  • Volkswagen recalls 461,300 cars in U.S., Canada

Volkswagen is recalling about 461,300 cars in the United States and Canada to fix a fault that could prevent air bags from deploying.

The world’s biggest carmaker said on Friday that the recall included VW Golf, Passat, Jetta, and Tiguan models assembled between 2010 and 2014.

No accidents or injuries related to the problem have been reported, VW said.

The recall comes as the German group struggles to overcome underperformance in the United States, where the sale of VW-branded cars plunged 10 percent to 367,000 last year, less than half its ambitious target of 800,000 by 2018.

VW said there will be 420,000 models recalled in the U.S. market and another 41,300 in Canada. VW is examining whether such issues affect cars delivered to other markets, a VW spokesman said.

The spokesman said that debris could, under certain circumstances, interfere with the clock spring that keeps the vehicles’ air bags powered, but added that no such incident has been reported.

  • Volkswagen targets cost-saving strategies

Volkswagen  said it has adopted some cost-saving targets. It’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Martin Winterkorn, said in an interview on German TV Channel ZDF that the company was on track with efficient programmes to achieve the targets.

He said he hoped the programmes would help the company to narrow the profit gap with international rivals.

It would be recalled that the Europe’s largest carmaker sold a record 10.1 million vehicles across the multi-brand group last year.

But the company is seeking to cut costs at its core division by five billion euros ($5.66 billion) over the next two years.

    Volkswagen delivers over 10m vehicles

The Volkswagen Group achieved the first goal of its Strategy 2018 last year – the group delivered over 10 million vehicles to customers.

According to the Chairman of the Board of Management of Volkswagen Aktiengesellschaft, Prof Martin Winterkorn, 10.14 million vehicles were handed over to customers worldwide from January to December 2014.

“That is impressive; we are vigorously implementing our Strategy 2018 despite challenging market conditions. We are also making good progress with our other main goals – return on sales, customer satisfaction and top employer,” Winterkorn said.

Developments in the month of December were also positive, with deliveries running at 881,000 units against 857,600 in December 2013.

Group Board member for Sales Christian Klingler said the group has doubled vehicle deliveries in the last 10 years.

Klingler described it as outstanding performance and an impressive result, stating that all group brands have played their part in achieving the results despite difficult market conditions.

The Volkswagen passenger cars brand delivered 6.12 million vehicles to customers worldwide from January to December 2014. This means the brand has doubled deliveries since 2004, and topped the six-million mark for the first time.

Stallion Groups brings Volkswagen back to Nigeria

Global automobile manufacturer, Volkswagen Group, and regional conglomerate, Stallion Group, have inked a deal to establish a vehicle assembly plant in Nigeria.

The agreement marked the historic return of the German car maker after more than 20 years of their departure, following the collapse of their joint venture with the Federal Government.

The collapse led to the closure of Volkswagen manufacturing facility in Lagos and the subsequent sale of government shares to the Stallion Group.

In line with the new Auto Policy announced by the Federal Government in October 2013, the collaboration between the Volkswagen Group and Stallion will result in local assembly of Volkswagen brands in Nigeria.

The Volkswagen Group with its headquarters in Wolfsburg, Germany is one of the world’s leading automobile manufacturers and the largest carmaker in Europe.

It operates 107 production plants in 19 European countries and an additional eight countries in the Americas, Asia and Africa.  The Volkswagen Group sells its vehicles in 153 countries.

Stallion Group is already the exclusive distributor for several brands of the Volkswagen Group, including Volkswagen, Audi, Skoda, and Porsche.

It is a multinational conglomerate with a 45-year history operating in Nigeria and in 18 countries and is engaged in diversified industries.

Stallion’s Chairman Sunil Vaswani, who spoke on the development, said: “This is a proud moment for Stallion in partnering with a world-leading global brand like Volkswagen.

“Stallion is fully committed to achieving its objectives in establishing assembly operations in Nigeria, and expanding into other aspects of the automotive industry value chain”.

Vaswani reaffirmed his commitment to working with the Federal Government to create jobs and attract more foreign investments to grow the economy.

The Executive Director of Sales, CIS, Middle East and Africa at Volkswagen, Dr. Jan Utermarck, said: “Volkswagen is on a constant global search for market and sales potential.  Nigeria is the largest automotive market in the Sub-Saharan region; hence, we appreciate the fact that we have found a professional partner in Stallion to launch a local vehicle assembly in Lagos starting in 2015.”

Stallion will assemble the Jetta, Volkswagen CC, and Amarok models during the initial phase, followed by the Passat, Tiguan and other models in subsequent phases.

