Ijaws sad over Wike, Fubara rift in Rivers, says INC

The President, Ijaw National Congress (INC), Prof. Benjamin Okaba, has lamented the rift between Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara, and his predecessor, Chief Nyesom Wike, now the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory.

Okaba also said the INC is only committed to ensuring peace, unity and development in the entire Ijaw nation including Rivers.

The INC boss spoke yesterday when Rivers Ijaw People’s Congress (RIPCO) led a delegation of its leaders to hold a crucial meeting with the INC leadership at Ijaw House in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State.

The crucial meeting on the political developments in Rivers also had in attendance leaders of the Ijaw umbrella youth body, the Ijaw Youth Council (IYC).

Okaba said the INC would work closely with any organisation that would benefit the Ijaw nation, describing Ijaw interest as paramount.

He said the INC was not happy that the Ijaw people were divided over the political crisis in Rivers, insisting that Ijaws could be strong even in diversity of political affiliations.

Okaba said: “We will support any group that will benefit Ijaw people. In the same manner, we are going to fight any group that is against the progress of Ijaw Nation.

“Ijaw Nation is grateful to Wike for working for an Ijaw man to lead Rivers State. We don’t hate him.

“We also recall the efforts of Ijaw people in Wike’s political journey, especially his emergence as governor.

“There was a time INC spokesman responded to a northern group that lambasted Wike. We said we cannot allow people to attack any Niger Delta leader for no just cause while we are here. The mandate of INC is to protect the interest of Ijaw people. And it will remain so.

“We must come together because our unity is our strength. I believe we can be strong even in diversity. But let’s not fight ourselves.

“You are free to be loyal to Wike since he has been good to you. Ijaw people are very grateful people. We have been helped and we are also helping.

“However, let’s not in any way frustrate Sim Fubara. He is the undisputed Governor of Rivers State.

“So while we are calling for peace and appreciating the godfather (Wike) who brought him, the governor deserves our respect. You have to protect him because he is our son.”

The Professor of Sociology warned that the Rivers political feud could worsen if not properly managed.

Earlier, the Leaders of the RIPCO delegation, Senator Alabo George Sekibo and Hon. Boma Iyaye said there was a need for the INC to maintain neutrality in the ongoing political crisis in Rivers.

They told the INC that the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Abuja, Chief Nyesom Wike, had demonstrated his love for the Ijaw nation contrary to claims in some quarters arising from the political crisis rocking Rivers State.

They said the narrative that Wike hated the Ijaws was not true, noting that out of his love, Wike gave more federal appointments he attracted to Rivers to Ijaw leaders and recalled that during his administration as the governor, he appointed Ijaw people into strategic positions.

Specifically, Sekibo said though the state Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara had problems with his benefactor, Wike, the governor had not told Ijaw nation the reasons for their feud.

He said Rivers Ijaw People’s Congress was interested in the unity amongst Ijaw people and rancour-free collaborations with other ethnic nationalities in the state.

Sekibo emphasised that without the cooperation of other ethnic groups in the state, the Ijaw, as a minority group in Rivers, would not win elections in the state.

Reps to investigate 2023 FCT land allocation before Wike

The House of Representatives on Thursday, June 6, resolved to investigate all land allocations made in the name of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory between January 2023 and August 2023, particularly during the period when there was no sitting minister.

The House directed its Committee on FCT to identify all such lands, especially those currently involved in litigation or multiple allocations, and noted that the allocations have been withdrawn by the Minister pending the resolution of the matter.

This followed the adoption of a motion of urgent public importance sponsored by Hon. Jonathan Gaza Gbefwi (SDP, Nasarawa) who alleged that some plots of land were hurriedly allocated within the period there was. No sitting Minister in the FCT.

According to him, Section 297 of the 1999 Constitution states that ownership of all lands in the FCT. Abuja, is vested in the Government of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, while section 302 of the Constitution provides inter alia, that the President may, in the exercise of the powers conferred upon him by Section 147 of the Constitution, appoint for the FCT, Abuja, a Minister who shall exercise powers and perform such functions as may be delegated to him by the President, from time to time.

He noted that President Bola Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima were sworn in on Monday, May 29, 2023, marking the start of their four-year terms.

The current Minister of the FCT, Ezenwo Nyesom Wike, assumed office on August 21, 2023.

