Wike inaugurates new board of trustees for IBB Golf Club

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has inaugurated the newly appointed Board of Trustees for the Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida (IBB) Golf Club.

The board is to be led by Hon. Justice Monica Dongban-Mensem, President of the Court of Appeal.

During the inauguration ceremony at the Minister’s official residence in Life Camp, the Minister emphasized the FCT Administration’s commitment to restoring order and efficiency to the prestigious club, which has recently experienced internal challenges.

Wike said: “Let me on behalf of the FCT Administration thank members of the Board of Trustees that was inaugurated this afternoon for responding to the call. There has been crisis in the IBB Gulf Course and as the owner of that Gulf Course, we cannot fold our hands and see things deteriorate”.

He highlighted the necessity for the new board to conduct a transparent and credible Executive Committee election, amend the club’s constitution, and ensure its proper registration.

The Minister also clarified the ownership status of the club, reiterating that it remains the property of the Federal Capital Territory Administration.

“You must know that we are still the owners of the Golf course. It is not privatized. Some of you have held the view that because the government gave you C of O, it means that the property belongs to you. No. The government has set up agencies and universities. The government gives them C of O just to protect the property. But that does not mean that because we gave you C of O as the University of Abuja, the government does not own the University of Abuja. This is not correct. Even us in FCT, we own Abuja Investment Company, we give them land, we give them C of O, but that does not mean that the agency does not belong to us. It still belongs to us,” he explained.

Tinubu to commission projects in FCT councils for second anniversary – Wike

Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike, has announced his intention to request President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s presence in the Area Councils to commission completed infrastructure projects during celebration of the President’s second year in office.

Wike stated this while addressing reporters shortly after a routine inspection of ongoing infrastructure projects slated for commissioning in May to commemorate President Tinubu’s second-year anniversary across Gwagwalada, Kwali, and Bwari Area Councils of the FCT on Saturday.

The Minister expressed optimism that the President’s visit to the FCT Area Councils will strengthen ties with the people at the grassroots, adding that they will also have the opportunity to see their President in person.

The Minister said: “We are going to work that out, at least he (Mr. President) should be able to go to one of the Area Councils and let the people see that yes, this is their President, not just commissioning roads in the cities.

“We will plead that he visits at least one or two Area Councils so that the people will be happy that yes, this is their President. We can assure you that he will at least go to Gwagwalada, go to Kwali or Bwari where we have the Law School. We are going to make sure that Mr. President comes to identify with his people”.

Wike recalled President Tinubu’s earlier directive to prioritise the development of satellite towns to decongest the Abuja city centre

He emphasised that the President is very keen on developing the satellite towns, thereby reducing travel time for residents commuting to the city.

On his assessment of the project sites visited, the FCT Minister expressed satisfaction with the progress and quality of work observed at various project sites, including the 10km Agoma Palace/Market/Park roads and other internal roads in Gwagwalada Area Council, the 15km A2 to Pai road in Kwali Area Council, as well as the War College/Army Checkpoint and other ancillary roads within the Bwari Area Council.

He described the projects as good-quality jobs executed by good-quality contractors, adding that the administration is keeping to standard, providing quality infrastructure that will make the people happy and turn around the economies of the areas concerned.

The Minister said; “We have gone round to three satellite towns in three Area Councils. Look at the A2 to Pai, look at the one in Gwagwalada and Ushafa, you can attest that these are quality jobs done by quality contractors. So, we are happy that we are keeping to standard and that’s what is important, not just giving out infrastructure but quality infrastructure that will make the people happy and turn around the economies of these areas.”

He commended the contractors for their commitment to delivering quality work and assured them of adequate funding to ensure timely project completion.

….Alerts police to develop land allocated to them

As the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) gears up for scores of project inaugurations to mark President Bola Tinubu’s second year in office on May 29, the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike on Friday raised concerns over land hoarding by public institutions.

The Minister raised the concerns while speaking to reporters after the inspection of the 15-kilometre OSEX Road leading to Wassa being handled by CGC Construction, culminating at the road leading to the EFCC Academy.

Wike, who expressed satisfaction over the pace and quality of work done by the contractors, was unimpressed with the size of land acquired by the University of Abuja, and voiced strong concerns over what he described as “land grabbing in the name of education.”

He did not spare the Nigerian Police Force too, who were put on notice over undeveloped parcels of land allocated to them years ago.

