  • Moses quits Super Eagles

Chelsea wingback, Victor Moses, has announced his retirement from international football.

He disclosed this in a statement on his verified Instagram page Wednesday.

Moses said he took the decision in order to focus on his club career and family.

He said: “I would like to announce that after much thought I have decided to retire from international football.

“I have experienced some of the best moments of my life wearing the Super Eagles shirt and have memories with me that will last a lifetime.

“Nothing will ever compete to what it felt like to represent Nigeria.

“However, I feel that now is the right time to step away in order to focus fully on club career and my young family.  This decision will also give the next generation of Super Eagles stars the opportunity to step up and flourish. We are blessed as a nation to have so many exciting young players coming through and now is their time.

“There are so many highlights that stand out for me over the years; from making my debut, to playing in two World Cups and being part of the team that won the African Nations Cup for first time for our nation since 1994.

“I have already spoken to the manager on telephone and would like to say thank you to him and his staff, the NFF and all of my teammates for their support over the years. Most importantly, I would like to say thank you to the Nigerian people for believing in me and supporting me over the years. It is very important to me and my family and I will always be a proud Nigerian supporting the team. Thank you for the memories and good luck to the team for the future.”

  • Chelsea is a big club – Moses

    Moses

Victor Moses is looking forward to a successful season under Maurizio Sarri despite the cloud of uncertainty in securing a starting shirt under the new Chelsea manager.

Moses was one of the players that was handed a regular spot under former manager Antonio Conte, but the Nigerian international is not sure of pinning down a shirt under Sarri.

The Italian boss has been tasked with steering Chelsea FC back into the top four at the very least after they finished in fifth place and won the FA Cup under Conte last term.

Speaking in an interview with Chelsea FC’s website, Moses said: “We’re looking forward to it.

“Obviously we have a new manager now, he’s got a new philosophy and we’re looking good in training. We just want to work hard together as a team and make sure we understand what he wants from us and do the best we can this season.

“Chelsea is a big club. It’s a club with a great history, we’ve won loads of big trophies, and we always want to do that.

“With the players we’ve got and ability that we’ve got, we just want to keep on working hard together to make the club great and keep doing well.”

The west London side is getting to grips with life under their new boss after he was drafted in as Antonio Conte’s successor at Stamford Bridge last month.

Recall that Sarri’s Chelsea FC side were beaten 2-0 in the Community Shield by Premier League champions Manchester City on Sunday afternoon at the Wembley stadium as they struggled against Pep Guardiola’s side.

And the Nigerian duo of Victor Moses and Tammy Abraham both started on the substitute bench for the West London side.

  • Chelsea vs Man City: Moses eyes Community Shield title

Super Eagles winger Victor Moses is on the verge of adding Community Shield title to his collections as Chelsea file out against Manchester City at the wembley Stadium on Sunday. Moses has premier league, FA Cup and Europa titles in the kitty and victory at the Wembley on Sunday will be another feather

The former Wigan Athletic ace who converted a penalty for the Super Eagles at the World cup in Russia is being tipped to lift the Blues even as new coach Maurizio Sarri is hoping to win a title even before his first season at the Stamford Bridge.

The Italian took over from compatriot Antonio Conte last month after nearly wrestling the Serie A title from Juventus with old club Napoli last season.

He could become the first Premier League manager since David Moyes in 2013 in the same competition to win a trophy in his first game.

Sarri said: “First of all I’m looking forward to playing at Wembley, because it’s my first time. The match will be very difficult for us.

“I want to win, because it’s very important to have a trophy immediately.

City manager Pep Guardiola is looking forward to starting a new rivalry with Sarri, and says his style will adapt quickly

to the Premier League – having himself struggled with implementing his own style of play before City cruised to the title last season.

Chelsea are looking to win the Community Shield for the first time since 2009, when they beat Manchester United 4-1 on penalties. They’ve failed to win any of their last four appearances in the Community Shield.

Manchester City on the other hand last lifted the Community Shield in 2012, interestingly defeating Chelsea 3-2 in a fixture that was played at Villa Park.

This will be the third meeting between Chelsea and Manchester City at Wembley, with City winning the most recent one in April 2013 (2-1 in the FA Cup semi-final).

Chelsea have lost each of their last two games against Manchester City – they haven’t lost three in succession against them since September 2010.

  • Moses misses Chelsea’s first pre-season training

Nigeria international Victor Moses was among the Chelsea players missing during the club’s first pre- season training last Saturday ahead of the new English Premier League season.

The Chelsea right wing back who has since returned to London has been given some weeks off to rest after representing Nigeria at the FIFA World Cup.

