•Beat Bayelsa United 2-1 in Benin

Warri Wolves brightened their chances of winning their first league title after they beat Bayelsa United away from home 2-1 in a Glo Premier League Week 32 tie played at Benin yesterday.

Freedom Omofoman’s  fifth minute effort put Warri Wolves at the driver’s seat before Oghenekaro Etebo increased the scoreline in the 22nd minute but was later sent off for unsporting behaviour in the second half.

Etebo’s offence was his reaction to the referee’s call to award  Bayelsa United another spot kick after the initial effort was saved by the Seasiders’ goalkeeper, Okeimute Odah.

The Restoration Boys’ Olufemi Oladapo didn’t miss from 12 yards like his colleague, Peter Ebimobowei. He scored in the  54th minute and the game ended that way.

Wolves retained their second spot on the log with 52 points from 32 games while Bayelsa United are now courting relegation with 39 points from as many matches.

Warri Wolves players and officials have dedicated their Glo Premier League Week 31 2-0 home win over Akwa United to their head coach, Paul Aigbogun who was a year older yesterday.

The Seasiders thrashed their perennial rivals 2-0 with goals from Omofomma Freedom and Joseph Osadaiye and the result lifted Wolves to second on the log of the Glo Premier League with 49 points from 31 matches.

Warri Wolves’ Media Officer, Moses Etu told SportingLife that the club deemed it necessary to dedicate the home victory to their gaffer because of his brilliant work for the club since he began his secondment at the beginning of the season.

LMC clears Rangers, Enyimba, five others

The League Management Company (LMC) has announced that Enugu Rangers, Enyimba and five other clubs have been cleared after fulfilling all financial obligations to their players.

According to information gathered, the latest clubs to be cleared are – Heartland, Sunshine Stars, Enyimba International, Warri Wolves, El-Kanemi Warriors, Rangers International and Lobi Stars.

They joined Kano Pillars, Abia Warriors and Bayelsa United who were the first to be cleared by the league’s governing body earlier in the week, kickOffNigeria.com reports.

All 20 clubs in the Glo Premier League had at the start of the season received N10 million each from the LMC as the first installment of the “Basic Award,” and the LMC had said they could receive more in the course of the season if they are found to have complied with requirements.

To this effect, only debt-free clubs as well as those who have complied with the N150, 000 monthly minimum wage will benefit from the Basic Award. Indebted clubs will also be prevented from operating in the mid-season transfer market.

“We have created these procedures to protect players from the previous tales of unpaid salary arrears and will be working with the clubs to ensure overall improvement of players’ welfare,” chief operating officer of the LMC, Salihu Abubakar, disclosed.

He, however, revealed that Gombe United, Sharks and Giwa FC were refused clearances after documents they submitted indicated that they pay players below the minimum wage.

Wolves battle Sharks with depleted side

Warri Wolves are going  to be without the services of key four players when they take on table toppers Sharks of Porthacourt in Warri.

Ikechukwu Ibenegbu popularly called “Mosquito” will miss the vital clash after picking up an ankle compliant on his return from a two-month injury lay-off against Crown on Sunday.

Also Goalkeeper, Daniel Akpeyi, and central defender Azubuike Egwuekwe will be absent from the Sharks game as they are expected to fly out with the Super Eagles technical crew to London for the friendly game against Scotland.

Another sure absentee will be Azubuike Egwuekwe’s defensive partner Ikechukwu Thankgod who is out due to the suspension.

Sharks will be hoping to capitalise on the above mention absentees in goal, defence and midfield to consolidate their grip on the top spot in the league.

Today’s game against Warri Wolves will go a long way in determining if Sharks Fc who have topped the league for eight weeks now are genuine title contender or pretenders.

Warri Wolves on their part will be hoping star striker Gbolahan Salami continues in his good form as he faces his former manager at Sunshine Stars Gbenga Ogunbote after their infamous fight that lead to his leaving Sunshine Stars four season’s ago.

  • Day I was summoned to Aso Rock

Day I was summoned to Aso Rock

In this concluding part of our interview with incumbent Warri Wolves CEO and former Chairman of the Nigerian Premier League (NPL), Davidson Owumi, he opens up fully on the faces and forces behind his short reign as chairman of the NPL four years ago. He speaks with Taiwo Alimi on how he ditched professional football in Spain for a local side, Enugu Rangers. It is as usual, revealing and interesting. Excerpts….