He said: “We are very happy with what we are seeing and the quality of jobs. Mr. President will be happy too when he comes to inaugurate them. This is what it means to keep promises made.

“You can’t deny development for others and a university will go and take over 1,000 hectares of land. For what purpose? We’ve been to universities across the country. Just grabbing land is not what makes a university; it is infrastructure and quality.

“What future are we talking about?” Wike fired back when asked if the land might be for long-term expansion.

“Before you know it, they will begin to lease it out. If you don’t develop it, the government will take it back and give it to those who will”.

Pressed on whether the administration would reclaim the land, the Minister said: “Don’t jump the gun. Let the Director of Lands come to me. We’ll invite the university and the Police and ask why they’ve not developed the area”, he stated.

  • Rivers crisis: Uncertainty as Wike, Fubara reconciliation stalls

Rivers crisis: Uncertainty as Wike, Fubara reconciliation stalls

    • Ijaw Nation mismanaged crisis, says IYC boss

There is no breakthrough yet in the effort to reconcile the warring personalities in the Rivers State political crisis, The Nation can now report.

Governor Siminilayi Fubara, Deputy Governor Ngozi Odu and all the state legislators were suspended for six months under the state of emergency imposed on the state on March 20 by President Bola Tinubu on account of the crisis.

His request to the National Assembly for the endorsement of the state of emergency declaration was promptly granted.

The two chambers however proposed to set up a committee to reconcile the warring personalities before the expiration of the six-month suspension.

But two weeks after, there is no concrete action yet to implement the proposed reconciliation between Governor Fubara and his supporters and Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike and his supporters.

Political sources in the state told The Nation in Port Harcourt that one of the factors delaying the reconciliation process was the role played by some notable leaders in the state and the Ijaw nation in the crisis.

One of the sources, an Ijaw, who does not want his name in print, said  that instead of maintaining neutrality during the crisis, most of the leaders took sides and had lost the expected credibility to galvanise a genuine move for reconciliation.

According to him, many Ijaw leaders sided with the governor and despised Wike, a development he said aggravated the crisis.

“Those that should have led us out of the woods this time around took sides in the crisis. They lack the credibility to call the two parties to a roundtable,” the source said.

“Former President Goodluck Jonathan, who should have led the peace talks at this time, was pushed to side with Governor Fubara in the crisis.

“The Ijaw National Congress (INC), led by Prof. Benjamin Okaba, disappointed the Ijaw through its obvious partiality in the matter. Prof. Okaba did not help matters at all.

“The body can no longer be deployed to ensure genuine reconciliation. The leadership of the Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF) also took a position in the crisis.

“You remember that all the elders in Rivers are already divided into Wike’s or Fubara’s elders.

“These are people that should have risen to the occasion at this point, but they no longer command the respect that can foster genuine reconciliation.

“As it stands, there is nothing visible being done to kick-start any reconciliation.”

Fubara has returned to his private residence in Port Harcourt while many of the suspended lawmakers are said to be holidaying outside the country.

The President of Ijaw Youths Council (IYC) Worldwide, Jonathan Lokpobiri, said if the Ijaw had applied tact as against threats, the Rivers problem would have been nipped in the bud before it got out of hand.

Jonathan said: “Permit me to reflect on the state we are as Ijaw nation regarding the state of emergency in Rivers.

“I can, with all sense of responsibility and conviction, state that if we had applied wisdom in the management of this crisis in Rivers, we would not be where we are today.

“Instead of using wisdom in matters we can nip in the bud, we chose to threaten war that we were not prepared for.

“I have seen over times that emotion has never won a war. But planning and strategic consultations do.

“People in the name of struggle, even in the matters we can nip in the bud and caution ourselves internally, rush to the media and threaten war and give the enemies an opportunity to fortify themselves for it, and when the war comes, we no longer speak.”

Jonathan claimed some leaders spoke carelessly when they were supposed to lead the peace process.

He, however, said such leaders suddenly went quiet when they were expected to actualise the threats they issued.

He said the situation in Rivers was never a war between the Ijaw and the Ikwerre ethnic nationalities and wondered what would have happened if the Ikwerre had returned the threats.

Jonathan said: “People speak carelessly in an attempt to put an ethnic group into a war that is avoidable. For those who threatened fire and brimstone, the war came but I didn’t hear their voices anymore.

