Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) under the auspices of the South-South Physically Challenged Indigenes (SSPCI) have vowed to reconcile the political differences between the Minister of Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Abuja, Chief Nyesom Wike and the suspended Governor of Rivers State, Sir Siminalayi Fubara.

They said they would set up a five-member committee to facilitate reconciliation required to restore democracy in the state.

Speaking in Port Harcourt on Friday, the Executive Chairman, SSPCI Rivers State Chapter, Altraide Etekena lamented that the prolonged crisis had destabilised governance and negatively affected PWDs in the state.

He said that the committee would engage key stakeholders, including the Sole Administrator, Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (rtd), the leadership of the House of Representatives, the Senate, and President Tinubu, to stop any plot to extend the State of Emergency in Rivers.

He insisted that the emergency rule should not exceed the stipulated six-month period.

He said: “We will establish a five-member PWD committee to facilitate reconciliation between Governor Siminalaiye Fubara, his legislative colleagues, and Chief  Nyesom Ezenwo Wike.

“This committee will also engage with Sole Administrator Ibas, the leadership of the House of Representatives, the Senate, and President Tinubu to advocate against the extension of the emergency rule in our dear State.”

Etekena urged Ibas to remain neutral in the peace restoration process and ensure that PWDs were included in his administration as special beneficiaries

He emphasised that the call for inclusivity underscored their commitment to promoting the rights and interests of PWDs in governance.

He, however, expressed their willingness to work with and support the appointment of Ibas, citing his proven track record of excellence in leadership and development.

He said: “We urge Sole Administrator Ibas to ensure that he remains unbiased in his responsibility. And that PWD are included in his protem administration, and are recognized as special beneficiaries.

“We acknowledge President Tinubu’s declaration of a State of Emergency, and the suspension of the Legislature and Executive in Rivers State, provided it does not exceed the stipulated six-month period.

“We urge President Tinubu to undertake a genuine overhaul of the Nigerian judicial system to meet public expectations.

“We call upon the NBA to fulfill its role as a vigilant watchdog of the judicial system and governance. The issues in Rivers State could have been mitigated if the NBA had been proactive rather than focused solely on revenue generation and ill-aggrandizement.

“We have unanimously resolved to work and support the appointment of the sole administrator in achieving presidential mandate as well as fostering peace, harmonious and constitutional relations between the worrying arms of government in Rivers State.

“As a community, we believe in the capabilities of the Sole Administrator Ibas given to his proven track records of excellence in leadership and development. We further support all appointments made by himas they target effective governance during the declared emergency rule.”

Nigeria deserves high standard ICC – Wike

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike has hailed the pace and quality of work on the ongoing renovation of the International Conference Centre (ICC).

Wike said the nation’s capital deserves the best ICC.

The Minister spoke after inspection tour of the facility and N5 road in Life Camp, in the FACT.

Wike, who was grateful to President Bola Tinubu for his vision and commitment to excellence in transforming the ICC into a world class facility, said ICC is the first project that when completed will be inaugurated by the President to mark his second year in office.

He said: “I was thrilled to see the quality of the job, and I believe it’s a testament to what Abuja deserves. This is a prime example of effective leadership. When Mr. President inaugurated the Equal Rights Parliament late last year, the state of the ICC was appalling. No responsible leader would allow such a facility to be called an ICC.

“I informed Mr. President that immediate action was necessary to restore the center to its former glory. That’s what leadership is all about. The International Conference Center was built in 1991, and it’s surprising that no one had attempted to give it a facelift until now.

“Today, it’s been transformed into a world-class facility, thanks to Mr. President’s leadership and support.

“We’re grateful to Mr. President for his vision and commitment to excellence. I’m proud to say that we’ve completed the first project that we handed over to Mr. President for inauguration”.

The Minister also spoke about his recent trip to China as a follow-up visit to support the production of water for the satellite towns.

He said: “We have signed the provision of water to some of the satellite towns, and as I speak to you, Mr. President has also included part of the funding in the national budget, which has been passed. We have also included it in our statutory budget, which has been laid before the National Assembly. We believe that next week, we will be invited for defense. This is a critical project for Mr. President.

