  • Can I be a Secondary Virgin?

DEAR Aunty Temilolu, Why should a girl keep her virginity till she’s married?

    Ibukun, 14

    Dear Aunty Temilolu,

Since I stumbled on your column a few months ago, I’ve been addicted to reading you and my life has never been the same. I now have a change of heart about sex, amongst other things. However, it saddens my heart that I’m no longer a virgin and I keep wishing I could become a virgin again.  Can I become a secondary virgin?

    Nkechi, 17

My great and wonderful Nigerian sisters,

I am most delighted to be with you again today and filled with great joy in my heart to know that a good number of you want to remain chaste till you are married no matter what you’ve done in the past. Over time, I’ve gotten many text messages and calls from young girls and ladies who the devil has deceived into losing their salt. However, sometimes I don’t blame them but blame parents, guardians and spiritual leaders who ought to guide their children and sheep aright. However, I want you to know that no matter what you’ve done with yourself in the past, we are like clay in the hands of God and He is ever ready to re-mould us into that which would make us world-famous and heavenly-celebrated. So, get ready for the beginning of the best days of your life as you follow the principles handed down by God. Congratulations in advance!

When I read Ibukun’s text, what came to my mind is the following scripture:

“Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? It is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men.

Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid.”

    Matt.5:13-14

Sweeties, have you forgotten so soon how after you lost your greatest treasure (your virginity) the guys you slept with suddenly broke your heart and spat you out of their mouths like gall? Do you enjoy being passed around while searching for love in the wrong places and having your emotions and body severely abused? God says you are the light of the world, a city which the whole world must acknowledge, respect and salute till eternity. Can you imagine all that accrues to you? Why should you waste it? Hmm…we are going somewhere!

To start with, virginity means a state of being untouched, unexplored or unspoiled. It is your original uncontaminated self which carries your virtues which is the goodness which encompasses your potential, talents and every good quality that can make you productive and stand you out. And your first sexual intercourse has heavy spiritual significance. It could pollute your life and divert the course of your destiny. Every sexual intercourse creates a strong bond between you and everyone you sleep with and they can introduce all sorts into your destiny as well as drain you of virtues God has given you to live a beautiful life. It could make life so difficult for you and may render you very useless. It could lead you to a life of ill-luck, trouble, struggle, failure, non-achievement, late marriage or wrong marriage, poverty, a life of frustration etc. Such a life is open to demonic invasion; polluted, contaminated with every bad thing in the life of the sexual partner. And with every partner, comes a covenant. It doesn’t matter that your aunties or friends have had strings of boyfriends all their lives and they are having a ball. The ugly consequence will always rear its head. Also, we all have different destinies and whether you believe this or not, there are some destinies the devil (who in the first instance is against God’s wish for our life) is poised to destroy completely because he knows they could threaten his kingdom if they are allowed to manifest. Also, there are some girls whose glory, star, shinning and core mission on earth is tied to their virginity. Esther the slave girl would never have become a queen if she had lost her virginity before the contest neither would Mary have had the super privilege to conceive Jesus Christ.

Now, what happens when a girl has been deflowered since high school by someone whose life is bereft of any form of goodness? Hmm….girls….girls…girls, I hope you are following me? There’s so much to your life and your destiny which your parents probably don’t even know. And you have to be extremely careful because life is a mystery and the whole world lies in wickedness. It would only take the grace of God for most women to live a fulfilled life. And in this generation of youth, painfully, the devil seems to be having a field day. Sad! Very sad! I’ll deal with this issue extensively soon.

Now, too many girls have ignorantly gone on a ruinous path and have become so polluted such that their “original” no longer exists and what should make them wonderful wonders have been stolen. But you know what? God wants to showcase the lives of Nigerian girls in the world for many generations to come, make us champions of chastity and is starting with you today! Yes, you can be a secondary virgin and recover your super-duper original. I’ll tell you how next week, God willing. God loves you, so do I!

  • EBELE OKARO: BEING A VIRGIN DOESN’T MAKE YOU BETTER THAN THE NEXT PERSON

EBELE OKARO: BEING A VIRGIN DOESN’T MAKE YOU BETTER THAN THE NEXT PERSON

TELL us about your role in this film.

My name is Ebele Okaro Onyiuke, I’m playing the role of Yetunde, Tobore’s wife. She has health issues. She was a virgin when she met her husband having been married for 40 years, she’s always looking out for him in prayers. They have a cordial relationship.

What is the significance of Yetunde’s virginity in the context of this drama?

First of all, I think it is to show the closeness between the couple. Because he too was a virgin when he met her; he had never slept with someone, so, I guess it makes them very close, as though nothing could come between them, but at the end of the day, something happened. And it also suggests that there are still virgins out there and this thing helps in marriage, but then it’s not the ultimate. Because you could still be a virgin and the end of the day still be a bad person. Being a virgin doesn’t make you better than the next person. That’s basically what I have to say because every person has different perspectives to life; different challenges to life. It all depends on where you’re coming from.