Gbewfi alleged that within the period between 29th May 2023-21st August 2023, several title documents on land in the FCT were issued to some real estate developers in a highly suspicious manner.

He wondered whether the Director of Lands or any official of the FCDA who issued R of Os, purportedly in the name of the Minister of FCT at the period when the office of the Minister was vacant, have the legal right or authority to do so:

He also alleged that some of the lands affected were subject to litigations which were yet to be resolved before the allocation, adding that some of the beneficiaries of these alleged fraudulent allocations are already using them to forcibly grab disputed land which is a recipe for conflicts.

He said if the title document of any land is fraudulently issued or procured, whatever is built on it should not stand in the interest of the public

Wike to FCT Civil Service: embrace digital transformation

…we have digital bio-data of over 30,000 staff of the FCTA – Chairman FCT-CSC

The minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has urged the FCT Civil Service Commission (CSC) to fully embrace digital transformation, as part of strategic imperatives to improve the civil service in the administration.

Wike said this at an ongoing three-day FCT-CSC retreat held at the Armed Officers’ Mess in Abuja with the theme “Building a 21st Century Civil Service Commission: The Role of the FCT Civil Service Commission”.

The minister represented by the pioneer Head of Civil Service of the FCT Civil Service, Samuel Atang, said the civil service must also prioritise continuous learning and professional development of staff, to equip workers with the latest knowledge.

He said the Commission was at the heart of ensuring a civil service that is effective, efficient, innovative, and responsive to the needs of the 21st Century, noting that the Commission must lead the way in implementing e-governance solutions and enhanced service delivery through technology.

“The FCT Civil Service Commission is at the heart of our efforts to ensure that our civil service is not only effective and efficient but also innovative, adaptive, and responsive to the needs of the 21st Century.

“The digital revolution is reshaping every aspect of our lives, and the public sector is no exception. To build a 21st-century civil service, we must fully embrace digital transformation. This means investing in cutting-edge technologies, developing digital skills among our workforce, and fostering a culture of innovation. The Commission must lead the way in implementing e-governance solutions, streaming processes, and enhancing service delivery through technology.

“The landscape of public service is constantly evolving, and so must our skills and knowledge. We must prioritize continuous learning and professional development for our staff. This entails regular programs, workshops, and opportunities for higher education”, Wike said.

In his address, the Chairman of the FCT-CSC, Emeka Ezeh, appreciated President Bola Tinubu and the FCT Minister, for the establishment of the civil service in the FCT, as part of the Renewed Hope Agenda of the administration.

He highlighted challenges that may be faced by the CSC, especially from disgruntled illegal workers, and those who did not favour the progress of the FCT civil service, adding however that the Commission will carry out its responsibilities “without fear or favour.”

He said: “We are not unmindful of the fact that a new body like the FCT Civil Service Commission will naturally be met with some apprehension by those who are not too sure yet of the responsibilities of the commission. We expect to see those who found their way into the FCT public service illegally mount a campaign of calumny against the Commission, and even against the FCT administration. These are normal in a setup like this.

“I want to use this opportunity to assure Mr President and the Honourable Minister of the FCT, our boss, and the Minister of State, that the Commission is committed to discharging its responsibilities without fear or favour. We will not be deterred by those who may feel threatened by the Commission”.

The chairman also disclosed that the Commission had gotten the digital bio-data of over 30,000 staff of the FCTA, through its “full-fledged ICT Department”, approved by the FCT Minister, which was now awaiting analysis, as a highlight of the CSC’s adoption of technology in the discharge of its duties.

  • Fubara: We will remain eternally grateful to Wike, says Rivers Ijaw

Fubara: We will remain eternally grateful to Wike, says Rivers Ijaw

Thousands of Ijaw people from Rivers State gathered for an extraordinary meeting over the weekend, expressing their eternal gratitude to FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike for his role in making Siminalayi Fubara the governor of the state.

The event, held in Port Harcourt under the auspices of the Rivers Ijaw Peoples’ Congress (RIPC), saw leaders, women, youths, and traditional rulers from all Ijaw-speaking local government areas in attendance.

Notable figures present included George Kelly Alabo, Boma Iyayi, Igbani Owaji, Prof. Zacchaeus Adangor, Prof. Henry Ogiri, Sampson Ngeribara, Major Jack, Amb. Dame Maurine Tamuno, Rufus Godwins, and Ojukaiye Flag Amachree.

