I’m vindicated over PDP zoning of Presidency to South, chairmanship to North – Wike

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Nyesom Wike on Monday described the zoning of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the South and retaining the National Chairman of the party in the North as clear vindication of his position and that of the G-5’s position in 2022.

The Minister’s Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and Social Media, Lere Olayinka,  who reacted to the zoning in a statement in Abuja asked;  “Now, that the party has realised its mistake of not listening to Wike and the G-5 in 2022, and have chosen to do what they said, three years after, have they not been vindicated now?”

“Recall that the FCT Minister and the G-5 had insisted that the presidential candidate of the PDP and its National Chairman must not remain in the same zone, insisting that since Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, from the North had emerged as the presidential candidate,  Senator Iyorchia Ayu, also from the North must resign to pave the way for a National Chairman from the South. Ayu, however insisted on not resigning, with Atiku and his group backing him. Aftermath of this was the electoral misfortune the party suffered in 2023, followed by instability after the elections.

“But today, the NEC resolved that since the National Chairman of the party is zoned to the North, the PDP 2027 Presidential ticket be zoned to the South.

“Has PDP not come back to eat its own vomit?

“Sadly, they know the truth. Wike simply said, take the chairmanship to the South if you want to gain the presidency, but they said no, they must take the two, and the PDP lost!

“They have realised the mistake they made in 2022 and are correcting it in 2025. But is it not too late already, bearing in mind that the only way the zoning can be justified is for the South to conclude its eight years, while the presidency returns to the North in 2031?”

Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike yesterday promised to align with anyone who supports President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to deliver dividends of democracy to Nigerians.

He urged FCT residents to align with those supporting the Federal Government.

Wike spoke in the company of a former lawmaker representing the FCT, Senator Philip Aduda, and the Chairman of the Abuja Municipal Area Council, Christopher Maikalangu, during the kick-off of Lot 2 of Water Supply Projects in Karu.

The minister hailed both men for their capacity and for bringing development to the residents, promising the construction of a two-kilometre road in Karu, following Aduda’s request.

He said support would always come to those who continue to support the Tinubu administration.

Wike also hailed the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC) Executive Chairman, Christopher Zakka Maikalangu, as “very good and hardworking”.

The minister noted that the latter had used his access to the government to deliver several projects to the residents of the area council.

He promised his administration’s support for Maikalangu if he wins his re-election bid as the council chairman.

“There is a road which you said is about two kilometres, is it not? Consider it done. You know, one thing about government and politics: support those who are capable of bringing something to the people. Support those the government will listen to.

“From what happened now, you see that with Aduda and the government, he has his ear where he is. That’s why the government asked: Where is that road he mentioned? Consider it done.

“You can see that since he (Maikalangu) became the Chairman of AMAC, he has brought the government to do Saburi Road, he has brought the government to do Kabusa-Takushere Road, and he has brought the government to redo this road. He has brought the government to do Deidei Road.

“For me, I’m here to talk about those who have access to the government and bring something to the people.

“The chairman has access to us. Anything he tells us, we will do. This is the only man I know. If he wins as chairman of AMAC, we will give him whatever he wants. I don’t know the party he belongs to. But I know that he supports President Tinubu. Anybody who supports Tinubu, I will support him,” Wike said.

The minister said past governments failed to provide the needs of the people, particularly water supply, to the communities in Karu.

He stressed that the Tinubu administration has fulfilled its promise to provide potable water to satellite towns.

UPDATED: I will back Tinubu’s supporters – Wike

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory Nyesom Wike, on Thursday vowed to support anybody who supports President Bola Tinubu to deliver the dividends of democracy.

Wike advised FCT residents to support those who have the ears of the government.

The minister said this while commending former lawmaker representing the FCT, Senator Philip Aduda, and the Chairman of the Abuja Municipal Area Council, Christopher Maikalangu, during the flag-off of Lot 2 of Water Supply Projects in Karu.

Wike hailed both men for their capacity and for bringing development to the people, while promising the construction of a 2km road in Karu site, on the request of Aduda.

