Save us from hunger Warri Wolves’ players beg Delta govt

Players of Warri Wolves have again called on the Delta State government to offset their unpaid wages to help motivate them in the Glo Premier League title race.

Wolves, despite coming off a week-long strike over unpaid wages, thumped title rivals, Sunshine Stars, 3-0 with a commanding performance that saw Gbolahan Salami score a hat-trick.

Three of the influential players, who pleaded to speak with supersport.com after Saturday’s match, confirmed that they have been paid three out of six months salaries owed them but insisted that they are still unhappy with other financial obligations yet to be met by the club and its sponsor, the Delta State government.

“Most of us are family men and the major bread winners in our family. Imagine not being paid for months. We are grateful that we have been paid three months out of the six months salaries we are owed but to be honest most of those money have gone into paying debt and tuition fees of our children,” one of the players lamented.

Another Wolves star told supersport.com: “It is not what we expected as we had high hope of receving all of our money. Unfortunately we got just three months and I personally think we will be motivated if we are paid off our money as we are still in the title race and can win this. But right now the whole team is not so happy though like they say half bread is better than none. I still think that paying us everything we are owed will motivate us to win the title.”

The third player reeled out that the high cost of living is biting on him and some of the players who have wives and children to cater for as well as other dependants. “We do not have any other profession other than football. Some of us have to pay rent for the accommodation where our families live. We also have to pay tuition fees and other bills to run the home. Football is not a profession in which one can actually practice forever. That’s the reason we are calling on the government and the club to pay us our money as we are grateful for the part-payment so far.”

Already the League Management Company (LMC), which oversees the running of the top flight in Nigeria, had written to Wolves’ management to remind it of a 60-day deadline to pay up their players or face a six-point deduction. That deadline elapses on October 24.

“You are hereby reminded that the 60-day period, within which you are expected to remedy the breach, will lapse on October 24, 2015. Be advised that your club will become liable to the initial deduction of six points, should you fail to meet the deadline,” part of the LMC letter to Wolves read.

The LMC also urged the players of Wolves “to adhere to the grievance procedure and the rules and regulations of the league” as stated in the competition’s framework and rules which allows the players to give a 45-day notice to the club and 15 days for the LMC to resolve any dispute including financial obligation.

Players of Wolves claim they are still owed three months salaries, 115 per cent signing-on fees from last season as well as 10 league match bonuses and seven bonuses in the CAF Confederation Cup.

Warri Wolves, owned and financed by the Delta State government, are currently second in the standings of the Glo Premier League with 55 points, three behind leaders, Enyimba.

Enugu Rangers shocked Warri Wolves 1-0 at the Warri City Stadium yesterday in a Glo Premier League Week 13 tie.

Rasaq Adegbite’s 18th minute stunner was all the Flying Antelopes needed to record their first away win of the season and their first victory in Warri for a very long time.

The Flying Antelopes have been dogged by bad results and this culminated in the suspension of former head coach, Kelechi Emeteole. In came Imama Amapakabor who has been struggling to steady the team.

Rangers have 17 points from 13 games and can’t afford to rest on their oars with tough home matches against Sunshine Stars and Kano Pillars ahead in Enugu.

CAF Confederation Cup: Warri Wolves under pressure – Owumi

Chairman, CEO Warri Wolves, Davidson Owumi has said they will leave no stone unturned and do everything possible to overturn their 3-0 deficit next week when they host AC Leopards in the final leg of the CAF Confederations Cup play-offs.

According to him, their status as Nigeria’s sole survivors on the continent has increased the pressure and burden of expectation.

” Naturally our position comes with a lot of pressure, because the burden of club football rests on our shoulders and it can be very demanding.

” We are trying to ease the pressure to the players, we’ve told them to go into the game and enjoy the atmosphere,” Owumi told www.footballlive.ng.

” And it would have been better for the football club if we had other teams still competing. It would take some pressure of us.

” Give or take we have done well from the qualification to the knock out rounds and now we are going to give it a really good fight to make sure we make Nigeria proud.”

Warri Wolves to hit Dolisie on Thursday

Nigeria flag-bearers Warri Wolves have concluded plans to arrive in the Congolese town of Dolisie on Thursday for the CAF Confederation Cup play-off, first leg against homers AC Leopards on Sunday.

A 30-man contingent will travel aboard an Ethiopian Airline aircraft from the Murtala Muhammed International Airport and transit in Addis Ababa before flying to Dolisie, a city with which a couple of Nigerian teams are familiar with.

Leopards eliminated Nigerian teams Heartland FC and Kano Pillars from continental club competitions some years ago, albeit on the away goals rule, and will be confident hosting the Warri boys.

The Congolese team was eliminated from this year’s CAF Champions League by Smouha of Egypt – incidentally the same Egyptian side that eliminated Nigerian representatives Enyimba FC.

Wolves have an impressive record in this year’s competition, winning five of their six matches and drawing the other – 0-0 against Dedebit FC away in Ethiopia after a 2-0 first leg win.