Although, it could not be ascertained when Moses who scored Nigeria’s only goal against Argentina would resume, it is however believed it could be before Chelsea face Perth Glory in a friendly on July 23.

After the friendly, Chelsea will take part in the International Champions Cup scheduled for end of the month.

Some of the players who were present at Saturday’s training were Alvaro Morata, Ross Barkley, Pedro, Marcos Alonso and Danny Drinkwater which was under the supervision of Antonio Conte.

Conte is still in charge, but will hand over to Maurizio Sarri next week according to reports.

  • Expect no less than before at Russia 2018 as quarter-finals get underway

The 2018 FIFA World Cup enters the quarter-finals stage on Friday, with the France versus Uruguay fixture at Nizhny Novgorod kicking off a two-day line-up of four potentially-explosive matches.

The quarter-finals have come with the usual expectations and surprise element of any tournament of this nature, yet they have not come without a trace of the unexpected.

The first round/group phase did not do so much to shock us, other than see off title-holders Germany, world number 10 Poland and the five African sides.

However, the Round of 16 has lived up to expectations, not just with the exit of 2010 champions Spain, two-times champions Argentina and Portugal, but the teams’ star players.

Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi, Sergio Aguero, Andres Iniesta, Isco, Diego Costa, Angel Di Maria,Gonzalo Higuain, Ricardo Quaresma, Sergio Ramos and Javier Mascherano are now watching the competition from their homes.

They joined the likes of Tony Kroos, Thomas Muller, Mikel Obi, Victor Moses, Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane, Manuel Neuer and Robert Lewandowski who had been on the sidelines pretty much earlier.

Their situation, very much unfavoured, is what the likes of Luis Suarez and Edinson Cavani, as well as Paul Pogba, Antoine Griezmann and Kylian Mbappe will now try to avoid.

France with their array of megastars such as Pogba, Mbappe, Griezmann, Olivier Giroud and N’Golo Kante will be wary of what Suarez and Cavani can do upfront.

But the Uruguayan defence line should worry them much more, with the Atletico Madrid defensive pair of Diego Godin and Jose Gimenez at the centre of affairs.

Later on Friday, Belgium who made an incredible comeback from two goals down to win 3-2 will face Brazil at Kazan and knowing that a confrontation with Brazil or Belgium awaits.

Brazil should rather be wary of Belgium, with Eden Hazard and Romelo Lukaku, have gone 23 games unbeaten and have the best record at this tournament so far.

They have won all their matches so far, scoring 12 and conceding four goals, but the grittiness which saw them through against Japan is something Brazil will need much of.

Brazil have struggled to survive against Switzerland, Costa Rica and Serbia, in spite of Neymar, Willian, Philippe Coutinho, Roberto Firmino, Casemiro, Gabriel Jesus and Marcelo not looking out of form.

However, the fact that they have not conceded again since the only goal against Switzerland in their opening match is something Belgium will have to think a lot about.

England have been thinking so much that they now have a good chance of another World Cup win since 1966, with the tournament draw being good to them.

They do not to have to face the likes of France, Uruguay, Brazil or Belgium until July 15, and they feel Sweden may not be too much headache.

But when they face off on Saturday in Samara, they will have to contend with a side which has shown so much resilience, even in the absence of Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

They beat The Netherlands and Italy in qualifying for Russia, made life difficult for Germany and beat South Korea and Mexico in Russia, and eliminated Switzerland in the Round of 16.

Usually a quiet side, Sweden can bring down England if they keep under check Harry Kane and Jesse Lingard, as well as likely substitutes Marcus Rashford and Jamie Vardy.

The good thing for the Swedes is that, in spite of Kane’s leading goalscorer status, England do not have what they do not have, and this makes the game balanced.

Russia have not disappointed so far, and it is a good preview for them as they head to Fisht Stadium in Sochi to host Croatia on Saturday.

It is a likely quiet and not-extraordinary game, with Russia being the lowest FIFA-ranked team at the tournament.

While Russian hopes have risen since the penalty kicks shootout defeat of Spain, it may just serve the hosts well not to count their chickens b efore they are hatched.

Luka Modric and Ivan Rakitic have provided the needed midfield inspiration, while Mario Mandzukic and Ivan Perisic have spearheaded offensive runs which have produced not goals but team game stability.

The Croats are aware of their capability and Modric, while speaking at their pre-match press conference on Wednesday, said team compatibility is a weapon they would use to great effect.

“We know it is going to be tough against Russia, especially as they are the hosts, but we know ourselves and what we can do. We will do it as expected,’’ he said.

