Every Nigerian wants to take pictures with me – Wike

The Minister of Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike has said despite how people abuse him on social media, when he enters a place, everyone wants to take a photo with him.

Wike said this at an event he organised in his country home in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital on Sunday.

He stated that he was the centre of attention at a recent event organised by Femi Gbajabiamila, the Chief of Staff to President Bola Tinubu, in Lagos.

The former Rivers governor said despite Nigerians insulting and criticising him on social media, people still run into him at events and public places begging to identify and take pictures with him.

He said: “If you see social media, you would think this man is the most evil person.

“Immediately I entered the place, every Nigerian wanted to snap with me. I wonder if it is me that people want to snap with or a devil or ghost.

“To the point that the chief of staff said ‘Are you the one doing the party? Am I not the one doing the party?’ I said you are the one who invited me here.

“I said God, help me let my wife not see these pictures.”

Wike said the same incident played out at the home of the chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), Zacheus Adedeji.

“I said if I am collecting money, do you know how much I’ll make?” he asked.

The minister said some Nigerians residing abroad also volunteer to carry his luggage at airports.

“We went to London, the moment we were at terminal 5 at Heathrow, Nigerians volunteered to carry my luggage,” he said.

Wike attributed the goodwill to the “impact” he has made in people’s lives.

“You must make an impact on people’s lives. Whatever position you find yourself in, make impact,” he added.

    • FCT Minister realigns with Victor Giadom
    • APC chief vows to support Wike’s team in River

Minister of Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Abuja, Chief Nyesom Wike,  has mended fences and  realigned with his estranged friend and Southsouth Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Chief Victor Giadom.

Wike, who was hosted by Giadom at his Bera country home in Gokana Local Government Area of Rivers State yesterday, said he was happy to be back to his friend.

Though the former Rivers governor described the event as a private visit devoid of politics, it reinforced speculations that Wike was preparing the ground to defect to the APC and lead a solid team to support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

The event attracted serving senators and members of the House of Representatives from Rivers, leaders of APC and the PDP; two former chairmen of Rivers PDP, Felix Obuah and Amb. Desmond Akawor; Southsouth Chairman of PDP, Chief Dan Orbih; PDP National Secretary, Sam Anyanwu, traditional rulers, local government chairmen, youths and women among others.

Clarifying the purpose of his visit, Wike said: ” I didn’t come here for politics. I came here to visit my friend, Giadom. Let nobody misinterpret why I came here. That is why I came with PDP and APC leaders. It is a private visit to my friend.”

Wike said Giadom only gathered his people to show he was still politically relevant, noting that politics was about making impact on the people.

Addressing Giadom, he said: “I have never been in doubt about your capacity to relate with your people. Politics is about impact. If you want to be a successful politician you must impact on your people so that when you call them they will answer you”.

Speaking about how people valued him across the country and how they always posed for pictures with him, Wike said it was a testament of his service to the people.

But he said: “Forget about these hungry noisemakers on the road. When the time comes, we will know who is in charge and who is not in charge. There is a time for everything.

“This is not time for politics. When the time comes, we will know who is who. If you like, abuse me as you want. If you like, employ everybody on social media. I have never bothered myself one day to know who is abusing me. Politics will come. We didn’t contest election based on social media. We spoke to the people, they listened and believed in us.”

Speaking on his realignment with Giadom, he said: “Party will come and go and friendship will remain. We have made our mistakes, we are all humans but friendship remains.

“When I was appointed a Minister, Victor Giadom led a team to congratulate me. It does not matter where you belong to. What is important is the interest of Rivers. If you want to be a successful politician, greedy ones will not like you. Nobody has done well in politics without enemies. Those who hate you are in the minority. Those who love you are in the majority.”

Wike recalled his capacity when he held sway as the Rivers governor insisting that he would continue to support the administration of President Tinubu.

He said: “When I was governor, Nigeria heard about Rivers State. That is what I have always preached. So, nobody should be afraid. I have no regrets when I stood by with my colleagues and friends that the presidency must go to the South.