“As I mentioned earlier, part of our inauguration this second year is the Abuja city water supply. Part of it will be done along the airport road. But having done that, what about the satellite towns?

“Mr. President said we must also provide water within the satellite towns. So, they are starting with Bwari Karu, and part of Kubwa, and it is now with the Bureau of Public Procurement. The procurement is ongoing, and the company handling it will be CGC, as they are the ones doing the greater Abuja water supply. Things are moving on well, thanks to God. But all this is also because we have strong support from Mr. President.”.

INC backs Wike, Turnah’s collaboration in Bayelsa

The president of the Ijaw National Congress (INC), Prof Benjamin Okaba, has supported the collaboration between the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, and the coordinator of the NEW associates in Bayelsa State, George Turnah.

Okaba asked Turnah to sustain the political union, saying the Ijaw could not afford to put its eggs in one basket.

A statement signed by Turnah’s special assistant on media, Kevin Egbo, said Okaba spoke when Turnah visited him to brief him on the political happenings in Bayelsa.

Okaba commended Turnah for his visit and apologised, describing it as the hallmark of strong leadership.

He, however, urged him to make a similar visit to the Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, for reconciliation for the greater good and unity of the Ijaw nation.

Okaba cautioned against divisive behaviour among the political class, stressing that the calm in the Ijaw nation over the Rivers political debacle was deliberate. It allowed for peace and enabled Fubara to pursue genuine reconciliation with his benefactor and political father, Wike.

In his remarks, Turnah, who is the acting Chairman, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Bayelsa, expressed regret over some recent public comments regarding the office of the INC, which he said were misconstrued in some quarters.

He commended Okaba for his dedicated leadership of the INC and urged for greater support.

He also reiterated that ethnicity had no place in politics and urged the socio-cultural leader of the Ijaw race to find means to address political issues without necessarily involving the revered INC institution, which represents the Ijaw interest and speaks for the Ijaw people.

Turnah also pleaded with Prof Okaba and the INC leadership to initiate robust peace moves to facilitate the restoration of suspended Rivers State Governor, Sim Fubara, and the state’s House of Assembly.

He said only a sincere apology and genuine reconciliation could yield positive results in the current Rivers political crisis.

Wike faults sponsored walkout on First Lady in Rivers

The Minister of Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike,  has condemned Friday’s walkout on the First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, by a group of women loyal to the suspended Governor Siminalayi Fubara.

Wike described it as an embarrassment to the people of Rivers State.

The Minister,  who apologised to the First Lady and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on behalf of the people of Rivers State, said: “Insult on anyone representing the First Lady of Nigeria in an event is a direct insult on the office of the President and Commander-In-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, and as a leader in Rivers State,  I apologize”.

Some women, led by some sacked Local Government Vice Chairmen staged a walkout during the Renewed Hope Initiative empowerment programme organised by the office of the First Lady at the EUI Event Centre in GRA, Port Harcourt, yesterday.

The programme was meant to benefit 500 women in the state with various empowerment items.

According to a statement on Saturday by his Senior Special Assistant (SSA) on Public Communications and Social Media,  Lere Olayinka, the FCT Minister, who is in China for official engagements, described the incident as “very disturbing and embarrassing,” cautioning supporters of the suspended governor to desist from ridiculing the State.

The Minister counselled the suspended Governor to demonstrate honesty by being bold enough to tell President Tinubu, what exactly he wanted, rather than saying something today, and doing another thing tomorrow.

He said: “It is not enough to be visiting people to plead for peace, those who genuinely want peace work and act for it.

“These are the same people pleading for peace, but at the same time doing things that are contrary to what they are pleading for.

“How can you say you want peace and at the same time, you are sponsoring people to insult everyone,  including the President and his wife?

“All those shenanigans won’t bring peace, and I am sure they know that, because they are not sincere with their up and down pleadings for peace.

“As for me and those who subscribe to my leadership, we condemn in totality that yesterday’s show of shame and we apologize to our First Lady for the embarrassing conduct of those few women who do not represent the characters and ideals of the people of Rivers State”.