The minister said he would always throw his weight behind those who continue to support the Tinubu-led administration.

He further commended the AMAC Chairman, Maikalangu, as “very good and hardworking”, noting that the latter had used his access to government to deliver several projects to his residents in the area council, adding that his administration will do, whatever he asked if he (Maikalangu) won his re-election bid as council chairman.

“There is a road which you said is about 2km, is it not? Consider it done. You know, one thing about government and politics, support those who have capacity to bring something to the people. Support those that the government will listen to.

“From what happened now, you see that Aduda, the government, has his ear where he is. And that’s why the government said where is that road he mentioned? Consider it done.

I don’t know the party he belongs to. But I know that he supports Tinubu. Anybody who supports Tinubu, I will support him,” Wike said.

The minister said past governments had failed to provide the needs of the people, particularly water supply to the communities in Karu, noting that the government of Tinubu has fulfilled its promise to provide potable water to satellite towns.

He said; “We have had a government who stayed here for five years, isn’t that correct? We have had a government who stayed here for eight years too, is that correct? Has any government come to say, look, we will provide you water? Have you had water before? Did this government promise it will give you water? Have we come now to give you water?

“So, you believe you have a covenant with this government. And the covenant is like somebody said, agreement is agreement. So, the people of Karu, you will readily remember the government that remembers you, is it not correct?

“Will you remember those who had the opportunity and they refused to do anything for you? Will you remember those who left Karu unattended, will you remember them? So, we have come to fulfil the promise we made to you, that you must have clean and potable water”.

Aduda represented the FCT on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party between 2011 and 2015, and was re-elected in 2015 and again in 2019, before losing the seat in the 2023 general elections.

Maikalangu is seeking re-election as Chairman of AMAC in the forthcoming February 2026 Area Council elections, on the platform of the ruling All Progressives Congress, after defecting from the PDP in 2024.

Earlier, the FCT Minister of State, Dr. Mariya Mahmoud, described water as one of the most essential resources for life and development. She noted that the project underscored President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which continues to yield tangible benefits for rural communities.

According to her, potable water sustains health, supports agriculture, drives industry, and maintains ecosystems. She extended profound appreciation to the President for prioritizing projects that directly touch the lives of ordinary citizens.

On his part, the Executive Secretary of the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA), Richard Yohanna Dauda, explained that the Karu Water Project would involve the construction of about 194 kilometers of transmission and distribution pipelines.

The water project, which will form part of the projects to be commissioned to mark the third anniversary of President Tinubu’s administration, is expected to deliver safe and reliable drinking water to nearly 334,000 residents of Karu and its environs.

Officials noted that the project would not only upgrade municipal infrastructure but also enhance livelihoods, promote social equity, and advance sustainable development in satellite communities of the FCT.

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has pledged to back individuals and leaders who align themselves with President Bola Tinubu’s administration, urging residents to rally behind those “the government will listen to.”

Wike made the remarks on Thursday during the flag-off of Lot 2 of the Water Supply Projects in Karu, where he commended former FCT senator, Philip Aduda, and Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC) Chairman, Christopher Maikalangu, for bringing development to their people.

Responding to Aduda’s request for road construction in Karu, the minister promised immediate action.

“There is a road that you said is about 2km, isn’t it? Consider it done. One thing about government and politics: support those who have the capacity to bring something to the people. Support those that the government will listen to,” Wike said.

He further praised Maikalangu, describing him as “very good and hardworking,” noting that the AMAC chairman had used his government access to deliver several projects.

I don’t know the party he belongs to. But I know that he supports Tinubu. Anybody who supports Tinubu, I will support him,” Wike declared.

The minister also slammed past governments for neglecting satellite communities like Karu, particularly in the provision of potable water.

“We have had governments that stayed here for five years, even eight years. Did any come to provide you with water? No. But this government promised, and today we are fulfilling it,” he said.