Isobo Jack, Pleasant Briggs, chairmen of local government areas from some Ijaw councils; and some members of the House of Assembly from Ijaw constituencies among others.

In a communique read by Senator George Thompson Sekibo, the stakeholders said it was the first time in the past 24 years that there was a power shift to the Ijaws of Rivers, noting that the shift was made possible through the sponsorship and support of former Governor Wike.

Sekibo, who read to the cheering of the crowd, expressed sadness over the infusion of the false narrative of ethnic colouration into issues of disagreement between Fubara and Wike, his benefactor.

The stakeholders said the governor appeared to be whipping Ijaw ethnic sentiment as though there was a raging war between Ijaw and Minister Wike

Sekibo said: “Over the centuries, the Ijaw people have been historically known for their gratitude to their benefactors and this has not changed even in the present circumstances.

“We are not unaware of the political dissension in Rivers State and how some prominent Ijaw personalities have been made to join innocently to fuel the disagreement not minding the boomerang effect of such actions on the future of our children and generations to come.

“We, therefore, call on all well-meaning Ijaw leaders in Rivers State and other neighbouring states as well as in the diaspora to join efforts with the Rivers Ijaw Peoples’ Congress as we yearn for a continued and sustained development and growth of Rivers State, the foundation of which was laid by the previous administration.

“It is worthy of recalling that in his non-discriminatory and inclusive leadership style, the Honourable Minister of Federal Capital Territory has continued to show goodwill and live to the Ijaw nation as reflected in the appointments of illustrious Ijaw sons and daughters into positions of trust at the federal level.”

Sekibo named Ijaw leaders, whose appointments were facilitated by Wike as Chief Boma Iyayi, Executive Director, Finance and Administration, NDDC; Rufus Goodwins, Federal Commissioner, Federal Civil Service; Chief George-Kelly Alabo, Director-General, Border Communities Development Agency; Amb. Maureen Tamuno, Managing Director, Abuja Investment Company, and Prof. Henry Ogiri, Commissioner, National Population Commission.

He said: “The wrong notion that Ijaw people are in disagreement with other tribes or persons over the current political impasse poses a significant danger to our Ijaw communities and people particularly regarding peaceful coexistence among themselves and with other tribes and people.

“We, therefore, condemn all acts and utterances that are inimical to fostering unity among the Ijaw people and between Ijaws and other ethnic groups in Rivers State”.

Appreciating the fatherly intervention of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the Rivers crisis, the stakeholders said: “We sincerely and most humbly acknowledge the intervention of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. He has shown passion, interest, and fatherly care in the affairs of Rivers State.

“We are indebted to Mr. President and shall continue to support his Renewed Hope Agenda and further assure him of the safety of our national assets within the territory of Rivers State contrary to the reckless utterances of some misguided elements”.

Sekibo expressed gratitude to former President Goodluck Jonathan for recently demonstrating remarkable statesmanship and the true character of a genuine Ijaw leader in Rivers when he called for peace and mutual respect by all parties to the crisis

He said: “As a group we are not against an Ijaw son as governor of Rivers State as we were at the forefront of the clamour for an Ijaw son or daughter as governor of Rivers state. We worked assiduously and committed our time and resources to see the emergence of our son and brother, the current governor of Rivers.

“As a people, we continue to demonstrate our love and support for His Excellency, Nyesom Wike, the Minister of Federal Capital Territory whom we have always seen as our son, brother, leader, friend and lover of the Ijaw nation”.

He said while they hoped for peace and progress, all Ijaws must be circumspect in their utterances and actions and must not place greed and personal interest ahead of the collective interest of the ethnic nation.

Sekibo said while they were committed to the unity of Rivers and their brotherhood with other ethnic nationalities, their unalloyed support for Wike for his visionary, patriotic, inclusive and exemplary leadership remained intact.

Speaking at the occasion, a member of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Enemi Alabo George, said the Ijaws were not at war with anybody

George said: “The Ijaws are not at war with anyone. There is no division in the midst of the Rivers Ijaws. The event was to send a simple message to other tribes about wrong narratives that the Ijaw people of Rivers State were at war with other tribes.