“It is therefore my prayer that Allah (Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala) in His infinite mercies will grant the deceased Al-firdaus, and give the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss.”

Wike orders crackdown on quack hospitals

The Minister of Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has directed clampdown on unregistered hospital and quack medical personnel operating in the FCT.

Wike said henceforth anyone found to be operating or working in an unregistered health facilities should be arrested and prosecuted.

The FCT Minister gave this directive while reacting to the death of a pregnant woman at Afolmi Hospital, a private health facility located in Durumi, Abuja, following a caesarean section.

Senior Special Assistant to the FCT Minister on Public Communications and Social Media, Lere Olayinka, said in a statement that it was unfortunate that despite the free registration of pregnant women into the Federal Capital Territory Health Insurance Scheme (FHIS), most pregnant women were still not taking advantage of the scheme.

He said;l:  “In the FCT, vulnerable persons, including pregnant women enjoy free enrollment into the FHIS, which allows them free access, through the Primary Health Care (PHC) Centres, to all services covered in the Basic Minimum Package of Health Services (BMPHS).

“Also, in alignment with the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Agenda and demonstration the Wike-led FCTA zero tolerance for maternalmortality, several hospitals in the FCT, including Gwarinpa, Nyanya, Abaji, and Kuje General Hospitals, have been designated as Comprehensive Emergency Obstetric and Neonatal Care (CEONC) centers. These facilities also offer cesarean sections free of charge.

“Our pregnant women are once again urged to take advantage of this free health insurance scheme and stop visiting quack medical personnel and unregistered health facilities”.

Chekwube Chinagorom, a 35-year-old woman, was brought in dead to Asokoro District Hospital.

She was reported to have died following a Caesarean section, at Afolmi Hospital, Durumi, Abuja, an unregistered private facility operating in a substandard and unsafe medical environment.

She had been delivered of a live baby, who was subsequently referred to Asokoro District Hospital for care.

Investigation conducted by the Private Health Establishments Registration and Monitoring Committee (PHERMC) revealed that Afolmi Hospital was not duly registered.

At the time of inspection, only one staff member, Mr. Simon Elisha Godiya, who identified himself as a Junior Community Health Extension Worker (JCHEW) was on duty.

Godiya reported that the surgical operation was performed by one Murtala Jumma in conjunction with another unidentified individual.

The case was immediately handed over to the Police for further investigation.

The officer in charge requested that the PHERMC team accompany them to the station to formally record the incident, and the team complied accordingly.

Pro-Wike group holds Bayelsa mega rally today

The mega rally and official inauguration of the Bayelsa State chapter of the NEW Associates, a new political movement to drum support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will hold in Yenagoa, the state capital on Saturday (today).

Confirming the development, the Convener of the group, George Turnah, said the rally would appreciate President Tinubu for appointing illustrious Ijaw sons and daughters into critical positions in his administration.

Turnah assured members and stakeholders that the event would be peaceful and well-coordinated.

Turnah, who is also the Zonal Secretary of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in the South-South Zone and the current Acting Chairman of the PDP in Bayelsa State, spoke during a meeting with members of the NEW Associates in Yenagoa.

Turnah, in a statement by his media assistant, Kevin Loveday Egbo emphasised the importance of political alignment insisting that leadership and followership remained essential ingredients in the political space.

He said that the outcome of any election is a collective reflection of party efforts, not individual aspirations.

Turnah described the NEW Associates as more than just a political group, but a movement grounded in ideology and values.

He said: “The NEW Associates is a political family under the leadership of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Chief Ezenwo Nyesom Wike.

“Everyone has the right to make a choice. Just like salvation, political decisions are personal. And I take full responsibility for the choices I’ve made, in 2019, 2023, and beyond, without regrets.”

He expressed firm belief in the political philosophy of Wike, describing it as a school of thought driven by vision, inclusion, and youth development.

Turnah said: “Wike is a man with foresight. The young leaders he discovered between 2011 and 2015 are now shaping the political landscape of Rivers State. That’s leadership with vision and a large heart,” he said.