“There was nothing I was not offered. But I said no. That is why I will continue to support the government of Asiwaju Ahmed Bola Tinubu. As I am going back home, I am going with the satisfaction that my friend is back.

“This visit I came today will cause a lot of trouble. Some people will start visits now. Follow who knows road. Continue to support Victor and all your leaders that mean well for all of you.

“For the first time in history, Ogoni man is the chairman of works. I am happy that Ledum Mitee is a member of the NNPCL. Let nobody do community problems. When you do that, development will not come”.

Earlier, Giadom referred to Wike’s visit as the homecoming of a brother, a friend and a leader and assured him that they would support a team he would lead in Rivers.

Giadom said: “Today is homecoming of a brother, a friend and a leader. I stand here on this ground to let you know that we have lived well, paid our dues and contributed to the development of this place.

“Be rest assured that we will support the team you will lead in Rivers to provide support for our President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who is the main reason we are all here today. This place, nobody can challenge any visitor on this soil. We are in firm control of this place.”

    • FCT minister breaks silence after Abuja peace deal

Minister of Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Nyesom Wike, yesterday spoke on the peace deal brokered by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to resolve the political crisis in Rivers State.

He praised the President for intervening in the conflict, which had led to a chain of events, including the demolition of the House of Assembly complex, resignation of some members of the State Executive Council and protests by supporters of the two camps, led by himself and Governor Siminalayi Fubara.

Wike broke his silence on the resolutions in Port Harcourt, the state capital, while addressing a church  congregation during a thanksgiving for George Kelly Alabo, who recently resigned as Commissioner for Works.

The service was attended by 27 members of the House of Assembly, led by Speaker Martins Amaewhule, and those who recently resigned as commissioners and special advisers.

Contrary to the position of some Rivers elders who faulted the presidential intervention, Wike insisted that President Tinubu deserved commendation for intervening in the crisis, stressing that his aim was to restore peace.

He said President Tinubu had earlier invited them privately and told them what they should do to end the crisis.

The minister warmed people to desist from involvement in conflicts between two politicians without first investigating the root causes.

He said: “We must thank Mr. President for intervening. I was not the one who invited Mr. President. You people were the one asking the President to intervene.

“Now, he has intervened and you are now saying he has no constitutional power. President has intervened to bring peace. No matter what circumstances, the President invites me to a meeting and tells me to do something within 24 hours I will carry it out.

“This is because not only as president, I have subjected myself to the peace process. Why is everybody shouting? Some of you didn’t even know that Mr. President had invited us privately and said do this. You agreed before Mr. President, but you didn’t do it. Then, Mr. President asked the larger state to come. We must tell ourselves this simple truth”.

Wike criticised some elders for trying to get their pound of flesh because those they supported in the last elections failed at the polls and at the Court of Appeal.

The Minister said: “In 2014 and 2015 when I wanted to be governor, two people invited me to their houses and said that the elders of the state wanted to see me. I went thinking they were the elders of the state.

“On getting there, I saw only two men. I said two of you are the elders of the state? They told me the elders had decided I should not run an election. I told them you must be joking. I left. The same people again have constituted themselves as elders of the state.

“Check everybody there, some of them, their sons lost elections; even lost at the court of appeal. Now, they have come to be elders of the state. Everybody wants to take their pound of flesh. Wike stopped me from not going here. Wike made me not to be this. Even those that Wike made had also joined them. That is the irony of the world”

The former governor faulted efforts to tribalise the crisis, saying that most people had forgotten that he was the architect of the entire process that produced the governor.

He said: “Let me use this opportunity to tell the church that blackmail is the easiest thing. Some of you may be reading what is going on. Sit down properly and ask yourself: can this be true? Power and money, if you are not careful, it can destroy you. It can also make you, depending on how you handle it.

“I have never one day done anything that will bring this state backward. It was during my time I fought many states to win back our oil wells. The money that comes from those oil wells is not in my pocket, but for the interest of the state. To show character when I was here, I never went to see the Federal Government. I was the only opposition to the Federal Government. I challenged them.

