between the VC and myself or any member of the Governing Council. I hereby expressly and comprehensively deny and refute the entire report,” Ogunlewe said.

    UI VC seeks better funding

    The Vice-Chancellor, University of Ibadan, (UI), Prof Isaac Adewole has called on the Federal Government to give special consideration to the funding of the premier university given the age and decay of its infrastructure.

    He spoke at a briefing in Ibadan on his third year in office.

    Adewole made a case for special funding for the institution given its status as the premier university which was established 14 years before others.

    He said considering that it has been in existence for 65 years, most of its infrastructure need replacement.

    For example, he said most of the water pipes laid 65 years ago were in bad shapes and need to be changed.

    While noting that the institution enjoys capital allocation from the government and endowments from individuals, international bodies and corporate organisations, he said UI still needs alternative funding sources outside government.

    He said efforts were on to institute income-generating projects for the university.

    Adewole who did not agree that there was rot in the education sector, said universities were not enough to accommodate eligible students.

    “More universities should be established to accommodate more applicants who could not be admitted by various universities in the country. Government alone cannot do it. We need to see education as necessary tool for development and avenue to generate money,” he said

    While admitting that there were challenges in the sector, he called for massive reconstruction right from the primary school level.

     

  • Don’t underrate yourselves, says VC

    The Vice Chancellor of Fountain University in Osogbo, Osun State, Prof Bashir Ademola Raji, has urged students not to underestimate their capability to succeed. He advised the students at the maiden edition of the Role Model Day organised by Okanlawon Science Academy in Osogbo.

    Raji while identified passion, focus, proper planning and prayer as key qualities for anyone who wants to succeed in life.

    Highlights of the event, included a playlet, interactive session and presentation of awards to deserving persons.

  • Leaders urged on nation building

    Leaders have been charged to always come together in prayers and supplication for the unity and development of the country.

    This was the crux at the fourth National Prayer Breakfast, held at the International Conference Centre, Abuja.

    In his exhortation, the Executive Director, Apostles in the Market Place, Nigeria, Pastor John Enelamah, said the country needed God-fearing leaders that will drive it to development and advised them never to despair in heeding divine call.

    Dignitaries who were present on the occasion included the Vice-Chancellor, Prof Olusola Oyewole; and former Prime Minister of Ethiopia, Dr Ramrat Layne Admassu, who gave the goodwill message.

    The Senate President, Senator David Mark was the Chief Host. He also represented President ,Dr. Goodluck Jonathan.

    who was the Special Guest of Honour. Ofcourse most members of the National Assembly were also present.

    The National Prayer Breakfast is a platform to promote lasting relationships for national development, irrespective of political opinions, persuasions or affiliations.

     

  • VC opens 50-room hostel

    The UNILORIN Vice Chancellor, Prof. AbdulGaniyu Ambali, has inaugurated a 50-room self-contained hostel built by the varsity’s Probitas Multipurpose Cooperative Society.

    The VC congratulated the society on putting up the edifice, saying that it has shown other cooperative societies the way to follow. He said through the project, the society has helped in solving one of the nagging problems in the country by providing accommodation to Nigerian students.

    “You have made name for yourselves. Subsequent executives should not only maintain what you have done but improve on it. Your leadership will look back with some sense of accomplishment,” he said.

    In his address the President the society, Mr Mohammed Toyin Alabi, explained that the society decided to embark on the hostel project to provide a socially-responsible service to the university community, adding that the 50 self-contained rooms Hostel would take 100 students.

     

     

    Alabi also said the Society would set up a committee to oversee the maintenance of the hostel.

    The Vice-Chancellor also inaugurated six shops built at the cost of N2.6 million on a BOT arrangement and managed by the UNILORIN Property Management Board (UPMB).

     

  • VC hailsTETFUND

    Acting Vice-Chancellor of the Ladoke Akintola University in Ogbomoso Oyo State, Prof Adeniyi Gbadegesin, has hailed the management of Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFUND), for its efforts at promoting tertiary education.

    He described the intervention fund as laudable, adding that the university benefited from the programme in 1999.

    TETFUND has embarked on various construction projects in the institution, equipped its laboratories, created of ICT centres, established fully stocked libraries and a stadium.

    However, Gbadegesin urged TETFUND to increase the statutory allocations to universities, saying that it would encourage healthy competition and improve the quality of education in the country.

  • VC makes case for education in Southeast

    The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), Prof Bartho Okolo, has urged journalists to join the campaign for restoring quality education in the Southeast.

    Speaking at the second edition of Southeast Media Summit at Nike Lake Hotel in Enugu, he lamented the decline in enrolment figure of male students in schools in the region, adding that the incidence must be checked.

    He said:“I am using this opportunity to invite journalists across the country to join the campaign for safeguarding the future of our people. There has been a steady decline in the number of children, especially boys, in our schools. This poses serious danger to the future of our region. I urge everyone to join the train of restoring the priority of education in Southeastern Nigeria.’’

    He decried the unwillingness of industrialists in the region to invest in education, saying its consequences were dire for the youths.

    Prof Okolo charged the journalists to be professional and ethical, noting that they have a role to play in the region’sdevelopment of the region.

    He said the Mass communications Department of the institution was ready to partner with journalists to promte the academic excellence of its students.

    “Such a platform has become necessary in the light of recent advances in journalism, especially internet-based publications and social media networks,” said.

  • VC lauds Egba Indigenes

    The FUNAAB Vice-Chancellor, Prof Oyewole, has commended Egba indigenes for their efforts in the development of FUNAAB. He made this commendation while receiving a seven-man Joint Action Committee (JAC), under the aegis of Egba Indigenes Global Association. The VC called for the support of the association, challenging them to make more impact in FUNAAB by erecting structures so as to leave their imprint on the university.

    As part of his effort at making FUNAAB a world-class university, the VC solicited the support of the group to use their clout to help FUNAAB Community Radio get an operating license, which he said will transmit basically agriculture-related programmes.

    In addition, he sought for assistance in the realisation of FUNAAB’s dream of becoming a conventional University.

     

  • UI VC gets new roles

    London-based Association of Commonwealth Universities (ACU) has appointed Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ibadan, Prof Isaac Folorunso Adewole, into its highest governing council to serve for the next two years.

    Adewole, the only Nigerian appointed into the council is expected to join 22 other members drawn from 13 commonwealth countries.

    A letter to that effect signed by ACU Secretary-General, Prof John Wood and addressed to Adewole stated that he will join others to oversee the body’s activities and determine its future direction.

    “We are therefore delighted to have such an experienced and diverse set of university executive heads including the UI VC serving over the next two years”, Prof. Wood said.

    ACU is the world’s first and oldest international university network, established in 1913 with over 500 member institutions in countries across the commonwealth. The council takes all final decisions on matters of fundamental concern to the organisation. Similarly, Adewole, has been appointed into the Ethics Committee of the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC).

    Adewole who is also the President of African Organisation Research and Training in Cancer (AORTIC) war appointed recently to serve in the Lyon, France-based IARC. AORTIC is a specialised cancer agency of the World Health Organisation with the objective of promoting international collaboration in cancer research. It was established in May 1965 through a resolution by the World Health Assembly as an extension of the WHO. Membership has grown to 24 countries.
