    Neither Wike, nor Fubara

Siminalayi Fubara, the suspended Governor of Rivers State, is an intelligent and well-educated man. His intellect is beyond my authority to question. By all accounts, he is more than qualified to govern any state in Nigeria. In fact, several individuals who have held the office of governor — and even president — have not been as gifted as he is.

However, when Fubara ascended to the governorship, he lacked the political structure and machinery necessary to secure such a position on his own. Left to his own devices, he wouldn’t have clinched the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship ticket. That’s where Nyesom Wike, then governor of Rivers State, came in.

Wike, whose political style I have never admired, did everything within his power to impose Fubara on other governorship hopefuls within the PDP and eventually foisted him upon the state. Forget the eventual outcome of the election — Fubara knows precisely how Wike made him governor.

Naturally, the cracks began to show not long after he assumed office. Don’t let anyone deceive you into believing either party is driven by the interest of Rivers people. It’s all politics — a game of ego, influence, and control of resources. Both men are playing to the gallery with their pontifications while Rivers State continues to lose.

With emergency rule now in place, it seems Wike currently holds the upper hand. Yet, as always, the truth remains constant that nothing here is about the betterment of Rivers. I neither weep for Fubara nor do I rejoice with Wike, whom the gods appear to have favoured — at least for now.

FCT land reform to block speculation, fast-track development – Wike

…as minister inspects project to be commissioned by Tinubu

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, on Tuesday disclosed that the significant reforms in land administration in the FCT are aimed at combating land speculation and hastening the development of the nation’s capital.

Speaking with reporters shortly after a routine inspection of key infrastructure projects in the Abuja city centre, Wike clarified that the reforms are designed to discourage individuals from holding onto land allocations for speculative purposes, often waiting for market appreciation before selling.

He stressed the importance of timely development and payment to ensure the efficient allocation and utilization of land resources.

Recalled that Wike last Friday issued a 21-day ultimatum to land allottees in the nation’s capital to fully pay all charges prescribed on offers of Statutory Rights of Occupancy and submit a duly completed Letter of acceptance alongside evidence of payments, or lose the offer.

He gave all allottees in the FCT two years to develop their lands.

The minister spoke through his Senior Special Assistant (SSA) Public Communications and Social Media, Lere Olayinka while briefing reporters on the recent issues surrounding land development in FCT.

Olayinka disclosed that to date, out of the 261,914 Area Council land documents submitted for regularization, only 8,287 have been vetted, out of which only 2,358 were cleared, validated and regularized to statutory titles.

He explained that the 8,287 were vetted from 2006 to 2023 (17 years), adding that this represents just 3.2% of the total land documents submitted for vetting and regularization as at today.

The SSA said the FCT Administration is still left with 253,627 submissions in its database.

Olayinka hinted that Area Council land allocations will henceforth be regularized, adding that Area Council allottees are given 60 days ultimatum to make full payment.

Wike said: “We are trying to stop land speculators. Somebody who says he wants land in Abuja but cannot develop it in two years …that’s land speculation. Secondly, if you have been given allocation, you should be able to pay within 21 days to have your C of O. What is wrong with that? That’s also to generate funds for the government.”

Addressing concerns regarding the 21-day deadline for the payment of associated fees for the issuance of Certificate of Occupancy, the minister questioned: “Why would you not pay your fees within 21 days? What is wrong with it? There is nothing wrong. You cannot apply for land and then you don’t have money to pay for the C of O. It doesn’t make sense. 21 days is enough”.

Wike also asserted that the FCT Minister possesses the authority to implement these reforms without the need for additional enabling legislation.

Speaking on his observation of all the projects sites he visited, the FCT Minister expressed satisfaction with the progress of work on the projects, including the 15-kilometer Outer Southern Expressway (OSEX) connecting Apo and Wasa Districts, the Mabushi Bus Terminal, and the Arterial Road N20 (Wole Soyinka Way) and its interchanges linking Jahi to the Kubwa/Zuba expressway and Jabi/Utako Districts.

