Wike supports Abuja famers with 50% fertilizer subsidy

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has flagged off the distribution and sale of fertilizers at 50 percent subsidized rates to farmers across the six Area Councils of the territory.

The event, held at the Arts and Culture Exhibition Pavilion in Garki, Abuja, marks a key intervention by the FCT administration to boost food production, stabilize prices and strengthen food security amid rising global costs of agricultural inputs.

Wike said at a ceremony the administration procured 550 metric tonnes of assorted fertilizers, including conventional NPK, granular urea, NPK gel and urea gel fertilizers, for onward distribution to verified farmers.

“This initiative is a cornerstone of our commitment to food security and agricultural revitalization. It comes at the peak of the farming season when our farmers need support the most. With these inputs, we aim not only to boost yields but also to cushion the effects of rising food costs on households’, he said.

Wike stressed that transparency and accountability mechanisms had been put in place to ensure the fertilizers reach genuine farmers rather than being diverted to the open market.

He also appealed to beneficiaries to put the inputs to proper use.

“To whom much is given, much is expected. I passionately appeal to our farmers not to sell these fertilizers but to use them to cultivate their lands and feed their families and the FCT at large”, he said.

The minister urged FCT youth to embrace farming, noting that Abuja is blessed with vast arable land.

“Instead of waiting endlessly for white-collar jobs, our young people should go into agriculture. It is time to return to the farms and produce what we eat,” he urged.

Wike noted ongoing collaborations with international and local partners, including the Japan International Cooperation Agency JICA, the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture IITA, the Food and Agriculture Organization FAO, the Leventis Foundation, and the World Bank through its ACReSAL Project.

These, he said, have contributed significantly to farmer training, capacity building, and reclamation of degraded land.

He also pointed to the Islamic Development Bank’s SAP-Z programme and the FCT CARES project as initiatives complementing government efforts to build a sustainable agricultural sector.

Reaffirming the Tinubu administration’s commitment, Wike assured residents of continued support.

“Our ultimate goal is to build a prosperous, secure, and inclusive city that every Nigerian is proud to call home. Improved security in the FCT has already restored confidence and created a safer environment for agriculture to thrive,” he said.

Earlier, Mandate Secretary, Agriculture and Rural Development Secretariat, Comrade Abdullahi Suleiman Ango, disclosed that in addition to fertilizers, 3,500 knapsack sprayers had also been procured for distribution.

He explained that only certified farmers were selected to benefit from the intervention, with strict monitoring measures put in place to prevent diversion.

“The importance of agriculture cannot be overstated. With a fast-growing population, investing in agriculture is our surest path to self-sufficiency, job creation, and food security”, he said.

He pledged the Secretariat’s continued alignment with President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda and Wike’s leadership in repositioning the FCT agricultural sector.

Stakeholders and farmers who attended the event expressed optimism that the intervention would help reduce production costs and translate into affordable food prices in the territory.

He promised his unalloyed support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his services to the country.

Nwachukwu also promised his support for Wike’s activities and praised the President for his achievements.

He lauded the President’s visionary leadership and dedication to the welfare of Nigerians, noting that his leadership has brought hope and renewed optimism to the country.

…says rehabilitation of more roads coming

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has flagged off the emergency reconstruction of the Karu road from the Karu interchange to Customs Clinic Junction (Karu site) within the Abuja Municipal Area Council of the FCT.

Speaking during the flag-off ceremony on Wednesday, Wike explained that while the flagship project is the reconstruction of the Karu road, the scope of work has been expanded to include the rehabilitation of additional critical roads in Karu satellite town.

The Minister acknowledged the persistent advocacy of stakeholders for the road projects, specifically commending the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC) Chairman, Christopher Maiakalangu, for his relentless efforts in championing the needs of the Karu people.

He stressed that the chairman’s relationship with the government has made the Karu road projects possible.