Aduda, a former three-term senator on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), lost his seat in the 2023 general elections. Meanwhile, Maikalangu, who defected from the PDP to the All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2024, is seeking re-election as AMAC chairman in the February 2026 Area Council elections.

  • Tinubu not unapproachable, says Wike

    Tinubu not unapproachable, says Wike

Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike has dismissed a claim by former Secretary to the Government of the Federation(SGF) Babachir Lawal that President Bola Tinubu and his administration are not approachable.

“When you say Mr President is unapproachable and the government is unapproachable, what do you call a government?” Wike asked while fielding questions on a national television programme yesterday.

He explained that Tinubu couldn’t attend to everyone when he has hundreds of public office holders who should serve as the first line of contact.

The minister revealed that Lawal was attacking the President for not choosing him as his running mate after emerging as the All Progressives Congress(APC) candidate in 2023.

Wike, who also launched a scathing attack on former Transport Minister Rotimi Amaechi and the opposition African Democratic Congress(ADC), said: “If everybody in this country refuses to reach out to ministers or special advisers and just wants to see Mr President, how many people can he attend to at a time?’’

He maintained that governance involves teamwork and that Nigerians should engage ministers and presidential special advisers rather than expect direct access to the president.

Wike revealed that  Lawal visited him in his Port Harcourt, Rivers State residence shortly after Kashim Shettima was announced as Tinubu’s running mate.

“Babachir came to my house in Port Harcourt with a former Speaker of the House of Representatives. His grievance was clear. He thought Mr. President would choose him as vice president.

“Having not been picked, he let loose. That is the root of his bitterness,” Wike said.

He faulted Lawal for resorting to “abuse rather than genuine criticism,” stressing that the former SGF’s harsh words about the president were unbecoming.

“This is unfortunate,” Wike said. “How can a man who once dined with the President come out to call him arrogant simply because he was not chosen? Nigerians must see through that.”

Lawal had, while featuring on the same television programme last week, also said that the results of the 2023 presidential election in his possession showed that Tinubu did win. He added that he would have either resigned or been sacked if he had been made a member of the Federal Executive Council.

Besides flaying the former SGF, Wike responded to   Amaechi’s criticisms of the Tinubu administration.

He said that  Amaechi lacked the moral authority to speak on corruption, citing unresolved issues from his(Amaechi) time as governor.

“Amaechi cannot fight corruption because he is himself a very corrupt man,” Wike said pointedly. ‘’A man comes to tell you he will solve the issue of corruption in one month. But this same man closed down the state high court for almost two years. Can such a man fight corruption?

“ Can there be good governance without the rule of law? He refused to obey the National Judicial Council. That is corruption in itself.”

The FCT minister referenced judicial inquiries, which he said indicted Amaechi.

“He was indicted. He went to court. The court said, yes, the panel was right. He went to the Court of Appeal. The Court of Appeal said the panel was right. He went to the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court affirmed the judgment,” Wike said.

The former Rivers governor further alleged that Amaechi mismanaged several projects, including Rivers State’s monorail in Port Harcourt and other investments.

“He spent N74 billion on the monorail. Where is the monorail? Our gas turbine, $380 million, he sold it. Where is the money? Which account did he pay it into? He spent $30 million on Kalibu Heart Hospital. Where is the foundation of the hospital?

‘’He took our legacy aircraft to Germany for 12 years with no record. One of our Dash 8 planes, he sold to a friend for 5 billion. Where are these assets today?,’’ Wike asked

The minister, who also spoke on the latest success by security agencies against terrorists,  said Amaechi should pursue his presidential ambition if he had any.

Wike said: “He (Amaechi) knows he won’t get the ticket. I read that he said he knows the weaknesses of the President, so he knows how to defeat him, but he also knew the weaknesses of the President in 2022 when the President defeated him mercilessly in the primary.

“Nigerians know the last person they will give a ticket to because they know it (Amaechi’s bid) is dead on arrival.”

On the wider political landscape, Wike dismissed suggestions that the opposition coalition poses a serious threat to Tinubu ahead of the 2027 elections.