“Ijaws shouldn’t be dragged into any form of discord and political misunderstanding between the Minister and one of his sons Governor Siminalayi Fubara. The Ijaws are peaceful and grateful people. We urge other tribes in Rivers State to join us in appreciating the former and Minister Nyesom Wike for giving the Ijaw son a chance to govern the people.”

One score card: North’s forum scores Wike, Audu, Umahi, Ojo high

In its assessment of President Bola Tinubu’s cabinet members after one year in office, the Concerned Northern Forum (CNF) has praised the Minister of Steel Development and his counterparts in the Federal Capital Territory, Works, and Interior ministries for their commitment to the President’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

The Forum, which includes over 73 civil society organizations focused on the development of Northern Nigeria, is a prominent CSO.

Speaking at a press conference at Arewa House in Kaduna on Sunday, the Forum’s national vice chairman, Comrade Muhammad Aminu Abbas, congratulated President Tinubu on his impactful first year in office and commended his hardworking ministers, whose performance has inspired hope for a better Nigeria.

He said: “Today, we are gathered to celebrate and congratulate President Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR on his impactful one year in office and also to run a scorecard on some performing Ministers towards decorating the most outstanding stewards in the current cabinet who have flown high the banner of Mr. President’s Renewed Hope Agenda. This is our modest way of encouraging Nigerians to imbibe the virtue of hard work and excellence.

“Having done our due diligence and evaluated all the Ministers under the administration in the period under review, we have identified true patriots who have served President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and indeed Nigerians as excellent Ministers and worthy ambassadors of the Federal Executive Council (FEC). Based on our scorecard, the following Ministers have made it on our elite list of top performers.

“The Ministers are; H.E. Nyesom Wike, who as the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory has revolutionized the provision of infrastructure and land administration in the FCT within a short period of time in office.

“Equally deserving of accolades is H.E. Engr. Dave Umahi, Minister of Works whose giant strides in road construction including the legacy Lagos to Calabar coastal highway and Badagry to Sokoto highway as well as the ingenious use of cement for construction has drastically cut down the cost of road construction and reduced pressure on our foreign exchange.

“Another top performer deserving of mention is Hon. Bunmi T. Ojo, whose Interior Ministry employed innovative technology and cost saving means to clear the backlog of passport application, ushering in an era of instant passport application and collection.

The Coalition’s spotlight was however, on the Minister of Steel Development, Hon. Prince Shuaibu Audu whom they described as “a youth like us, a rare breed who has demonstrated enormous capacity in the Ministry of Steel Development and has more than all the other Ministers pioneered policies and projects which have the potential for the industrialization and rapid economic development of the nation”.

While appreciating President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for deploying technical parameters to measure the performance of all ministries using key indicators, an initiative championed by the office of Hadiza Bala Usman, the Coalition maintained that even though Government has done well, the people who are direct beneficiaries of these policies are equally in a position to give their perspective on the performance of Ministers and their ministries and hence their spotlight of the Honourable Minister of Steel Development.

“It is on this note that we have decided pick Hon. Prince Shuaibu Audu as our star performer amongst all the Ministers and to make our position known on the historic developments in the steel sector within the last one year and also bear witness to the fact that the Minister has performed excellently well and even beyond the expectations of Nigerians as he strives to revive the hitherto moribund steel sector including the comatose Ajaokuta Steel Complex.

“In line with the vision and blueprint of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR who is determined to stir Nigeria on the path of economic recovery and growth, the Minister has already taken steps to explore the possibility of securing up to $5 million funding from the World Bank to finance the 10-year roadmap for the steel and metals sector. This creative solutions gives hope to a sector that was unproductive due to negligence and lack of credible administrators and technocrats.

“Already, talks have been completed with Russia’s TyazhPromExport (TPE) Consortium, the original equipment manufacturers and developers of the Ajaokuta Steel Company Limited (ASCL) with a view to exploring options available for reviving the company. This collaboration and partnership equally is also likely to attract an additional $2 billion for the revamping of Ajaokuta Steel Company. The Honorable Minister is also at the concluding stages of raising ₦35 billion (over $25 million) from local financiers for the revival of the Light Steel Mill (LSM) at Ajaokuta”.