Wike also acknowledged the support of former Senator representing the FCT, Philip Aduda, whose intervention, he said, led to the inclusion of the additional feeder roads in the project and urged FCT residents to continue to support those who have their interests at heart.

The Minister said, “That is why I would always want you to support those that can go to the government and say, look, my area is bad and the government will listen to them. Do you know there are some people you would elect, they cannot talk to the government? There are people you elect, they have the audience of the government.

“And that’s why the chairman of AMAC, Maikalangu, has always been on my neck. He has always told me, sir, even though you have done Nyanya to Karshi, it will be unfair as the Chairman of AMAC, this Karu road has been of very serious concern to us. Do me that favor and see whether you can, under emergency, reconstruct and dualize this Karu road.

“Because he’s been a young man who has been very supportive of the Renewed Hope Agenda, I felt that it would be better to encourage him, to listen to him. And so we are here today. If I were you, I would continue to support him because it means that he has the people of Karu at heart. It means that he has the problem of AMAC at heart.

“Also. one of your sons who is no longer in government…Senator Tanimu Aduda, has been somebody that believes in the people of Abuja. I saw him last night. He came to me, and he said, Sir, this is an opportunity now. Now you are doing this Karu dualization, there are some other small roads; if you join them, it will open the whole of Karu.

“And so, because I know he means well for his people. I know that he talks well about his people, I conceded to him. And so, the people of Karu, this is your turn and we’ll make sure you get the benefits you are entitled to.

“And so, we have added these other roads to this road we are doing now. One, we are going to rebuild Customs Clinic Juncture to CBN Quarters junction. We are going to rebuild immediately Customs Clinic Junction to EFFC. We are also going to rebuild the NIA Quarters Road, we are going to rebuild Primus hospital road”, the Minister stated.

Wike expressed confidence in the contractor, Messers Abdul Val Nigeria Limited, adding that their successful completion of a similar 16-kilometer dual carriage project in Ushafa, in Bwari Area Council within a 10-month timeline was commendable.

He urged the contractor to ensure that all the newly added roads are completed within 10 months as well, promising the community that the project would not only involve road reconstruction but also the installation of streetlights to improve the business environment.

The Minister who reiterated that the provision of basic infrastructure in FCT satellite towns was a critical component of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Adenda, said the ongoing expansion of water supply projects and provision of rural roads in the satellite towns fulfils the promises made by the President to bring infrastructure development closer to the rural people.

He further called on residents to continue to hold elected officials accountable for their campaign promises.

FCT Minister of State, Mariya Mahmoud, commended President Tinubu, noting that his Renewed Hope Agenda continues to produce impactful, life-changing projects for the benefit of all Nigerians.

She praised the FCT Minister for his dedication and leadership.

Providing an overview of the Karu road project, the Coordinator, Satellite Towns Development Department, Abdulkadir Zulkiflu, said the scope of work includes the construction of a 5.4-kilometer length of roads and provision of other necessary engineering infrastructure, including the installation of solar-powered street lights, adding that the project would be delivered within 10 months.

He stated that the current FCT Administration has taken cognizance of the need to provide unhindered access to the newly-rehabilitated Nyanya-Karshi Road, noting that the project will enhance free traffic flow along the Nyanya-Karshi axis of the FCT.

In his note of commitment, the Managing Director of Abdul Val Nigeria Ltd., the project’s contractor, Mr. Suleman Abdul, expressed his gratitude to the Minister for awarding the project to his company.

He assured that the company would deliver a high-standard job within the stipulated time frame.

Wike camp gives conditions for PDP convention to hold

A cloud of uncertainty is hovering over the proposed National Convention of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) due to a lack of agreement on resolving contentious pre-convention issues among the warring factions within the party.

The elective convention is scheduled for Ibadan, the Oyo State capital,  on November 15.

To achieve a hitch-free, valid and successful convention, the camp of Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike has listed six conditions that should be met by the party’s national leadership.