He said: “The one from Apo to Wasa, you can see that the CGC is doing a very good job. By the grace of God that will be ready by May. The one to Kubwa that is the interchange which is being carried out by Gilmor, they have also assured us that that also will be ready”.

At the Mabushi Bus Terminal, the Minister emphasized the importance of quality finishing and directed the Secretary of Transport, Dr Elechi Chinedum to ensure all necessary corrections are made.

He expressed dissatisfaction with the way the project has been handled, adding that it is part of the project that President Bola Tinubu will commission in May to commemorate his second year in office.

“By and large, I think we are on schedule. We are happy with what we are seeing, but the finishing of structures like this (the bus terminal) is key and I pointed out some of the things I felt should be corrected,” he concluded.

The Minister indicated that these projects are expected to be commissioned in May to commemorate President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s second year anniversary.

Wike urged all contractors handling various projects in the nation’s capital to ensure timely and agreed completion of projects.

FCT has achieved 95 percent budget implementation – Wike

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, on Monday disclosed what he described as a historic achievement of 95 percent implementation of the FCT’s 2024 statutory budget.

Wike made this known during an inspection of several ongoing infrastructure projects across the Territory, including key road constructions at Life Camp and Katampe, as well as the extensive renovation of the International Conference Centre (ICC) in Abuja.

Most of the projects will be commissioned by President Bola Tinubu to commemorate his second year in office.

Briefing reporters after the site visits, Wike who was happy about the level of the projects highlighted the significance of the achievement, adding that: “I can tell you we’ve done not less than 95 percent of the budget implementation. That is historic. It has never happened before. And if you look at the projects there, you will see that there is no project that is in the 2024 budget that we have not touched”.

The Minister explained that the extension of the FCT’s 2024 statutory budget by the National Assembly until June 2025 has been instrumental in allowing the FCT Administration to adequately fund and make great progress on ongoing projects.

Wike also informed that the FCT’s 2025 statutory budget has been submitted to the National Assembly and expressed optimism that its timely approval will further ensure the seamless continuation and completion of vital infrastructure developments within the FCT.

Expressing satisfaction with the progress observed across all inspected sites, the Minister commended the contractors for their dedication and commitment to delivering high-quality work within the stipulated timelines.

The projects inspected include the significant 4-kilometer six-lane dual carriageway connecting Life Camp Junction to Ring Road III, being constructed by Julius Berger. Upon completion, this vital artery will enhance connectivity between the districts of Kado, Karmo, Gwarimpa I, Dape, Ido-Gwari, Saburi, and Dei-Dei.

Another crucial project nearing completion is the access road from Nnamdi Azikiwe Expressway (by N16) to Judges Quarters in Katampe District. This road will also provide a vital link between the N20 (Wole Soyinka Way) in Jahi District and the Katampe and Maitama Districts, significantly improving accessibility in the area.

The Minister also expressed delight at the transformation of the International Conference Centre, noting that the extensive renovation was progressing rapidly.

He assured that the FCT Administration has ensured that the necessary funding is in place to avoid any delays in their completion.

“These projects will be inaugurated by Mr. President during his second-year anniversary celebrations. We went to the International Conference Centre, which is almost ready. The first phase of the N5 will also be ready by the end of May,” the Minister stated.

He further emphasized: “Frankly speaking, we are very impressed with what we have seen. We are on schedule. The contractors who are handling these various jobs are living up to expectations and we are also doing our own part by making sure that payments are also made so that there will not be delays”.

The minister reiterated his satisfaction with the quality of work, particularly at the International Conference Centre, expressing confidence that the revitalized facility will once again serve its intended purpose effectively.

    • Tompolo hopeful of suspended governor’s return

Former  Governor of Bayelsa State  and incumbent Senator, Seriake Dickson, has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to prevail on stakeholders in the Rivers State political crisis especially Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike and suspended Governor Siminialayi Fubara to find a common ground for tolerance and accommodation for a quicker resolution.

The advice forms part of the experience he had with Fubara after visiting him in Port Harcourt at the weekend.

Dickson, in his official Facebook Page said Fubara told him that he was confident in institutions and the leadership of the country to do the right thing.

