  • Wike’s leadership model

    Wike’s leadership model

SIR: Sometimes, we Africans because of selfishness and ego find it difficult to give honour to whom it is due. What further contributes to this mind-set is the erroneous thinking that leaders should always be criticized and not eulogized. It is only when they are dead that people begin to notice their positive qualities and then start organizing memorial lectures in their honour or award them with posthumous honours.
Whether we are ready to say the truth or not, it is clear that in Abuja there is a new sheriff in town. Even from casual observation, one can easily notice positive leadership trait in the incumbent minister of FCT Abuja, Barrister Nyesom Wike. Since his assumption into office, Wike has continued to disappoint his detractors. Those who before thought he is a local champion who cannot replicate his Rivers magic in Abuja are now shifting ground.
How I wish all Tinubu’s ministers will be like Wike! This is because Wike is conscious of time constraint and he is doing everything possible to leverage the little time he has to make maximum impact.
Nigeria needs a leader who possesses sense of urgency, who understands that time flies. Procrastination is dangerous and any leader who wants to succeed must avoid this plague.
Another good quality of Wike is he can work amidst distractions. Not many people can focus when they have to operate in the face of distractions and enormous pressures from all quarters. Imagine a former governor who faces betrayal from his protégés back home. While living in Abuja, people he groomed have become his bitter enemies, and doing everything possible to destroy him.
Plus here in Abuja, many people who cannot get any personal favour from him have joined his traducers. Yet with all these distractions, Wike has not lost his head.
Looking at the projects he either executed or completed in one year and the ongoing ones show that this is a great man.

Leadership requires a courageous not a fearless person. Wike is both fearless and courageous. He has taken many actions that a lily-livered person cannot take. In fact, without this quality, he could not have issued stern warning to some untouchable contractors who had to return to sites to complete their projects. Many dishonest contractors that took Nigerians for granted in the previous administrations cannot dare approach Wike today because he has made it clear that he would not condone any shady deals. Wike is a micro-manager; Nigeria needs a leader who can micromanage because majority of Nigerians are looking for fast money and are therefore more comfortable with leaders who do not supervise and cross-check.
Wike understands the concept of communication in the leadership context and thus he is always in the spotlight making sure that Nigerians know what he is doing as minister. He carries the media along. Those ministers who are relegating the media are now paying the price. Nobody knows what they are up to.
Abuja under the last minister, Muhammad Bello deteriorated: Street lamps were inactive this provided cover for all sort of criminals to operate; manholes were stolen many people lost their lives by falling into pits; scavengers were erecting shanties even in the central districts with uncompleted buildings taken over by drug peddlers and other loiterers. Contractors collected mobilization fees and vanished. The city was rapidly becoming a typical capital of an underdeveloped country. It is this trend minister Nyesom Wike is trying to reverse.

Insecurity: Wike concludes plans to relocate Abuja mechanic village

…warns committee against allocating shops to girlfriends, relations

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike has concluded plans to relocate Abuja’s largest mechanic village, popularly called Apo Mechanic Village, to a permanent site, 25 years after the idea was first muted by the FCT Administration.

This was as he dismissed speculations that the administration had given a deadline for occupiers of the mechanic village to move out or risk demolition, saying there was no such directive.

He also warned officials against nepotism in the allocation of shops.

The move would see thousands of auto technicians, spare parts dealers and other ancillary service providers being relocated from the current road corridor where they operate to a more expansive permanent site in the Wasa district, a 15-minute drive from their current location.

Inaugurating a 19-member technical committee on the relocation of auto technicians from Apo to Wasa, the minister who was represented by the Coordinator, Abuja Metropolitan Management Agency (AMMC), Chief Felix Obuah said for years the technicians had lost hope and were afraid that the place could be demolished at any time.

He said rather than embarking on any demolition, the Wike-led Administration has decided to first provide a better alternative and ensure an orderly migration before demolition of the current site to pave the way for the expansion of the roads.

Obuah said: “You will recall that two weeks ago, we had a meeting to see how we could relocate the Apo mechanic who had been operating on the right of way.