But the National Chairman,  Ambassador Umar Damagum,  PDP Governors Forum Chairman Bala Mohammed and Board of Trustees (BoT) Secretary Ahmed Makarfi said nothing can stop the convention.

Members of Wike’s group, who met on Monday night at the minister’s official residence in Abuja, warned that failure to meet the demands would “render the proposed convention invalid, as legitimate members of the party would be disenfranchised.”

At the ‘Eminent Persons and Stakeholders of PDP meeting’ were Wike, PDP National Secretary Senator Samuel Anyanwu, former Ekiti State Governor Ayodele Fayose, former Enugu State Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, former Abia State Governor Okezie Ikpeazu and former Benue State Governor Samuel Ortom.

The meeting was also attended by the Speaker of the Rivers House of Assembly, Martins Amaewhule, Senator Phillips Aduda, Senator George Sekibo, Micah Jiba, some serving and former members of the National Assembly, as well as some state chairmen and some  BoT members.

A communique read by Ortom listed the demands as follows:

    • Fresh congresses to be held in Ebonyi and Anambra states in strict compliance with subsisting court judgments;

    • A new Southeast Zonal Congress must be urgently conducted.

    • The outcome of the Southsouth Congress in Calabar, already upheld by the courts, must be respected;

    • PDP should immediately conduct the Ekiti local government congresses in line with judicial pronouncements;

    • There should be no micro-zoning of offices, beyond the general zoning formula already adopted by the National Executive Committee (NEC) to maintain peace and stability;   and

    • The national chairmanship position must remain in the Northcentral, consistent with the zoning arrangement of the 2021 convention.

In a veiled reference to the threats from the Wike camp,  Governor  Mohammed said the PDP is not afraid of anyone.

He said: “We are not cowards and we are not afraid of any person. We can’t keep quiet and allow people to continue to take us to the slaughterhouse or take us for granted:  enough is enough.

“We agree to consensus and accommodation, but that is not cowardice.

“If anybody wants to form a faction of fools, we will allow him.”

The governor spoke after the inauguration of the Adamawa State Governor Ahmadu Fintiri-led convention committee by National Chairman Iliya Damgum.

Damagum said the preparations for the convention would go on unaltered, based on the resolutions of the last NEC meeting.

With Damagum were   Fintiri, Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde,   Governor   Mohammed, Deputy Governors of Enugu and Osun states, and BoT Secretary Ahmed Makarfi.

Anyanwu and Ortom, who were at the meeting of the Wike camp, were also present.

Ortom: PDP should respect rule or law

Ortom said PDP cannot conduct a peaceful convention when court judgments that could foster inclusion are not obeyed.

He believes a credible National Convention should be anchored on transparency, fairness, respect for the rule of law and inclusivity.

Ortom said: “We, the Eminent Leaders and Concerned Stakeholders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), having met to review the state of our great party and assessed the critical issues leading to the forthcoming National Convention, do hereby express our collective commitment to the principles of equity, justice, inclusivity, and the rule of law – values upon which the PDP was founded and upon which its survival depends.

“In the spirit of unity and progress, and mindful of the party’s historical role as a custodian of Nigeria’s democratic aspirations, we considered it imperative and expedient to make the following observations and convey our demands to the party leadership and the National Working Committee (NWC) as we prepare for the National Convention.

“PDP stands at a defining crossroads where its ability to reconcile internal disputes, uphold fairness, and respect constitutional processes will determine its future relevance.

“Unity cannot be built on disenfranchisement, exclusion, or the neglect of valid judicial pronouncements.”

    Hurdles before PDP, by Wike

Before the meeting, Wike, who had spoken on the preparations for the convention on a television station programme , said: “The issue of the national convention is not the problem; the issue is the problem leading to the convention, and people should understand that.

“If they are not well taken care of, there is a likelihood that the convention will not hold.”

Wike also said the choice of venue was not in dispute, insisting that the party must resolve its internal issues before convening.