However, will they be able to reenact the performance that led them to the 1998 semi-finals in France, having to play against a team and its expectant nation of 144 million?

It is however Russia’s best World Cup run since the 1966 semi-finals appearance, and they will want to go further than this quarter-finals stage not just because they are the hosts.

They have shown good strength of character with the way they overcame Spain, and swung their compatriots who never believed in them before behind them.

While they can shock the Croats, and which can happen, it may just be one other shock in a tournament that is still capable of bringing up more shocks.

  • Technical transformation, sacrifice by Mikel helped in beating Iceland – Rohr

Nigeria’s coach Gernot Rohr on Friday said his team’s 2-0 defeat of Iceland was all down to technical transformation and sacrifices by the duo of Mikel Obi and Victor Moses.

Nigeria beat Iceland 2-0 at the Volgograd Arena in a Group D match at the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia, with the win pushing them into contention for qualification.

Rohr who spoke at the post-match conference also praised his team and coaching staff for working hard to achieve the victory.

“We changed our formation to 3-5-2 and it was good for us. It was a different style in defence.

“Kenneth (Omeruo) is so strong in the air and we needed that to cut off the crosses by Iceland into the box and also the set-pieces.

“The players, as well as all the staff, worked so hard in the past six days or so for us to be ready for Iceland and be able to achieve this.

“Everybody was not happy after that loss to Croatia and we all realised that we must get going to be able to realise our dreams,’’ he said.

The coach added that the team also benefited from the sacrifice made by the duo of Obi and Moses who opted to play as needed and asked of them.

“Mikel has in the last two years been playing as an offensive midfielder, especially now in China, while Victor has been playing as a forward. But we needed them to play in different roles today.

“We needed to convince them to make the sacrifice for their country, and they accepted. They played so well in these roles and the team and their country benefited.

“It is not easy having to do so, especially when you have to combine defensive duties with offensive duties. But the team is now the better for their sacrifice,’’ he said.

Rohr also praised two-goal hero Ahmed Musa, saying his speed as well as his work rate helped a lot in pushing back Iceland in the second half especially.

“We realised at half-time that we needed to do something to change the game, and that was why we brought in Tyronne Ebuehi to add more offensive force on the left flank.

“Musa now added to it with his speed, and this changed the game for us. By the time we did more of counter-attacks, and with quick passes in the middle we had the game in control,’’ he said.

The coach nonetheless praised Iceland for their game, saying “they gave us a good fight, they were fair and showed good attitude, even after the game’’.

Nigeria will now face Argentina on Tuesday in St Petersburg needing at least a draw to qualify for the Round of 16.

    Kelechi Iheanacho

Having represented the Super Eagles 14 times in the senior level already, this 21 year old striker is deemed to be one of Africa’s brightest young players.

His trio with OdionIghalo and Victor Mosses has been a key to Nigeria’s dominance in the qualifiers having lost only once in the campaign. His stellar performance for his nation, 9 goals in 13 appearances, promises a performance worth watching out for in Moscow.

    KalidouKoulibaly

You know this central back from his fantastic season at his club, Napoli. His part in the club winning the crown of Serie A almost after thirty years has been instrumental.

Having scored 4 times for apoli this season, this towering defender is also a threat at the other end. His calm yet commanding presence at the back made him a front runner of the African Player of the Year, only losing out to the impeccable Mohamed Salah.

No wonder, Koulibaly will be quite a treat to watch when Senegal battles out in June.

    Sadio Mane

Mane is expected to be the star player in Senegal’s line up in Russia. Amendments are in order for the missed penalty at the African Nations Cup last year from the winger,  which would be enough motivation to the Liverpool star to dazzle on the field.

Having thoroughly established himself, this 25 year old managed to score 14 times with 8 assists in just 29 appearance for the Reds.

With Mane bringing his best form to Russia, Senegal might exceed expectations in Russia.

    Mohamed Salah

For the past 11 months, Mo Salah is playing the best football of his life. The African Player of the Year netted a exhilarating 35 times in 39 appearances for Liverpool and 33 times in 57 appearances for his nation.

An in-form Salah will not only let Egypt cruise on his shoulders, but also bring to Russia a spectacle to behold.

  • Appreciative Moses pays tribute to supportive fans

    *shifts attention to World cup

Super Eagles and Chelsea winger Victor Moses has given his teeming fans a pat on the back for supporting him and the Blues leading to the FA triumph on Saturday.