“We have set up a technical committee to go into Wasa and Apo to enumerate who and who we are relocating. This is what we have done today, at the end of that we will be able to give an accurate time when we are going to relocate them.

“I have handed over some of the things they need, most of these people are still coming even as of now. When you think you have finished, others are coming they have over twenty, thirty thousand people and we have to be sure that this number they are brandishing exists. We have to verify and open a database to make sure that everybody we are allocating is actually on the road corridor.

“We are not doing this as a bazaar so that those who have lost hope that do not have anywhere to trade at the road corridor, right of way, we are now relocating them to a permanent place, removed from the road corridor.

“It is the hope that was lost that Mr President through the Minister has restored but I am assuring you this thing will not take more than three months for all these things to be done. It has to do with technical, engineering, allocation, and resettlement so it is not a day’s work. We have to build a prototype that other people can also follow up. It is not an easy thing.

“We want to make sure that Abuja wears its status as the capital of Nigeria and so the Minister gave approval that those occupying the right of way should leave so that construction can start in that area

“As a man who has human feelings, he felt that there is no need moving in to chase the people without providing an alternative. It was on that note that a better place that take care of this set of people was provided in Wasa.

“In making sure that we relocate all of them, we invited them for a meeting and let them know our intentions. We cannot do that without also bringing the relevant teams who will help us to achieve this to make sure that there is no problem.

“That is why we have decided to inaugurate a technical committee that will see to the efficient relocation of these people. That is why we have invited all the technical teams so that by the time we start, we will be able to handle any challenge that may arise.

“We are inaugurating a 19-member technical team drawn from Development Control, Abuja Environment Protection Board AEPB and Urban Affairs. Others are Resettlement and Compensation, General Counsel and Legal Services; Lands; Urban and Regional Planning, Mapping and Surveying, Finance and Administration, and Directorate of Road Traffic Services DRTS/VIO among others.

“The shops are not to be allocated to our girlfriends, our uncles, our sisters or relations. That is why the first term of reference is the enumeration of eligible persons.

“We will do our best to ensure that the people are not shortchanged. We will develop a database for all the technicians and dealers there.

“Some people said we have given a deadline for the traders to go away. That is not true. We haven’t given such a deadline”, he added.

According to Obuah, the committee is to conduct an enumeration of eligible Auto Mechanic-technicians/Dealers for possible Relocation to Wasa; Immediate preparation of the Relocation Site; Expeditious handling of compensation matters; Establishment of Demarcations/boundaries of the site; Identify Areas of Integration where necessary; and, Review of the Layout.

The chairman of the committee, Malam Abubakar Makama said the issue has been lingering for over 25 years without any solution and thanked the Coordinator for swinging into action within just three months in office.

Security is one of Tinubu’s key priorities, says Wike

…presents 50 operational vehicles to security agencies

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike on Friday, July 5, said that one of the key priorities of President Bola Tinubu is the security of lives and property.

Wike said any leader who cannot secure the lives and property of citizens has no business in governance.

The minister said this while presenting 50 operational vehicles fitted with communication gadgets to security agencies to strengthen and fight insecurity in the nation’s capital.

While handing over the vehicles to the agencies, the minister said the measure was to support security agencies with the needed logistics to enable them to combat crime without complaint.

The FCT Police Command got 24 vehicles, the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), eight, Advance Party/Security Monitoring, and FCT Administration 6 while the Department of State Services (DSS) got five.

Also, the Guard Brigade of the Nigerian Army received three vehicles while the Nigeria Air Force, 005, Abuja, Naval Unit, Nigerian Immigration Service, and National Drugs Law Enforcement Agency received one each.

Wike said: “We are no longer talking about infrastructure; we are no longer talking about taking development to the Area Councils; we are now talking about a key factor, a key agenda in the renewed hope mantra, and that has to do with security.

“We are not just concentrating on infrastructure; we are not only concentrating on bringing development to the hinterland; we are also concentrating on providing security in order to protect lives and properties.