You’ve been on different sets, how would you describe your experience on this one?

The professionalism… Most of the people on this set are professionals. They’ve been in the industry for years. So, we are not just talking about an ordinary production. You just have to up your game to be part of them. No one is perfect, but when you work with professionals,

  • Virgin’s planned sack violates labour laws, says Fagbohungbe

Virgin’s planned sack violates labour laws, says Fagbohungbe

A plan by Virgin Atlantic Airways Limited to sack its Nigerian crew members violates the International Labour Conference Convention 158 and the 1999 Constitution of Nigeria, Chief Felix Fagbohungbe (SAN), has said.

Fagbohungbe, who is the counsel to the workers, said his clients have resolved to challenge that decision in court if the issue is not resolved in seven days.

Virgin Atlantic Airways’ Marketing and Communications Manager, Kudi Scott-Igbene, has been quoted as saying the company’s decision to relieve members of the Lagos crew of their duties is because their cultural expertise is no longer required on the Nigerian route.

“Customer feedback has shown us that this is no longer a requirement on the Lagos route,” she said.

The airline has also stated that its restructuring programme, which seeks to ‘cut down additional layers and complexities to reduce cost’, will affect all of its four international bases with local based crew: Delhi, Hong-Kong, Shanghai and Lagos- being its most profitable routes.

However, in a letter written through their lawyer, Chief Fagbohungbe (SAN), the affected workers alleged that they are treated differently than cabin crew in other Virgin Airways international base stations.

They alleged that out of all who have been rendered redundant, only the Lagos crew members’ termination takes effect on November 30 while others have up till March 31, 2016.

Fagbohungbe said: “Our clients are aware that their counterparts on other routes which may not be as profitable as the Lagos-London route, were given various options to remain in the employment of Virgin Atlantic or given severance packages which are regarded as reasonable.

“Virgin Atlantic did not extend these courtesies to its Nigerian crew.”

He added “There is also no gainsaying that your action is contrary to the relevant provisions of the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Right to the effect that every individual shall be entitled to enjoyment of the rights and freedoms recognised and guaranteed in the charter without distinction of any kind.”

Fagbohungbe charged the Minister of Aviation to urgently look into what he termed an “utter disdain and disregard for the feelings of Nigerians by Virgin Atlantic.”

He added: “We demand that Virgin Atlantic should immediately withdraw the notices of termination served on our clients through its agent – Aviation Logistics and Management Limited.”

Unions flay Virgin over sack of Nigerian crew

ABOUT three weeks after British carrier Virgin Atlantic Airways sacked 20 Nigerian cabin crew members, aviation unions threatened yesterday to stop the airline from operating into the country.

The Air Transport Services Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (ATSSSAN) and the National Union of Air Transport Employees (NUATE) at the weekend called on the Ministry of Aviation to intervene in the matter, describing the action as racist.

The unions said they decided to condemn the action of the airline’s management, which, they said, had no recourse to known international labour or aviation practices and standards.

A statement issued by Saint Omotaje and Olayinka Abioye on behalf of ATSSSAN and NUATE said: “We have studied the situation and have decided to call on the Federal Government, through the Ministry of Transportation and aviation agencies to intervene in this act of racism before it gets out of hand.

“It is now obvious that Virgin Atlantic does not have a workable conditions of service for its employees. Even where it exist, it discriminate against the Black race (Nigerians) aboard their airplane and yet they will not want to leave the Lagos-UK route for those that love us, Nigerians.”

The unions warned that aviation workers would mobilised through their various unions, associations and international affiliates in the coming days to seek the reversal of the action.

“We believe that Virgin Atlantic must respect their Community Social Responsibility (CSR) obligation owed Nigerians. If they cannot use our crew in their airline, then they have no business flying into or from our country where they make a lot of money,” the unions said.

Last week , Nigerian cabin crew members of the Virgin Atlantic Airways called on the Federal Government  to come to their aid over alleged racial bias by the airline.

The cabin crew, through their lawyer, Chief Felix Fagbohungbe, SAN, wrote a letter protesting the planned termination of their jobs by the end of this month.

Reacting to the protest, the airline’s sales agent in Nigeria, Chief John Adebanjo, dismissed insinuations that the airline was planning to pull out of the country due to harsh operating environment.

  • Young entrepreneurs learn from Virgin boss

IT was an experience of a lifetime for two young entrepreneurs Eseoghene Ise Odiete and Nasir Abdulqadir Yammama when they got the privilege of learning from a distinguished business man, Founder and Chairman Virgin Group, Sir Richard Branson.

