Wike shuts down ICC for eight months over poor maintenance

Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike yesterday shut down the International Conference Centre (ICC) for eight months for lack of maintenance.

The minister, who announced this after inspecting the facility, cancelled all events and activities booked at the venue.

Expressing disappointment at the state of the facility during the inspection, Wike queried why the contract for the maintenance of such an edifice was handed over to what he called an incompetent company.

He announced that with immediate effect, the contract for the comprehensive renovation of the International Conference Center had been awarded to Julius Berger for a period of eight months.

The minister announced that the facility will be handed back to the Abuja Investment Company Limited after renovation.

Last week, Wike revoked the contract of the previous contractors, Messrs Integrated Facility Management Services Limited, and awarded the contract to Julius Berger Nigeria Plc for “the immediate comprehensive renovation” of the ICC.

He said: “It is very unfortunate. So many leaders meant well but those of us who have the opportunity to be among hide what will benefit at the end of the day and set back the whole essence of good leadership.

“I told you we came here for the ECOWAS inauguration last week with Mr. President. No right-thinking human being would like to see an international location of that nature and would see the state of this facility and be happy.”

I won’t disappoint you in FCT, Wike assures kinsmen

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory(FCT) Nyesom Wike has told his kinsmen that he will not disappoint them in his performance as a Minister.

Wike spoke at the weekend as a special guest of honour during the 2024 Annual Cultural Day of the Ogbako Ikwerre Organisation Worldwide, the apex socio-cultural group of Ikwerre ethnic nationality.

The Minister, who was represented by his former Chief of Staff, Emeka Woke, expressed gratitude to Ikwerre people for the support he enjoyed while he served as the state governor for eight years.

Wike recalled that the Ikwerre people benefited during his administration in the areas of appointments, infrastructures and in the  upgrade of their traditional chieftaincy stools.

The Minister affirmed that the organisation was instrumental in the 2023 general elections that brought the current administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to power.

He appealed  to the Ikwerre people to embrace unity and remain politically vigilant just as he called on other ethnic groups in the state to rally around Tinubu’s Renewed Hope agenda for the development of the state and country.

He said: “The Minister has asked me to inform his people that he will not disappoint them in the performance of his function as FCT Minister.

” The politics of 2023 was time for serious decision-making as it affected the nation and Rivers State. It was a very difficult time, giving the position of his party, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and its Presidential Candidate and the then Presidential Candidate of the All Progressive Congress(APC).

“He decided as an individual to support Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, realizing that he can not achieve this alone, he came back to his people given the numerical strength of Ikwerre ethnic nationality in Rivers State and in the politics of Nigeria, he sought the support of his people and they did not disappoint him and the result of that support is what we are benefiting today.”

In its remarks, the sociocultural organisation said it would continue to use the Ikwerre culture to unite and foster peace among the people.

The President of the Organisation, Eze Godspower Onuekwa, commended the leadership of Ikwerre for using culture to ensure peace and development in the state and country.

He said the celebration was used as a means to sustain, enhance the love  and showcase the cultural value of the Ikwerre people.

The coalition, which made their position known after touring some project sites in Abuja, insisted that Wike’s performance attracted them to support the President.

The statement said: “We are witnessing a sporadic transformation in the FCT as evident in the roads, streetlights, the bridges, the parks, as well as the dramatic twist of the gory security situation that was bedeviling the Federal Capital Territory before the arrival of Wike.

“In all sincerity, we are impressed with the precision and sterling leadership of Mr. President in the appointment of the Honourable Minister of the Federal Capital Territory FCT Chief Barr Nyesom Wike  aka Mr Projects.

“Wike has won our support because his policies are no respecter of class, ethnicity and or religion which is how it is supposed to be unlike before when policies were only made to favour the rich people.

“The low cost housing that will soon come into the budget is to favour those ordinary citizens. The coming of Wike has given us free access to the office of the minister to lay your complaints and get results.”

“The beautiful thing is that, the encomium showered on Wike as a result of his performance today is a credit to the All Progress Congress (APC) government and a proactive measure to reclaim FCT back to the APC in any polls

“We couldn’t have asked for a better Minister. Wike, indeed, has expended courage beyond words to have dismantled every iota of tribal and ethnic sentiment that had earlier thrived as a norm in the FCT.

Indeed, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has proven to be a Pan-Nigerian, a true Nationalist and a political strategist of no mean standing. He has proven to be a man of immense political sagacity, succeeding in truncating the instituted ethnic and political divide that was enthroned prior to his emergence.

On whether the rail lines would be extended to areas experiencing high traffic, the minister said: “I am not committing anything now, because we are taking everything step by step.

  • Fresh crisis brews in PDP over CTC list for Rivers

Fresh crisis brews in PDP over CTC list for Rivers

Fresh crisis is brewing in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) following the list of Caretaker Committee members it recently published to run the affairs of some States and local government areas.