“So, it is a priority for President Tinubu that Nigerians are secured, and who are those that are responsible? It is the security agencies.

“For us as a government, it is not the responsibility of Mr President to go and identify where the criminals are; it is not my responsibility or the minister of state’s responsibility to go and engage criminals. It is our responsibility to provide the tools for the security agencies to confront these criminals and make sure we sleep with our two eyes closed.

“If we do not play this role, it will be difficult for our security agencies to be effective and to be able to carry out this function of securing lives and properties.”

He urged residents to support and pray for security agencies, who sometimes lose their lives in the line of duty”.

The minister commended the security agencies for reducing the rate of crime in FCT and promised continued support by providing the tools needed to work for the interest of residents.

He urged the security agencies to use the vehicles for the benefit of the society and not for private use.

“It is not for you to use as private vehicles because it is air-conditioned, then you use it to carry your wives, instead of for the purpose it was meant for,” he said.

Wike had on April 16, donated 100 motorcycles to security agencies to combat crime in hard-to-reach communities.

Earlier, the Director of the FCT Security Services Department, Adamu Gwary, noted the rising concern on the security situation in and around the FCT.

He said that the operational vehicles would empower and enhance the capacity of security agencies to fight crimes and criminality, respond promptly to distress situations, and rise to the security challenges confronting the territory.

“However, crime prevention is the responsibility of all, and as such, all hands must remain on deck to ensure the safety and security of all,” he said.

Speaking on behalf of the security agencies, the Commissioner of Police, Benneth Igweh, FCT Command, thanked Wike for the continued support of security agencies in FCT.

Igweh, who was represented by the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Kayode Ojakinwa, assured that the security agencies would make the best use of the vehicles for the security of all.

Wike kicks-off reconstruction of 25km road in Kwali

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Nyesom Wike yesterday kicked off reconstruction of the 25km Kweita/Yebu road in the Kwali Area of Abuja.

Wike assured the people that President Bola Tinubu has come to restore their lost hope by bringing back confidence in the government. He also told them that the project would not be abandoned.

The minister, who said 50 per cent of the contract sum has been captured in the FCT 2024 budget, changed the project’s delivery time from 18 to 12 months. He asked if the contractor could deliver if more money was provided.

He added: “When the people are happy, the government is happy. You lost hope in the past, you didn’t believe that a government would come and work on the road. Mr. President said he has come to bring back hope. He has brought back hope.

“For us, it is a promise made and a promise kept, we will not abandon the road. We are not in the category of those who award contracts and don’t complete them. In this year’s budget, we’ve provided 50 per cent of the funds. Do not lose hope, by this time next year, by the grace of God, I will be here to open this road.”

The minister also assured that rural roads will be prioritized as city roads.

“What we are doing in the city, we must also do in the rural areas, after all, the people are in the rural areas; the votes come from the rural areas,” he noted.

He also praised former Senator representing the FCT, Philip Aduda, for remaining connected with the people and their hopes.

The Etsu Kwali, Luka Ayedoo Nizassan, noted that the Tinubu administration, through Nyesom Wike, has restored the hope of his people indeed.

The monarch recalled that the road was first awarded in 2015 and abandoned after three years, and rewarded in 2012 and abandoned again till Wike came into the scene.

According to him, the road, when completed, would link two area councils in Kwali to Abaji and Nasarawa State. He also noted that the road services a lot of farms where yams, cassava, bananas, plantains, beni seed and melon are supplied to the city.

  • Judgement throws Wike’s camp into jubilation

Judgement throws Wike’s camp into jubilation

The political camp of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Abuja was on Thursday thrown into jubilation following the judgement of the Appeal Court that returned Martins Amaewhule and 24 other lawmakers as Speaker and members of the Rivers State House of Assembly.

Supporters of the Minister were seen rolling out drums to celebrate the judgement and vibing to spontaneous songs of praise they composed for the Minister.

Some of the elected chairmen contesting tenure elongation were said to be particularly happy about the judgement as they believed that it had given them a lease of life.

