Volkswagen earmarks $11.8b to develop, build China electric cars

Volkswagen Group said on Thursday it plans to spend 10 billion Euros (11.8 billion dollars) by 2025 to develop and manufacture all-electric-and-plug-in hybrid-vehicles as it seeks to comply with upcoming stringent rules in China.

“The group, which includes Volkswagen AG and Audi AG, intends to inaugurate 15 of the so-called new energy vehicles (NEV) models over the next two to three year.

“The firms will inaugurate an additional 25 vehicles after 2025, China Chief Jochem Heizmann told Media on Thursday.

China’s NEV production and sales quotas, which must be met by 2019, had prompted a flurry of electric car deals.

Also it has encouraged new inauguration as automakers in China race to ensure they do not fall short. Automakers that do fall short will be required to buy credits.

Volkswagen presently has around 10 NEVs already in China market, although all are imported models with limited sales volumes, according to a company spokeswoman.

Heizmann, speaking ahead of the Guangzhou auto show, added that the group is aiming to sell 400,000 new energy vehicles per year in China by 2020 and 1.5 million per year by 2025.

NEVs refer to all-electric battery cars and heavily electrified plug-in hybrids.

Heizmann said some of those models will have between 400 and 600km driving range on a single full charge.

By comparison, Tesla’s (TSLA.O) model S has a range of 490km and as much as 632km depending on battery capacity, according to the company.

The Volkswagen Group is also confident that its group companies and their local China joint venture partners will be able to generate enough NEV sales volume to account for NEV quotas by 2019, Heizmann said, adding that there will be no need to buy credits.

“We need high volumes of new energy vehicles, we are working on full speed on that.’’

Last week, General Motors Co’s China chief Matt Tsien told reporters GM’s China joint ventures would be able to generate enough NEV sales volume to account for NEV quotas by 2019.

There will be no need to buy credits.

Tsien said both GM (GM.N) and its China joint-venture partners “are working to at least meet, if not exceed, those credit mandate requirements.”

The Guangzhou auto show starts on Friday.

  • Volkswagen to sell diesel-powered cars

    Volkswagen to sell diesel-powered cars

Volkswagen AG will soon sell diesel-powered cars in the United States after it obtained approval from the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). VW Group of America spokeswoman Jeannine Ginivan said the company updated its vehicles’ emissions software.
The German automaker said it was allowed by the US EPA to sell at least 67,000 diesel vehicles from the 2015 model year. These include about 12,000 vehicles that are currently in dealer inventory with approved emissions modifications. The company is moving towards electric vehicles, signalling a declining role for diesel engines in Volkswagen’s portfolio, particularly in the US.
The software update, which was part of the emissions repair by the EPA and California Air Resources Board, included modifications to diesel engine hardware, but Ginivan said dealers do not need to wait until the repair parts are available early next year. He added that they are currently in the process of finalising the details and would provide more details about its implementation at the right time. However, an independent Swedish test had questioned its diesel emissions fix.
Teknikens Värld, a publication known for its “moose test” dynamic assessment, said it has been clear to them that in several cases, the driveability of the cars has worsened dramatically. The remark came after it tested 10 different vehicles pre and post-fix. Volkswagen’s Swedish arm said it found the result surprising.
Previously, the automaker admitted it rigged almost 500,000 diesel cars in order to pass US emissions tests, a scandal known as Dieselgate. It had allegedly put aside US$24 billion (AU$31 billion) to cover the costs and fines brought by the scandal.
Earlier this year, Toyota Motor Corp surpassed Volkswagen as the number one automaker with Renault-Nissan Alliance on the second rank. Volkswagen ranked third.
Toyota’s worldwide production surged 9.4 percent in January and February of this year. Tokyo-based spokesperson Kayo Doi said the solid production begins in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations markets.
Volkswagen, on other hand, reportedly suffered an almost 10 percent decline in its core market, China, during the first two months of the year.
Forbes notes that sales in the US and Europe, which are comparatively higher, cannot make up for the Chinese contraction. Audi, its profit machine, was down 7.7 percent in the same period.