The Senator representing Bayelsa West appreciated Fubara’s calmness and peaceful disposition in the midst of unprecedented turbulence.

Dickson said: “We discussed the extreme political developments in the state in the last couple of weeks. I appreciated his calmness and peaceful disposition in the midst of unprecedented turbulence.

“In our frank conversation, which was private, he expressed confidence in the ability of the institutions and leadership of the country to do what is right, and so do I”.

The senator hailed the people for maintaining peace and order amidst what he described as a rare and extreme political development, but warned that though everywhere in the state seemed calm, it could be the peace of the graveyard and any little trigger could alter the balance of peace across the Niger Delta.

He said: “In this regard, I want to appeal to all our people, the youths of Rivers State, and in particular the youths of Ijaw Nation, in Rivers State and across the Niger Delta, from Arogbo in Ondo State, to Ibeno in Akwa Ibom State, to continue to be peaceful and resist any provocation or incitement to violence.

“They should refrain  from violence and destructive tendencies, particularly the destruction and vandalisation of strategic oil and gas infrastructure in the region, which has the tendency to cause further pollution-damage to our already compromised environment, slow down the pace of economic development and activities in the region, and create fiscal challenges for government at all levels in the country, especially at this time when the global economy is experiencing unprecedented instability with consequences for all nations.

“On account of the above, I urge all stakeholders to place the overall well-being of Rivers State, its people, the Niger Delta region and the entire country in their decisions, utterances and actions.”

Former Niger Delta freedom fighter and Chairman of Tantita Security Services Nigeria Limited, High Chief Government Ekpemupolo aka Tompolo, has predicted the return of suspended Governor of Rivers State, Siminalayi Fubara, to the Government House.

He stressed the need for people of the Niger Delta to embrace dialogue and peaceful co-existence.

Tompolo in Ijaw language, made the statement at the weekend at a large gathering held at Aziza Temple, Gbaramatu Kingdom, Delta State, on the occasion of his 54th birthday.

Speaking on the fresh delineation of wards in Warri Federal Constituency by the Independent National Electoral Commission, he called for dialogue among stakeholders.

Recalling the tension that accompanied the remarks credited to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, he urged Ijaw people to show restraint, emphasising the need for peace and unity within Ijaw nation.

Noting the role of the Ijaw in the emergence of Wike as governor of Rivers State, he expressed confidence that Fubara would return to the top Rivers State job. He urged both parties to reconcile.

Dickson urged the Rivers Sole Administrator, whom he described as a highly decorated and respected military veteran from the Niger Delta, to refrain from actions that would not build confidence and aid the quick and amicable resolution of the crisis.

He hailed the security forces for keeping peace in the region and urged them to continue to work with stakeholders and constituted authorities  in Rivers and across the Niger Delta .

He said: “We must learn to tolerate and manage one another in spite of our imperfections and always remember the unique relationship they have built over the years, which has led to the emergence of the governor. It is always the divine prerogative of fathers to tolerate and forebear for the overall interest of all.

“On the part of the President, I would like to state that the Ijaw Nation is not at war with the Federal Government or with the President, and we are looking up to him as the leader of the nation to lead in the resolution of the issues and restore normalcy and democratic rule. I call on all leaders from the Niger Delta both at the state and national level to play an active part in the resolution of this issue.

“The Ijaw Nation is not at war with the President or the APC-led Federal Government. On the contrary the Niger Delta and the Ijaw Nation have always stood for a restructured and truly federal Nigeria where power is properly devolved, accelerated infrastructure and human capital development, environmental justice and fairness for all, and an inclusive Nigeria. On all these issues, we are encouraged to see the President as a partner from his antecedence and not a foe irrespective of party differences as some may portray.”

Pro-Wike mega rally in Bayelsa rescheduled to April 26

The much-anticipated pro-Wike mega rally initially slated for April 12, in Yenagoa, the Bayelsa state capital, has been postponed to Saturday, April 26, 2025.

Speaking to journalists in Yenagoa on Friday, Barrister George Turnah, Convener of the New Associates Group, explained that the date change was due to a scheduling conflict at the rally venue.