The Forum also said: “Plans towards the establishment of a Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) park at the Ajaokuta Steel Complex in order to tap into the ₦100 billion fund set-up by the federal government, as a major step to bringing back to life, the economically viable industry as well as the reviving of steel facilities and research centres in Jos, Plateau State and the National Steel Raw Materials Agency, Kaduna.

“As critical stakeholders who are actively involved in the political and social development of our communities, we have great confidence in this administration’s capacity to create jobs and end youth unemployment,” the Forum leader said.

Ministers yesterday gave accounts of their stewardship since their assumption of office on August 21, 2023.

The ministerial scorecard sessions started on Wednesday with the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) George Akume giving an overview of the Administration’s performance and plans.

With him were Minister for Budget and National Planning Atiku Bagudu and host minister Muhammed Idris who is in charge of Information and National Orientation.

Yesterday was the turn of Minister of Defence Mohammed Badaru, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Nyesom Ezenwo Wike, Minister of Solid Minerals and eminent journalist Dele Alake, Minister of Steel Development Shuaibu Audu, Minister of Youth Development Jamila Bio-Ibrahim and Minister of State (Petroleum) Heineken Lokpobiri

Badaru said the military has neutralised 9,303 terrorists, bandits and criminals within one year of the Bola Ahmed Tinubu Administration.

He said about 6,998 terror suspects were arrested, 4,641 hostages rescued and 9,562 Boko Haram /ISWAP  fighters and their families surrendered.

According to him, 20 bandits and terrorist commanders were neutralised in the first quarter of this year.

Badaru listed the weapons recovered from bandits and terrorists as 61 HH Radio, 223 vehicles, 365 motorcycles and 551 mobile phones.

Wike said his ministry constructed about 120-kilometre roads in the six area councils to help tackle banditry. The roads will be inaugurated on Monday.

The minister also highlighted the establishment of the FCT service commission, the women’s secretariat, and the FCTA’s exit from the Treasury Single Account (TSA).

Badaru and Wike spoke during their presentations at the ministerial sectoral updates.

Apart from the rescue of 245 kidnapped victims, the Defence Minister said troops have denied the oil thieves of N91,247,052,565.

He confirmed the seizure of 92,547,601,541 litres of stolen crude oil, 61,469,999 litres of illegally refined AGO (diesel), 3, 920,549 litres of DPK (kerosene) and 3,303,040 litres of PMS (petrol).

Badaru said the number of arrested vessels by the Nigerian Navy has declined from 35 in 2020 to two in 2023 because of enhanced maritime security.

He said the Kaduna-Abuja Highway is now safer.

The minister confirmed the reopening of some roads closed due to insecurity, especially the Maiduguri-Bama-Gwoza-Mubi road and the Maiduguri-Monguno-Baga road.

He asked bandits and terrorists to surrender or be smoked out.

Badaru said: “From Jun 2023 – May 2024, our military troops neutralised 9,303 terrorists/criminals arrested 6,998 and rescued 4,641 hostages. Meanwhile, 9,562 BH/ISWAP terrorist combatant fighters and their families surrendered.

“We have neutralised no fewer than 20 commanders that commanded armies of bandits and terrorists.

‘When are you going to end this thing?’

“The instruction from the President is: ‘When are you going to end this thing?’ Those that refused to surrender, we will fight them and fight them hard.”

Badaru said the Tinubu Administration was determined to clear the nation’s highways of criminals.

Free ride for two months on Abuja train

Wike, in addition to the 120-kilometre roads in the six area councils, said the Federal Government will offer two-month free ride services to passengers on the Abuja Light rail after its inauguration on Monday.

He said President Tinubu would inaugurate the rail project, and it would start commercial services on Tuesday.

“We’ll inaugurate commercial operations on Monday. If you are going to the airport, it takes 20 minutes. Seeing is believing. Go on Tuesday. We are going to allow for free rides for two months.

“Mr. President can even say: ‘Extend it to six months just to reduce the pain of our people.’ That is a renewed hope agenda. When you say something, you do it.

“The last administration awarded $128 million contract for 29 months for the CCECC to train our people on the operations of that metro line. When I came on board, I said we cannot do that and as I speak to you, we have reduced that to $75million, saving the government $53 million,” the minister said.

Wike called on the National Assembly to review the law against vandalism in the nation’s capital.

The minister noted that the extant law against vandalism in the FCT, which prescribes N10,000 fine on conviction, is not punitive enough.