Citing the merger of the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC), the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) and some members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), which led to the formation of the  APC  in 2014, Wike said a coalition happens only when two or more political parties come together to form a new one.

“There’s no coalition. What is a coalition? You can talk about a coalition when CPC and AC, and some PDP members, went to form another party, which you can call a coalition,” he said.

According to him, the outcome of the recently conducted by-elections in 13 states across the country shows that  Nigerians are not looking up to the ADC.

“From what happened in the by-election, how can you say Nigerians are looking up to them (ADC)?”

Asked if that was why he urged Nigerians not to vote for the ADC in the forthcoming election, the minister replied: Yes,  because they have nothing to show.”

Wike said it was not enough for coalition members, who have held elective positions previously, to tell Nigerians, ‘I will do this’ without showing their track records.

The minister stated that, among the current politicians in the ADC, there is none he did not invite to Rivers State to inaugurate projects when he was governor.

Wike said that the outcome of the by-election gave a very loud message that the  ADC is not gaining any traction.

His words: “From what happened during the by-elections, it will be wrong to say Nigerians are looking up to the ADC.

“Who are those there that Nigerians will be looking up to? These are people who have had countless opportunities in life to change, yet they couldn’t.

“There’s no coalition. When CPC, CAN, and some PDP members came together and formed another party, which was a coalition.

“But when people say they have left their party to join another party, that cannot be a coalition.

“If you look at their track records, they’ve always been moving from one party to the other because they have nothing to show. Nigerians have already rejected them with the results of the by-elections.  They didn’t make any impact.

“It is easy for you to appear in the national newspapers and on television to talk, but the reality has shown that they are not in tune with Nigerians.”

The FCT Minister, who also denied planning a parallel PDP convention, said he was not aware of any National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting to be held in Ibadan, Oyo State.

He insisted that power must remain in the South till 2031, adding he will support any candidate who will impact the country and its people in the 2027 presidential election.

On security, the minister argued that the Tinubu administration deserved commendation for its recent feat against terrorism.

He added that it was a welcome development that the United States and the United Kingdom have praised security agencies for their good work.

His words: “For some time now, look at the steps the government has been taking. For the first time, look at the United States and the United Kingdom commended the Nigerian government.

“Terrorists have been looking for years to destroy our efforts, but our security agencies were able to penetrate them. And America and the UK commended us more than anything.”

The minister acknowledged that Nigerians are enduring tough times due to reforms such as fuel subsidy removal, but maintained that the sacrifices are necessary.

According to him, while petrol prices initially surged after subsidy removal, they have “started coming down a bit,” showing signs of market adjustment.

He stressed that both rural and urban residents are affected by the state of the economy, dismissing claims that only people in villages bear the brunt of hardship.

“You cannot say only those living in rural areas are suffering. Those in the city also feel the pain when the economy is bad. Every Nigerian is entitled to have a good living,” Wike said.

Why Babachir Lawal is attacking Tinubu – Wike

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike on Tuesday explained why former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Babachir Lawal is attacking President Bola Tinubu.

Wike said Lawal, expressed anger after President Bola Ahmed Tinubu picked Kashim Shettima as his running mate in 2023.

The Minister who spoke as a guest on Tuesday’s edition of Channels Television Politics Today programme, monitored by our correspondent, defended Tinubu against claims that his administration is unapproachable, stressing that the President cannot personally attend to everyone.

He maintained governance involves teamwork and Nigerians should engage Ministers and presidential Special Advisers rather than expect direct access to the President.

Wike said Lawal visited him in his Port Harcourt residence shortly after the announcement was made.

According to him, Lawal was visibly upset because he had expected Tinubu to choose him as vice president.

“After President Tinubu chose Shettima as his VP, Babachir Lawal came to my house in Port Harcourt. He was angry because he thought the president would pick him as vice president,” Wike said.

The revelation comes days after Lawal, in a separate appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today, claimed he would not have lasted in Tinubu’s cabinet had he been appointed.

