Workers reject FG’s planned concession of railways

The Nigeria Union of Railway Workers (NURW) has appealed to the Federal Government to withhold its planned concession of the Nigeria Railway Corporation (NRC).

Mr Segun Esan, the Secretary General of the union, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday in Lagos that there was no reason to defend privatisation and concessioning as policy of economic development.

Esan said that concession has simply reinforced underdevelopment, encourage massive unemployment, with massive corruption and social inequality.

According to him, systems threaten the security and corporate existence of the country since inception of its implementation in the country.

“The policy has been consistently observed that assets of privatised enterprises have been deliberately undervalued.

“There has been no due process with high level collusion between the authorities and the companies that bought the privatised enterprises, leading to failure to pay over the appropriate monies to government coffers.

“The Bureau of Public Enterprise (BPE) has also failed to exercise its oversight functions on the privatisation process,’’ the unions regretted.

He described the policy as an abuse of due process characterised by corruption which has affected the outcome of the exercise.

According to him, the privatisation of the power sector offers another insight into the failure of the system and the fraudulent actions surrounding it.

Esan said that government has also injected huge capital into the sector without corresponding results.

He appealed to the federal government to withdraw its planned concessioning of the corporation to help safeguard selling public asset without appropriate technical valuation with labour disengagement.

NAN recalls that the Federal House of Representatives had at its plenary on Oct. 25, moved to investigate the planned concessioning of the Nigeria Railways Corporation to General Electric (GE) to avoid violating Nigeria’s privatisation laws.

The lawmakers also looked into the moves by the Federal Executive Council (FEC) to concession the Western (Lagos-Kano) and Eastern (Port Harcourt- Maiduguri) rail lines to GE without recourse to the Bureau of Public Enterprises and Privatisation regulations.

NAN further reports that federal government had constituted a 20-member steering committee on the concessioning of the Eastern and Western lines of the Nigeria Railways.

The Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, inaugurated the committee, headed by the Minister of Transportation, Mr Rotimi Amaechi, at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, in August.

    • urges use of technology to address gaps

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo on Tuesday identified training methods for reading and writing as well as the quality of teacher education as the bane of education.

Osinbajo said this in his address to the Annual  Education Conference with the theme“Learning Opportunities for All – The Critical Role of Teachers’’, in Abuja.

He recommended investment in technology and new methods of teaching that could accelerate teaching, reading and writing as the best way to address the challenges.

“There are available methods today that can accelerate teaching, reading and writing.

“But the reason that they are not available in the public schools is because we are not investing enough; not just in technology but in new methods and ensuring that those children in public schools have access to some of the better methods of reading and writing.

“It is my respectful view that it is the responsibility of those of us who are educationists to think through the solutions for delivering relevant education with the very little resources available.’’

The vice president, however, said there was hope because the use of appropriate technology could close the education gap between the children of the rich and the poor.

“I strongly believe that the fastest way to bridge the gap between those who can afford the quality of education and those who cannot is technology.

“Technology also provides the means to leapfrog the huge knowledge gap created daily between the hemispheric North and South.

“Fortunately, technology is becoming cheaper and more intuitive.

“It is, therefore, quite clear that teacher education itself must radically change; teacher training must be technology-driven.

“I also think that a teacher must be trained in a much wider curriculum.

“A teacher must be trained in employability skills, project management, financial management and entrepreneurial skills and technology skills even programming for those who are interested.

“Training this new generation of young people is a new challenge.

“Today, we are training individuals who must learn to multi-task and compete in the global society.

“The best jobs will require complex skill; the good news is that this type of training is available and can be made much cheaper and more available.’’

The vice president expressed the hope that the conference would provide the platform for participants to engage in vigorous debate on some of the important issues affecting the future of education in the country.

According to him, the future of the country depends on education, adding that a lot of issues needed to be resolved, including the ideological underpinning of Education for All.

“Education is a tool of empowerment; the lack or inadequacy of it can also disempower; so, education can create or deepen inequality in the society.

He said such could create a well-educated few with access to best opportunities and others who are simply not qualified enough to take advantage of the best opportunities.

He also noted the huge disparity between the quality of public education at primary and secondary levels and what obtained in private schools in the country, adding that it should be stopped.

According to him, there is segregation in Nigerian schools based on the income and the standard of education of parents.