It was gathered that the list for Rivers State was particularly generating controversies and deepening the already existing political crisis between the camps of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Abuja, Chief Nyesom Wike and the state Governor, Sir. Siminalayi Fubara.

Fubara on Thursday fumed over the list describing it as fake and insisting that it fell short of the agreement the PDP governors had with the party’s NWC.

It was gathered that shortly after Fubara ventilated his grievances over the list, he immediately stormed the Wadata Plaza, the PDP National Headquarters, on Thursday evening to consult with members of the NWC.

Fubara’s Chief Press Secretary (CPS), Nelson Chukwudi, confirmed the meeting between Fubara and some members of the NWC.

The Governor overnor was quoted as saying after the meeting that the NWC dismissed the list as fake and restated the resolutions of a meeting it held between them and the governors in March.

He said the main resolution of the March meeting was that after the expiration of the executive committees in various states, their members should transform into caretaker committees for the next three months without changing their compositions.

Fubara insisted that Rivers would abide by the decision that the executive officers whose tenures had expired in March should remain in their various capacities for the three months extension period approved by the NWC elapses to enable the conduct of fresh congresses.

He recalled that a letter signed by the National Organising Secretary, Umar M. Bature, dated Wednesday, March 27, 2024, addressed to the Chairman, Rivers State Caretaker Committee, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Aaron Chukwuemeka, contained such resolution.

He said the letter titled, “Approval of Wards, Local Government Area and State Caretaker Committee Members for Rivers State”, clearly resolved the issue of the authentic members of the caretaker committees at the affected levels.

The letter, was copied the Acting National Chairman, Amb. Umar Iliya Damagum; Deputy National Chairman, South, His Excellency, Amb. Taofeek Arapaja; the Executive Governor of Rivers State,  Sir. Siminalayi Fubara; National Secretary, Senator Samuel Anyanwu; and National Legal Adviser, Ajibade Kamaldeen Adeyemi, SAN.

He quoted the letter as saying:  “Following the expiration of the elected Ward, LGA, and State Executive Members in Rivers State, the National Working Committee (NWC), pursuant to the provisions of Section 29 (2) (b) of the Constitution of our Party, has, on behalf of the National Executive Committee (NEC) approved the appointment of the expired Excos as Caretaker Committee Members.

“For the avoidance of doubt, attached to this letter is the authentic list of the Caretaker Committee Members in Rivers State. These Caretaker Committees shall run the affairs of our Party at their appropriate levels for a period of three (3) months effective from the dates of their expiration, i.e.  March 14, 18, 21, 2024 for Wards, LGA, and State, respectively.

“Please note that the NWC equally approved that anywhere vacancies have occurred due to death, removal, resignation, or defection, such vacancies shall not be filled.

“While thanking you for your continuous commitment, please accept the assurances of the NWC’s highest regards”.

Fubara emphasised that the party stood on the agreement reached on the issue as contained in the letter by the NWC to the State Chairman of PDP dated March 27, adding that no amount of intimidation, clandestine moves, wasteful lobbying and needless expenditure of public funds would change the position already taken.

The Governor said that the list purported to be members of the Caretaker Committees of the party in the state was only the imagination of its purveyors, and advised those, whose names were removed in the list and gullible members of the public to ignore it in its entirety.

He said that the party did not at any time remove or replace the names of officers, whose tenures had been officially extended for three months, pending possible National Executive Committee ratification on April 18.

Fubara insisted that what was published on Thursday was not only fake, concocted and manipulated to suit the desperate ambitions of enemies of the state and its people, but also a deliberate attempt to provoke members and cause discord in the party.

He observed that the list was the handiwork of politicians, who were spending public funds to cause unnecessary tension, anxiety and friction in the polity, and also distract the government from the real task of governance.

The Governor urged the elected officers of the party at ward, local government, and state levels whose names were removed and replaced with fictitious names to remain calm, and go about their legitimate duties as officers of the party.

He also warned those fomenting trouble and fanning the embers of confusion and disunity to retrace their steps, and embrace peace or face severe consequences.

The governor also warned those, whose names were forced into the “fake and fabricated” list not to be deceived by anybody with unmerited appointment, and avoid parading themselves or showing their presence at any party offices pretending to be officials, as anyone caught would be made to face the full wrath of the law for forgery and impersonation.

Nigeria will overcome challenges, says Wike

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Nyesom Wike has expressed optimism that Nigeria will overcome its challenges.

Wike gave the assurance on Thursday when the Methodist Prelate, Most Rev. Oliver Aba, visited him in his office.

The Minister said: “I believe by the special grace of God, Nigeria would come out from the turmoil that we are in.

“The signs are clear; we have no regret; and we have no doubt that victory shall be ours.”

Wike thanked the Church for the prayers for Nigerians and administration of President Bola Tinubu to actualise his vision and dreams in the “Renewed Hope” agenda.