  • Volkswagen enhances Passat

    Volkswagen enhances Passat

Volkswagen has reached a new realm in fuel efficiency, revealing a concept version of its midsize Passat sedan capable of making 42 mpg (67.59km) – the high mark for a car that size running a non-hybrid gasoline engine.

The drive for inexpensive ways to boost the fuel economy of gasoline cars has led automakers to some strange places – from car shutters to transmissions and shrinking of engines and adding of turbos to regain lost power while a few automakers have experimented with tiny three-cylinder engines.

Cylinder deactivation — using electronics to shut off fuel and close the valves to a few cylinders, turning them into air springs — has been around for years in V-8s. Honda for instance uses cylinder deactivation in versions of the V-6 Accord sedan, boosting its efficiency to 34mpg (54.7km).

Experts, however, said cutting off half of an inline four-cylinder could pose some technical challenges.

In a V-engine, it is easier to balance the loads; here, VW shuts off the inside two pistons. The 1.4-litre engine also uses turbocharging, direct injection and a stop-start system to further save fuel. While VW calls it a concept, it is likely to see production as fuel economy standards rise.

  • Volkswagen unveils VW CC, others

    Volkswagen unveils VW CC, others

The Volkswagen Centre in Victoria Island, Lagos has unveiled three new cars – VW CC, Jetta and Polo in a renewed bid to raise the profile of the Volkswagen brand in Nigeria, writes TAJUDEEN ADEBANJO

The Volkswagen CC has been largely unchanged since its emergence as a 2009 model. But for this year, it has adopted new style that brings it in line with its more modern upscale siblings.

Still a replica of the original concept of ‘four-door coupe,’ the Volkswagen CC combines the dramatic styling of a coupe with the practicality of a sedan.

Like the Mercedes Benz CLS that sparked the emerging segment, the CC sits five, providing easier access to the rear seats than a normal coupe.

For the latest model year, Volkswagen updated the CC with more standard equipment as well as revised exterior styling.

Although the CC shares basic features with outgoing version of the Passat sedan, the latest version has been enlarged, de-contented with dreadful luxury to appeal to young and upwardly mobile executives.

The car was unveiled to reporters in Lagos.

The CC’s connection to the old Passat is most visible in its sophisticated cabin, soft-touch materials, fit and finish excellence and overall intuitive design with flowing and polished exterior.

Volkswagen Centre Lagos head of sales and marketing Manish Daryanani, boasted that the CC’s exterior will win over most buyers, adding that the overall look is one of simple elegance, with details like a relatively low, sloping roofline and sleek lights contributing to the attractive, expensive-seeming mien.

He added that styling changes for the latest model year include a simpler, more conservative grille and headlamp design that brings the look more in line with Volkswagen’s mainstream Passat and Jetta offerings.

“The front and rear fascias were also worked over, while Bi-Xenon headlights with VW’s Adaptive Front Lighting System and LED tail lamps are now standard equipment,” he said.

However, the standard engine for the CC is smooth and torquey 1.8 litre Turbo FSI four cylinder engine that delivers 160bhp at 5100 rpm and 207 pound-feet of torque starting from 1800 rpm.

Also available with standard six-speed manual or an optional dual-clutch automatic that VW dubs the DSG is the motor that helps the CC hit 120kmph from a stop in a touch over seven seconds.

Experts rate fuel economy in the new CC at 21/32 mpg while the manual and automatic-equipped cars carry a 22/31 mpg rating.

The CC can also be found in other trim levels: 2.0T Sport, 2.0T Sport Plus, 2.0T R-Line, Lux, Lux VR6 and VR6 4Motion Executive.

The entry-level Sport trim comes well equipped with leatherette convincing (faux leather) upholstery, heated and power-adjustable front seats, a touchscreen-activated eight-speaker sound system with an iPod input jack.

Other features are cruise control, power-adjustable driver’s seat, metallic-look matte chrome interior trim, 17-inch “Verme” alloy wheels, Bluetooth connectivity, a leather-wrapped shift knob and steering wheel and automatic lights and windshield wipers. This trim comes equipped with the 2.0-liter turbo four along with a choice of transmissions – all other trims (except the 2.0T R-Line) come with the automatic gearbox only.

The CC 1.8-litre Turbo FSI four cylinder engines adds 18-inch “Mallory” wheels with all-season 235/40 tyres and a navigation system.

The top-end CC is the VR6 4Motion Executive, which adds the V6 engine and all-wheel drive, a Park Distance Control system with front and rear proximity sensors, a 600-watt Dynaudio premium audio system and leather seating.

All CC models come equipped with a bevy of safety features including dual front, side and side curtain airbags in addition to traction and stability control systems.