  • Volkswagen overtakes Toyota

    Volkswagen overtakes Toyota

    •German firm is world’s best-selling car maker

VOLKSWAGEN has overtaken Toyota to become the world’s best-selling carmaker, the first time the German company has held the position.
Japan’s Toyota, which had topped sales for the past four years, sold 10.175 million vehicles globally in 2016. That fell short of the 10.31 million sales which VW reported last week.
The milestone comes despite VW’s scandal over emission tests cheating, which sparked a global backlash and multiple lawsuits. A statenent from Volkswagen said: “2016 was a very challenging year for us.”
The company “made strides in resolving and overcoming the diesel crisis” and initiated fundamental change in the company’s long-term strategy, he said. “Nonetheless, we managed to stabilise operating business in difficult conditions: the fact that we handed over more than 10 million vehicles to customers last year bolsters the group and its brands as we head for the future,” he added.
Volkswagen, which makes the Audi, Porsche and Skoda brands, saw a 3.8 per cent increase in sales buoyed by demand in China. And it has been making inroads in other markets too. In Sweden for example, the Volkswagen Golf was the most popular new car in 2016.
Toyota’s sales grew by 0.2 per cent – though it appears to have suffered from a slowdown in the United States car industry. General Motors reports its figures next week, but it is expected to lag both the Japanese and the German firms.

  • Volkswagen delivers 511,000 vehicles in ten months

The Volkswagen passenger cars brand has delivered 511,500 vehicles worldwide in October, 4.4 percent more than the previous year.

A total of 4,886,400 vehicles were handed over to customers from January to October. As a result, cumulative deliveries by the Volkswagen brand again exceeded the previous year’s level.

Jürgen Stackmann, Volkswagen Brand Board Member for Sales, saidd: “The positive overall trend for the Volkswagen brand has stabilised compared with 2015. 53,000 units of the old and new Tiguan models were delivered in October, more than 25 percent up on the previous year. There has been a fantastic response to the new Tiguan. And Touran deliveries were up more than 50 percent compared with the previous year, with 12,800 units of the old and new models handed over to customers in October. The trend is therefore clearly headed in the right direction, but we still continue to work on the challenges facing the brand in some regions. That includes systematically strengthening the brand in Europe, North America and South America.”

Volkswagen brand deliveries in the overall European market decreased by 7.0 percent in October compared with the previous year to 132,400 vehicles. The majority of these models – 112,500 units – were delivered in Western. 43,000 vehicles were handed over to customers in the home market of Germany, a decline of 21.1 percent. This is attributable to a systemic decline mainly as a result of an extension in the contract term for employee leasing. Volkswagen continued its successful path in Central and Eastern Europe, where deliveries rose by 3.0 percent to 19,800 vehicles.

  • Unveiling repackaged Volkswagen Jetta

    Unveiling repackaged Volkswagen Jetta

With the old 2.0-litre base engine replaced by the more powerful and efficient 1.4-litre turbo, the Jetta has the most appealing power train line-up in the segment. Its specs on paper are competitive, writes TAJUDEEN ADEBANJO, with agency reports.

The Jetta’s slow and inefficient base engine has finally been shown the door, replaced by a modern, small turbocharged four-cylinder in the S and SE trim levels. Every Jetta also gets a new touch screen interface, while advanced accident avoidance tech is added to the options list. Finally, the diesel-powered Jetta TDI will be unavailable for much or all of 2016 as Volkswagen corrects the car’s non-compliant emissions system.

Volkswagen is still trying to figure out what to do with the diesel-powered engine in the 2016 Jetta TDI model after it was discovered the company has been cheating in emissions testing.

The new turbocharged 1.4-litre engine replaces last year’s wheezy 2.0-litre four-cylinder base engine. Really, from the new 1.4 all the way up to the GLI’s turbo 2.0-litre and the nifty gas-electric alchemy of the Hybrid, the Jetta’s engine lineup is uniquely sophisticated and compelling in this generally value-oriented segment.

For 2016, all of the VW Jetta’s available engines are turbocharged to provide excellent power and fuel economy.

