  • Wike’s weak position

    Wike’s weak position

His language is vulgar. His mien is coarse and brutish. His ambience invokes violence. His name is Nyesom Wike, and, believe it or not, he is a governor. When he is not lying about Rivers State money in the posh apartment in Victoria Island and even swearing before the Almighty in church, he is denying his voice in a filthy conversation with an electoral officer. The best way to approach him is to see him as a burst of humour in an increasingly humourless country.

Recently, he sided with a law that supports a military throwback. The law even supports well-heeled company against his own people. It’s the NLNG  law that grants the gas firm a holiday from paying three percent of its N500 billion yearly profit to help with development in the region.

The army, with its pecuniary interest, forbade NLNG from paying that relatively small sum. Wike stands against his country and his people. He railed at those who want NLNG to pay. Some say he would have thought otherwise if Jonathan were in office today.

The man gave no reason of any intellectual quality. In his boorish way, he roared against reason, even though the House of representatives has already weighed in on the side of the people and wants NLNG to pay.

NLNG says it is not oil-producing. A cop-out indeed. You want to eat where you did not sow. So it wants to enjoy a tax-free life while others who did the yeoman’s job are paying. It’s like saying I cooked the soup, but I should not be held responsible for how the onions entered the kitchen. That’s too complicated for a Wike. And I understand why.

Wike: loyal ex-commissioners will be reappointed

Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike has explained that the dissolution of the State Executive Council was done in consultation with the leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party  (PDP) in the state.

Speaking during a Thanksgiving Service in honour of the Majority Whip of the Rivers State House of Assembly at St Martin’s Anglican Church, Ogu yesterday, Wike said the dissolution  was done to rejig the machinery of government to move the  state forward.

He said: “This is when you know  those who are loyal  and those  who are not loyal. There  is no crack in government.  We are working together. The  dissolution  was done in consultation with the leadership of PDP  in the state.

“You must work with those who are loyal.  Those who are  not loyal will be shown the way  out. Those who are loyal will come back.  When you are going into another dispensation, you have to put things in order”.

The governor said the dissolution of the State Executive Council was done  at the appropriate  time, saying that most states have already  dissolved  their respective  Executive Councils.

“In government, there are those hungry  to come in and those hungry to go. If you are a political appointee, you must expect any eventuality , ” he said.

The governor said the administration  will continue  to deliver  on its promises  to people.

He  lauded the Majority Whip of the Rivers House of Assembly, Mr Evans Bipi for his unwavering loyalty  at the beginning of the struggle for the enthronement of a New Rivers State.

The governor said: “When people never  gave us hope, Evans Bipi was reliable.  Bipi is a very loyal and committed person. Bipi is among the first group of supporters that  we had”.

He thanked the people of Ogu/Bolo for supporting  Evans Bipi all through the rerun elections in the area.

He directed the contractors handling the rehabilitation of schools in Ogu/Bolo Local Government Area to speed up work.

Bipi assured Wike of the support of the people of Ogu/Bolo.

The event was graced by former members of the Rivers State Executive Council, religious leaders and caretaker committee chairmen.

  • Wike sacks Rivers commissioners

RIVERS State Governor Nyesom Wike yesterday sacked all his commissioners.

He also dissolved the State Executive Council.

The mass sack was contained in a statement by the governor’s Special Assistant, Electronic Media, Simeon Nwakaudu.

The governor directed all former commissioners to handover to their respective Permanent Secretaries.

According to the statement, “Governor Wike thanked the former commissioners for their service to the state and wished them well in their future endeavours.”

No reason was given for the sack, which is coming just more than 24 hours after the Commissioner for Works Bathuel Harrison was sacked by the governor for undisclosed reason.

The Commissioner for Information and Communications, Austin Tam-George, had resigned his appointment less than 24 hours after the sack of Harrison.

  • Wike brokers peace amongst feuding groups

Rivers State governor, Nyesom Wike, has declared that host communities of Indorama Petrochemicals will henceforth manage their stakes in the company.

Governor Wike announced the decision at the Government House, Port Harcourt, after a meeting with the host communities, Elelenwo -Akpajo-Aleto-Njuru-Okerewa (ELANO) and Indorama Petrochemicals to resolve the conflict surrounding the management of the stakes of host communities in the company.

Responding on behalf of the host communities, Chief Nwokolu Dimpkante said the peace brokered by the state governor is what Eleme people yearn for.

  • Amaechi to Wike: Shut up or I expose your wife

Amaechi to Wike: Shut up or I expose your wife

The Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, on Tuesday threatened to expose the wife of Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, if he does not shut his mouth.

The minister also noted that contrary to allegations by Wike that his wife and family are involved in government business, said his wife was just a trader.

Amaechi spoke after inspecting facilities at the Kaduna Inland Dry Port.