He said: “For example, today you put streetlights, tomorrow night, it is no longer there. What happened? They have vandalised them. They cut off the cables. You arrest them for prosecution, and what does the law say on conviction – N10,000. So, they continue with the act.

“We have told the National Assembly that they must come to our aid by amending and reviewing the law to make it very tough to discourage vandals from vandalising our infrastructures.”

Wike said the FCT administration would build 10,000 affordable houses to be named “Renewed Hope City,” for the poor and the vulnerable.

Mining has yielded N16 billion, says Alake

Noting that diversification has yielded fruits, Alake said Federal Government had realised over N16 billion in the last year from mining royalties and fees.

He said the N10,566,635,560.24 target was surpassed by a surplus of N6,746,317,807.09.

Alake said the ministry generated N14,938,164,335.43 in December last year, representing 72.1 per cent positive variance and 172.1 per cent performance when compared with the annual budgetary target of N8,680,197,621.00 for 2023.

The minister noted that the vision to diversify the mono-economic status of the country through the development of the solid minerals sector has yielded positive results.

He said the ministry in the last year has recorded impactful achievements in line with the Renewed Hope Manifesto of the President.

Alake said in repositioning the sector, deliberate efforts were made to ensure that required legislation was in place.

He said the ministry, after a comprehensive review of the industry and the implementation of the existing roadmap, developed a strategic trajectory for the resurgence of the sector to resume its role in capital formation and wealth generation.

He said the initiative led to the formulation and adoption of a seven-point agenda for the sector in September.

The minister recalled that the ministry initiated the necessary legislative framework for the establishment of the Nigerian Solid Minerals Development Corporation (NSMDC).

He said the vision manifested in the supervision of two key agencies of the ministry –  the Mining Cadastral Office (MCO) and the Solid Minerals Development Fund (SMDF).

Ajaokuta: Fed Govt secures return of original builders

According to Audu, the Federal Government has secured the return of the original builders of Ajaokuta Steel Mill.

He said: “We have initiated discussion with the original builders of the steel plant to come back to complete the job. To complete that, we need about $2 billion based on estimates.

“The original builder has shown willingness and desire to help us complete the project bringing in the funding and using a structure that will be acceptable.”

He also said that reserve bidders from Nigeria,  China, and India are waiting in the wings.

Audu said that a local financial institution has given the ministry a final offer for the N35 billion needed to re-energise the steel complex.

“I have done a cover letter and forwarded the relevant documents to the Minister of Finance to be able to take the financing on behalf of the Federal Government,” he said.

He explained that the facility had the capacity of producing 400,000 metric tonnes of iron rods per annum, and was critical in shoring up industrialisation in the country.

According to him, he is working closely with the Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, to supply the iron rods needed for road construction projects from the section.

“There are so many roads being constructed, about 30,000km of roads across the six geo-political zones.

“We understand that the Ministry of Works needs about seven million metric tonnes of iron rods over that four-year period (first term) to construct these roads, Ajaokuta can produce 400,000 tonnes,” he said.

Audu added that advanced discussions were held with the Minister of Defence, who is in charge of the Defence Industries Corporation of Nigeria (DICON), to revive its engineering workshop to produce military hardware to enhance security.

“So what is required is that we have a Metallurgical Development Centre that has the ability to provide us with the lead and zinc required, to be able to provide and produce some of these military hardware,” he said.

The minister assured that the steel sector would “play an important role in ensuring that one trillion by the end of the first term of this administration” was achieved.

“The steel sector is very critical for the Renewed Hope agenda of Mr President whose desire is to grow the economy of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to over one trillion by the end of the first term of this administration, thereby making us a G20 economy,” he noted.

Disbursement of N110bn capital to  youth entrepreneurs begins soon

The disbursement of N110 billion capital to start-ups and growing business concerns will begin in the “coming weeks,” Bio-Ibrahim announced yesterday during the ministerial briefing.

Bio–Ibrahim also said that six youth entrepreneurship clusters are to be activated in the “’coming weeks” to empower 50,000 entrepreneurs, thereby  “creating up to 500,000 direct jobs and over two million indirect engagements for young Nigerians.”

The  N110 billion, which is meant to energise the National Youth Investment Fund (NYIF) this year, was approved by the Federal Executive Council (FEC).