    Love for local clubs

I love Nigerian clubs and I get very angry when I see our people wearing shirts of all these foreign clubs. I believe that charity should begin from home. Those guys develop their brands to what you see today and I think that Nigerians should first of all embrace their local clubs. I have Rangers as my local team and now that I am managing Warri Wolves I have to shift allegiance to Warri wolves, but even at that, I still have passion for Rangers. It is like Warri Wolves is my home team and out of me there is another local club, Rangers, to support. So, before I waste my emotion on these two teams and now think about another in a far away country, my passion for football would have been long exhausted. But give and take, whenever Manchester United are playing I love to watch them, in spite of their current fumbling, I still love them as a fan. That is the point of being a fan; in whatever situation you stick with them.

    Rayo Vallecano to Rangers

Talking about my stints abroad, I would start with Greece. I played in Greece and the thing about football is that if you are unfortunate to fall into the hands of the wrong manager, it is a problem. When I moved to Spain to play for Rayo Vallecano from Greece under the same manager, I was presented with a contract of 75 percent to 25 percent. That is 25 for me and 75 for my manager, all in the name of playing professional football abroad. Maybe because I was educated, I refused to be frustrated under the slavish contract. After six months, I could not stomach it again and I told my manager that I couldn’t do it again and that I was returning to my country. This is slavish. But some Nigerians in the name of playing professional football abroad would stay there and waste their prime time away. That contract alone would not make me play well. So I came back to Nigeria and signed for Rangers. And when I got back home, that bold step paid off because Rangers was the beginning of my success story in football.

    Stephen Keshi

In all honesty, I would say kudos to Keshi for having the wellness of mind to approach this issue of home and foreign-based players. Coincidentally, l was in camp with Keshi prior to the 1994 World Cup. (Clemens) Westerhof and Bonfrere (Johannes) were in charge of the team and Keshi saw that some of us in the local league were integrated into the team. Although we were not given the same opportunity, the mere fact that you were in the team gave you that mind of belonging. The likes of Dan Amokachi, Finidi George, Uche Okechukwu and I all came from the local league then. And that was the philosophy of Westerhof and it succeeded. So it would have been foolhardy on the part of Keshi to tread another path.

The only other area I want him to modify his style is to further comb the grassroots. Westerhof at that time was coming to league matches. He did not have to send his assistants. Keshi and the other team handlers can spread themselves to local venues. It is not only stars you need to see but potential stars. You can watch grassroots teams, even at the state divisions and spot a talent. If you don’t go and watch them and depend on calls from your scouts and coaches, then you will be depriving hundreds of potential players for the Super Eagles. The NFF (Nigeria Football Federation) should so empower him, because he won’t use his own money so that week in week out he can go to league venues. If Enyimba is playing Rangers today, the national team coach must be there. That is exactly what Keshi’s counterpart in England is doing; every game you will see him at one league point. You don’t depend entirely on recommendation because if you do you won’t take the very best. And that would not give the best mirror of the Nigerian league. It is when you comb the nooks and corners of the country that you will see the very best of Nigerian league.

    World Cup

Football is not mathematics but on paper you would say Nigeria will walk through Iran and Bosnia Herzegovina. But the game proper is a different ball game. It is about those who can utilise the available chances they have in 90 minutes or given duration of play. Football is played within a particular length and breadth of a space guided by 90 minutes. So if you are able to utilise this space effectively within 90 minutes, whether you are Brazil, Serbia or Spain, if you are not able to utilise that space within 90 minutes, you will be defeated and nothing will happen. It is also played between 11 men and 11 men. And one mistake can cost a team.

So I am not used to predicting the outcome of games, but let our players be in the right frame of mind. Any result you get in the first game boosts your confidence and which is an essential ingredient in competition like the World Cup. They can now build on that. If there is no complacency, they can graduate from there and proceed in the competition. Let us also concentrate on taking one game at a time. All matches should be treated like it is the most important game.

    NPL Chairmanship

It was very easy to get me out. It was an organised crime against football. But I thank God that today every person that was involved in that orchestrated design are now fighting themselves. One, I stepped into a terrain that mortals would fear to tread. Where NFF and NPL chairmen always fear to tread; Title sponsorship. That was the area I got into. That was when I knew that football is very important to this country. I was summoned to Aso Rock to voice my opinion and thereafter I was asked to go in peace. Government understood football matters and in fairness to them the football house was asked to deal with it accordingly. The battlefield was now shifted to Akwa Ibom, where the NFF came out with that their judgement. And I tell you what happened in Uyo is still haunting Nigerian football till date. I do not have any enemy because I have settled with every one of them and I have forgiven them. I have moved on since then, but whether football would forgive them is what I don’t know.