“We must be wise in prosecuting the struggles of the Niger Delta.

“If this was how our leaders went about their struggle, I am not sure anybody would have respected the Ijaw nation.

“Most of those making unguarded statements are people we clap for without cautioning them.

“There is no war between Ijaw and Ikwerre and any other ethnic group. If the Ikwerre ethnic group had responded to our unguarded statements, there would be war already in Rivers.”

Jonathan said while he would like Fubara to return to office quickly and complete his tenure, the Ijaw must avoid resorting to emotions in times of crisis.

He said: “Sometimes wisdom is stronger than the arms we think we have gathered.

“If we had solved this problem internally as we advised earlier, we wouldn’t get to this embarrassing moment of a state of emergency.

“I expected missiles to flow when this state of emergency was declared, but those who threatened the war never said anything anymore.”

President of the Movement for Izon Ethnic Nationality (MOSIEND), Kennedy Tonjo-West, offered to begin consultations necessary to start reconciliation.

West recalled that MOSIEND was neutral during the crisis and only advised both parties to mend their fences in the interest of peace and development of Rivers.

“I am already undertaking some consultations so that the process of reconciliation can start on time.

“We want Rivers to return to a process of reconciliation without any delay.”

Rivers Sole Administrator, Vice-Admiral Ibok Ibas (rtd), assumed office on March 20 following the declaration of emergency rule in the state.

Fubara’s kinsmen urge Tinubu to reverse Rivers emergency rule

Kinsmen of suspended Governor Fubara from Opobo-Nkoro Local Government Area of the state have appealed to President Bola Tinubu to end the emergency rule.

They said reversing the emergency rule would allow for diplomatic and justifiable resolutions of the lingering political crisis in the state.

In a communique at the end of a meeting at Opobo, Fubara’s hometown, critical stakeholders from the area said the declaration was unconstitutional and counter-productive, claiming it had induced untold hardship and economic strangulation in the state.

The communique was signed by Amaopusenibo Ben Daminabo, Prof.Blessing Jaja, Alabo-Elect Edward Namiesimagha, Dr. Roseline Apawari Uranta, Alabo Sam Stewart, Maclean Minimah, and Amaopusenibo Emma Taribo, among others.

The Opobo/Nkoro leaders said: “We affirm our inalienable commitment to the unity, peaceful coexistence and stability of our state and nation in line with universally acceptable democratic principles and ethos in line with the extant provisions of the 1999 constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended).

“Whereas we unequivocally subscribe to proactive intervention by all and sundry to ensure restoration and sustenance of peace, safety and security of life and property of the citizenry, with the highest sense of patriotism, responsibility and unwavering commitment to the peace, unity, stability and progress of our dear nation, Nigeria, we express deep concerns regarding the declaration of state of emergency in Rivers.”

Addressing the President, they said: “While we acknowledge Your Excellency’s commitment to upholding law and order across the federation and your unwavering determination to ensure the safety of lives and property of all Nigerians, we regrettably observed that the decision fell short of its constitutional requirements as provided under the relevant sections of 1999 constitution of Nigeria as amended.

“It is evident the issues/matters presented to you were evidently blown out of proportion and did not reflect realities on ground in Rivers State. As at today, Rivers, despite recent political tensions, is not in a state of lawlessness or breakdown of law and order as encapsulated in the constitution to warrant extreme measure”.

The leaders said contrary to all the lies bandied by those they said did not mean well for the state, Fubara publicly declared his acceptance of the Supreme Court’s judgment and his readiness to implement it to the letter.”

They highlighted Fubara’s efforts toward the re-presentation of the 2025 Appropriation Bill (Budget) to the state lawmakers, payment of backlog of salaries and allowances to them and provision of a suitable place for the conduct of legislative businesses.

They observed that the Sole Administrator, Vice-Marshal Ibok Ibas (rtd) confirmed that the Rivers State House of Assembly Complex upgrade project by Siminalayi Fubara had reached over 80 per cent completion.

They said: “No evidence whatsoever that oil pipelines and or other critical national assets in Rivers State have been bombed or in any way attacked nor tampered with in the state.

“No single life has been lost or anyone killed as erroneously claimed by the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, SAN, on national television.

“The perceived crisis is largely politically orchestrated and motivated, and does not reflect the general atmosphere of peace enjoyed by all LGAs, including Opobo/Nkoro LGA where His Excellency, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, GSSRS our suspended Governor hails from and across the other 22 LGAs of Rivers State.