He stressed: “The venue is not the subject matter, the subject matter is: ‘Have you done what you were supposed to do before holding that convention? If not, it may be a setback.”

    Damagum decries ‘destructive voices’

Damagum lamented that those tearing apart the PDP are its major beneficiaries.

He said the recent by-elections across the country, as well as the local government elections in Port Harcourt, speak eloquently about the challenges confronting the PDP.

He said: “Ironically, many of the destructive voices have come from individuals who have benefited immensely from the PDP. They sought to sow division and weaken our structures.

“Yet, history will record, and analysts will debate, but the consensus will remain that in a time of great difficulty, this National Working Committee, under my leadership, held the line and did a remarkable job.

“We must recognise that the challenges we face as the leading opposition are mutating, much to the dismay of well-meaning Nigerians; while the faction that broke out has not garnered much traction, we know that politics is dynamic, and the ruling class may seek to capitalize on or even sponsor such distractions to weaken the PDP, which remains the only dominant opposition party in our dear country, Nigeria.”

The PDP’s Deputy National Chairman (South), Alhaji Taofeek Arapaja, pointed out that “PDP belongs to the people and not to any individual.

“No matter what some people do, insha Allah, we are heading for Aso Rock in 2027,” he said.

    Markafi: PDP for majority involvement

Makarfi, in a veiled reaction to the threats by the Wike group, said that while efforts are being made to rally all stakeholders, success can still be recorded without 100 percent involvement of members in the convention.

He said zoning and micro-zoning had been agreed upon, adding that those raising objections are free to contest for the positions.

Makarfi said: “Convention is not about excluding anybody. It’s also not a denial of the majority to have their way, because that’s what democracy is all about.

“Convention is not about attaining 100%, but about involving an overwhelming majority, and if you have 100 percent, it’s fine.

“In that direction, the party has zoned its positions to the North and South. Either of them can sit and do what they wish, but that should not deny opportunities for any individual who disagrees by testing their will – just buy the form, go to the field and test your capacity.

“So, there’s no need for raising temperature, because there will be no exclusion; that has been the tradition since PDP was formed, we must always strive to build consensus.”

Wike offers immediate employment to children of late FCT HoS

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Minister, Nyesom Wike, on Tuesday condoled the family of the late Head of the Civil Service of the FCT, Mrs Grace Adayilo, who died in the early hours of Monday.

Wike promised immediate employment for the children of Adayilo, who may be unemployed, adding that the FCT Administration will also bear the cost of the burial expenses.

The Minister, who paid a condolence visit to the family, in company of other senior officials of the FCT described her death as “painful” and “unfortunate”.

He said the late Adayilo was committed and full of life.

Until her death, Adayilo served as the first female and first indigenous Head of the FCT Civil Service, appointed by President Bola Tinubu in October 2024.

Prior to her appointment as HoS, she served as Permanent Secretary of the Agriculture and Rural Development Secretariat of the FCT.

Speaking during his condolence visit, Wike hailed her dedication to service, adding that although she was a civil servant she would have made a good politician, adding that when he gave her assignments, he usually had no cause to worry.

“Throughout the time I started working with her, I’ve had no cause for complaint. And she’s full of life. Give her an assignment, you will not complain, there will be no excuses.

“It’s so painful. But I do know that she has done her work. Her creator has called her back. And I do know she will rest in the bosom of the Lord.

“She’s been a preacher. She’s been a true Christian, committed and devoted to community service. A woman you can depend on. Yes, she was a civil servant, but there are some political traits in her as a great humanizer,” he said.

“So, I don’t know whether they are working. If they are, they are working. If they are not working, we will take that responsibility immediately. And every of the burial expenses, the FCT will take care of it. Money cannot replace, but there’s nothing we can do,” Wike stated.

He encouraged members of her family to take heart and believe in God as she did, while praying that God grants her soul eternal rest.

