    Estate agent docked over N1m fraud

    A 38-year-old estate agent, Badiru Ayinde, who allegedly duped five people of N1 million on the pretext of procuring a self-contain apartment for them, was on Thursday arraigned in an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court.

    Eruada said Ayinde, a resident of Meiran Area of Lagos, committed the offences on April 25, at Agbatikuyo Dopemu, Agage, Lagos.

    According to him, the accused collected N255, 000 from Abbas Abba, N150,000 from Omikunle Esther, N210,000 from Akingbohungbe Adebayo.

    “He also collected N170, 000 from Ojo Samuel, and N260, 000 from Zubair Mohammed with a promise to procure apartments for them which he never did.

    “The accused collected the money and failed to get the apartments as promised, and he converted the money to his personal use.”

    The offences contravened Sections 287, 168 and 314 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 287 provides 14 years imprisonment for offenders, while Section 314 stipulates 15 years for obtaining credit by false pretence.

    However, the accused pleaded not guilty to the 10-count charge.

    The Magistrate, Mrs G. O. Anifowoshe, granted the accused bail in the sum of N500, 000 with two sureties in like sum.

    Anifowoshe adjourned the case until July 26, for mention.

    Vulcanizer charged with bag-snatching

    A 27-year-old vulcanizer, Olatunbosun Adeniyi, charged with snatching a bag containing phone and other valuables worth N42, 000, on Wednesday appeared before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court .

    Adeniyi, who resides in Oko-Oba area of Agege, Lagos, is facing a three-count-charge bordering on stealing and conspiracy.

    He, however, denied the charge.

    But the Police Prosecutor, Insp. Victor Eruada, said the accused committed the offences on June 3 on Social Club Road, Oko-Oba in Abule Egba area of Lagos.

    He said the accused with two others still at large, attacked the complainant,  Mrs Oluwaferanmi Bose, and snatched her handbag containing an Infinix hot phone and other items valued at N42, 000.

    Eruada said the accused attacked the complainant about 1:00 p.m. on her way back from church and snatched her bag.

    “They stole the phone, N7, 000 and a handbag valued at N5,000.”

    “The complainant raised an alarm and passers-by pursued them and caught the accused, while others escaped.”

    The prosecutor said the accused also attacked a man, Balogun Olarewaju, and stole his Nokia phone valued at N10,000 and N9,000.

    The offences contravened Sections 287 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 (Revised).

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 287 prescribes a three-year jail term for stealing, while Section
    411 stipulates two years imprisonment for conspiracy.

    The Magistrate, Mrs G.O. Anifowoshe, admitted the accused to bail of N50, 000 each with two sureties each in
    like sum.

    She adjourned the case until June 22 for mention.

    Bricklayer in court for inflicting injuries on man

    A 32-year-old bricklayer, Afeez Alawode, who allegedly beat and stabbed one Folawe Abdulrasheed, with a broken bottle, was arraigned in an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday.

    Abdulrasheed, who lives at No. 27, Ifelodun St. Off Elliot Bus-Stop, Iju, Lagos, is facing a two-count charge of assault and inflicting injuries. He, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.
    According to the prosecutor, Insp. Victor Eruada, the accused and one other still at large, committed the offences on May 2 at Galilee Avenue, Iju, Lagos.
    He said the accused beat up and stabbed Abdulrasheed with a broken bottle twice on his left hand and stomach, inflicting serious injuries on him.‎‎
    “Alawode assaulted Abdulrasheed because he refused to buy him indomie he requested.”‎‎
    The offences contravened Sections 172 and 244 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 (Revised).‎‎
    The Magistrate, Mrs. G.O. Anifowoshe, granted the accused bail in the sum of N100, 000 with two sureties in like sum.‎
    The court adjourned the case until June 5 for mention.

  • Three arraigned for theft of company’s diesel

    Three men, who allegedly stole 150 litres of company diesel worth N30, 000, were on Monday brought before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court.

    Israel Umoh, 27; David Dashagh, 22; and Umoru Musa, 22; whose addresses were not provided, are facing a two-count charge of stealing and conspiracy.

    They pleaded not guilty to the charge.

    The prosecutor, Insp. Victor Eruada, told the court that the accused committed the offences at Oregun Freight Company Limited, Ikeja, Lagos, on April 16.

    He said that the accused, who were workers at the Freight Company Limited, conspired to steal the diesel.

    The offences contravene Sections 285 and 409 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 285 prescribes a three-year jail term for one convicted of stealing, while Section 409 stipulates two years for conspiracy.

    The Magistrate, Mrs. G.O. Anifowoshe, admitted the accused to N20, 000 bail, with two sureties in like sum.

    She said the sureties must be blood relations of the accused, gainfully employed, and should show evidence of two years’ tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

    Anifowoshe adjourned the case until May 25 for mention.

     

  • Civil servant arraigned for N25, 000 theft

    A 46-year-old civil servant, Sunkanmi Akinfenwa, who allegedly stole N25, 000 cash, was on Thursday brought before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court, Lagos.

    Akinfenwa, a resident of Market Street, in Agege area of Lagos, is facing a charge of stealing.

    He, however, entered a not guilty plea.

    The Prosecutor, Insp. Victor Eruada, told the court that the accused committed the offence on April 21, at Market Street, Agege, and Lagos.

    Eruada said that the accused came to the shop of the complainant, Mr Abdulsalam Adamu, acting as if he wanted to buy Indomie.

    “But in the process of being given the item, he stole the sum of N25, 000 kept in the carton.

    “When Adamu discovered that his money had disappeared, he saw the accused running away, but he shouted for help and the accused was immediately apprehended by passers-by,” he said.

    The offence, the prosecutor said, contravened Section 285 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 (Revised).

  • Two docked for stealing N13, 500

    Two boys who allegedly stole N13, 500 cash from a woman were on Thursday brought before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court in Lagos.

    James Peter, 20, and Seyi Idowu, 18, whose addresses were not provided, are facing a two-count charge of stealing and conspiracy.

    They, however, entered a `not guilty’ plea.

    But the Prosecutor, Insp. Victor Eruada, told the court that the accused committed the offences on April 25 at Karaole Estate, Ogba, in Lagos.

    According to him, the accused entered the same tricycle with the complainant, one Chioma Martins, who sat at the middle, but when she alighted, she discovered that her N13, 500 cash had disappeared from her pocket.

    “She shouted for help and the accused were apprehended immediately by passers-by.”

    Their offences contravene Section 285 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 (Revised).

    The section stipulates a three-year jail term for convicted offenders.

    The Magistrate, Mrs. G.O. Anifowoshe, admitted the accused to bail in the sum of N10, 000 with two sureties in like sum.

    She said the sureties must be gainfully employed and should also show evidence of tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

    Anifowoshe adjourned the case until May 22, for mention.
