  • Surveyor in court over alleged N8.2m fraud

    A 32-year-old surveyor, Oluwadamilare Mustapha, was on Thursday arraigned in an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court, for allegedly defrauding a man of N8.2million.

    Mustapha, who resides at No. 46, Kokorabu St., Ikorodu, Lagos State, was charged with obtaining money under false pretences and stealing.

    The prosecutor, Inspector Victor Eruada, told the court that Mustapha committed the alleged offences between January and June , 2014, in Ikorodu.

    He alleged that Mustapha obtained N8.2 million from the complainant, Mr Ajibade Adesanya, on the pretext of assisting him to acquire 23 plots of land at Ijede, Ikorodu.

    “Mustapha collected N8.2 million from the complainant on the pretext of selling the land to him, which he never did,” the prosecutor said.

    Eruada said that when the complainant demanded for refund, Mustapha failed to refund the money.

    The offences contravened the provisions of Sections 287 and 314 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 (Revised).

    Mustapha denied committing the offences.

    The News Agency of Nigeria reports that Section 314 prescribes 15 years jail term for obtaining money under false pretences.

    The Magistrate, Mrs M.I. Dan-Oni, granted Mustapha bail in the sum of N1million with two sureties in like sum and adjourned the case until November 20 for mention.

  • Two in court for stealing laptop, phone

    Two men, Michael Ibironke, 21, and Azeez Adedeji, 28, who allegedly burgled a house and stole a laptop and a phone, valued at N253,000 were on Monday docked before an Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court, Lagos.

    Ibironke, an electrician; and Adedeji, a bet 9ja agent; both residing at No 8, Bode St., Agege, Lagos, are being tried for burglary, conspiracy and stealing.

    The Prosecutor, Insp. Victor Eruada, told the court that the offences were committed on July 7 at the same address.

    Eruada said that the accused burgled the room of one Mr Michael Adeleye and carted away a laptop and mobile phone valued at N253, 000.

    “The duo gained access to the room of the complainant through the burglar proof of the window.

    “The duo stole a laptop and a mobile phone kept in the house,’’ Eruada said.

    The prosecutor said that the accused succeeded in stealing the items and were about escaping when they were caught by other neighbours.

    The offences contravened Sections 287, 306 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

    The accused, however, entered a not guilty plea.

    The Chief Magistrate, Mrs M.I. Dan-Oni, admitted the accused to bail in the sum of N100, 000 with two sureties in like sum.

    Dan-Oni adjourned the case until Aug.20, for mention.

  • Car dealer in court for alleged fraud

    A 40-year-old car dealer, Taiwo Olorunisola, who allegedly defrauded a customer of N2.5million was on Monday arraigned before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court, Lagos.

    Olorunisola, who resides at No. 10, Wale Adesina St., Oke-Aro in Lagos, is facing a two-count charge of obtaining under false pretence and stealing.

    The Police prosecutor, Insp. Victor Eruada, told the court that the accused committed the offences on August 8, 2017 at about 1.00 p.m. at Ijaiye Ojokoro in Lagos.

    Eruada alleged that the accused collected N2.5 million from the complainant, Mr Akinbiyi Adepoju, to buy a Lexus RX 300 car from Cotonou, a representation he knew was false.

    He said the accused diverted the money to his personal use after he took the complainant to Cotonou to choose the car he wanted.

    “The accused later told the complainant that the car was seized by customs,” he said.

    Eruada said the offences contravened Sections 287 and 314 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 (Revised).

    Report has it that Section 287 stipulates a seven-year imprisonment for stealing, while Section 314 prescribes a 15-year jail term for false pretence.

    The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

    The Magistrate, Mrs Dan Oni, granted the accused bail in the sum of N500, 000 with two sureties in like sum.

    Oni said the sureties should be gainfully employed and show evidence of two years tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

    The case was adjourned to June 28, for continuation of hearing.

  • Two men in court for alleged gang rape of girl in bush

    Two men, Peter Ugbe, 32, and Hamed Alao, 25, appeared in an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court for alleged gang rape of a 20-year-old girl inside the bush.

    Ugbe and Alao, who reside in Iju-Ishaga Area of Lagos, had pleaded not guilty to a three-count charge of rape, conspiracy and assault.

    The Prosecutor, Insp. Victor Eruada, told the court that the accused persons and one other still at large, committed the offence on March 18, at Cele Bus-Stop, Iju-Ishaga, a Lagos Suburb.

    Eruada said that the accused and his accomplice accosted the girl, assaulted her with a cutlass and forced her to the bush and gang raped her.

    “It was a passer-by who heard her shouting for help from the bush and alerted other people. Ugbe and Alao were apprehended, ” Eruada told the court.