Lawal, a strong critic of the administration, further argued that President Tinubu did not win the 2023 election, insisting that the results available to him at the time showed otherwise.

When asked if the government was approachable, Wike responded: “Of course.”

His remarks followed a recent comment by Babachir Lawal, a former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), who had described Tinubu and his administration as unapproachable.

“When you say Mr President is unapproachable, and the government is unapproachable, what do you call a government?” Wike asked.

“I am the Minister in charge of the Federal Capital Territory, Mr Z is a Minister in charge of Interior, Mrs O is a Minister in charge of Trade, Investment and Industry. Must everybody reach Mr President? Is that the way the government runs?

“If everybody in this country refuses to reach out to ministers or special advisers and just wants to see Mr President, how many people can he attend to at a time? I am a minister, if you have a problem regarding the activities in the FCT, have you tried to reach out to the FCT minister?” he asked.

Wike argued that the government deserves commendation for recent successes in the fight against terrorism.

He disclosed that foreign governments such as the United States and United Kingdom have praised Nigeria’s security agencies for their operations.

“For some time now, look at the steps the government has been taking. For the first time, look at the United States, United Kingdom commending the Nigerian government.

“Terrorists have been looking for years to destroy our efforts but our security agencies were able to penetrate them. And America and the UK commended us more than anything,” Wike said.

He stressed rural and urban residents are affected by the state of the economy, dismissing claims that only people in villages bear the brunt of hardship.

“You cannot say only those living in rural areas are suffering. Those in the city also feel the pain when the economy is bad. Every Nigerian is entitled to have a good living,” he said.

Wike also responded to opposition voices, including his longtime political rival and former Rivers Governor, Rotimi Amaechi, who has criticised Tinubu’s administration.

He accused Amaechi of lacking the moral authority to speak on corruption, citing unresolved issues from his time as governor.

According to him: “A man comes to tell you he will solve the issue of corruption in one month. But this same man closed down the State High Court for almost two years. Can such a man really fight corruption?”

The Minister referenced judicial inquiries which he said indicted Amaechi.

“He was really indicted. He went to court. The court said, yes, the panel was right. He went to the Court of Appeal. The Court of Appeal said the panel was right. He went to the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court affirmed the judgment,” he said.

The former Rivers gyovernor further alleged that Amaechi mismanaged several projects, including the state’s monorail and other investments, while questioning the transparency of certain financial dealings under his administration.

“Our gas provider, 380 million US dollars, he sold it to the Sahara. Where is the money? Which account did he pay to? He spent 30 million US dollars on Kalibu Heart Hospital. Where is the foundation of the hospital? He spent N74 billion on the monorail. Where is the monorail?” Wike stated.

The Minister said the presidential ambition of Rotimi Amaechi is dead on arrival.

Wike said Nigerians won’t give Amaechi a chance in the 2027 election.

Amaechi, a member of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) opposition coalition determined to wrest power from President Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 poll, came second after in the 2022 APC presidential primary won by ex-Lagos governor Tinubu.

In 2025, Amaechi dumped the APC and moved to the ADC, seeking the party’s 2027 presidential ticket.

However, Wike, who incidentally shared a common history with Amaechi as former Rivers Governor, said his predecessor won’t get the ADC ticket for the 2027 poll.

The FCT minister said: “He (Amaechi) knows he won’t get the ticket. I read that he said he knows the weaknesses of the President, so he knows how to defeat him but he also knew the weaknesses of the President in 2022 when the president defeated him mercilessly in the primary.

…Wike commissions N50bn rehabilitated lower Usuma Dam Phase 2

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, on Tuesday vowed that no amount of intimidation or blackmail would derail his focus on delivering the dividends of democracy.

Wike said the right thing will continue to prevail as long as he remains the minister of FCT.

The Minister disclosed this while commissioning the newly rehabilitated Phase 2 of the Lower Usuma Dam Water Treatment Plant in the Bwari area council.

Wike’s statement was a response to reports alleging that the FCT administration was indebted to local contractors to the tune of N5 billion.