The minister said: “The council also approved the establishment of the presidential initiative for youth enterprise clusters. The cluster initiatives have proven to be successful when you’re inquiring and with high impact.”

Bio – Ibrahim added that a NextGen Bank has been established in partnership with the Bank of Industry to nurture youth entrepreneurs with loans and business support.

“We will operationalise the NextGen Bank by August 2024 to provide enough financial services to youth ventures and implement NYSC reforms to integrate skills development and entrepreneurship in the service here to scale up the National Youth Skills programme to train more young Nigerians,’’ the minister said.

She also announced the establishment of a committee to drive comparative reforms and economically beneficial programmes for young graduates.

The minister emphasised the commencement of robust NYSC reforms, including skills building to better position Youth Corps members.

“Through the National Youth Skills programme, we have initiated, we intend to train 300,000  corps members and 700,000 young people outside the NYSC scheme,” she added.

‘Oil firms that left are returning’

Lokpobiri said some oil and gas companies were returning to Nigeria with about $16.5 billion in investment and asset acquisition.

He also said one of the firms would be coming with $10billion investment in deep offshore, the second company with $5billion and the third with $1.6billion.

The minister said the Federal Government’s projection is to earn $20billion  from the sector this year.

He said the investors, who left the country, have decided to retrace their steps to Nigeria because the oil and gas business environment is now predictive.

Lokpobiri said: “We are already bringing back investors’ confidence in this our administration. We have done what a government is expected to do to attract investment.

“Somebody was asking me if Total announced $6billion of proposed investments in Angola.

“But there is a company that will in the next few weeks announce a $10 billion investment in deep offshore.

“They are in town waiting for me. These were companies that left Nigeria because they believed there were inconsistent policies, and the atmosphere wasn’t favorable.

“But following this administration’s policy of deliberately creating an environment that is predictive globally, they are all coming back. Another company will invest about $5billion, and $1.6billiin investment commitment in oil and gas asset acquisition.”

The minister rejected the claim that Angola is now the leading oil producer in Africa, insisting that Nigeria is the continental giant in the industry.

Lokpobiri said: “Angola cannot be compared to Nigeria. In Africa, Nigeria is the leading oil and gas producer and we are still dominating that position.”

On $20billion investment target, he said: “Our target in this 2024, having worked very hard to create the enabling environment, is to ensure that we have a minimum of $20billion investment this year.

“The only way you can sustain an increase in production and generate money that the government needs to finance our economic programmes is the oil and gas sector. The quickest way to economic prosperity is the oil and gas sector. Every country that has oil prioritises investment and Nigeria can never be an exception.”

The minister also explained that Schlumberger has retraced its steps to the Nigerian petroleum industry.

He said the firm has returned to a drilling project of 100 oil wells, which will attract billions of dollars.

    Govt information portal re-launched

Idris re-launched the Nigerian National Information Portal as the official digital gateway to comprehensive information about Nigeria.

It was done at the commencement of the ministerial sectoral briefings.

Idris said: “We use this opportunity to launch the Nigerian National Information Portal. Of course, it was in existence before but it has been so badly managed that the Federal Ministry of Information and National Orientation has resuscitated this new portal.

“It is a gateway to all the information you require to know about this government; about Nigeria, people, and our cultures. So, join me in clapping for Nigeria for having this re-launched new National Information Portal.”

The link to the portal is www.nigeria.gov.ng.

Idris said the President has started laying a solid and enduring foundation that will make life better for the people of Nigeria.

He said: “Landmark initiatives like the Consumer Credit Corporation, the Nigeria Education Loan Fund, Presidential Initiative on Compressed Natural Gas, the N200 Billion Presidential Grant and Loan Scheme, our agriculture and food security efforts (including the launch of Dry Season Farming, and massive fertilizer distribution), the Renewed Hope Infrastructure Development Fund(RHIDF), Renewed Hope Cities and Estates programme, our reform efforts in the Electricity Sector, and in the area of Taxes and Fiscal Policy, and the negotiations for a befitting new National Minimum Wage – are some of the many policies and programs that will directly touch and improve the lives and livelihoods of tens of millions of Nigerians.”

FCT residents can now sleep with their two eyes closed – Wike

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Mr Nyesom Wike says with improved security, residents of the territory “can now sleep with their two eyes closed”.