Wike also prayed that her children and dependents will not experience such tragedies.

The late Head of Service is survived by four children Victor, Godwin, Silas and Favour Adayilo.

Wike, others give condition for peaceful PDP national convention

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, some eminent leaders and concerned stakeholders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have said for the party to hold a peaceful national convention in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, leadership positions must remain open, inclusive and competitive.

The party, they said, should also ensure regional equity in accordance with the PDP’s long-standing traditions.

The conditions were given after a closed-door meeting in Abuja on Monday night.

They presented the conditions in a communique at the end of the meeting which started by 8:45pm and ended Tuesday morning.

The communique read by the former Benue Governor Samuel Ortom gave conditions that must be met to prevent the upcoming national convention from being invalidated because; “legitimate members of the party would be disenfranchised.”

According to the communique, the group observed “PDP stands at a defining crossroads where its ability to reconcile internal disputes, uphold fairness, and respect constitutional processes will determine its future relevance.

“That unity cannot be built on disenfranchisement, exclusion, or the neglect of valid judicial pronouncements.

“That a credible National Convention must be anchored on transparency, fairness, and respect for the rule of law as well as inclusivity.”

The PDP group called on the National Working Committee (NWC) to urgently conduct fresh, transparent and inclusive congresses in Ebonyi and Anambra States in line with the judgments of the courts.

“That a fresh and legitimate South-East Zonal Congress should be conducted.

“That the outcome of the valid and legitimate South-South Congress held in Calabar, Cross River State and recognized by the court be respected.

“That the Ekiti State Local Government Areas Congress should be conducted immediately, in obedience to the subsisting court judgement.

“That on zoning of party offices, whereas; we agree with the zoning committee’s recommendations, which was adopted by NEC that status quo remains, we further, and very strongly hold that there should be no form of micro-zoning for peace and stability within the party.

“Consequently, the National Chairman of the party should remain in the North-Central in line with the zoning formula of the 2021 convention,” it said.

The group warned that failure to “comply with the above resolutions and demands shall render any purported national convention invalid, as legitimate members of the party would be disenfranchised.

“The PDP was built on the foundation of inclusivity, fairness, and justice. Therefore, to reclaim its pride of place as the leading opposition and the true alternative for Nigerians, the party must now rise above narrow interests and embrace collective responsibility.

“We, the Eminent Leaders and Concerned Stakeholders, remain steadfast in our loyalty to the party and resolute in our determination to work with all organs and leaders of the PDP to ensure that the forthcoming National Convention becomes a watershed moment — a moment where unity triumphs over division, and justice prevails over impunity.

“Only then can the PDP speak with one voice, act with one heart, and march with renewed strength toward victory,” they demanded.

Others present include former Abia Governor, Okezie Ikpeazu; former Enugu Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi; former Ekiti Governor Ayodele Fayose; former Senator representing Rivers East, George Sekibo; Rivers Speaker; Senator Philip Tanimu Aduda, Hon Micah Jiba, some BoT members of the PDP, as well as other zonal and state party chairmen.

  • Obi’s return to run in 2027 will kill PDP, says Wike

Obi’s return to run in 2027 will kill PDP, says Wike

    • A comeback by him ‘can’t happen’
    • Be wary of hypocrites, minister cautions Jonathan

There is no room for former Governor Peter Obi’s return to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike said yesterday.

According to him, those wooing the 2023 Labour Party (LP) Presidential candidate to run for President in 2027 on the ticket of the PDP are plotting the death of the opposition party.

Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, is the loudest voice among those canvassing Obi’s return, following zoning of the party’s ticket to the South.

The idea was first broached by one-time Information Minister, Prof. Jerry Gana.

Former President, Goodluck Jonathan, is also being lured with the party’s 2027 presidential ticket by some PDP leaders like former Jigawa State Governor, Sule Lamido, and Governor Mohammed.