I went into an election according to the statute governing the Premier League, as handed over by the NFF. We did screening. There was a petition and a body was set up to look into it and it was found out to be rubbish and thrown out. Then the matter went to the Appeals Committee, which is the final in football matters, as stated by FIFA. In the Appeals Committee they lost. Then it was like ‘no, this Owumi has to leave’ and so they conjured one Ibidapo Obe from nowhere and imagine a professor of law does not know there is a statute stating clearly how football matters should be handled and this is not one of them. So, because of Owumi, they circumvented their own rules and statutes, all to get Owumi out. But in Emeka Inyama’s case, they wanted to do the same thing to him, but the judge, a more respected person that was appointed as the arbitrator, told them that this matter cannot be handled otherwise since the man has gone through the hurdles as stated in the statutes. They were saying that I was not a chairman of a club, so tell me how many chairmen are voted for in Nigerian football? How many people are going by the appellation of Chairman of board? But a lot of them that are involved in that shame, justice has caught up with them. The law of Karma has caught up with them. It is just like the four way test; do onto others what you want them to do to you. It is a lesson for all of us. The issue is over but the traces would never die. Everything they did in 2010 is still there. The court cases are still there. It all started from there. So if you want to solve a problem, you trace back to where it all started. All the court cases today are a product of 2010. Until they go back, I’m not saying they should make me chairman of NPL but go back and correct all these mistakes statutorily and make it a uniform law that is sacrosanct and no matter whose ox is gored should not be circumvented. That is the only way that there would be peace in Nigerian football.

  • Warri Wolves depart for Tunisia today

Warri Wolves depart for Tunisia today

A 30 man team of Warri Wolves will depart Nigeria for the second leg of the CAF Confederation Cup with Edo FA Chairman, Abel Ehigie as head of the delegation to be assisted by Emmanuel Adesanya from the Nigeria Football Federation(NFF).

In a brief statement released to the press by the Media Manager of the club, Moses Etu, the team is made up of 18 players and 12 officials without Oghenekaro Etebo who is in Italy for trials and Captain Azubuike Egwekwe who got married last weekend.

According to Etu, the team will board a Moroccan Airline to Morocco before moving to Tunisia for the crucial match which comes up on Sunday in Tunisia.

Etu further said the team is well prepared to confront the Tunisians, hence, they have decided to go early to acclimatise before the make or mar encounter.

He, therefore, urged Nigerians to pray for them as the task of scaling through is not impossible.

” We know that it will not be easy but we also know that nothing is impossible before God hence, our appeal to all Nigerians is to continue to py for the team”.

  • Wolves on full throttle

    Wolves on full throttle

BASKING with supreme confidence following their discharge of Cameroun’s Union Dauola from the CAF Confederation Cup, Warri Wolves has put a warning to clubs in the Glo Premier League that it will open all salvos to blast through the league as they set to host El Kanemi Warriors in their opening match of the season.

Warri Wolves surprised fans with a 3-2 away win to Douala and a 1-1 draw at home to remain in contention for the Confederation Cup but club spokesman, Moses Etu, says their exploit against Doaula was just a tip of the iceberg as they focus now on the home league.

“I can assure you that Warri Wolves will blast full throttle. Believe me, our domestic league squad is stronger than our Confederation Cup squad and we will unleash full salvo against all teams in the premier league. In the first place, we have Azubuike Egwueke back in the team. He has been away on assignment with the Super Eagles. “He was not available for the two legs of our Confederation Cup. He will be back in action on Thursday against El Kanemi. Also, many of our players were not registered for the Confed Cup but they are available for the league. We have the likes of Daddy Bazuaye who just joined us from Cape Town FC in South Africa. We have Gbolahan Salami, from Shooting. He is a good top 9 but even at that he will have to battle with Musa Najere for that position, and Najere is scoring now.

“We also have the duo of Dan Akpeyi and Martins Oduchie who joined us from Heartland. Everybody knows that Akpeyi is a great keeper and he will have to battle his position out with Ambrose Vanzekin and Okiemute Odah who stopped a penalty against Douala in Cameroun. Martins scored against us when we went to Heartland last season and since then we had an eye on him and we have got him.