Wike gave the assurance in Abuja on Thursday, during the Ministerial Sectoral Update on the performance of President Bola Tinubu’s administration in the last one year.

He said the Tinubu-led administration had provided security agencies with all the logistics they required to equip them to do their job.

He added that the FCT Administration had equally provided specialised motorcycles to enable security agencies to navigate difficult terrain in rural communities to improve security.

Wike said that it used to take up to two weeks for security agencies to access the funds they needed to carry out security operations.

“But now, it is different. The money they need for their operations is readily made available. We have provided logistics, vehicles, name them, for the security agencies.

“We cannot say we have gotten it 100 per cent right, because no society is free of crime.

“But are there differences? Certainly yes, and you can attest to the fact that, it is no longer what it used to be.

“This government is doing everything humanly possible, to see that we reduce the level of insecurity in FCT,” he said.

Wike added that the FCT Administration had equally concluded plans to construct three taxi and bus terminals.

He said that the project, which would be concluded in the next eight months, would reduce kidnapping and the operation of “once chance” syndicates within the city.

“In Abuja, you don’t know which one is a taxi; you don’t know which one is a commercial bus.

“With the terminals, if you want to board a bus or a taxi, you will know a particular place to go and you will be free from these criminal elements,” he said

Wike stressed that the terminals would reduce incidences of kidnapping and “one chance” in the FCT.

Wike directs immediate reconstruction of Dogon Gada bridge

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Mr Nyesom Wike, has given a matching order for the immediate reconstruction of Dogon Gada box culvert in Lokogoma village, Abuja.

Mr Felix Obuah, the Coordinator, Abuja Metropolitan Management Council (AMMC), made this known in Abuja on Tuesday, during the 2024 Flood Risk Assessment and Community Awareness Campaign.

The campaign was organised by the FCT Emergency Management Department in collaboration with emergency management stakeholders.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the culvert was on the access road that linked over 3,000 residents of Lokogoma village, popularly known as Dogon Gada community to Ring Road II.

The FCT Emergency Management Department had on April 7, barricaded the box culvert, which had collapsed, to avert loss of lives.

The community loses their loved ones to flooding while trying to cross the culvert during the rainy season, due to its low elevation and prone to flooding.

Obuah said that the construction of the bridge would commence immediately after the engineering department concluded their structural designs and other technical requirements.

He assured the community that FEMD was taking necessary action to ensure that no life was lost to flooding in FCT throughout the 2024 rainy season.

“The minister has given a matching order that the construction of the bride should commence with immediate effect.

“As I speak to you, any moment from now work will commence. The engineering process has begun already for the speedy construction of the bridge,” he said.

The coordinator pointed out that human action has an impact on the environment, exposing it to varying degrees of flood risk.

He explained that the exercise was a preparedness and awareness campaign to sensitise residents against actions that would predispose communities to flood.

“I assured FCT residents that with the proactive measure being taken by FEMD and other stakeholders, no life will be lost in 2024 to flooding in 2024.

“We must, therefore, continue to strengthen our collaboration towards flood prevention and mitigation,” Obuah said.

Earlier, acting Director-General, FEMD, Mr Mohammed Sabo, said that the flood risk assessment and awareness campaign was part of strategies to strengthen disaster risk reduction.

Sabo said that other flood prone communities would also be sensitised to mobilise residents to take proactive steps towards preventing loss of lives to flood.

He added that the flood risk assessment would enable FEMD to assess interventions that worked and areas that need additional interventions to prevent flooding.

Also, Mr Florence Wenegieme, Director, Forecasting, Response and Mitigation, said that the bridge had taken many lives over the years during the rainy season.

Wenegiene explained that the people were killed by the flood because they tried to cross the flooded bridge against warnings by FEMD and local divers stationed at the bridge.

Mr Christopher Maikalangu, Chairman, Abuja Municipal Area Council, thanked Wike for the prompt intervention to prevent more people from dying from flooding along the bridge.

He said that the distance from the community to Ring Road II was 800 metres, but the residents had to travel five to six kilometres through alternative routes to get to the ring road.

The leader of the community, Mr Irimiya Kanpani, who could not hide his excitement over the minister’s approval for the recommendation of the collapsed bridge described it as a huge relief,

“Now I can go to sleep knowing that the minister will fulfil his promise and my people will be safe. All I can say is thank you,” he said.