Alas, the rest of the Jetta isn’t quite as great. In the past, the Jetta provided better refinement than the Civics and Corollas. Its interior was of a higher quality and the driver experience was closer to a German sport sedan than a typical “economy” car. The current Jetta represents a shift toward more of a Costco philosophy of getting the biggest product for the least amount of money. Indeed, the Jetta has more cabin and trunk space than its competitors, but it doesn’t feel quite as special as it used to. There’s a whiff of cost-cutting here that was absent from previous models, and that makes the car harder to recommend.

On the bright side, this year’s Jetta boasts an up-to-date tech interface with Smartphone integration. But given how competitive some other compact sedans have become, it’s hard to overlook the Jetta’s lacklustre handling and bland interior design. Top-rated competitors like the Ford Focus, Honda Civic and Mazda 3 have aped the old Jetta playbook while in some cases providing more features for the money.

    Body styles

The 2016 Volkswagen Jetta is available in a variety of trim levels and engine choices: 1.4T S, 1.4T SE, 1.8T Sport and 1.8T SEL. There are also GLI and Hybrid trims available.

Standard equipment on the Jetta S includes 15-inch steel wheels, air-conditioning, full power accessories, keyless entry, heated mirrors, cruise control, a height-adjustable driver seat, a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, 60/40-split rear seats, cloth upholstery, Bluetooth phone and audio connectivity, and a four-speaker sound system with a 5-inch touch screen interface, a CD player and an auxiliary audio jack. The S Technology package adds a rear-view camera, a 6.3-inch touchscreen, a USB port, a media player interface, satellite radio and VW Car-Net smartphone integration, which includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration.

The Jetta SE includes all of the above plus 16-inch alloy wheels, push-button start, heated windshield washer nozzles, heated front seats and a front centre armrest. The SE Connectivity package adds a sunroof, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, driver lumbar adjustment, “V-Tex” premium vinyl upholstery, a rear centre armrest and a six-speaker sound system with an enhanced Car-Net system.

Aside from the sunroof, 1.8T Sport gets all of the above plus a more powerful engine, a sport-tuned suspension, 17-inch wheels and fog lights.

The 1.8T SEL reverts to standard suspension tuning, but adds different 17-inch wheels, the sunroof, keyless ignition and entry, automatic headlights and wipers, higher-quality interior materials, and front reading lights and vanity mirror lights. The SEL Premium package adds a six-way power driver seat, dual-zone automatic climate control, a cooled glove compartment and an eight-speaker Fender audio system.

The Lighting package available on Sport and SEL trims adds adaptive bi-xenon headlights, LED running lights and ambient interior lighting. The Driver Assistance package optional on the SEL trims adds adaptive cruise control, frontal collision warning and automatic emergency braking, a blind-sport warning system and rear cross-traffic alert.

The Jetta GLI is available in SE and SEL trim levels. They essentially line up with the regular Jetta versions, but both have a sport-tuned suspension, upgraded brakes, special styling elements, sport seats, the Connectivity package elements, front and rear parking sensors, automatic headlights and wipers, keyless ignition and entry, and the Fender sound system. The SEL differs with 18-inch wheels, a blind-spot and rear cross-traffic alert system, LED running lights, adaptive bi-xenon headlights and a navigation system.

The Hybrid is available only as the SEL Premium. It has the same extras as the GLI SEL, plus extra hybrid-specific styling elements and trip computer readouts. It reverts to the six-speaker sound system.

    Powertrains

Every Jetta is front-wheel drive. The 2016 Volkswagen Jetta 1.4T has a turbocharged 1.4-liter four-cylinder good for 150 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque. A five-speed manual transmission with hill hold assist is standard; a six-speed automatic is optional.

The Jetta 1.8T models have a turbocharged 1.8-liter four-cylinder that produces 170 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque. A five-speed manual is standard on the Sport, while a six-speed automatic is optional on the Sport and standard on the SEL. In Edmunds performance testing, a Jetta 1.8T with the automatic went from zero to 60 mph in 7.4 seconds, which makes it the quickest compact sedan we’ve tested at the time of this writing. EPA-estimated fuel economy is 29 mpg combined (25/36) with the automatic. The manual gets 1 mpg highway better.