“With our first leg victory in Cameroun, we had the leverage to play in some players who have not tasted action for some time. Joseph Osadiaye alongside Brenda Ogbu and Bright Akpojuvwevwo were back in the return leg against Union. That has helped against match rustiness and keeps them in match form against the two warrior teams from Maiduguri and Abia. By the time we finish with them, they will find out that they are not warriors at all. “Good thing is that we are playing two straight home games. That reduces the fatigue of travels and gives room for better concentration and conditioning. I can also tell you that for now there is no injury in the camp and the players are very focused and enthusiastic. For us enthusiasm is important and we have it in Warri Wolves in addition to the experience and influence of the likes of Azubuike Egwueke. With Warri Wolves, there is no shaking.”

The oil city boys will host El Kanemi Warriors of Borno on Thursday and Abia Warriors on Sunday at the Warri City Stadium, and return to the continentals by upper weekend to host their next Confederation Cup opponents, Club Athletics Bizertin of Tunisia.

  • Warri wolves draw union de Douala , qualify for next round

Warri Wolves Football Club yesterday was forced to a 1-1 draw by the visiting Union De Douala Football Club of Cameroon in the second leg match of the CAF Confederation Cup played at the Warri City Stadium.

The encounter started on a sound note with both sides being cautious on how to make moves. But Warri Wolves dominated the greater part of first half making several incursions in the goal area but old not make it into the net.
The almost equal percentage of ball possession was maintained till the end of first half  as the blast of the whistle to end the half saw a barren score line.
The ding dong affair continued in second half with both side holding strong in their halfs, but Warri Wolves broke the jinx when No 9 shirted jersey  Musa Najere converted a penalty in the 53rd after the No 14 jersey, Oghenekaro Etebo was brought down in their opponent goal area.
Union Doaula F.C equalized the game in the 87th minute of play via a penalty that was neatly placed behind the net by the No 25 shirted jersey Djuno Christian. The match ended 1-1 at the end of regulation time. Warri Wolves missed a lot of scoring chances.
Speaking in an interview with newsmen at the end of the encounter, the Warri Wolves Technical Adviser, Paul Aigbogun, expressed happiness of the result and their qualification for the next round of the CAF Confederation Cup. He said there is need for the team to fortify its attack to get more results. He said he is looking ahead to the Premier League.
Union Douala Coach, Sabastian Roque, said they lost the match at home in Cameroon when Warri Wolves came visiting, adding that it was a good game though.

Warri wolves in Doula, complains of no water in their Hotel

However, the team was shocked to discover that the hotel, Akena City Hotel situated in Akwa area, Commercial Avenue of the Town has no water with the beds confirmed to be too small for a decent human being.
The President of the host team, Frank Happy expressed disappointment with the hotel arrangement but claimed it was the FA that provided the accommodation which is nothing to write home about.
The players who travelled with the team include goalkeeper Okiemut Odah, Ambrose Vanzekin, Goodluck Onamado, Ike ThankGod, Ojo Mine, Oke Ogagotewho, Uche Ossai, Egbeta Michael, Ikechukwu Ibenegbu, Musa Najare and Achibi Ewenike.

    Speaking on the antics of the host Federation, O wumi who is used to it urged the players to remain focussed and get ready for the battle ahead;
I am used to this type of antics but we should not allow this to distract us as we are here for a crucial assignment. I am not used to failure and I know that you will not fail me; said Owumi.
  • Wolves add bite with Salami

    Wolves add bite with Salami

Glo Premier League club, Warri Wolves, have confirmed that they have agreed personal terms with 3SC and Nigeria striker, Gbolahan Salami.

Wolves in a brief statement declared that they have agreed personal terms with Salami and Heartland goalkeeper, Daniel Akpeyi.

But they failed to disclosed the details of the personal terms and now expect Salami and Akpeyi to “resume in the next few days.”

“Warri Wolves have agreed personal terms with CHAN striker, Gbolahan Salami and goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi. Both of them will resume in the next few days. Hopefully, they will help in our quest to get a trophy this season,” a statement from the club read on Friday.

However, spokesman of 3SC, Jubril Arowolo confirmed to supersport.com that Salami is a free agent after he played with the Ibadan club on loan last season.

“I’ve confirmed from our secretariat that Gbolahan Salami is now a free agent. Before he left for the African Nations Championship (CHAN) he made a (verbal) commitment that he’ll stay with us until he gets a club abroad but he didn’t sign any contract to that effect,” explained Arowolo to supersport.com.

Wolves have now bolstered their attacking options after earlier hooking Brendan Ogbu, Daddy Bazuaye, Stanley Dimgba and Josiah Maduabuchi.