He said it was important to engage in technology in public schools to bring the quality to the standard in private schools.

The Minister of Education, Malam Adamu Adamu, in his speech, said that the ministry was interested in ensuring that the teaching profession was not a dumping ground for unqualified people.

Adamu said that the low quality of entrance into the profession would be addressed while training institutions would be made to match the demand and supply.

He also said efforts were being made to improve the welfare and incentives for teachers as well as ensure adequate professional development for them.

He said quality education was a right of the citizens, adding that children in disadvantaged and conflict zones must be captured in the provision of quality and inclusive education for all.

In his lead paper on the conference theme, Prof. Kwame Akyeampong of University of Sussex, United Kingdom, said that Nigeria had a wide gap to fill in the global education map.

Akyeampong, however, added that the country had increasing learning opportunities while teachers should close the wide gaps for the development of the country.

He noted that 38 percent of Nigerian school children were not learning the basics in education, which in turn, affected the quality of professionals and teachers in the society.

He underscored the need to produce teachers who could bridge the cultural and religious gaps in the country and advised the administration to improve the learning opportunities for the less privileged.

The don further recommended the adoption of a three-part strategy of improving the quality of teaching as well as developing coherent, systematic approach to managing teachers effectively.

He also suggested the training of teachers who could help to rebuild education services in emergencies.

I was nominated for VP, says Osinbajo

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo on Wednesday night disclosed that he was nominated for the office of the Vice President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria in last year’s Presidential election.

Part of Professor John Paden’s book on the President, titled: “Muhammadu Buhari: Challenges of Leadership in Nigeria,” had claimed that Osinbajo emerged as Vice President despite pressure against it by the National Leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Tinubu.

But many Nigerians had faulted the claim as they insisted that Osinbajo was nominated for the position by Tinubu.

Osinbajo on Wednesday night, during the Dinner organized in honour of outstanding graduants of the Presidential Amnesty Programme at the old Banquet Hall of the Presidential Villa, Abuja, confirmed that he was actually nominated for the position.

He said: “I was in a group of young men and women and one of them asked the question how did I become Vice President, I was never a politician or anything like that. So I tried to explain – it is quite simple that someone somewhere has to recommend you. Somebody somewhere has to give you a helping hand, whether to be a Vice President or to be an aircraft pilot or to be an engineer, somebody somewhere has to give you an opportunity and I think that all of you that are here today are the beneficiaries of the opportunities that you have somehow received.

“And this is why this event is so important. I think that it is one way we have to remind ourselves that we are bound as individuals to give opportunities to everyone.” He added

A representative of the beneficiaries of the programme, Alexander Obiechina, urged the Federal Government to continue to sustain the programme.

According to him, the beneficiaries have collectively resolved to work against vandalism and make militancy to a thing of the past in the region.

Nigeria will become major investment destination soon – Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari on Wednesday assured potential investors that Nigeria would soon become one of the most attractive places to invest as his administration has embarked on significant economic reforms to realize that goal.

He gave the assurance to a large gathering of political and business leaders from the United States, Africa and other regions of the world at the Second United States-Africa Business Forum in New York.

The event was organized by the United States Department of Commerce and Bloomberg Philanthropies.

Buhari, in a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, said the Presidential Enabling Business Environment Council headed by Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo, will soon come out with wide-ranging business environment reforms.

The reforms, he said will be on ports, visa-on arrival, improving the speed and efficiency of land titling and business registration.

Some fiscal incentives, he noted, include up to five years tax holiday for activities classified as “pioneer;” tax-free operations; no restrictions on expatriate quotas in Free Trade Zones and a low VAT regime of five per cent.

Stressing that Nigeria remained the number one investment destination in Africa, he said: “We intend to make Nigeria one of the most attractive places to do business,”

Buhari also said his administration will continue to strengthen government institutions in order to address the concerns of investors and ease investments in the Nigerian economy.

He added: “We are weaning ourselves from a historical dependence on crude oil, diversifying our economy, and putting it on the path of sustainable and inclusive growth. To this end, we have embarked on policies aimed at establishing an open, rules-based and market-oriented economy.

“We will continue to actively engage with the private sector at the highest levels to listen to your concerns and to assure you of our commitment to creating enabling policies in which your businesses can survive and thrive.”