“The NEW Associates is a national platform that welcomes all well-meaning Nigerians, whether PDP, APC, or others. The goal is continuity and consolidation of governance, particularly under the current Southern presidency, which is yet to complete its first term. We must resist divisive rhetoric disguised as coalitions.”

Turnah used the platform to commend President Tinubu’s administration for appointing many Ijaw sons and daughters into strategic national roles.

He singled out Dr. Samuel Ogbuku, the MD/CEO of the NDDC, whose leadership, he said, has “significantly transformed the face of the Niger Delta.”

Addressing concerns about possible disruptions, Turnah assured that the event would be orderly and security-conscious.

He said: “We’ve cooperated fully with security agencies. Our mobilization strategy is structured. We’ve narrowed down to specific groups, local governments, and associations. Every participant can be traced to the person who mobilised them.”

Turnah warned against any sponsored infiltration of the event adding that anyone causing disruption would be identified and held accountable.

He said: “If anyone creates chaos, claiming to be part of us, we will know they’re from the other side. And whatever they do to us that day, we will return in kind, until they leave office. The only things we will not disrupt are state functions.

“Wike has always acted in the best interest of the Southsouth and the Ijaw nation. The average Bayelsan, however, is tired of chasing after selfish politicians with no long-term vision

    Humble yourself, Wike tells Fubara

The Minister of Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Chief Nyesom Wike has told suspended Rivers Governor Siminalayi Fubara to humble himself because no amount of protests can bring peace to Rivers.

The former Rivers Governor insisted that peace would not be restored in Rivers except there was sincerity of purpose from all parties involved in the crisis.

Wike said the ongoing emergency rule averted serious calamities that would have befallen Rivers.

Wike spoke in a church thanksgiving service in honour of the 70th birthday of a former federal lawmaker, Ken Chikere, in Port Harcourt.

He said no amount of protest could restore the suspended leaders to power unless they embraced sincerity of purpose.

Wike lambasted traditional rulers and other leaders of the state for taking sides with the suspended Governor Siminalayi Fubara in the political battle.

He said that since the crisis, they had failed to reconcile the warring parties.

He condemned the new trend of deploying women to protest on the streets of Port Harcourt saying no amount of naked protests would restore the suspended elected officers.

He said the only thing that could bring peace to the state was a sincere reconciliation of both parties irrespective of their political leanings..

Wike said: “One month after Mr President in his wisdom declared a state of emergency to save Rivers State from anarchy, I challenge any Rivers so-called elder, even the traditional rulers, what attempt have they made to bring total peace in the State.

“I challenge any so called 90 years, 200 years, what effort since one month and one week has seen that there is total reconciliation in this state.

“No amount of going to television to abuse anybody will bring peace, because we have always said that those who thrive in crisis, when there is crisis they are happy, when there is no crisis there is no food on the table. Those people cannot be real elders.

“There is no need of embarrassing our women to be naked outside. No amount of such can bring peace, no amount of such blackmail can bring peace. What can bring peace is for you to humble yourself and say for the interest of the state I want everybody to work together.

“If you are sincere, everybody would have known. I told our leaders, yes, some people have tried to approach me I received them. I did not pursue them, but seeing me alone does not bring peace.

“There are critical stakeholders that must be involved in the process of this peace making. Nobody will be excluded. If any group will be excluded it means there is no total peace.

“Members of State Assembly and National Assembly must be involved. The two political parties must be involved, other leaders must be involved. In that way, we will now now that they are sincere in talking about peace.”

Wike asked his followers and loyalists especially the 27 members of the Assembly.to rejoice over their victory at the Supreme Court.

He said: “One thing you must go home and jubilate is this, assembly maintained there seats and you are able to set aside that kangaroo election. If anybody says you are nobody, that person must have a mental problem. So, we need peace, but let it be to the total of sincerity.

“Let it be yes, I am not coming to play like a decoy, not when you come and see somebody and you tune television, people are abusing the same person, that cannot be sign of peace.”