The ousted Chairmen of Emohua and Ikwerre local government areas, Dr. Chidi Lloyd and Chief Samuel Nwanosike, said the judgement had invalidated every decision and approval Governor Siminialayi Fubara took relying on the Victor Oko-Jumbo-led lawmakers.

Lloyd, who commended the judiciary for upholding the constitution and deepening democracy with its ruling, said the judge at the lower court, who created the confusion should not be allowed to go free.

He argued that that order that stripped Amaewhule and 24 other lawmakers of their statuses was capable of creating anarchy and causing bloodshed in the state.

Lloyd said: “The issues are clear. We first give glory to God. We continue to have hope in the judiciary. The judiciary will continue to be the last hope of the common man.

“The laws are clear. It is not a respecter of anybody and it will not change because you are President or governor or chairman or senator. The law is clear. When once a court has no jurisdiction to hear a matter, everything it has done is null and void. That is what the court has said.

Read Also: Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC)

“The court has also affirmed the position of Martins Amaewhule, which was not disputed. Amaewhule has at all times remain the Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly.

“My only regret is that the judge who would have thrown this state into a state of anarchy should not be allowed to walk about freely because if anybody had died it would have been as a result of the decision of the judge.

“That is why people, who are called to the bench must be above board because they are playing the roles of God on earth and their functions must be discharged with a lot of caution. The judge has made people to think that they are Attorney-General, commissioners, speaker and caretaker committee members. The court has described all of that as exercise in futility”.

Lloyd observed that the judgement has far-reaching consequences on the the tenure elongation dispute, which he said remained a subject of litigation in many other suits.

He said he and his colleagues would not be in a hurry to take advantage of the judgement to return to their offices, until the court of appealed ruled on the specific matter.

Lloyd said: “This particular judgement has consequences on the tenure elongation of the chairmen. If it were the other way round, it means that all that Martins Amaewhule and his colleagues had done would have been null and void.

“But because the court had said that Martins Amaewhule is at all times the speaker, everything he had done including the amendment to the 2018 law stands. The issue of the tenure of local government chairmen is still subject of litigation at various levels of court. The hearing continues today at the court of appeal.

“The full decision of the court of appeal had not been seen. The issues of whether there was a House when the law was made and whether Amaewhule and his colleagues are still members of the House and can discharge the functions of the House have been resolved in the affirmative; that everything they have done is the law”.

On the police continuous occupation of the local government secretariats, Lloyd said: ” What the police do in the state of dispute is to ensure that lives and properties are safeguarded. The court has taken a decision on who the speaker is.

“It is just a little while the judgement on the other matter will be given. If Oko-Jumbo was not the speaker, everything he did including the screening of the purported caretaker committee members is null and void and of no effect.

*They should immediately stop parading themselves as local government chairmen. Even those commissioners screened by him and any approval made by him are all nullified. It has far-reaching consequences”.

On his part, Nwanosike appealed to the governor and his supporters to obey the judgement insisting that disobeying it would have serious consequences.

He said: “I thank the Almighty God for a day like this. It is obviously stated by the Lordship of the Court of Appeal that we run a constitutional democracy and our laws are sacrosanct. The laws are not ambiguous. They are self-explanatory.

“You can’t put something on nothing and expect it to stand. When the law comes illegality, noisemaking and ethnicity will give way. When the law comes those, who think that governance is a joke will soon realize that governance is a serious business.

“So, we thank our Lordship for strengthening the law and deepening the democracy we are practising. People should realize that it doesn’t have to do with your office. The constitution remains the grund norm. For those who the law did not favour today should understand that disobeying legitimate rules and orders of court has consequences and penalties in the future.

“We want to advise them to obey the law and allow the three arms and tiers of government to function in accordance with the law. The court of appeal voided everything they did from inauguration of Attorney-General, commissioners and caretaker committee chairmen.”