“Security agencies have not had any challenging situation of threat to law and order nor any disruptions in the general peaceful atmosphere in the State.

“Traditional institutions, local leadership and community structures have continued to promote peace among various groups.

“The general populace remains peaceful, law-abiding, and committed to harmonious coexistence.

“We reaffirm the existing unalloyed confidence in the ability of the governor of Rivers State, Sir (Dr.) Siminalayi Fubara to pilot the affairs of the state as provided under the extant law.

“Rather than a state of emergency, we most respectfully urge Your Excellency to consider more diplomatic and constructive approaches to resolving the prevailing tensions.”

The leaders recommended high level stakeholders engagement to de-escalate tensions and strengthen security agencies to handle isolated security challenges more effectively without invoking emergency powers.

  • Too late for Atiku to buy character, integrity – Wike

Too late for Atiku to buy character, integrity – Wike

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has been told that it was already too late for him to buy character and integrity.

The Minister of Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike said no one could have knew him better than President Olusegun Obasanjo,  under whom he served as Vice President for eight years.

Wike, who spoke through his Senior Special Assistant (SSA), Lere Olayinka on Public Communications and Social Media, on Sunday was reacting to statement by the Atiku Media Office that character was the reason the decision of the committee set up by the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) selected its Vice Presidential candidate for the 2023 election was rejected.

He said one Nigerian that can never be found in the gathering of men of character and integrity is Atiku, stating Obasanjo attested to this in his book; My Watch.

Read Also: Atiku, Wike clash again over PDP’s 2023 VP nomination

Olayinka said; “One of the reasons Wike first rejected Atiku’s offer to have him as his running mate was his not too impressive character and integrity rating, until he was prevailed upon. And this, Atiku exhibited when he rejected the decision of committee the party set up to pick his running mate even after telling everyone that the decision of the committee will be bidding on him.

“Now, after his lies that he picked his running mate based on the committee report that placed the former Governor of Delta State, Dr Ifeanyi Okowa, as number one was bursted, he is now sermonising about character and integrity,  which he, himself does not have.

“Funny that the same Atiku, that his boss described as a ‘blatant and shameless liar,’ is the one talking about character.

“For the records, Obasanjo said in his book, ‘My Watch’ that ‘What I did not know, which came out glaringly later, was his parental background which was somewhat shadowy, his propensity to corruption, his tendency to disloyalty, his inability to say and stick to the truth all the time, a propensity for poor judgement, his belief and reliance on marabouts, his lack of transparency, his trust in money to buy his way out on all issues and his readiness to sacrifice morality, integrity, propriety, truth and national interest for self and selfish interest.’

“Up till today,  Atiku has not debunked what his boss said about him.

“Unlike Atiku,  Wike does not hide or pretend on where he stands on issues. He is not one that will do a tweet on major issues and rush to delete it. He didn’t pretend about his position on the 2023 election and he won’t pretend on where he will stand in 2027.

“It is Atiku, that should start being truthful and reliable, especially now that he is old, because everything should not be about desperation to be President”.

  • Tinubu tasks Wike to deliver on infrastructural gains

Tinubu tasks Wike to deliver on infrastructural gains

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has urged the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) administration to ensure the rapid infrastructural development being undertaken under his leadership translates into political success for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 elections.

Speaking on Sunday during the Eid-el-Fitr homage at the State House, Abuja, Tinubu, in a subtle warning, reminded the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, that his position depended on ensuring the political dividends of his administration’s efforts were fully realized.

“I remember the day Nyesom Wike came to me and said, ‘Please, take us out of this problem of TSA so that I can do more work and achieve more.’ Then I said, ‘Okay, tell me what you’re about to do.’ And he presented it. And I threw in my own political guide, ‘Would that give me any opportunity for my party to win the election in FCT?’” Tinubu revealed.

“I said, ‘I know where you are coming from, your own party or my party. If this thing goes too much in your own favour, you will lose your job.’ Then he said, ‘Okay, we settle that, Oga,’” the President added.

The exchange highlighted Tinubu’s strategic expectations from the ongoing projects in the FCT, which have seen significant improvements in infrastructure, healthcare, and education.

He praised Wike’s performance as FCT Minister, noting that his initiatives have revitalized several long-abandoned projects, improved healthcare facilities, and enhanced educational institutions.