According to Turnah, the same venue will be used on April 12 by supporters of Pro-Diri and Pro-Tambuwal, prompting the rescheduling.

He noted that prominent leaders and elders of the Ijaw nation had appealed to the group to consider a new date, which they accepted in good faith.

Turnah, who also serves as the embattled south-south zonal secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), described the new associates as a grassroots political movement committed to supporting President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

He reaffirmed the group’s belief in the president’s vision and vowed continued support for his administration’s success.

He stated: “In light of recent developments, you may recall that several Pro-Diri and Pro-

Tambuwal supporters have issued public notices expressing their intentions to hold solidarity rallies in support of their respective leaders, opting to do so on the same date and at the same venue we have chosen for our programme.

“We are inclined to allow them the right and space to hold their events as scheduled, creating an atmosphere that will enable the entire country to witness their capacities and acceptance among the Ijaw people in Bayelsa State.

“As such, we will now hold our inauguration and mega rally on Saturday April 26, 2025, in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State.”

Reacting to his suspension by the State Working Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party, Bayelsa State chapter, Turnah dismissed the suspension as false.

He stated that the south-south zone had overturned the suspension.

He further said Justice Ekpo of Federal High Court Abuja, also upheld his position as the authentic PDP South-South Zonal Secretary, respectively.

He also noted that he had never been served with any court judgement, adding that as a lawyer, if served, he would follow the due process of the law.

JUST IN: Major shakeup in FCT over land reform

Minister of Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, on Friday issued a 21-day ultimatum to land allottees in the nation’s capital to fully pay all charges prescribed on offers of Statutory Rights of Occupancy and submit a duly completed Letter of acceptance alongside evidence of payments, or lose the offer.

Wike also gave all allottees in the FCT two years to develop their lands.

Wike’s spokesman who briefed alongside Director of Land Administration FCTA, Chijioke Nwankwoeze said: “These reforms, which will become operational from April 21, 2025, cover specific areas like conditions of grant of Statutory Right of Occupancy, contents of the Statutory Right of Occupancy Bill, contents of Letter of Acceptance/Refusal of offer of grant of Right of Occupancy, titling of Mass Housing and sectional interests, as well as regularization of Area Council Land documents.

“It should be noted that before now, the deadline for payment of bills, rents, fees and charges was not specified in the Statutory Right of Occupancy bill, and no penalty for failure to make payment promptly. This has caused delay in revenue receivable due to non-collection of Right of Occupancy (R-of-O) and non-payment of bills, slower pace of infrastructural development, sustained land speculation and racketeering while huge expenses have been incurred by the FCT Administration through repeated advertisements and publications notifying the public on the need for collection of R-of-O and timely payment of bills and charges.

“Consequently, as against the unspecified period within which to collect the Right of Occupancy (R-of-O) and make full payment of the Statutory Right of Occupancy bills and charges, land allottees now have 21 days from the date of offer, to make full payment of all bills, fees, rents and charges prescribed on offers of Statutory Rights of Occupancy and submit a duly completed Letter of acceptance alongside evidence of payments, or lose the offer.

“Also, as against the lengthy period within which to develop allocated lands, the period within which to erect and complete developments on any land granted in the FCT is now two years from the date of the commencement of the R-of-O. Therefore, any R-of-O bills and any other payments made outside the stipulated 21 days shall be considered invalid while any land granted should be developed within two years.

“On lands previously allocated by Area Councils, the law stipulates that all lands in the FCT are urban land. It therefore becomes necessary that all land documents issued by the Area Councils are considered for regularization to statutory titles in line with relevant statutes.

“It should be noted that in 2006, the Zonal Land, Planning and Survey offices of the six Area Councils were directed to submit all Area Council allocation lists, layouts, files and registers to Abuja Geographic Information System (AGIS)/Lands Department, and this was done by the Area Councils.

“However, to date, out of the 261,914 Area Council land documents submitted for regularization, only 8,287 have been vetted, out of which only 2,358 were cleared, validated and regularized to statutory titles. The 8,287 were vetted from 2006 to 2023 (17 years), and this represents just 3.2% of the total land documents submitted for vetting and regularization as at today, the FCT Administration is still left with 253,627 submissions in its database.