He said: “They have a governor who is a child. By accident of Goodluck Jonathan because I don’t want to attribute it to God but by whatever, he entered office and starts talking about my wife and family.

“When I was a governor, nobody had access to government business, not even my wife and siblings. Even as minister, nobody had access to government business because it is not a family business but a government business.

“The problem with Nyesom Wike and I want to say it clearly that if he does not shut up his mouth and do his work, I will bring his wife into focus.

“I have been very matured not to bring his wife out but if Wike does not close his mouth and talk about my wife anymore, I would bring out his wife.

On whether his wife collected any contract or money, Amaechi said: “my wife would never to that. We don’t do family business. All I care about is transparency, my wife is a trader, she buys and sells and Wike knows that.”

On the accusation that he squandered money, the minister replied: “You believe that? Is it the same man who said I have $50 million in Lagos and could not prove you would believe? Or the man that said I didn’t pay salary until I left office and he later says no, it’s pension I didn’t pay?  You believe such a man?

“As usual he was given how many hours on television and they cut me off when I came and put disclaimer. The television station gave Wike all the opportunity to say the rubbish he has to say without facts. He has no facts and he was allowed to malign people’s character.”

On the approval of the Judicial Commission of Enquiry by the court, he said: “How do we know how the court arrived at its decision? We were not given fair hearing. We were not even informed. There is a panel of justices in Rivers State, which is the Court of Appeal and by the time we knew it, they took the matter from them and gave to a panel that came from Adamawa.”

  • Ikoyi cash: Rivers APC accuses Wike of fresh plot to tarnish Amaechi’s image

Ikoyi cash: Rivers APC accuses Wike of fresh plot to tarnish Amaechi’s image

    •He was indicted, says governor

The Rivers State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC),  yesterday said it has uncovered a plot by Governor Nyesom Wike of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to tarnish the image of Minister of Transportation  Rotimi Amaechi, who is the leader of APC in the state, on the Ikoyi cash.

Rivers APC, through its Publicity Secretary, Chris Finebone, noted that the plot to rubbish Amaechi, the immediate governor of the state, would involve manifest falsehood, soon to be placed in the media.

Wike, however, alleged that Amaechi was indicted for stealing billions of public funds, by a court-approved judicial panel of inquiry, set up by his administration.

The main opposition APC in Rivers also revealed that the plot against the transportation minister would involve extensive forgeries and fabrications of various seemingly-sensitive documents to further buttress the lie that the Osborne Road, Ikoyi money, confiscated by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), belonged to Amaechi and that he allegedly obtained it from the coffers of Rivers government, while he was governor of the state.

The party said: “Initially, when Wike claimed that the Osborne Road, Ikoyi money belonged to Rivers State, the EFCC presented an ample opportunity for the Rivers governor to step forward and provide evidence and possibly pick up the money, but he (Wike) chickened out, until the period granted by the court elapsed. Wike did not take advantage of that window, because he had no iota of evidence and he knew it. The present devilish efforts by Wike to pour tar on Amaechi will go the futile way of the governor’s previous efforts.

“APC is saddened that more than two years after being sworn in as the governor of Rivers State, Wike is still hell-bent on destroying the image of his former boss, benefactor and predecessor. We wish to remind him that his evil plans for the man who gave him a lift in life will continue to fail to his grief.

“We note that instead of aimlessly deceiving himself in his cocoon of self-delusion that he can bring down Amaechi, the APC would like the Rivers governor to settle the scores he has with his own dishonorable reputation of lies and deceit.

“Wike stood before God and men in a church in Etche LGA of Rivers State to lie, when he claimed that the Federal Government was undermining his government by slashing the state’s monthly allocations. He refused to tell the truth that he had earlier pledged a good chunk of the state’s future monthly allocations as collateral security to commercial banks for the huge loans he took at double digit interest rate.

“Like in the case of the federal allocations, the Rivers governor recently told another group of clergymen during a church programme that the Federal Government paid the state only N17 billion as refund on Paris Club loan and not N34 billion, as claimed by the Federal Government. However, evidence made available to the APC by officials of Federal Ministry of Finance indicates that Wike actually signed and collected N34 billion as Paris Club loan refund for Rivers State.”

Rivers APC also stated that it was convinced that Wike, fearing that his lies were about to be made public, decided to raise spurious allegations against the minister of transportation, being his usual style of diverting attention and shifting the focus of public scrutiny from himself.

It noted that if indeed the Rivers governor had any credible evidence that the Ikoyi cash belonged to Amaechi or Rivers government, he would have joyfully approached the EFCC and the court to claim the money, stressing that the present attempt to raise spurious claims, through concocted documents, was mere smokescreen to cover up the obvious lack of transparent governance by Wike.