“I hear many people say we are from so place. But nobody remembered who was the architect. Now, you are telling us where you are from.

“All of us, irrespective of where you come from, know that the state belongs to all of us. There is nothing like Ijaw and there is nothing like Ikwerre. All I know is Rivers State.

“If you want to settle us, find out the facts, don’t just shout asawana. When we were choosing who will go, we never shouted asawana. All we said was come, you will go and represent us. That is how it was supposed to be.

“Part of governance is managing people. If you cannot manage people, you don’t have business being in government. It is not only road contract, management of people. If you can’t manage people, you don’t have business to be there. I have had my own crisis, I managed it and survived it. If you have yours, pray. If you can’t pray, meet pastors and they will intercede for you”.

Wike insisted that politicians must play by the rules, saying that despite his giant strides as a governor, he obeyed the rules.

He said: “Being a pastor, there are rules. Being a traditional ruler, there are rules. If you have chosen to be a politician, there are also rules. You must obey. I was a governor. I obeyed.  It didn’t stop me from performing my functions.

“I do governance and at the same time I would go back and obey those rules. That is why you can see me with leaders. Don’t pull the ladder you used to climb. If not, when you are coming back, I don’t know how you will come down.

“I urge the church to continue praying for us to be firm.  I have done my path. I am happy and I am doing well in Abuja today. Leave propaganda and blackmail. There is nothing I am looking for in this state now.”

“I have my own budget as FCT Minister. I have my own commissioners. By January, I will present my budget before the National Assembly. I preside over the expenditure. All I am saying is if you are a politician, play according to the rules. People laboured. People suffered”.

Wike highlighted the danger of dabbling into disagreements between two politicians without first knowing their root causes.

He pleaded with the church to pray for peace in Rivers and the country,  adding that it would be in the best interest of everybody for President Tinubu to succeed.

He said: “When Boma Iyaye was appointed executive director of finance and administration in NDDC, the first thing he did was to thank God and then, brought his chiefs to my house to thank me.

“Through Boma, something would come, through me something came to Boma. Nobody talks about where Boma comes from. I am Ikwerre man. But when politicians are fighting, if you don’t know the root cause of the matter dont kill yourself.

“I was just laughing. Those of you carrying flags shouting what I don’t know, assuming another group confronts you and another thing happens, what would you tell your parents; something you don’t even know the root cause.

“I plead with the church to continue to pray for peace not just in Rivers but the entire country. If the president does not succeed all of us will suffer it. I do believe that he will succeed.”

Rivers crisis: appreciate Tinubu for intervening  – Wike

Minister of Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has said President Tinubu should be appreciated for intervening in the political saga in Rivers state.

Speaking during the 20th Wedding Anniversary/Thanksgiving of Hon Dr & Dr (Mrs) George-Kelly D.A. Alabo at the Kings Assembly Church, on Sunday, 24th December, Wike said it was strange that the same people who went to beg President Bola Tinubu to intervene in Rivers State issues are the ones now saying he lacks the constitutional power to intervene.

The minister, who explained that he was not the one who went to the President to seek for his intervention added that the President must however be appreciated for his fatherly role.

He said: “We must thank Mr President for interfering and intervening, but I was not even the one who went to the President to seek for his intervention.

“They were saying president intervene, president intervene, and president intervened, they are now saying Mr President has no constitutional power to have intervened. But they were the same people who sought the President’s intervention and he has intervened to bring peace. They are now turning around to say no, the President does not have the constitutional power.

“No matter what circumstances, if Mr President invites me to a meeting and tells me to do something, within 24 hours I will carry it out. Mr President invited us and said do this, do this and this. You agreed, but later, you started saying he has no power to intervene. As for me, I have subjected myself to the peace process.”

Wike went on to advise those taking sides in the political crisis in the state not to fall for political lies and propaganda but to always seek the truth as he disclosed the stories of him making demands on the state are false.