“Area Council land documents successfully vetted and confirmed would have statutory titles on such lands issued and the allottees will have sixty days to make full payments of all bills, fees, rents and charges prescribed, failure of which the offers shall become invalid”.

On Mass Housing, Olayinka said: “it should be noted that the Mass Housing Programme was initiated in 2000 to utilize the Public Private Partnership (PPP) strategy with the objective of providing affordable housing for the residents of FCT.

“However, from the inception of the Mass Housing programme in 2000 till date, out of the 445 Mass Housing allocations granted, only two developers have successfully met the terms and conditions. A new operational framework for titling of Mass Housing and Sectional Interests has been developed to fast-track the exercise efficiently, effectively and diligently, in line with the Minister’s vision to restore confidence in the administration of lands in the FCT.

“Currently, the holders/occupiers of properties within the various Mass Housing Estates in the FCT do not pay bills, rents, fees and charges to the government despite having held and occupied the properties for decades. In recognition of the urgent need to issue titles to the beneficiaries of Mass Housing and Sectional Interests, all applications for titling are to be made by the Subscribers/Developers to the Department of land Administration for processing. Processing of titles for Mass Housing and Sectional Interests shall commence on April 21, 2025, in line with the new operational framework”.

Rivers saga: Wike knocks ex-governor George over comments

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has responded to accusations by former Rivers State Governor Ada George, who blamed him for the ongoing political crisis in the state.

Speaking through his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and Social Media, Lere Olayinka, Wike described the former governor’s remarks as both “funny and unfortunate.”

In a statement issued on Thursday, Olayinka said it was regrettable that some elders in Rivers State chose to remain silent when suspended Governor Siminalayi Fubara allegedly acted like an emperor, but are now crying foul like “children who lost their most prized toys.”

Olayinka criticized Ada George for being among those who applauded Fubara, even as he allegedly withheld salaries and entitlements of Rivers State House of Assembly members. He said it was hypocritical for the former governor to now speak out and assign blame over the political unrest in the state.

During a media briefing, Ada George accused Wike of being behind the imposition of a state of emergency and the appointment of sole administrators in all 23 local government areas of the state.

In his response, Wike’s aide questioned the credibility of those now parading as elders. “Unlike these people masquerading as the ‘Rivers Elders and Leaders Forum’, true elders maintain neutrality in times of conflict among the younger generation, so they can command respect and mediate from a position of integrity,” Olayinka stated.

He said, “When Fubara was orchestrating the burning and demolition of the Rivers State House of Assembly, supposed elders like Ada George were hailing him. They were telling him it was normal for three members to run a House of Assembly of 32 members, with 11 as a quorum of one-third that can sit and 22 as two-thirds that can pass budgets.

“When the President and Commander-In-Chief of the Armed Forces of Nigeria, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, intervened in the crisis and resolutions signed by all parties, it was this same Ada George that described the President’s intervention as ‘executive rascality.’

“He (Ada George) went further to say that the intervention by the President contravened the doctrine and practice of separation of powers and unilaterally suspended the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.’ They were everywhere, calling the President a meddlesome interloper and hailing Fubara.

“Even when the Supreme Court ruled and made a clear and unambiguous pronouncement, Ada George and his so-called elders still saw no reason they should tell Fubara to come down from his high horse of arrogance and lawlessness. Rather, they watched as he reeled out threats upon threats, including openly saying that he would give instructions as to what to do at the appropriate time.

Read Also: Eradiri to Diri: leave Ijaw out of your political interest, fight with Wike

“True to his threats, Fubara gave instructions, and Nigerians saw the outcome when oil pipelines started coming up in flames.

“Now that Fubara’s lawlessness has resulted in the imposition of emergency rule, the same elders who failed to stand and act like real elders are sobbing like children whose most prized toys have been taken away. It is funny and unfortunate.

“They have even turned themselves to monitoring spirits, monitoring when Wike comes to Rivers State and when he leaves, as if it has now become illegal for a Minister to visit his home-state and associate freely with the people”.