In the preliminary round, the Paul Aigbogun boys piped Racing Club Bobo-Dioulasso 1-0 in Burkina Faso and then swept to a three-goal win in the return. In the second round, they edged FC Etancheite of Democratic Republic of Congo 2-1 in Warri before winning 1-0 in Kinshasa.

Defender Semiu Liadi, who has a tooth problem, was left out while Sikiru Alimi took the place of Onyekachi Okafor with Micheal Okoyoh coming in as the 18th player.

The big news is that Solomon Kwambe, who has not had a kick of the ball, will make his debut against Dolphins having been certified fit by the team doctor which means Goodluck Onamado may have to keep a place on the bench.

The 18-man squad includes goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi, who has successfully wrestled the number one position, as well as Tejiri Rhiogbere, Azubuike Egwuekwe, Oke Ogagatewho, Solomon Kwambe, Goodluck Onamado, Ojo Mine and Ichul Lordson.

    • To face MK Etanchéité of DR Congo next

Warri Wolves’ goalkeeper, Daniel Akpeyi was the hero as the Seasiders cruised to the second round of the CAF Confederation Cup 2-0 on aggregate after they held hosts, Dedebit FC of Ethiopia to a goalless draw in Addis Ababa yesterday.

The Seasiders defeated Dedebit FC 2-0 in Warri three weeks ago through the goals of Oghenekaro Etebo and Gbolahan Salami but the Ethiopians threatened a fight back at home when they visited Nigeria the last time.

They disturbed Warri Wolves and created several scoring chances but Warri Wolves Media Manager, Moses Etu told SportingLife that Akpeyi came to the club’s rescue including stopping a first half penalty to ensure that the Nigerian reps cruise to the next round.

Warri Wolves will face MK Etanchéité of Democratic Republic of Congo in the second round and they will have the task of hosting the side first in Warri on April 19 before the return leg on the weekend of May 1-3.

Itoya confident of Warri Wolves’ chances in Ethiopia

Warri Wolves  Itoya has told SportingLife that the Seasiders have put aside all their internal strife to concentrate on their weekend’s CAF Confederation Cup first round, second leg tie

against Dedebit of Ethiopia. Wolves won the first leg 2-0 in Warri but their are fears in different quarters that the weekend’s hosts may make use of their high attitude to upturn the result in their favour in Addis Ababa.

The players of Warri Wolves recently embarked on a strike to press home their unpaid entitlements from that of the last season and they called off the strike last Thursday after the management released only two match bonuses of the three remaining from last season.

Itoya told SportingLife that they have put their unpaid entitlements aside in order for the team to be well prepared for the return leg tie slated for Sunday in Addis Ababa.

  • DELSU beats Warri Wolves in a friendly

Students of the Delta State University (DELSU) in Abraka were recently in jubilation when the school’s football team beat Warri Wolves in a friendly match by 1-0.

The match was one of the friendlies the Warri Wolves played in preparation for the new season of Globacom Premier League. Hundreds of students trooped to the Sport Centre of the institution to watch the match.

The Warri Wolves were expected to dominate the match, given their array of star players but the varsity team proved to be a difficult side, matching their opponents in skills and tactics.

In the first 25 minutes, Anthony Obiorah, a 200-Level Industrial Chemistry student, scored a goal to put the varsity team on the lead. The spectators almost invaded the pitch after the goal in joy.

Efforts by the Warri Wolves to equalise were rendered useless by the varsity team, who held sway throughout the 80-minute event.

At the end of the encounter, the DELSU team Coach, Tosan Blankson, said he was proud of his boys, saying: “The objective of this match is to groom our players to be professional footballers.”

The Warri Wolves team Coach, Goddan Ogbe, said the match was a challenge for his side, adding that the club would go back to the drawing board to make corrections on the lapses noticed during the match.

From the Sport Centre, students matched to other parts of the campus to celebrate the feat. The goal scorer, Anthony, was carried on the shoulder amid the excitement. He said his side won because of the spirit of cooperation embeded in the team.

The responsibility to prepare Warri Wolves for the 2014/2015 Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) opener against newly promoted Gabros Int’l and the first leg of the CAF Confederation Cup match against Dedebit  FC of Ethiopia on March 15, will now be the sole responsibility of Wolves Chief Coach, Sam Okpodu.

Okpodu will take charge of the Seasiders because of the departure of the team’s technical adviser, Paul Aigbogun to the United Kingdom, for the NFF organised capacity enhancing programme which will last two weeks.

Okpodu, who once featured for the then Green Eagles and known for his knack for goals will work with the other assistants, coach Anosike and coach Atune Jolomi in what is regarded as an uphill task but surmountable.

According to the Media Manager of Warri Wolves, Etu Moses, Aigbogun officially handed over to the assistant coaches led by Sam Okpodu with an advice to do their best by winning the two matches.