He said: “leave blackmail and propaganda, there is nothing I am looking for in the state. The truth would eventually come out”.

The minister, who said there are rules in every career insisted that politicians must learn to follow the rules, adding that: “Being a pastor, there are rules. Being a traditional ruler, there are rules. If you are aspiring to be a politician, know that there are also rules you must obey. I was Governor, I also obeyed rules and that didn’t stop me from performing my functions. That’s why you can see me with leaders. I would have thrown them away too, but I didn’t.

“If you get to the top and destroy the ladder, I don’t know how you will come down”.

While saying that power and money can build or destroy people, the FCT Minister said he had never for one day, done anything to bring the State down.

According to a statement issued on Sunday night by the Director Press Office of the FCT Minister, Anthony Ogunleye, wike said: “As Governor, I fought many States to win back our oil wells. The money we are getting from those oil wells today is not in my pocket. Rather, it is for the benefit of the State”.

Speaking further, he said: “We must tell our people the simple truth. I have done my own part and I am happy. I am doing well in Abuja too. There is nothing I am looking for in this State now”.

Cautioning people fueling ethnic division in the state the FCT Minister said: “All of us, irrespective of who we are, we should know that Rivers State belongs to all of us irrespective of where you come from.”

He urged the church to continue to pray for peace to reign in the State and the country, and also pray for the President to succeed, saying: “if the President does not succeed, all of us will suffer it.

“As for me, I will continue to do my best to make sure that the President succeeds.”

Wike to Abuja residents: Let’s be security conscious during yuletide

The minister of Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike has urged residents of Abuja to be security conscious and shun any act that will lead to breakdown of law and order.

Wike gave the advise in his Christmas message issued on Sunday, December 24.

He said: “On behalf of the Federal Capital Territory Administration, I hereby extend my heartfelt greetings to all the residents of the Federal Capital Territory for the 2023 Christmas which is a season that   transcends borders and, brings people together in a spirit of love, compassion, and goodwill.

“This festive season which celebrates the birth of Jesus Christ, holds immense significance for all of us as it symbolizes the birth of hope, the promise of renewal, and the enduring power of kindness.

“In the midst of our diverse backgrounds and unique journeys, we find common ground in the universal themes of love, generosity, and the joy of giving.

“As we gather with family and friends, let us reach out to one another especially the less fortunate ones amongst us with open hearts and open hands, fostering a sense of togetherness and understanding. In the spirit of Christmas, let us embrace the opportunity to make a positive impact on the lives of those around us.

“Let us remind ourselves that small acts of kindness can have a profound impact on individuals and families facing challenges.

“Our Federal Capital Territory, which is a microcosm of Nigeria’s rich diversity, stands as a testament to the strength that comes from unity. Residents of the FCT have over time, imbibed the culture of standing together and helping each other in times of need.

“Let the spirit of the season therefore once again serve as an inspiration for us to bridge gaps, foster understanding, and build communities where every resident feels valued and included”.

The minister further said: “As we face the challenges of nation building let us not despair as we forge ahead but look forward with a renewed hope for a brighter future and a determination to build a greater nation for the coming generation of Nigerians.”

Wike said the FCT Administration remains steadfast and resolute in its current efforts to implementing projects that enhance infrastructure, promote economic growth, and foster a better quality of life for all residents.

He called on all residents to also meet their obligations and join hands with the administration in its quest of building for the country a befitting capital territory.

Wike said: “As we enjoy the festivities, let us remain law abiding in all our activities especially as they concern city sanitation and traffic management.

“While security has been beefed up across the Territory throughout the duration of the festivities, residents are also advised to be security conscious and reach out to the security agencies whenever you notice anything out of the ordinary.

“For those travelling out of the Territory for the festivities I wish you all a very safe journey. Once more I wish all residents of the Federal Capital Territory a very merry and memorable Christmas.”

A group under the aegis of Concerned Citizens of Rivers State (CC23) has appealed to Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, as well as their supporters, to uphold and abide by the terms of the peace deal brokered by President Bola Tinubu.