While telling Ada George and his Rivers Elders and Leaders Forum to blame themselves for taking sides when they should be neutral, Olayinka said, “The moment an elder takes sides in a conflict between two children, such an elder has lost the right to intervene and resolve the conflict.”

The minister expressed optimism that the President’s visit to the FCT Area Councils will strengthen ties with the people at the grassroots, adding that they will also have the opportunity to see their President in person.

The Minister said: “We are going to work that out, at least he (Mr. President) should be able to go to one of the Area Councils and let the people see that yes, this is their President, not just commissioning roads in the cities.

“We will plead that he visits at least one or two Area Councils so that the people will be happy that yes, this is their President. We can assure you that he will at least go to Gwagwalada, go to Kwali or Bwari where we have the Law School. We are going to make sure that Mr. President comes to identify with his people”.

On his assessment of the project sites visited, the FCT Minister expressed satisfaction with the progress and quality of work observed at various project sites, including the 10km Agoma Palace/Market/Park roads and other internal roads in Gwagwalada Area Council, the 15km A2 to Pai road in Kwali Area Council, as well as the War College/Army Checkpoint and other ancillary roads within the Bwari Area Council.

Built as Public Private Partnership (PPP) between the Abuja Investments Company Limited (AICL) and Mesotho Group Limited, under a Build Operate and Transfer (BOT) arrangement, the Minister said the international market is a testament to what can be achieved when public and private sectors collaborate with purpose.

According to him, the market is more than a trading hub, stressing that “It is a thriving ecosystem designed to support businesses, empower entrepreneurs, create jobs, and attract both local and international investors”.

Represented by the Minister of State for FCT, Dr Mariya Mahmoud, he said the international market will promote local and national economies through increased trade and commerce.

“It will generate revenue for the government through taxes, levies, and other charges; and more importantly, provide employment opportunities for a wide range of people — from traders and artisans to logistics providers in line with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR,” Wike added.

The Minister praised Ambassador Maureen Tamuno’s leadership of Abuja Investments Company Limited for driving economic growth in the FCT, stressing that under her guidance, AICL has been instrumental in fostering strategic investments, promoting partnerships, and showcasing Abuja’s vast investment potential.

He was upbeat that the facility will serve as a catalyst for commercial activity, offering modern facilities, secure spaces, and a platform for businesses to expand and compete globally.

In her remarks, Group Managing Director, Abuja Investments Company Limited, Amb. Maureen Tamuno lauded the FCT Minister for his dedication to transforming Abuja into a world-class city.

She also commended his visionary leadership and commitment to creating a thriving business and investment hub in the Federal Capital Territory.

Atiku, Wike: the jousting continues ad nauseam

Former vice president Atiku Abubakar’s 2023 presidential race is a story of what might have been. Does he regret how he ran the race? Does he know a different outcome was actually within his reach, had he been less presumptuous? Or was he just plain incompetent in political strategy? There is nothing in the former vice president’s public statements, now or in the past 20 months or so, that gives any indication he was remorseful about the tactics he used in the race. If he suffered pangs of remorse privately, he has been clever and successful in masking it. If he didn’t feel any remorse, then he must be more stoical than many people give him credit. But any normal and clever politician in Alhaji Atiku’s worn shoes would have pined away in regret for frittering away what was undoubtedly his best chance to clinch the race.

Last week’s verbal jousting with Federal Capital Territory (FCT) minister Nyesom Wike indicates that the former vice president actually remains sanguine about his monumental electoral loss. He may never get the chance again, whether to run for the top office or win. In 2023, all he needed to do was indulge in the realpolitik that had hallmarked his decades-long political career. He was not the most perceptive and principled of leaders, but nature at least afforded him chances upon chances in two or three dizzying months in mid-2022 to win the diadem he had coveted all his life. Uncharacteristically, for someone so placid about political morality and so unfeeling about other people’s opinions, he flung it out of the window and failed to seize the moment. Last week, in their verbal jousting, both men showed who was to blame and what that critical factor that would have produced a different outcome was.