On whether they would return to their offices following the judgement, Nwanosike said: “The law is clear you can’t put something on nothing and expect it to stand.  The Martins Amaewhule-led House of Assembly is the authentic House of Assembly and the laws they make for Rivers State must be obeyed by everybody including the governor of Rivers.

“We want to hear from the Rivers State House of Assembly. They will give direction and we will obey them. We have other pending matters in court and we expect those rulings to come because we are law-abiding people”.

Though the state government was yet to officially react on the matter, supporters of the governor had given it a different interpretation saying it only asked the parties to return to the Federal High Court.

Kingibe, Yesufu’s attacks on Wike, attempt to discredit Tinubu – Arewa group

The Arewa Youths for Peaceful Coexistence, a northern youth group, has condemned the recent criticisms of FCT Minister Nyesom Wike by Senator Ireti Kingibe and Labour Party chieftain, Aisha Yesufu, calling it an attempt to discredit President Bola Tinubu.

The group urged Senator Kingibe, who represents the FCT in the National Assembly, and Aisha Yesufu to recognise that the election period is over and that it is now time for governance, not politics.

In a statement issued by the group’s national chairman, Hon. Haruna Bature, they warned both individuals against making uncomplimentary, discrediting, and derogatory remarks about the FCT Minister and, by extension, President Tinubu.

The statement: “The attention of Arewa Youths for Peaceful Coexistence has been drawn to a video clip circulating on social media by Aisha Yesufu, a Labour Party Activist and Member of Obi-Datti Fund Raising Team, attacking the Hon. Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (F.C.T.) for his political comments against the re-election of Sen. Ireti Kingibe.

“We wish to bring to the attention of the Public and all Residents of Abuja that the current entanglements were first howled and fuelled by the negative comments and criticisms targeted to discredit the efforts of the Administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu through the Office of the Minister of FCT.

“These comments in all ramifications lacked the traits of constructive engagement and criticism expected of the status and person of Sen. Ireti Kingibe.

“We also believe that the recent and sudden support and antagonisms by Aisha Yesufu a known card-carrying member of the Labour Party and Team Lead of Obi-Datti Campaign Organisation against the Person and Office of the Hon. Minister of F.C.T., Chief Barr. E.N. Wike points to the source and motive of these sinister and callous media campaigns.

“We are left with no option but to conclude that the comments and attacks by Sen. Ireti Kingibe are part of a grand plan to discredit the visible achievements of the Tinubu Administration in Abuja in slightly more than 1 year in Office and to make President Tinubu lose the confidence and trust of Abuja electorates come 2027.

“Clearly on the basis of these facts, no intelligent politician such as the Hon. Minister of the F.C.T., Chief Barr. E.N. Wike will miss these underlying currents and dangerous motives hence the Hon. Minister’s direct political response of ensuring Sen. Ireti Kingibe also does not return to the Senate come 2027.

“Aisha Yesufu of all people should know that this is time for governance to deliver the dividends of democracy to all Residents of Abuja and not time for politics. Aisha Yesufu and Senator Ireti Kingibe should therefore advise themselves against interfering with the process of governance with their uncomplimentary, discrediting, and derogatory remarks to frustrate or distract the Hon. Minister from his good works to Abuja Residents.

“The Arewa Youths for Peaceful Coexistence acknowledges and commends the monumental achievements and landmark changes happening in Abuja by the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu through the Office of the Hon. Minister of F.C.T., Chief Barr. E.N. Wike, CON,” it said.

Senate moves to reconcile Wike, Ireti Kingibe

The Senate yesterday held a private session to discuss a matter of ‘privilege’ involving the Senator representing the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Ireti Kingibe, and Minister of the FCT, Nyesom Wike.

Kingibe and Wike have been engaging each other in a public row.

Wike, on Monday, threatened that Kingibe would lose her return bid to the Senate in 2027, as far as he remained the minister of FCT. This followed the lawmaker’s complaints of being sidelined in the administration of the FCT.

Prior to when the Senate proceeded on its end of session break, Kingibe had raised a matter of privilege, seeking to know why the 2024 budget of the FCT was passed without any input from her.