The duo got the opportunity to be mentored by the business mogul after winning the Enterprise Challenge, a competition organised by the British Council and Virgin Atlantic in Partnership with Zenith Bank.

The online competition for Nigerian entrepreneurs aged 18-35 and living in Nigeria or studying in the United Kingdom (UK) took place in three stages that required contestants to write an essay on their entrepreneurial journeys, created a video pitch for their businesses or business plans, and defend their plans before a panel of experts in Nigeria and the UK.

Eseoghene, who runs Hesey Designs – an online store selling African-inspired accessories, which also helps to empower and mentor other young African women, emerged the winner from Nigeria; while Nasir Abdulqadir Yammama, a Postgraduate student at Middlesex University in London, won with a business plan for a mobile phone app called Verdant to help crop farmers won from the UK.

During the mentoring session between the winners and Sir Branson in London, they learnt about the magnate’s life and business experiences and left there feeling fulfilled.

Eseoghene described the experience as awesome.

“It was an awesome experience meeting and learning from Richard Branson; one that will change my life and business and take it to a whole new level. I am super grateful for the opportunity,” she said.

On his part, Yammama said he had learnt new things from the whole experience. “The Enterprise Challenge has been a remarkable competition which I thoroughly enjoyed. I believe it has not only developed my skills but exposed me to a whole new way of looking at things from writing to pitching and presentation.

Also, the calibre of people I have been able to interact and network with is the absolute thing every aspiring entrepreneur and innovator wishes to associate with. And Meeting Sir Richard Branson was a priceless opportunity that I will continue to value immensely. I have been able to acquire so much wisdom and inspiration that I feel ready and bound to exceed all expectation,” she said.

Sir Branson said Virgin Atlantic is delighted to have supported the Enterprise.

“Innovation has been an important part of Virgin’s heritage and I was pleased to see so many young Nigerians keen to embrace new ideas through the competition. Many congratulations to Ese and Nasir who had fantastic business plans and I’m sure will have very bright futures,” he said.

Over 1000 young Nigerian entrepreneurs entered the competition – which was organised by British Council in partnership with Virgin Atlantic and with financial support from Zenith Bank to help talented young Nigerians develop their entrepreneurial skills.

In addition to their meeting with Richard Branson, the winners each received a £5000 grant, courtesy Zenith Bank to help them develop their businesses, a fully-funded scholarship to attend a five-day entrepreneurship foundation course at the Branson Centre for Entrepreneurship in South Africa, and two return tickets to the UK.

  • I’ve not had sex since I was 17; am I still a virgin?

No. you’re no longer a virgin in the real sense of the word, but you may be described as a second generation virgin. What made you have sex at 11? I want to believe you were raped. Well, many people wish they could return to virginity and are choosing to become second-generation virgins. Second-Generation Virginity is a choice to abstain from sex again for a period of time. For some, that period of time is a few months; for others a few years or until marriage.

You may be thinking you had sex too soon and I think so too. Becoming a second-generation virgin is one way to strongly state to others and to yourself that you have decided to abstain from sex. The origin of the word “virgin” is from the Greek word “Virgo,” often associated with goddesses of power. For some, second-generation virginity is a reclaiming of power and control over one’s body. Reclaiming your sexuality: When someone forces or pressures you to have sex, or makes you feel your virginity was “stolen,” it doesn’t feel like that should be your “first time.” Your first time having sex is special, and no one has the right to take that from you. If being raped or pressured into sex has happened to you, you’re not alone. There is support, and your real “first time” is still to come. Second-generation virginity allows you to reclaim your virginity in such cases.

  • Virgin to pull out of Ghana

The employees of Virgin Atlantic in Ghana will lose their jobs in three months as the airline will shut its offices in Accra after its last flight on September 23.

In a statement last weekend, the airline, which operates direct flights on the Accra-London route, said it was closing shop in Ghana.

It said its decision was due to “exceptionally high fuel costs, a challenging wider economic environment and an inability to operate morning arrivals from Accra due to scarcity of slots at Heathrow.”

When the last flight takes off in September, the airline will close  its offices in Accra and the 16 staff hired through a General Sales Agent will be made redundant, Joanne Foster, Virgin’s Communication Manager in-charge of the UK, India, Middle East and Africa, said.

Asked about the implication of the decision on the employees, she said: “We are discussing the details with the employees and will be offering them a redundancy package as well as provide support to assist in their efforts to seek re-employment.”

Ms. Foster also said the airline might return when the economy improved.

  • My boyfriend releases inside me but am I still a virgin and can I get pregnant?

My boyfriend and I make love but we do it on the surface of my vagina. I have never seen blood flow and when he releases inside, I take drugs to flush it out. Am I still a virgin and can I get pregnant? Mara from Delta.