He urged participants to take advantage of the Forum to establish and strengthen business relationships, share valuable experience and collaborate for mutual benefits.

Buhari is relaying foundation of a New Nigeria – Osibanjo

The Vice President, Professor Yemi Osibanjo, SAN, has said the Federal Government under President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, is helping to relay the foundation of Nigeria destroyed by years of neglect.

Osibanjo, who was represented by the Aso Rock Villa Chaplain, Rev. Sheyi Malomo at the ongoing 41st Annual National Conference of the Nigeria Christian Graduate Fellowship (NCGF) held in Benin with the theme: “Let Us Rise Up And Build”, with a text taken from the book of Nehemiah 2:18 said President Buhari’s administration is relaying the foundation for a new Nigeria.

His words: “On assumption of office last year, this administration inherited a badly managed economy with a high level insecurity; we decided from the beginning that we will tackle the challenges without fear.

“By the grace of God the Buhari’s administration is relaying the foundation of a new Nigeria to the Glory of God.

According to Malomo, “We will ensure that there is restoration of all the years the locust have eaten” adding, “The government has introduced a major fiscal measures on hard earn income, first, among which is the full implementation of the Treasury Single Account, ( TSA) which has helped to remove over 40,000 ghost workers from the MDAs which is a huge plus to the Nation”.

To him, “It will also require patience for present administration policies on infrastructures to start manifesting which I believed Nigerians stand to benefit from”, he said.

The President of the Nigeria Christian Graduate Fellowship (NCGF), Dr. Sam Initina who earlier in his remarks said time has come for Christians to rise up to the occasion, said: ” I thank God for steering the ship of the NCGF safely for the past three years of our tenure”.

Sam, however, thanked the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari and all the security forces in the country for recording huge success in the fight against the deadly Boko Haram insurgency adding, that: ” God who has started this great work will see to the total annihilation of this terrorist group.”

His words: “We oppose this plan which will allow these terrorists easy spread throughout the whole Federation where they will continue with their bestial behaviour of raping women, killing farmers, destroying their crops and forcefully taking over their land and houses.”

Perishable cargo exporters lament N100m loss

Exporters of perishable cargo/vegetable have lost a whooping N100 million due to government’s closure of export warehouses of the Nigerian Aviation Handling Company (NAHCO) and the Skyway Aviation Handling Company (SAHCOL) at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos.

The warehouse was shut last week by officials of the Federal Operations Unit of Nigerian Customs Service following a tip off that the  bonded facilities housed  stolen and prohibited items meant for exportation.

This is just as they have stated that government’s closure of the export sheds at the Murtala Muhammed Airport Lagos is sending wrong signals to the comity of international agro-allied supply chain, which portends grave danger for the economy’s agro-allied produce, if not curtailed.

Speaking to journalists in Lagos on Wednesday Chief Executive Officer of ABX World, Captain John Okakpu said  the agro-allied exporters numbering over one hundred are  worried that  such incident is tantamount to economic loss.
He said  international off-takers are developing cold-feet with regard to agricultural produce from Nigeria.

Captain Okakpu, who said the exporters lost over N100million worth of goods within 48-hours the export warehouses were shut.
He called on the Federal Government through the various Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) to  urgently commence full-scale investigations into the immediate and remote causes of the warehouses closure to avoid re-occurrence.

He said  with government’s focus on agriculture as one of the panaceas to the rising inflation, restrictions in capital flows and depleting forex reserves, agro-allied exporters deserve protection as partners.
The warehouse was re-opened last Wednesday.

He said: “Gentlemen, the truth is, we have made fundamental mistakes in the past as a nation by becoming a mono-economy. But, we cannot continue to lick the wounds. We have to reverse the case and agriculture provides us with a better option to grow. That is why as agro-allied exporters, we are seriously worried over the actions of some government officials, who seem not to underestimate the peculiarities of perishable items for export.

“Shutting down the warehouses was actually an indictment on customs, as they (Customs officials) ought to have carried out surveillance before shutting down all export businesses at the Lagos Airport. If such act is not checkmated in future it will compound issues and create a logjam in the system. Or, do we prefer to ship our cargos to countries like Ghana or Cameroun before we can be shipped to Europe and other markets? Presently, the yam sold in Europe as Ghana yams are actually from Nigeria!