APC called on Rivers people in particular and Nigerians in general to disregard all forms of fabricated stories that Wike was about floating in the public space through print and electronic media, as well as on the Internet, maintaining that it would continue to deconstruct, demobilise and discredit the grand deceit that the Rivers governor and his mafia government represented.

Wike, through Rivers Commissioner for Information and Communications, Dr. Austin Tam-George, also accused Amaechi of relocating to Port Harcourt to impose a governor on Rivers state, through subterfuge and electoral gerrymandering in 2019, describing the actions as a classic case of a rapist returning to his victim to ask for love.

Rivers governor said: “It is important to constantly remind a forgetful public, that Mr. Amaechi was indicted for stealing billions of public funds, by a court-approved judicial panel of inquiry, set up by the State Government.

“Even by the standards of Nigerian political misbehavior, Mr. Amaechi’s record presents a unique and intriguing specimen.

“Here is a man, whose brazen refusal to pay pensioners their entitlements for six months, contributed to the deaths of hundreds of senior citizens in Rivers State, between 2014 and 2015.

“Mr. Amaechi’s thoughtless policies and reckless public spending literally broke the economic spine of Rivers State. His administration was marked by myth making and public deceit.

“Throughout the 2015 political campaigns, the APC presented itself as a better alternative to the PDP. Mr Amaechi’s adjectival insistence that he is the ‘leader’ of the APC in Rivers State is the clearest indication of the moral carcass that the party of ‘change’ has become in Nigeria.”

Wike admonished Rivers people and other Nigerians to ignore the lies of Amaechi and his factionalised APC.

  • Wike to Fed Govt: give us true federalism

Wike to Fed Govt: give us true federalism

Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike has called for what he described as true federalism where all federating units are allowed to develop in line with their potentials and resources.

The governor emphasised  that the demand for true federalism simply means that Rivers people believe  in a united Nigeria, where  no section  is denied the control of her resources.

The governor,  who spoke at the Government House Port Harcourt on Tuesday night when the Rivers State Government  hosted the Ambassador of the United States of America to Nigeria, Mr William Symington to a State Banquet, also called on the government of the United States of America to set up a Visa Office in Port Harcourt  to  cater for  the Southsouth and Southeast.

He said: “We are clamouring for true federalism.  When you talk true federalism, they think  you don’t want to  be part of the  country. We talk about true federalism as practiced in America.  A true presidential system where all the Federating units will be allowed to enjoy their resources and contribute to the centre.

“That means we believe that there must be a country called Nigeria.  All of us will work together for the unity of the  country”.

He explained  that Rivers people  seek equity, fairness and justice in the country, stating that the right framework  must be established  to ensure that all states excel at their pace.

On the request for the United States Government to set up a Visa Office in Port Harcourt, Governor Wike said the visa will resolve  the issue of equity  and justice as the Abuja office serves the north and Lagos office serves the South West.

He assured that the American Ambassador that  the state is safe for business, pledging that his administration will partner with investors, as the right environment  has already been created.

“Forget about the media propaganda.  This state is an opposition state . Therefore, don’t expect them to say it is the best.  But, we are the best state. We are doing  everything to ensure that investors  do profitable business under the ambit of the law”, Governor Wike said.

Symington commended Nigerians for the unity of the country.

He said Nigeria is a great country because of the contributions of Nigerians.

“Nigeria will be great and I expect a super power and a super partner “, he said.

The Ambassador of the United States of America to Nigeria  was accompanied by the Consul General , John Bray.

  • Insecurity in Rivers: Abe urges Wike, PDP to be serious for once

The senator representing Rivers Southeast Senatorial District,   Magnus Abe, has asked Governor Nyesom Wike and other members of his Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to be serious for once, on insecurity in the state.

Abe, yesterday in Port Harcourt, in a statement by his Spokesperson, Parry Benson, wondered why Wike and his PDP “hirelings” would not take seriously, the patriotic advice of a ranking senator, with regard to insecurity in Rivers, but he (governor) rather chose to play politics with the sensitive issue.

He noted that he recently spoke about insecurity in Rivers state, but unfortunately, Wike trivialised the issue, only to later admit that there was insecurity in the Niger Delta state and subsequently set up the Rivers Amnesty Programme, headed by Kenneth Chinda.

Abe, a former Secretary to the Rivers State Government (SSG), also stated that commonsense and reason ought to have made the Rivers government to think towards the direction of his advice, with a view to tackling insecurity in the state.

He said: “Rather than taking the issue of insecurity in Rivers State very seriously, as a responsible government, the Rivers governor and his PDP chose to trivialise the matter, by accusing Senator Abe of arming bad boys.

“The accusations by Wike and Rivers PDP lack substance and intended to make a joke of a serious matter.