    He said that the offence contravened sections 260, 411 and 171 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015. The News men reports that Section 260 prescribes life imprisonment for offenders upon conviction.

    The Magistrate, Mrs Dan Oni, admitted the accused to bail in the sum of N50,000 each with two sureties in like sum. Oni adjourned the case until April 23, for trial.

    Bus conductor faces break-in, attempted stealing charge

    A 25-year-old bus conductor, Tajudeen Oyekan, who allegedly broke into a house to steal, on Wednesday appeared before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court.

    Oyekan, who resides in Abattoir Agege, Lagos, pleaded not guilty to a three-count charge of intent to commit felony, breach of peace and conspiracy brought against him.

    According to the Prosecutor, Insp. Victor Eruada, the accused committed the offences with one person still at large on Jan.1 at No. 56, Aina Aladi St., Ilapo Estate, Alagbado, a Lagos Suburb.

    Eruada said the accused broke the window of the house of the complainant, Mr Christan Clement, with a hammer to gain entry to steal his property.

    “Luck ran against him as he was caught and beaten by the people in the compound who handed him over to the police.’’

    The offences contravened Section 168, 311 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

    The accused may be jailed seven years, if found guilty, according to Section 311. Section also prescribes two years for conspiracy.

    In her ruling, the Magistrate, Mrs G.O. Anifowoshe, granted the accused bail in the sum of N50, 000 with one surety in like sum and adjourned the case until Feb. 28.

    Court arraigns man for assaulting police officer

    A 39-year-old tricycle driver, Agboola Seun, who allegedly assaulted a police officer, was on Wednesday brought before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court,  Lagos.

    Seun, who resides at No. 3, Iresi St., Orile-Agege, Lagos, is facing a two-count charge of assault and conspiracy.

    The Prosecutor, Insp. Victor Eruada, told court that the accused committed the offences with some others still at large on Aug. 21 at Iyana-Ipaja, a Lagos suburb.

    Eruada said the accused beat up Sgt. Okoyomo Emmanuel, who tried to arrested him for a traffic offence.

    “The accused and his accomplice descended on him and beat him to a pulp.”

    The offences contravened Sections 172 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 (Revised).

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 172 prescribes a three-year jail term for assault, while Section 411 provides two years for conspiracy.

    The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

    The Magistrate, Mrs G.O. Anifowoshe, granted him bail in the sum of N25, 000 with two sureties in like sum.

    He said the sureties should be gainfully employed and should show evidence of a two-year tax payments to the Lagos State Government.

    Anifowoshe adjourned the case until Sept. 20 for mention.

    Court docks man for motorcycle theft

    A 26-year-old commercial motorcyclist, Peter Ogunbiyi, was on Wednesday charged before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court for allegedly stealing a motorcycle valued at N225,000.

    Ogunbiyi, who lives at No. 5, Matogun Road, Ogun on then Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, is facing a two-count charge of conspiracy and stealing.

    The accused, however, denied the charges.

    But the prosecutor, Insp. Victor Eruada, told the court that the accused and others at large committed the offences on Aug. 9 at Olusesi Bus Stop, Iju Ishaga, a Lagos suburb.

    He said the accused stole the motorcycle from where it was parked in the night, property of the complainant, Mr Jagun Fatai.

    “The accused was later apprehended by a security guard.”

    The offences contravened Sections 287 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 287 stipulates a three-year jail term for stealing, while Section 411 provides two years for conspiracy.

    The Magistrate, Mrs G. O. Anifowoshe, granted the accused bail in the sum of N200, 000 with two sureties like sum and adjourned the case until Sept. 19 for trial.

    Technician in court for stealing foodstuff

    A 28-year-old generator technician, Kazeem Osulana, on Monday appeared before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court, charged with breaking into a shop and stealing foodstuff, worth N40,000.

    Osulana, whose address was not provided, is facing a two-count charge of burglary and stealing.

    The Prosecutor, Insp Victor Eruada, told the court that the accused committed the offences on July 26 at No. 30, Amosun Str., Oko-Oba in Lagos State.

    He said the accused broke into the shop of the complainant, one Gloria Umanah, and stole half a bag of rice valued at N10, 000, blending machine valued N20,000 and some packets of Semovita also valued at N10,000.

    “Umanah received a telephone call informing her that Osulana broke into her shop to steal but had been caught,” the prosecutor said.

    The offences contravened Section 287 and 309 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

    However, Osulana pleaded not guilty to the charges.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that section 309 prescribes a three-year jail term for the offence of stealing.

    The Magistrate, Mrs G.O. Anifowoshe, in her ruling, granted the accused N40, 000 bail with two sureties in like sum.

    Anifowoshe said the sureties, who should be a blood relation of the accused, should also show evidence of three years tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

    She adjourned the case until Aug. 30 for mention.