But Wike, speaking on a television interview session, said: “Bring Obi to where? You want to kill the party even more? Obi was the one abusing the PDP, calling it rotten. Now, the same party is good enough for him to pursue his ambition?

“Ambition can even make people go to Satan’s house. If you want to destroy this party, dare it. Let Obi come, there is nowhere he will go.”

Wike spoke in reference to Obi, who was running mate on the PDP ticket to Atiku Abubakar in the 2019 presidential election but dumped the party thereafter to run on LP ticket in 2023.

Obi was governor of Anambra State on the platform of All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), the party he pledged never to desert. But he joined the PDP to pursue his ambition of going to the federal level.

Wike also advised former President Jonathan to be wary of deceivers, who are luring him into the race.

Urging him to learn from the past, the former governor of Rivers State recalled that those advising Jonathan to run were the same people that truncated his re-election bid in 2015.

Jonathan, who succeeded the late President Umaru Yar’Adua in 2009, was elected in 2011. But he has not played any marginal role in the party since his exit from power in 2015.

    Obi lacks character, says minister

Wike insisted that Obi’s retracing of steps to the party would herald self-destruction for the opposition party.

The minister accused the PDP of failing to learn from the “political suicide” that led to its defeat in the 2023 general election.

He attributed the electoral loss to the neglect of zoning and equity, recalling that he and other leaders had drawn attention to the danger of allowing a bloc zone to produce the national chairman and the presidential candidate at the same time.

He said: “From day one, I told my colleagues, ‘PDP, you are shooting yourself. If you allow what is going on to continue, you’ll pay. You cannot have the presidential candidate at the same time as the national chairman from the same zone.”

The FCT minister accused the party leadership of arrogantly disregarding the calls for balance, which led to the party’s electoral downfall.

Speaking on the 2023 race, he said: “It is better now that you have stolen the presidential ticket, and again stole the national chairman. I said it will purge you. And it really purged them. I have no regret for it.”

Wike said since Obi had publicly condemned the PDP, he should forfeit the opportunity to return.

The minister insisted that such a move, driven by mere political ambition, would obliterate the party’s remaining credibility and ideological foundation.

Wike maintained that the only viable path for the PDP to regain national prominence is strict adherence to the principles of rotation, equity, and justice, and by ensuring that the presidency returns to the South.

He said Obi lacks character, adding that he can never be trusted.

Wike also said Obi’s statement that he would only rule for four years, if elected, is a ruse.

    ‘Jonathan is being deceived’

Wike, who served under Jonathan as Minister of State for Education, said those advising him to run for the president are deceiving him.

He urged him to be sensitive to the antics of hawks, who are trying to mislead him.

Wike said Jonathan should not allow himself to be used by politicians, who deceived him in the past.

He said: “I know Jonathan well. He has international respect and should maintain that. These same people weighing Jonathan down are the ones who played him in 2015. They are only trying to cause confusion in the party.”

     ‘I won’t run for president ‘

The minister rejected insinuations that he harbored presidential ambitions ahead of 2027, saying his position had always been clear.

Wike said: “I have integrity, I have character. The person who appointed me is there. We are saying he should run. Then, I will turn around to say I want to run? What kind of thing is that? How will my children even look at me? I will not run for president.”

    ‘Tinubu will be re-elected’

Wike dismissed El-Rufai’s prediction that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu would come third in the 2027 election, describing it as faulty and mathematically inaccurate.

He said El-Rufai “failed in his mathematics” by predicting Tinubu’s third-place finish without identifying who would come first and second.

Wike stressed: “He goofed. He should have completed it since he claimed Tinubu would come third. How did he arrive at who would be third without arriving at who would be first and second?”

The minister, who exuded confidence about the President’s victory, said: “I will put a bet. Tinubu will win this election squarely.”

He also rejected the runoff calculation, saying:  “Which runoff? With who? It is not possible.”