“The opening up of rural areas, the revival of abandoned projects, and the completion of the Vice President’s residence are some of the key developments,” Tinubu said.

He acknowledged the minister’s efforts in restoring critical public services and infrastructure that had been neglected for years.

“The health centers are being rehabilitated. The health facilities of the residents of FCT are being upgraded. Our teachers at school are being rehabilitated, buildings are furnished. Thank you, Wike,” he stated.

Tinubu further emphasized that governance should focus on tangible improvements for the people, stressing that security and economic stability were also being strengthened.

“Today, we are living in peace, security is improving, and food prices are lowering. We are able to go to the market and do business,” he noted.

He also highlighted the importance of national unity and diversity, pointing out Wike’s success as a Southerner leading the capital city in the heart of Northern Nigeria.

“Surprisingly, Nyesom Wike is not from the North. He’s not a Hausa man. He’s from the southern part of Nigeria. And his ability to work in the center of the northern part of Nigeria is yielding fruits. That is a very good reflection of our diversity that we must use for our prosperity,” Tinubu said.

The President urged Nigerians to uphold the values of discipline, tolerance, and compassion taught during the Ramadan period.

He called for continuous prayers for the country’s progress, reminding citizens that power is a trust given by God and should be used for the collective good.

“I am just a custodian of your trust. It’s only Almighty Allah that gives power. And He says, ‘If I give it to you, you must use it in the righteous way. You must be humane. You must follow my teachings. And do great things,’” he said.

Tinubu further appealed for unity and collaboration among Nigerians, emphasizing the need to support one another in both times of joy and need.

“We must continue to share. We must continue to remember the less privileged people, the orphanage, the widows, the have-nots, believing that we can share both in joy and in times of need. And we can believe that Nigeria is greater than any one of us, including myself as the President”, he said.

He expressed confidence in his administration’s ability to transform the country through progressive policies and reiterated his commitment to national development.

“Let us build together, continue in harmony. We can do great things in Nigeria. It’s true,” he concluded.

In his remarks, the Minister of the FCT, Nyesom Wike, noted that removing the FCT administration from the Treasury Single Account (TSA), establishing the FCT Civil Service Commission, creating two new Mandate Secretariats for Women and Youths, and appointing Permanent Secretaries, have all bolstered the FCTA’s governance structure and enhanced service delivery.

According to him, these reforms lead to a better quality of life for everyday residents.

In anticipation of Tinubu’s second anniversary, Wike invited the President to the commissioning of projects completed in the past 12 months.

“As we approach the second anniversary of your administration, we are excited about the array of impactful projects that we have lined up for commissioning.

“These projects, designed to improve infrastructure, economic opportunities, and the overall quality of life, stand as evidence to your administration’s commitment to national development.

“We look forward to hosting Your Excellency in the FCT to witness firsthand the tangible progress that has been made under your leadership over the last 12 months,” Wike said.

Wike also on behalf of the Federal Capital Territory Administration presented a sallah special greetings card to the President.

Wike pledged the FCT administration’s “unwavering loyalty and support for the Renewed Hope Agenda” and promised to continue cooperating to ensure the success of the economic reforms of President Tinubu.

Reacting to the confidence and praises showered on him by the President in his speech, Wike reaffirmed his commitment to the administration’s agenda and expressed gratitude for the President’s acknowledgment of his work.

“I feel very happy that my boss has confidence in me. If your boss, in public, says you are doing well, that is encouragement to continue doing the job assigned,” Wike told journalists after the event.

He also hinted at more projects in the pipeline for the FCT, promising that the next round of developments would be no less significant than those previously undertaken.

“The committee is working. You can be assured it can’t be less than what we did last time,” Wike stated.

Present at the event were the Vice President, Kashim Shettima; the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu and the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris.

On the entourage of the Minister were traditional rulers from the area councils, religious leaders, lawmakers representing the FCT at the National Assembly, area councils’ chairpersons, senior judicial officers, among others, reflecting the diversity of Nigeria’s capital city.

    • FCT Minister accuses ex-VP of lying during Ramadan
    • You’ve zero character, Atiku tells Wike

The running verbal exchange between former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and the Minister of Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Nyesom Wike over the former’s choice of a running mate as PDP candidate in the 2023 presidential election continued yesterday.