The Jetta GLI has a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder that produces 210 hp and 207 lb-ft of torque. A six-speed manual transmission is standard; a six-speed automated manual (DSG) is optional. Expect a 0-60 time in the mid-to-upper 6-second range.

The Jetta Hybrid is powered by a 1.4-liter turbocharged engine that works in tandem with an electric motor and a seven-speed automated manual. Total output is 170 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque. In Edmunds testing, the Jetta Hybrid ran from zero to 60 mph in a swift 7.8 seconds, making it one of the quickest non-luxury hybrids. EPA-estimated fuel economy is 44 mpg combined (42/48). During an extensive Edmunds fuel economy test consisting of city, highway and interstate driving, the Jetta Hybrid averaged 43.0 mpg overall.

    Safety

Every 2016 Volkswagen Jetta comes standard with traction and stability control, antilock disc brakes, front side airbags, side curtain airbags and active front head restraints. All but the base S without the Technology package comes with a rearview camera. The 1.8T and TDI SEL trims are available with the Driver Assistance package that adds a frontal collision warning and automatic emergency braking, a blind-sport monitoring system and rear cross-traffic alert.

VW’s Car-Net telematics system, standard from SE with Connectivity on up, includes automatic crash notification, roadside assistance, remote vehicle access, stolen vehicle location and geo-fencing (which allows parents to set boundaries for teenage drivers). A Car-Net smartphone app lets owners control many of these functions on the go.

In government crash tests, the Jetta received five out of five stars for overall safety, with four stars for total front impact protection and five stars for total side impact protection. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gave the Jetta the highest possible crash rating of “Good” in its moderate-overlap and small-overlap frontal-offset impact tests, as well as a “Good” score in the side-impact, roof strength and seat/head restraint (whiplash protection) tests.

    Interior design and special features

Almost every compact sedan today features an eye-catching interior design with edgy shapes and a focus on the latest technology. The key word there is “almost.” The Jetta’s cabin, by contrast, is resolutely conservative in appearance, with materials ranging from glaringly spartan in lower trims (the dash and doors are covered with hard, shiny plastic, for instance) to merely adequate in upper trims (the dash adopts a soft-touch, low sheen material, but the door panels remain unyielding). Volkswagen’s Golf hatchback has a much more attractive, higher-quality cabin, as do the rival 2016 Honda Civic and Mazda 3.

For 2016, the Jetta gets a welcome injection of technology. Volkswagen’s latest touchscreen interface is standard on every trim level, available in two sizes and offering VW Car-Net as well as Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone app integration. Unchanged, thankfully, is the Jetta’s remarkable spaciousness by segment standards. The backseat dwarfs that of just about every other compact sedan and hatchback (including the Golf), and the remarkable 15.7-cubic-foot trunk is on par with bigger midsize sedans.

  • Volkswagen reaches agreement on U.S emission scandal

Volkswagen will offer “substantial compensation” and car buy-back deals in the United States as part of a settlement of the diesel emissions scandal.

Final details of the packages offered will be announced in June, but a court had given Volkswagen and regulators until Thursday to reach a deal in principle, the BBC reports.

Last year, US regulators discovered that Volkswagen cars were fitted with software that could distort emissions tests.

The German giant subsequently said 11 million cars worldwide were affected.

Details of the preliminary agreement were announced in a California court.

U.S district court Judge, Charles Breyer, said the settlement would include a buyback offer for nearly 500,000 2.0-litre vehicles.

He did not give details of how much car owners would be offered in compensation, but said the deal between Volkswagen, the U.S government and private lawyers would be “substantial.”

Judge Breyer said Volkswagen would also pay into an environmental fund and commit other money to promote green car technology.

  • Volkswagen recalls 91,000 Passat sedans

Volkswagen is recalling 91,000 Passat sedans in the United States to fix insufficient cable insulation that could cause short circuits, it has said.