The minister frowned at the country’s political culture, pointing out that candidates, who lose elections, rarely accept defeat without raising allegations against the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

He stressed: “Tell me which election INEC conducted that people didn’t complain about. Is there anybody who has lost an election in this country and has come out to concede, apart from Jonathan? Mention one.”

Wike urged politicians to emulate Jonathan, who conceded defeat in 2015, stressing that Nigerians must stop making excuses after elections.

He added: “We have this spirit of always complaining. I don’t like excuses. What I cannot achieve, I will say it is not possible. But people must also learn to concede for the sake of national interest”.

‘No room for criminals in FCT’

Fielding more questions from the panel of journalists during his monthly ‘Meet the Media’ programme, he also spoke on his assignment at the FCT, Rivers State politics and the local government election held at the weekend in which the APC won 20 of the 23 seats, leaving only three for the PDP.

He said: “Criminals don’t stay where you will locate them; they do not stay in houses where you will identify them. Criminals stay in these places where you cannot locate them.

“We cannot say because of poverty, we should allow you to kill people, to rob them, to kidnap people. That is not allowed.”

The minister berated landowners, who fail to develop their properties, leaving them as hideouts for criminals.

He said: “It has infested the city, and that is why we have told people who claim the land belongs to them: Why are you not developing the land?

“Why are you making it possible for these criminals to come and settle here and cause problems for the city, and then you say the government is not doing anything?” he queried.

Wike, who vowed that illegal settlements would be cleared, added: “We are going to make sure that all illegal occupants anywhere will be thrown out. It is unfortunate, but there is nothing we can do about it because security is key.

“It is paramount because any government that cannot provide security for its citizens has nothing to do.”

The minister insisted that although poverty is a global reality, it is not an excuse for crime.

He stressed: “There has never been a time anybody can say there is no poverty — mention the country; it’s all over the world. Go to China; go to places, there are areas where you will see poverty.

“But that does not give you room to make people uncomfortable, to kidnap people, to rob people, or to kill people. No, we will not allow that,” he said.

On the health sector and resident doctors’ strike threat, the minister frowned at what he described as unrealistic demands and blackmail.

He said: “Every sector believes that everything should be 100 per cent. No government will sit back and say, ‘Look, I don’t want this sector to be functional.’ No. Based on resources, it must be tailored towards one sector as the need arises.”

Wike, who complained that doctors frequently shift demands, said: “Today, the doctors are talking about training and retraining. Tomorrow, allowances are not being paid. Next, hospitals have no facilities.”

Wike also said rather than engage the government constructively, unions often resort to threats.

He said: “You wake up in the morning, and here it is, we have issued the government an ultimatum without even writing to the government. The thing is just blackmail, threats,” he said.

Lamenting financial constraints, he said the FCT wage bill was overstretched.

His added:  “The FCT wage bill is not more than N12 billion a month. And for over 40,000 workers, how do you manage that? What do we get from the Federation Account? Barely N10 billion. So, we fall back on our Internally Generated Revenue (IGR). That is the reality”.

He spoke on poor sanitation and abandoned hospitals, such as Utako General Hospital, saying his administration inherited litigation that stalled projects but had since resolved them.

Wike added: “You were here when I said the Utako issue had just been resolved. The procurement process is going on. And procurement is not a one-day affair. But I told you the number of hospitals we are taking up this year.”

Wike admitted challenges in waste management, blaming them on poorly awarded contracts.

He said: “It would be wrong for you to say Abuja is filthy. Some parts of Abuja are filthy, yes, but not all. I found problems in waste management. Contracts were awarded to people without capacity and or equipment. But now we have got BPP approval, and we will advertise it. Sanitation cannot be handled by political patronage.”

Wike described open grazing as a national security issue requiring careful handling.

  • Wike knocks Atiku, Obi for criticising Rivers LG polls

Wike knocks Atiku, Obi for criticising Rivers LG polls

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has defended the legality of the recently concluded local government elections in Rivers State, declaring that the emergency rule granted constitutional cover for their conduct.