The former Crystal Palace ace insisted that the Stamford Bridge landlords ended the season on a high despite failing in their bid to finish in the top four. Moses who has been given express permission by Coach Gernot Rohr to stay away from the friendly tie against Congo to enable him rest, said he is now ready to focus on the forth coming world cup in Russia.

“Just want to say a huge thanks to all the fans who have supported me and the team this season at @ChelseaFC . Glad we could end it on a high for you on Saturday! Also included in that list is Mohammed Salah who scored 32 goals for Liverpool this season successfully pushing the Reds to a top four finish.. • Victor Moses lifts FA Cup with Chelsea at Wembley

Super Eagles’ star, Victor Moses was in action for Chelsea on Saturday as they defeated Manchester united to win the FA Cup for the eight time.

Eden Hazard’s first-half penalty proved the difference at the Wembley stadium.

United improved in the second period and probably deserved an leveler. However, Thibaut   Courtois made some important saves to deny United  with Paul Pogba missing an absolute sitter

Player rating for match shows that Moses who was in action for 90 minutes was a class of second best of players in the game that left  Jose Mourinho side defeated.

Moses who was sent out in the last FA Cup final against Arsenal last year was today marked 6 in the same class with Fabrigas, Kante, Alonso, Hasard and Giroud in the players rating for the match.

    PLAYER RATINGS

    Chelsea: Courtois (8), Azpilicueta (6), Cahill (8), Rudiger (7), Moses (6), Fabregas (6), Kante (8), Bakayoko (6), Alonso (6), Hazard (8), Giroud (6).

    Subs: Morata (5), Willian (5).

    Man Utd: De Gea (6), Valencia (5), Smalling (6), Jones (5), Young (5), Herrera (6), Matic (6), Pogba (5), Lingard (5), Rashford (6), Sanchez (5).

    Subs: Mata (5), Lukaku (6), Martial (6).

Man of the match: Eden Hazard

Meanwhile Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho as said Chelsea did not deserve to win.

His words, “I congratulate them because they won but I don’t think they deserved to win.

“I congratulated them. I am Manchester United manager and I have to be respectful, not just because they are my previous club but because they are the opponents today but I think we deserved to win.

“I am quite curious to know what you say or what people write because if my team plays like Chelsea did I can imagine what people would say. I am quite curious.

“It was a bit hard for us to play without Lukaku against a team that defends with nine players. You need that presence. Every defeat hurts but I go home with the feeling we gave everything. No regrets.

“Chelsea are not stupid. They know our team without Lukaku or Fellaini does not have a presence so putting eight or nine players in front of the box they knew they would be dominant in that direct football. We tried everything by other ways but they had a huge block of compacted players.

“The image of the game is that David de Gea did not touch the ball. He touched the ball to grab it in the net.”

  • FA CUP: Moses eager to sing victory song at wembley

Super Eagles and Chelsea forward Victor Moses says he has forgotten the disappointment of last year in the FA Cup and is determined to help the Blues sing victory song on Saturday.

The former Wigan Athletic ace who is one of the players being tipped to shine at the World cup in Russia was handed the marching orders for diving in the encounter that ended 2-1 in favour of Arsenal. Moses however said all that now belongs to the past as another opportunity has presented itself for him to make amends on one hand and for the Blues to claim victory on the other.

“It played on my mind a little bit but it’s happened. I can’t rewind it back now,” Nigeria international Moses said, reflecting upon a sapping end to his best campaign as a professional.

“It’s just something that happens in football but you’ve got to move on.

“It’s definitely the worst feeling I’ve experienced in my career. I want to be on the pitch to help my team-mates and it’s not nice.

“But we’re back in another final and I’m looking forward to it.”

Chelsea return to Wembley in contrasting shape to a year ago.

The defending champions limped to fifth and Conte has fielded questions throughout the campaign over his future – a 3-0 thumping at Newcastle United on the final day of the Premier League season doing little to shake the impression the ex-Italy and Juventus coach’s tenure is drawing to a close.

Moses sat that one out at St James’ Park and has urged a diligent focus from his team-mates with silverware at stake.

“Every single one of us has got to stay focused, do what the manager asks of us to do on the pitch and try to win,” he said.

“It’s always a tough game whenever we play United. They’ve got quality players and so have we.

“The most important thing is to stay concentrated and make sure we win it.”

Conte and Jose Mourinho’s tempestuous relationship means there will be plenty of focus on the dugouts this weekend, although Moses feels he has nothing to prove to a manager who did not give him the chances to shine granted by his current boss.

“To be honest, I just want to play my football,” he added. “It’s nothing to do with Jose. I’m a Chelsea player and winning that final is the most important thing.”