He noted that nobody could govern without the backing of God, stressing that it was important for every leader to know this.

“That is why Tinubu has never failed to ask religious leaders to continue to pray for his administration and for the growth of Nigeria.

“Prayer is key. We can do all we think, but without God nothing can be achieved, and so his victory; his hope is anchored on God,” the minister said.

He assured the Methodist Church that the FCT Administration would consider their request for land to build offices and a media centre.

Aba explained that the land, if allocated, would be used for the development of a liaison office and a benefiting media centre to enhance evangelism and other social amenities.

He said that a similar request was submitted to the Administration in 2023 but was not granted.

Aba pledged the Church’s commitment for continued prayers to support the Tinubu-led government to succeed.

“This is because, his success is our success, and his success is the joy of all Nigerians.

“In actualising his ‘renewed hope’ agenda, I pray for economic renaissance for our dear country and terming the evil of insecurity in the land.

“I affirm that there is hope for Nigeria and Nigerians,” the Methodist Prelate said.

Ignore distractions, focus on restoring FCT’s master plan, assembly tells Wike

The Arewa Youth Assembly have called on the Honourable Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Barrister Nyesom Wike to completely ignore the nuisance and continuous efforts of saboteurs to distract him from restoring the original master plan of the FCT.

The call came amidst the recent outbursts that followed the demolition of some structures in Asokoro district of Abuja by the Honourable Minister.

This was contained in a press statement signed by the Speaker of the Assembly, Mohammed Salihu Danlami in Abuja and made available to the media.

Danlami explained that Wike is not targeting any particular individual or ethnic group as alleged by some, but is working on restoring FCT’s master plan which everyone is aware exists.

He said the minister since his appointment has done everything to transform the FCT, make it safe, investment friendly, healthy and habitable for all Nigerians irrespective of their religion or ethnic background.

”They have tried to distract him and sabotage these projects using several attempts that have all failed and their desperation has led them to hiding behind ethnicity to cause chaos and distracting the Honourable Minister who is tirelessly working to fulfill Mr President’s renewed hope agenda.

”At this juncture, we will not relent, but caution with a strong voice against unguarded and inciteful speeches, those in the act of spreading it should be careful and desist form doing so or face the wrath of the law as their comments are capable of propagating violence and lawlessness in the society.

”Any individual who feels unhappy about the ongoing infrastructural revolution by the Minister should turn to the relevant authority and let the rule of law prevail.

”While we call on the Honourable Minister, Barrister Ezenwo Neysom Wike to ignore all the distractions in whatever forms they might appear and continue to develop Abuja, we urge all Nigerians irrespective of their tribe or religion to stand united behind the Minister and support him in actualising the dream of transforming Abuja to a model city in the world”.

Projects: Wike lauds FCT residents’ patience

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Mr Nyesom Wike, has commended residents of the territory for their patience, following the inconveniences the ongoing projects across the FCT have caused.

Wike gave the commendation in Abuja on Wednesday, after he inspected some ongoing projects in the territory.

“I commend all of you for your support and the residents of Abuja, who have been making some sacrifices.

“Some roads have been diverted while some areas are experiencing huge traffic due to the ongoing road projects across the city,” he said.

He promised that some of the projects would be delivered in May, to celebrate President Bola Tinubu one year in office.

“Where we are now is Goodluck Jonathan Highway, which is being completed and going to be part of the roads that we believed, will be commissioned in May.

“We have spotted some areas where we think the contractor, Salini, should make some adjustments. Overall, it will be completed and in one or two weeks the streetlights will be on.

“We also went to Guzape Lot II, where the roads infrastructure being provided will also be completed and before May ending, the project will be handed over to us by Gilmor,” he said.

The minister also inspected road projects in Diplomatic Zone, Guzape, though not part of the project for inauguration in May, according to the minister, but would be completed in the next one and half year, if funds were released.

He assured residents that the FCT Administration would make the funds available to ensure its completion.

“Generally, I think we are doing well,” the minister added.

On the road resurfacing projects in Asokoro, being handled by Julius Berger, the minister assured residents that all road resurfacing projects would be completed before may.

He added, “even though we are not inviting Mr President to commission them, but let the world know that Abuja is wearing a new look.”

The minister also thanked Tinubu for signing the N1.28 trillion FCT 2024 appropriations into law, adding that the development would enable the FCT Administration to begin procurement processes.

“What you will see will be a revolution in terms of infrastructure. With this budget, a lot of things will be done, not just on roads, but also in health and education sectors,” he said.

Wike urged residents to commend the government where it made improvements rather than condemnation all the time.

“There are those who will never be happy in their lives. They are sadists. If anybody said that there is no improvement in streetlight, he is a sadist.

“We are trying to make some repairs of those that have been vandalised which is not easy.

“Don’t bother about sadists, there is nothing we can do about them,” the minister said.