“Go and investigate it! Because we seemingly abandoned our God-given potentials ‘to lick oil’, see how the economy has been battered. We wouldn’t want the issues surrounding brown beans and other agricultural produce from Nigeria, to happen to vegetables and other perishables like ginger, garlic, Nsukka-yellow pepper, among others. That is why we are calling on the Federal Government to urgently investigate the matter and punch who ever are the culprits to serve as deterrent to others. So, as Professor Yemi Osibanjo was inaugurating the new agric road map, those warehouses have been shut. What an irony. Enough is enough!”, he said.

He said any action contradicting Federal Government’s agricultural road map  launched by the Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo recently should not be treated with levity.

Supporting Captain Okakpu’s claims, the President, Nigeria Vegetable Exporters Association, Mrs. Oluwatoyin Temitope, said that her company alone lost over N1million worth of cargo within 24-hours of the export shed closure.

She lamented the widespread impact on the Association’s members numbering over 20. She said, “It was a devastating day for us. We work at night so that as early as 6:00am our partner airline Arik Air would ship the vegetables. So, when the news got to us that customs have shut down both NAHCO and SAHCOL export shed my blood pressure shoot up.

“I have been on this business for over 30 years; exporting vegetables to South Africa and London almost every week. Unfortunately, the Customs Service and some other government agencies do not have regard for us. They do not any way intimate us before embarking on any clamp down. They know who are engaging in illegal businesses. Ask them, who cleared the items in the first place! In countries like Uganda and Ghana, vegetable/perishable goods exporters are accorded special attention; why is our different?”

Mrs. Temitope said that the Association members merit to be compensated by the government hence they are legitimately contributing their quota to the development of the economy.

“Most of us do take bank facilities, so when occasions like this occur you can imagine how difficult it becomes for us to meet up with the demands. Aside that, there are other markets offering more conducive environment; the principal reason most exporters now prefer Ghana to Nigeria. Customs have arrogated powers to themselves to the extent armored tanks were sent to the airport in hunt of illegal exporters whereas no items goes out of Nigeria without passing through Customs clearance. In fact, it should be investigated properly, maybe some secret or unknown forces sabotaging the county will be uncovered”, she added.

Also, Veronica Ezigbo, managing director of Kiverlin Foods said that the incident should be thoroughly investigated, citing the impact as a negation of President Muhammadu Buhari’s change mantra.

She said, “The impact is very huge, because we deal on perishable goods. We are ordinary citizens of this country and do not deserve this kind of treatment. Customs officials know the people they are searching for, where and how to catch them. They acted ignorantly, because our line of business is very competitive; if you fail to deliver within few hours the vegetables get damaged too.

“Think of it, our dear country is faced forex challenges. Is it not common sense that exporters should be encouraged? It takes a lot of stress to conduct this business, especially when Government no financial facility for us. We demand that this matter should not be swept under the carpet. If Nigeria will move forward, if we are sincere about agriculture, then, special recognition should be given to exporters like us”.

Atorise declares interest as GOMAN Vice President

Nigerian leading gospel singer, Lanre Teriba, has declared his interest in becoming the Vice President of Gospel and Music Association of Nigeria (GOMAN).

The singer who is fondly called Atorise made this known while addressing his alleged expulsion from GOMAN.

According to him, “I remember that I am a professional artiste and I am still a full-time member of GOMAN. And anytime soon, I am coming out as the vice president of GOMAN.”

Atorise further addressed the rumour that trailed his personality and the association. “Rumor is normal, it is when you are relevant that people get to talk about you; when you are not a relevant artiste people won’t say anything about you. Indisputably, it is one of those things we pay for, being a star.”

The controversial artiste also lamented the support the Nigerian entertainment industry is lacking from the President Buhari-led administration.

“President Muhammadu Buhari has nothing to offer the entertainment industry,” he said.

He said this in reference to the terrible state of Nigerian economy as well as Buhari’s lack of plans for the entertainment industry.

”I see President Muhammadu Buhari as someone who doesn’t like entertainment at all and indisputably, this will affect the industry”. He further claimed.

His debut album, titled Atorise made him a prominent face in the gospel world.

However, despite his huge success recorded in his musical career, controversies has been trailing his brand as an inspirational artiste.