“Investors are fast leaving Rivers State, which has nothing to do with the alleged factionalisation of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state, as claimed by Wike and Rivers Chairman of the PDP, Felix Obuah.

“Members of the fictionalised PDP should mind their business. Rivers APC members and leaders have mechanisms to settle their differences, if any.

“Every patriotic and sincere Rivers person should be concerned about the increasing insecurity in the state. I wonder why Wike’s government will not heed the patriotic call to quickly address insecurity in Rivers State.”

The senator also stated that Ogoni people,  especially the youths, were behind him and believe in his activities.

Abe noted that beginning with the present federal budget, he had outlined some of his progressive projects that would be of immense benefits to Ogoni youths and other people of his senatorial district.

  • N100b revenue in five months: Wike has no excuse for non-performance, says Peterside

N100b revenue in five months: Wike has no excuse for non-performance, says Peterside

The governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State during the 2015 election, Dr. Dakuku Peterside, has stated that Governor Nyesom Wike has no excuse for non-performance, in view of the N100 billion revenue his administration has received from the federation account in the last five months.

He also described non-performance as the hallmark of Wike’s administration.

Peterside, in a statement yesterday by his Media Team, lauded the Federal Ministry of Finance for revealing that Rivers got the highest amount of N34 billion from Paris Club refund, in addition to over N75 billion accruing to the state from federal allocations in the past five months.

He said: “There is nothing on the ground to suggest that Rivers State received the huge amount of money, especially with the sustained insecurity, inability to pay pensioners and staff of the Rivers State Sustainable Development Agency (RSSDA) and non-employment of Rivers youths, among other outstanding obligations.

“The Rivers governor is busy brandishing projects executed by the immediate past administration of Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi and trying to claim credit for same.”

Peterside, who is also the Director-General of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), said Wike was running the affairs of the state to the detriment of the majority.

He lamented the high level of insecurity in many parts of the state, adding that Wike has failed in the area of his primary responsibility.

The NIMASA chief said: “The first responsibility of a state governor is security of lives and property. Despite the huge revenues that have come the way of our state, Wike is yet to understand that governance goes beyond carrying out a handful of projects. The will to ensure security of lives and property and provision of jobs for our teeming youths go hand in hand.

“Unemployment is on the rise and this is what is fueling criminality and crimes in the state. Rivers youth have been abandoned to their fate, with no clear policy to enable them to achieve their aspirations.

“With the amount of money the governor has received in the last five months, in addition to over N100 billion borrowed from banks, there is no reason why our state should not be better secure and courting favours of investors.

“Since Wike became governor, no major investor, either foreign or local, has looked the way of Rivers State. Despite wasting our money in hosting all manner of events, no serious attempt has been made to employ our youths. Rather than create employment, the Rivers governor has made more people jobless. All visionary policies and programmes of his predecessor (Rotimi Amaechi) have become moribund.

“The only company engaged in any massive project in Rivers state today is the Nigerian Liquefied Natural Gas (NLNG) on Bonny Island and we all know the roles played by former Governor Amaechi (now Transcription Minister) to bring the headquarters to Rivers State.”

Peterside, a former member of the House of Representatives, also called on Wike to listen to Rivers people and make his administration open and transparent for citizens to know what accrues to the state and how their commonwealth was being utilised, not for the benefit of a few, but for everybody.

  • Wike didn’t invite me to ‘Rivers at 50’ – Dickson

Wike didn’t invite me to ‘Rivers at 50’ – Dickson

Bayelsa State Governor of Bayelsa Seriake Dickson has explained he was absent at Rivers State’s 50th anniversary because the host Governor Nyesom Wike didn’t invite him.

In a statement by his Chief Press Secretary Daniel Iworiso-Markson, Dickson said neither he nor the state was invited to the celebration.

He explained he has refused not to respond to verbal attacks on him by Wike because of the respect he (Dickson) has for the state and people of Rivers.

Dickson said he would have been present at the event if invited or involved his government in planning of the event.

Bayelsa State was carved out of Old Rivers State in 1996.

He regretted the non-involvement of Bayelsa at the anniversary celebration despite historical ties of the two sister states.

Yet, Dickson congratulated the government and the good people of Rivers State for a well-deserved Golden Jubilee.

The governor expressed shock over the non-involvement of Bayelsa in the anniversary but said his government was ever-willing to partner with Rivers State in the best interest of the Niger Delta.

He also maintained that the bond between the two states was very strong, stressing despite all the distractions and propaganda sponsored against his government, all Bayelsans still regarded Rivers as their home.

Dickson also acknowledged the attacks on his person by Wike but said in deference to the good people of Rivers State, he would not take issues with him.

Describing himself as an older governor, Dickson insisted that Bayelsa and Rivers were not rivals but sisters adding working together would bring greater benefits to the state.