The cars were assembled between 2012 and 2014, VW said. Vehicles in other markets were not affected by the fault, a spokesman said.

The embattled German carmaker, which has for months been working on a fix for the nearly 600,000 diesel vehicles on U.S. roads caught up in the company’s massive emissions cheating scandal, has had a string of recalls lately due to various technical glitches.

Last week, VW recalled nearly 5,600 electric e-Golf cars in the United States to address a battery problem that can cause stalling.

Last week, VW recalled 177,000 Passat sedans across the world due to a potential electrical fault, and also recalled more than 800,000 VW Touareg and Porsche Cayenne sports utility vehicles to fix a pedal mechanism.

  • Volkswagen ordered to compensate UK customers

Volkswagen ordered to compensate UK customers

Volkswagen’s efforts to regain the public’s trust in the wake of the emissions scandal have incurred further costs after the company was ordered to compensate its British customers.

The Department for Transport called out the German car manufacturer over a “discrepancy in compensation” between its United Kingdom (UK) and United States (US) customers. Volkswagen car owners in the US who were affected by the fraud emission claims received $1,000 worth of gift vouchers to “encourage loyalty” however their UK counterparts have so far received nothing.

Volkswagen claimed that the reason for this was due to the fact that US motorists were in a “very different position” to those in Europe because engine configurations were not the same.

Ministers have been unwilling to accept the response and are now pressing the company to act.

UK Roads minister, Andrew Jones, said the government “expects Volkswagen to treat its UK customers fairly” and was “pressing” the manufacturer to address the issue’’.Jones’ comments follow on from reports that the timetable for fixing cars in Britain and the rest of the EU is already starting to slip. The company had previously stated that it hoped to begin recalling affected cars in January or February of this year however it has yet to begin the process.

Volkswagen said that it had not received approval from the authority for the recall but hoped that it would do so this week.

  • Volkswagen unveils new SUV to win back buyers

Volkswagen will unveil a battery-powered Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) at the Detroit auto show on January 11, according to company sources, part of a push into electric vehicles as it seeks to win back buyers in United States following its emissions test cheating scandal.

The car will be a plug-in hybrid version of the Tiguan, the German automaker’s top-selling sport-utility vehicle (SUV), the two sources said last Friday.

Analysts say Volkswagen’s core VW brand badly needs new models in the world’s second largest auto market to reverse a three-year decline in sales which fell 4.8 per cent in 2015 to 349,440 cars.

Europe’s biggest automaker is putting increasing emphasis on electric cars following its cheating of diesel emissions tests, which analysts think could hit demand for diesel vehicles, and a focus on SUVs makes sense given their growing popularity.

The sources said the concept model, following VW’s unveiling of an electric microbus at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas last week, would hit U.S. dealerships sometime after the planned release next year of a new midsize crossover vehicle and a long-wheelbase Tiguan.

However, the German group is struggling to balance model development with the growing costs of its emissions scandal, a task made more difficult this week by a US lawsuit seeking billions of dollars in fines.

The new Tiguan prototype integrates electric engines at the front and rear axles and boasts more off-road quality than the GTE concept version of VW’s fifth best-selling model launched at the Frankfurt auto show last September, the sources said.

Still, demand for hybrid and electric cars has been dampened by cheap gasoline as well as limited range and high prices.

US sales of hybrid and all electric vehicles plunged 16 per cent in the first 11 months of 2015 compared with the year before to 452,338 cars, the Electric Drive Transportation Association said.

However, regulators are requiring automakers to sell more electric cars to curb greenhouse emissions and VW is keen to redouble efforts in the wake of its emissions scandal.

“Perhaps VW was so successful building cars in a conventional way that the necessity to fully engage with several new aspects of mobility has not been recognised,” chief executive Matthias Mueller said last Wednesday. “That is now different.”

VW plans to expand its MQB modular platform – the base for most of the group’s small and medium front-wheel-drive models – to build long-range plug-in hybrids and electric cars.

It also aims to develop a new modular platform dubbed MEB for compact electric cars and light commercial vehicles and launch 20 battery-powered or plug-in hybrid vehicles by 2020.