The two chieftains of the Peoples Democratic Party had fallen apart after the presidential primaries of the PDP in the build-up to the 2023 elections, following which Atiku chose former Delta State governor, Ifeanyi Okowa, as his running mate ahead of Wike, the then governor of Rivers State, who came second to Atiku at the primaries.

Atiku had explained his choice of Okowa at the time, saying that he opted for the former Delta State governor not only because he was someone he could work with but also because he had the potential to become president.

In a recent interview, however, Atiku gave a different reason for choosing Okowa as running mate, saying that his choice was based on the recommendation of the committee set up by the party for that purpose.

Wike, however, described Atiku’s latest claim as false, accusing the former vice president of lying during the holy month of Ramadan.

The FCT Minister, who spoke through his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and Social Media, Lere Olayinka, said it was unfortunate that Atiku could not respect the holy month of Ramadan and avoid telling lies, wondering how a committee would present a candidate with two votes as first choice ahead of one who had 13 votes.

“Wike never put himself forward to be Atiku’s running mate then. Atiku did by himself, and he (Wike) accepted his offer with conditions,” Olayinka said.

He said it was a fact that in the committee report, Wike had 13 votes while Okowa had two.

“The committee set up by the PDP picked Wike as Atiku’s running mate. But for reasons best known to him, he settled for Okowa who had two votes from the committee members.

“That’s the truth Atiku should tell and stand with; not trying to colour his decision with falsehood,” he said.

Olayinka, who noted that for devout Muslims the period of Ramadan is that of holiness, said: “Al-Bukhaari (1903, 6057) quoted Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) as saying that Holy Prophet Mohammed (PBUH) said: ‘Whoever does not give up false speech and acting upon it, and ignorance, Allah (Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala) has no need of him giving up his food and drink.’

“Unfortunately, Atiku chose to tell lies so brazenly during the holy month of Ramadan, obviously forgetting that Allah (SWT) does not hearken to the prayers of liars, probably the reason he (Atiku) has continually failed in his desperation to be president of Nigeria.”

While advising Atiku to always be honest to stand by his decisions, Olayinka said the FCT Minister was no longer interested in what happened or what did not happen concerning the 2023 presidential election.

“Like I said earlier, Wike has no regrets for Atiku not picking him as his running mate, and he also has no regrets taking the position he took concerning the presidential election,” he said.

Atiku: Learning without character is equal to zero

Responding to Wike in a statement yesterday, the Atiku Media Office accused the Wike camp of trying to rewrite history, saying its attention had been drawn to yet another emotional outburst disguised as a press statement from the FCT Minister’s camp.

It said: “While we understand that bitterness often finds expression in misplaced aggression, we must remind Mr. Wike and his team that a bitter heart isn’t capable of charity, nor does it inspire unity, healing, or truth.

“Once again, facts have been twisted in a desperate attempt to rewrite history. Mr. Wike, through his spokesperson, claims that he had 13 votes from a committee set up to recommend a vice presidential running mate, while Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa had only two.

“Let us be clear: there are no laid down rules or laws on the selection process of a running mate. Committees, consultations and recommendations are advisory in nature. The final decision rests solely and exclusively with the presidential candidate, in this case, Atiku Abubakar.

“It is a constitutional and strategic choice, not a popularity contest.

“Assuming, but not conceding that Wike had 13 votes and Okowa had 2 — just like universities confer degrees “in learning and in character” — one must ask: what is the worth of votes if character scores a zero?

“Leadership is not only about numbers; it is about temperament, dignity, and the ability to unify.

“A man may boast of numbers, but if his conduct lacks grace and humility, those numbers are empty.

“We make no apologies for choosing Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa as the running mate in 2023. That decision was based on a combination of intellect, composure and statesmanship.

“We have been vindicated by Mr. Wike’s public conduct in Rivers State where he once served as governor and in Abuja since becoming FCT Minister, which has made it abundantly clear why he was unsuitable for the role of Vice President in a ticket meant to unify, not divide.

“We urge Mr. Wike and his social media spokesperson to resist the temptation to sermonise about religious piety during Ramadan and Lent, too, while simultaneously fanning the flames of discord.

“Let us not reduce sacred periods to a tool for petty political jabs.

“The task of rebuilding our party and our nation is a serious one. It is time to move beyond bruised egos and focus on what truly matters: the future of Nigeria and the wellbeing of its people!”