Alhaji Atiku drew the first blood in a television interview where he insisted that Mr Wike’s character disqualified him from being picked as running mate. He was not only the second pick by a committee the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) set up to do the sieving, the former vice president said dismissively, his role in the Rivers State crisis and his giddy display at the FCT made the former Rivers State governor a misfit for the onerous responsibility of deputizing for the president. Now, of all the criticisms anyone might level at Mr Wike, assaulting his character is the most intolerable. He believes he is a political purist, and more, he believes his judgement is generally infallible, moored, he thinks, on the most indubitable ethos any system could forge. For instance, in his diatribe against Rivers governor Siminalayi Fubara, the issue of character failure of his successor remains the recurring theme. To, therefore, be accused of character failure was a gauntlet he would never fail to take up.

The former vice president had obviously forgotten his facts or mixed up his story, thundered Mr Wike through his spokesman. The PDP committee in question, roared Mr Wike, actually had the FCT minister as the number one pick, with 13 votes, and former Delta State governor Ifeanyi Okowa, the number two pick with only two votes. The former vice president, he said, mixed up his facts or lied sacrilegiously in the time of Ramaddan. Incidentally, PDP spokesmen later shamefacedly admitted that Mr Wike was first pick. And as for impugning his character as governor, former governor, and now FCT minister, the former vice president, he said, simply evaded the truth, avoided blame for his 2023 humiliation, and pursued red herrings. Mr Wike said he had since moved on beyond the 2022 mishap, advising Alhaji Atiku to do the same.

Unfortunately for the former vice president, Mr Wike, despite his own private failings, many of which are obvious, was right in his summation of why the PDP lost the presidential election. It was tactical folly for the PDP presidential candidate to have imagined that picking Dr Okowa would enable him to run with the hare and hunt with the hound. He had thought that the Ifeanyi in Dr Okowa’s name would help him appeal to both the Igbo and South-South votes. At another time and perhaps era, theoretically, he would be right. But not when a certain Peter Obi was also in the race on the platform of the Labour Party (LP), and certainly not when the Southeast’s herd mentality could not be immediately discounted or mitigated by any known factor. What is even more flummoxing is that everyone, save the former vice president, knew that the ideologically superficial Mr Obi was nevertheless sensible enough to know that all he needed to do in the race was lock the Southeast down and make a dangerous, if fatal, pitch for the Christian vote. The LP candidate was in fact coherent and largely successful in both efforts. It clearly sounded the death knell to a presidential ambition to ignore the damage Mr Obi was capable of doing, and to pick an intelligent but largely uncharismatic running mate with no strategic appeal.

If Alhaji Atiku had picked Mr Wike, as the more politically savvy PDP committee suggested, he would have saved the party from fracturing, thus defanging the nuisance value of the Group of Five (G-5), kept the usually conservative South-South in the bag, set the cat among the Southeast pigeons who would doubt their insular champion, and convinced enough Middle Belt and core North voters to put all their eggs in one basket as he parochially preached. He had the clearest and most enticing pathway to the presidency in the 2023 poll. But instead, he was sure, without any basis, that his main opponent, the then candidate Tinubu, would falter. He then reinforced the farce by reposing confidence in the promises of many presidential insiders of the day, leading him to defy the threats of the G-5 and Mr Wike. No one so more willingly committed political suicide.

Alhaji Atiku may be unprincipled, but he is not stupid. He probably knows that he made a big mistake in 2023. He also probably suspects that the last presidential election was his best and last chance to run for the coveted office. But he needs a sacrificial lamb to convince the world that too many ‘traitors’ doomed his electoral chances, and also needs any ointment wherever he can find it to salve his wounded conscience. He has never wished to be a statesman, and would, therefore, be loth to admit his error nobly and bravely. He will, therefore, continue to joust with Mr Wike, abuse him at every turn, and nitpick his faults. Redirecting the attention to the FCT minister will, however, not mitigate his failure to make hay while the sun shone in 2023. Whereas hope may be rising for Mr Obi at the LP as the Supreme Court has weighed in against the intransigent party chairman, Julius Abure, in the PDP, and in the foreseeable future, the pall is unlikely to lift anytime soon, regardless of how mendacious the former vice president can be.