The minister said, “Let me use this opportunity to tell people that no amount of blackmail will stop us from being focused. I will never be intimidated. You see, the problem in this country is that when you want to fight corruption, corruption will fight you back, and it’s corruption that is fighting back. We are going to defeat corruption”.

He denied knowledge of the contracts in question, laying the blame squarely on civil servants who he alleged to have awarded contracts without ministerial approval, adding that, “Civil servants stay in their offices and award contracts worth 15 million, 10 million, 20 million without the minister knowing.

“And then you hear, ministers, sitting in the office, and people will tell you that you are owing 15 billion Naira, when you don’t know when it was awarded, certainly it will not happen! Let heaven come down”.

He challenged the contractors to provide proof, questioning their legitimacy.

Wike went further that: “Let anybody who said I awarded a contract bring the documents.

“Let them show me the job that they are commissioning. If you look at their faces, you will know that those who awarded the contracts to themselves are bringing those people to come”.

He outlined his administration’s strategy of prioritising major capital projects, contrasting the alleged “small, small” contracts of the past.

Wike further revealed that he had shifted the budget allocation to 70 percent for capital expenditure and 30 percent for recurrent, a reversal of previous trends.

He said, “Every day, some people want to buy computers, every budget you will see all kinds of things. Some people will say, I want to travel to the U.S. about land administration. You want to learn land administration; do you go to the U.S.? I mean, there’s no nexus”.

The minister pointed to the increased Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) of the FCT, from N9 billion to over N30 billion monthly, as the engine funding current projects, vowing to continue his development drive until 2027.

Speaking on the water project, Wike revealed that the Phase 2 rehabilitation was awarded in 2022 for approximately N50 billion and completed under President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope agenda.

“This Phase Two is very important because it increases the carrying capacity, and of course, will improve water supply to the residents of Abuja,” he said.

He also announced that the Federal Executive Council had already approved the rehabilitation of Phases 1, 3, and 4.

Furthermore, he confirmed the flag-off of a N90 billion project to provide water to satellite towns, starting with Bwari on Wednesday and Karu on Thursday.

“All this is geared to make life easier for the people of the FCT. We are not concentrating on the development of the city; we are taking development to the satellite towns,” he said.

The project, Wike noted, will significantly expand the dam’s carrying capacity and boost water supply to Abuja residents.

“Some people have accused us of concentrating only on roads, but beyond roads, we are also focusing on basic infrastructure like water supply. Water is life, and this administration is committed to ensuring residents enjoy this essential service,” Wike stated.

He added that agreements signed with China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC) during President Tinubu’s visit to China in 2023 are also geared towards ensuring satellite towns benefit from a reliable water supply.

Wike also highlighted the administration’s achievements in education, noting that many schools have been completed, renovated, or are currently undergoing construction across the FCT.

He directed the Secretary of Education to make public the comprehensive list of completed and ongoing school projects and to take the media on inspection tours of rural schools to showcase the government’s commitment.

“This administration is not only developing the city Centre but is also taking infrastructure to the satellite towns. Our goal is to make life easier for all residents of the FCT,” Wike said.

Also speaking, the FCT Minister of State, Dr. Mariya Mahmoud, commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his unwavering support toward infrastructural renewal and for prioritising critical projects that directly impact the lives of ordinary citizens.

She urged residents to rededicate themselves to the proper management and sustainability of the water treatment plant, ensuring that generations yet unborn will continue to benefit from this vital infrastructure.

The Commissioner, IGP Monitoring Team in Abuja, Akin Fakorede, has been accused of disregarding directives of the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, and Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, over the ownership dispute at River Park Estate.

Fakorede allegedly issued a letter asserting ownership claims in favour of Paulo Homes Nigeria Limited, a move seen as preempting the work of the ministerial committee recently inaugurated by Wike to investigate the matter.

The IGP, in July, ordered a reopening of investigations into the long-standing dispute following a meeting with the parties involved at the Force Headquarters on July 2.