Speaking about the backlash following the polls, Wike said critics of the exercise, particularly former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and former Anambra governor Peter Obi, were ignorant of the law and motivated by political frustration.

The minister, who spoke during a live media chat in Abuja monitored by our correspondents, also explained that the Federal High Court had given Rivers State the legal basis to conduct the elections despite subsisting disputes, stressing that emergency rule provided the President with powers to make regulations for governance in affected states.

“Under emergency rule, certain aspects of the law are suspended to allow government function. The sole administrators act on behalf of the President. Funds are made available in line with Supreme Court pronouncements,” Wike said.

He faulted Atiku for questioning the exercise, arguing that the former vice president was unaware that former President Olusegun Obasanjo had signed amendments on emergency powers in 2004.

“What you don’t know, don’t comment about. This is law, not Customs. Atiku does not have the knowledge,” he charged.

On Obi, Wike mocked the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate for describing the Rivers polls as “rascality.”

“Who can be more rascal than Obi? As governor for eight years, he could only conduct an election two months before leaving office. Doctors were on strike for 13 months under him. He has no moral authority to lecture anyone on democracy,” Wike declared.

On how the alleged alliance between the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the All Progressives Congress (APC) regarding local government elections influenced the outcome, the minister dismissed suggestions that the outcome of the Rivers polls, in which the APC secured significant victories, portends a national trend ahead of 2027.

“Every election has its peculiarity. What is important is that for the first time in our history, no gunshots, no hijacking of ballot boxes, and no kidnapping of returning officers. If there is an alliance between APC and PDP in Rivers, then Nigerians should commend us for achieving peaceful elections,” he stated.

He attributed the PDP’s poor showing in the state to internal crises, particularly tensions between the state and the party’s national leadership. “We advised those who still had confidence to contest. PDP’s problem in Rivers was created by the national body,” he added.

2027: PDP will die if Obi returns – Wike

    … ‘Obi lacks character’

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, on Monday opposed the return of former Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

He cautioned the leadership of PDP over the readmission of Obi, adding that such a decision would amount to an act of self-destruction for the opposition party.

Wike gave the warning while speaking during his monthly live media chat monitored by our correspondents.

He accused the PDP of failing to learn from the “political suicide” that led to its defeat in the 2023 general election.

The minister based his argument on the party’s neglect of the principles of zoning and equity, recounting that he and other leaders had forewarned the party against allowing both its presidential candidate and national chairman to emerge from the same northern region, a structure he condemned as fundamentally unjust.

“From day one, I told my colleagues, ‘PDP, you are shooting yourself. If you allow what is going on to continue, you’ll pay. You cannot have the presidential candidate at the same time as the national chairman of the party,” he said.

The FCT minister accused the party leadership of arrogantly disregarding the calls for balance, a decision he believed directly led to PDP’s electoral downfall.

“It is better now that you have stolen the presidential ticket, and again stolen the national chairman. I said it will purge you. And it really purged them. I have no regret for it,” he said.

Wike questioned the logic of welcoming back a personality who he described as having publicly condemned the PDP.

“To what? Bringing Obi to where? You want to kill the party? Obi, who was abusing the party, saying it is rotten, so the party is now good enough for him? Ambition can make people even go to Satan’s house,” he said.

The minister insisted that such a move, driven by mere political ambition, would obliterate the party’s remaining credibility and ideological foundation.

“If you want to destroy this party, dare it, bring Obi. There is no way he will come back just because of ambition. No more ideology, no longer principle,” he said.

He reaffirmed his long-held stance that the only viable path for the PDP to regain national prominence is a strict adherence to the principles of rotation, equity, and justice, ensuring the presidency returns to the South.

Wike said obi do not have character and can never be trusted.

He said Obi’s decision to rule for four years is deceitful.