Dear Mara, are you the one fooling yourself that you’re still a virgin or is it your boyfriend that is deceiving you? You have taken play-play sex beyond the vagina and he comes with full force right inside you and you’re still asking if you’re still a virgin! Haba! You may soon become a virgin in the labour room o, if you don’t see a physician soon for the right contraceptives.

By blood, I’m sure you think that because you haven’t seen any blood stain after sex, then it must mean you’re still intact. Na lie!

Let me explain to you why women may or may not have blood stain after the first sexual intercourse.  The hymen is a piece of tissue that, during development, blocks some or all of the entrance to the vagina. It exists in many species, and scientists have no real understanding of its purpose in humans.

Not every woman has the same type of hymen. In some women, the entrance to the vagina is mostly, or completely, unobstructed; in others, a condition called imperforate hymen can block the entire entrance so that not even menstrual blood can escape. There are, of course, variations in between.

  • Africa is virgin land for investments, says Obi

ANAMBRA State Governor Peter Obi has described Africa as a virgin land for investment in Information Communication Technology (ICT), agriculture and sectors of life. He spoke at the Canadian High Commission in Abuja during a meeting with the visiting Canadian Minister of International Trade, Hon. Ed Fast.

Obi, said the country perception by outsiders was worse than the realities on ground.

He said the country, under the leadership of President Goodluck Jonathan was making significant progress in all areas, adding; “President Jonathan took over the reins of government when things had already gone bad, he is striving to correct the anomalies and I can tell you that he is succeeding. The opposition he has today is the by-product of any reform movement, whereby those that benefited from the past being reformed are fighting back.”

He described Nigeria as a place that ensures return on investment because of its large market. Obi said there were deposits of one natural resource or the other in all the states.

He spoke about his state , explaining to Fast the opportunities there for investment and trade. “The South-East, which Anambra belongs to boasts of the highest concentration of entrepreneurial people in sub-Saharan Africa. Nnewi in Anambra State is the leading industrial town in the country. It is the only place where motor vehicles are manufactured, I mean manufactured, not assembled in the country. The people of the State are ingenious and have the capacity to market products everywhere in the world. Investing among such people is always an instant success as with SABMiller that started operations a few months ago in Anambra State.”

Earlier, Fast said Canada was interested in increasing the volume of trade in Nigeria and investing in ICT, health, education, oil and gas.

The Canadian High Commissioner to Nigeria, Chris Cooter said Obi was invited to the meeting of his commitment to Nigeria and the people of Anambra.

The event was witnessed by the Nigerian Ambassador to Canada, Chief Ojo Maduekwe, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory Senator Bala Mohammed, Hon. Chris Azubogu, the Anambra State Commissioner for Education, Uju Okonkwo, among others.

  • BA, Virgin guilty of unethical conduct – Senate panel

BA, Virgin guilty of unethical conduct – Senate panel

Senate Committee on Aviation on Wednesday said the Bristish Airways (BA) and Virgin Atlantic were guilty of unethical conduct in their operations in Nigeria.
Chairman Senate Committee on Aviation, Senator Hope Uzodinma, stated this while presenting a report on the “Violation of aviation laws and practice by foreign airlines and lapses in the operations of regulatory agencies” to the Senate at plenary in Abuja.
Uzodinma told the Senate that BA and Virgin were not only liable but have shown no remorse for their wrongful treatment of Nigerian passengers.
He urged the Senate to proactively engage the Federal Government in view of its plans to float a new national flag carrier to support Arik Airline to commence international operations to help them offer the needed competition to foreign airlines.
He added that thousands of Nigerians who originated their flight from Nigeria on the two foreign airlines were “cheated through illegitimate fares.”
He said failure to refund fares illegally charged Nigerians is an indication that BA and Virgin have no regard for their teeming customers.
Uzodinma said: “Having reviewed all presentations and made further inquiry, the committee came to the following conclusions: That BA and Virgin, not only are guilty of unethical conduct despicable anywhere, but show no iota of remorse.
“That thousands of Nigerians who originated their flight from Nigeria on BA and Virgin were cheated through illegitimate fares.
“That the two foreign carriers have no regard for their teeming customers, otherwise they would not have considered them unfit for refund which they did not do to the United States and United Kingdom originating passengers.
“This issue is less a matter of law than a matter of corporate Social responsibility. Both BA and Virgin have very poor records in CSR in Nigeria.
“That the Passenger Fuel Surcharge was deceptive both in concept and implementation and is being used to deprive the nation of her statutory revenue running into hundreds of millions of U.S dollars from the non-payment of the five per cent Ticket Sales Charge (TSC).
“It was also confirmed that all foreign airlines are involved in the Passenger Fuel Surcharge scam.
The Aviation Committee further noted that there is no anti- trust, anti-competition and passenger rights laws in the country and that the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) does not have very strong provisions on economic regulation and consumer protection.