Following the continued war of words, the Senate resolved into an executive session to look into the matter of privilege she had raised.

President of the Senate Godswill Akpabio, who presided over proceedings, called for the executive session, specifically saying it was to discuss a matter of privilege involving the FCT senator.

President of the Senate Godswill Akpabio yesterday praised President Bola Tinubu for supporting Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Nyesom Wike, to deliver.

According to him, this support has given Wike the confidence to restore Abuja to its original Master Plan

The Senate President said this when he kicked off construction of the Kugbo Bus Terminal in the FCT.

He said: “This is a significant milestone in our ongoing efforts to enhance the infrastructure and public transportation system of the capital city of our beloved country.

“The development of these bus terminals is more than just a construction project; it is a testament to the good works and commitment of President Bola Tinubu’s government to the progress and modernisation of Nigeria.

“This terminal will serve as a vital hub that will facilitate the efficient movement of people, reduce traffic congestion and improve the overall quality of life for residents and visitors alike in the city.

“The Kugbo Bus Terminal is designed to be state-of-the-art facility, equipped with modern amenities to ensure comfort, safety, and convenience for all users. It will provide a structured and organised environment for our public transportation system, promoting greater efficiency and reliability…”

Akpaio praised Wike for his remarkable strides in transforming Abuja into a modern city with efficient infrastructure, all within one year.

Wike thanked Akpabio for accepting to personally kick off the project. He also thanked Chairmen of the Senate and House Committee of FCT for their support through funding in the 2024 Appropriation Act.

He added: “This terminal is not only for those who can afford it, it is also for those who cannot afford it. When completed in the next 12 to 15 months, the safety of commuters will be highly guaranteed because it would end the incessant cases of ‘One Chance’ which has, in the last few months, led to the untimely death of many.”

Wike assured that the project would be completed and ready for use in record time, ‘as those who would be saddled with the running of the parks were already working and planning towards its take-off’.

“When completed, the terminal would be operated by a private body, not the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW). We will ensure that whatever is obtainable in developed countries in the sectors would be done here to enhance patronage and confidence,” he added.

Arewa youths tackle Senator Kingibe over attack on Wike

Arewa Youth for Peaceful Coexistence has tackled Senator Ireti Kingibe representing the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) for criticising the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike’s infrastructural development projects in Abuja.

The group in a statement by its national chairman, Hon. Haruna Bature said that Wike inherited a poor state of infrastructure, security, healthcare, human and vehicular traffic, sanitation, healthcare, and welfare of public sector workers in Abuja, saying that he has in one year corrected the wrongs.

While asking the Senator to focus her responsibilities as the elected representative of the people of FCT in the National Assembly, the Arewa group urged the Minister not to pay attention to narrow and skewed criticism, but to continue with the good works of implementing and promoting the Programmes of the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Tinubu.

According to the statement, “The attention of the Arewa Youth for Peaceful Coexistence has been drawn to a media interview on Arise TV granted by Sen. Ireti Kingibe condemning and casting negative aspersions on the infrastructural development efforts in the FCT by the Honourable Minister of the FCT, Chief Barr. E.N. Wike, CON, GSSRS.

“We wish to remind Sen. Minister of FCT, Chief Barr. E.N.Wike, CON, GSSRS.

“The story today is different except in the opinion of Sen. Ireti Kingibe because these challenges in the FCT either have been addressed or are being addressed by the Administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu through the Office of the Hon. Minister of the FCT, Chief Barr. Ezebuwon Nyesom Wike of which Sen. Ireti Kingibe is a major beneficiary as the Senator representing the FCT, Abuja.

“Development is a gradual process and we trust that the Economic Reforms, Fiscal and Monetary Policies, and Human Capital and Welfare Programmes of President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda will soon put hope and smiles on the faces of Nigerians and especially Residents of the FCT.

“The Arewa Youths for Peaceful Coexistence therefore wishes to urge, the Hon. Minister of FCT, Chief Barr. E.N. Wike did not pay any attention to the narrow and skewed criticism of Sen.
