What Aituaje Iruobe, stage name Waje, is a Nigerian superstar is not in doubt. However, the diva has crossed over to the world stage; not with her music, but with her humanitarian efforts via the One Campaign; a non-profit organisation with a mandate to fight world poverty.

In her submission about the effect of the work of Femi Kuti on younger musicians, Waje said, “It is so amazing to be part of this entertainment industry where you are not afraid to say the things you need you to say, so that when we open our mouths, we know we have someone pushing us from behind. We may never meet you, (some of us have never met you, some have, some have never even sat down to have conversations with you). But we know that there is a path we should follow because you want your community, and the people that associate with you to understand the concept of living, and making sure that your community gets the best.”

Waje was part of the One team at the meet and greet session between Irish born Rock superstar; Bono, and Afrobeat star, Femi Kuti that held last Thursday at the new Afrika shrine. Bono, who is a Knight of the British Empire (OBE), was on a brief visit to Nigeria in association with his work with One; an organisation he cofounded.

Waje says that her involvement with the campaign stems from her belief in women’s empowerment, and girl child education, as a way of eradicating poverty. “In Africa, there is a saying that ‘when you educate a boy you educate an individual, but when you educate a girl, you educate generations,” she said.

A face of the Strong Girls Campaign, which is part of the One Campaign in Nigeria, she is involved in an ongoing campaign in Nigeria tagged “Poverty is Sexist”. It urges world leaders to take speedy action against denying girls education, being forced into marriage; avoid mothers risking their lives when they give birth; and to stop the farmer from being prevented from owning the land she works in.

Omotola, others unite to fight poverty

An outstanding line-up of top women musicians from across Africa including Waje, Omotola and YemiAlade have joined forces with ONE to create a brand new song called Strong Girl, a rally cry to empower girls and women everywhere.

Nine artists from seven African countries came together in South Africa earlier this month to write and record the track. They were joined by Nollywood superstar actress and activist OmotolaJaladeEkeinde, who stars in the Strong Girl video. The women are calling for action because poverty is sexist, and we won’t end it unless world leaders act now to help girls and women reach their full potential. The track and video was released on May 13, 2015 along with a global day of action amplifying the songs message and recruiting thousands worldwide to the fight for justice.

This year, new global goals to end poverty will be set by world leaders. To be truly transformative, the goals must focus on the countries and the people that are worst off, and that includes girls and women. Evidence shows that investing in girls and women helps their families, communities and whole economies too.

Talented Nigerian singer, Waje has said the campaign means a lot to her. “This is one of the most profound things I have done in my life. I am doing this for the African woman so she doesn’t have to die in childbirth. I am doing this so that girls in rural Africa can complete primary school education. I am doing this because it is the right and smart thing to do. Empowering girls and women is an idea whose time has come”.

Also speaking as regards the campaign, top Nollywood actress, OmotolaJalade said “I am fortunate to be a young woman living her dreams and a trailblazer of my generation but I also recognize that many women and girls are not so fortunate. Women and girls are disproportionately affected by the injustice of poverty and inequality. But when we invest in women and girls, we increase and accelerate the chances of overcoming extreme poverty”.

On International Women’s Day, ONE published a policy report that revealed the scale of the gender gap in the world’s poorest countries, and how unlocking the potential of girls and women could transform lives. ONE’s call to action is already backed by more 36 of the world’s most powerful women, including Beyoncé, Meryl Streep, Lady Gaga, Angelique Kidjo and other leading women from the worlds of business, arts, politics and activism. They have written an open letter to Germany’s Chancellor Angela Merkel and African Union Commission Chair NkosazanaDlamini-Zuma, who both host crucial summits in the coming months that should set us on a path to agreeing Global Goals that put women’s empowerment at their heart.

    Waje’s recipe for success

NIGERIAN singing sensation, Aituaje Iruobe, aka Waje, may have had her own share of ups and downs, but has remained steadfast in her pursuit for greatness. Apparently, she doesn’t buy into the mantra touted by present day artistes in their lyrics which includes ‘Hustle. Struggle. Busy. Running around. I Wan Blo.’

To experience the Abundant Life in the promise of Flourish, she says, it’s a different strategy. “It’s a strategy of position because when you are positioned where God wants you to be, God does the hustle and bustle for you. And boy, He is good at it,” Waje exhorts.

She anchor’s her thoughts on the scriptural passage, Psalm 92:12, which she says paints the vivid picture of lush Palms and Cedar Oaks.

“You don’t see these trees striving and bustling and networking to flourish. No. Rather, they are where they should be; by the rivers of flowing water. And that’s all that matters! ‘It’s not by power or by might but by my Spirit’ says the Lord. If you are plagued today by busy-ness, slow down! Breath deeper, speak slower, be kinder, gentler, less anxious, more forgiving. Occupy your mind with position questions. It’s time to realign your position and standing with God,” the songstress adds