During the meeting, the IGP clarified that the police do not have the mandate to adjudicate land disputes or company ownership, which remain under the courts.

According to findings, the Special Investigation Panel (SIP) had submitted a report providing an evidence for the case, which allegedly contradicted the conclusions earlier reached by Fakorede’s unit.

In a letter with reference Ref: IGP MONITORING UNIT/ABJ/VOL.79/25, dated August 7, and addressed to the Director of Land Administration, Fakorede directed that dealings on River Park Estate should be channelled to Paulo Homes Nigeria Limited.

The letter was also copied to the Director of Abuja Geographic Information System (AGIS),  Director of Development Control, and the company’s owner, Dr. Sampson Uche Odili.

According to sources, the letter by the CP was written days after the inauguration of the ministerial committee, raising concerns that it could undermine the panel’s work despite warnings from Wike that the committee should insulate itself from vested interests.

The development also comes amid a review of the dispute by the Attorney-General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi, said to have directed the police to suspend actions on the matter until the review was concluded.

The ministerial committee is expected to start work soon, with stakeholders monitoring its activities.

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, on Friday expressed displeasure over how some people have converted residential buildings into commercial buildings without prior approval from government.

Wike explained that the Certificate of Occupancy (C of O) always indicates the purpose for usage, which could be for commercial, residential or other uses, in line with the provisions of the Abuja Master Plan.

In order to effect positive change, the minister has inaugurated two committees to address the land issues at River Park Estates and abuse of the Land Use Act in the nation’s capital.

While inaugurating the committees, Wike said the issues are important to restructure the activities of the FCT Administration on emerging land matters.

He said: “Today you find out that all those provisions were being violated without prior approval from the government. You will see people with C of O, whose purpose is for residential, but turned to commercial. This, of course, is a violation of the certificate that was issued”.

Wike said the River Park Committee would be chaired by the General Counsel/Secretary, Legal Service Secretariat, Barrister Salman Dako and acting Director, Public Service as secretary.

He pointed out that sometimes the government gives out letters of intent to those who declare interest to develop mass housing.

According to him, the FCT Administration always signs MoUs with estate developers, adding, however, that in most cases, the clauses in the agreements end up being violated.

River Park Estate committee, Wike said, was inaugurated to look into the land issues in the estate and advise the FCTA on the necessary steps needed to correct the glitches.

He gave the committee two weeks ultimatum to conclude the assignment, and warned that there would be no extension of time.

“So, if it requires you to sit from morning till night, may it be so. We will not delay,” he said.

Wike advised the committee to carry out the task with utmost professionalism and warned the members against giving in to internal or external influence.

He said: “If I hear that somebody has interest, be it from outside or be it from the FCTA, particularly Abuja Geographic Information System (AGIS) and the administration department, you know the consequences of it.

“If there’s any department that’s trying to stop you from getting information, let me know on time”.

The second committee was on the review of land uses/purpose clauses of land and properties at locations overtaken by commercial and other activities.

It will be chaired by the Director, Development Control, with Director, Urban and Regional Planning as Secretary.

The minister explained that the committee would identify all those areas that were in violation of the use of the C of O given to residents, as the case may be.

He said that the area could be in the Central Business Area, Maitama, Asokoro, Garki, Wuse I, or Wuse II, as the case may be.

Wike said: “Having identified them, you have to recommend to the government what appropriate steps to be taken in compliance with extant guidelines.

“This is very, very important to us. Are you going to say outright revocation for not complying with the provisions in the C of O or there would be a penalty if they asked for conversion and pay the appropriate fee?

“The committee has two weeks to deliver on the task and come up with a robust recommendation of what the government is to do.

“Like I said earlier, this job has to be done without outside or inside interference”.

Wike said that the move was necessary for the public to know what the government was doing to address the anomalies in land use in FCT.

Other members of the River Park Estate committee include Senior Special Assistant to the FCT Minister on Lands, Urban and Regional Planning and Deputy Director, Land; Director, Security Services Department, Director Development Control, and Director, AGIS.
