Sheikh Gumi’s attack on Tinubu, Wike malicious, inciting, says Northern Elders

A group of Northern Elders under the auspices of North-East Consolidated Peoples Forum (NCPF) on Monday, October 23, described the attack on President Bola Tinubu and FCT minister, Nyesom Wike by controversial Islamic cleric, Sheikh Ahmed Gumi as malicious, inciting and a deliberate misinterpretation of history of the North.

Speaking through their spokesman, Mohammed Abba Liman, in Abuja, the northern elders distanced themselves from the recent religious attack, saying he was only expressing his personal opinion and not on behalf of the North.

The group expressed their determination to continue to support President Tinubu and the FCT Minister, Wike.

While describing Gumi as a “divisive element”, they said it was easy for him to make an “unhealthy and inciting statement” because he has not experienced conflict, the pains and horrors of war before.

The northern elders also condemned the religious and ethnic incitements by those they described as “misguided elements and their sponsors” in order to cause disaffection and disunity in the country” saying “such does not represent the collective view and interest of the North, and certainly not Nigeria’s interest.”

Sheikh Gumi had taken a w swipe at the FCT minister, Wike, for receiving the Israeli ambassador who paid him a courtesy visit in his office, describing him as “Satanic.”

Gumi also accused President Tinubu of pursuing a Christian agenda against Muslims, adding that Christians cannot be trusted with power because according to Gumi, if you empower them, they would turn around and kill you.

He asked the president to sack the FCT minister and said that Muslims would raise up against President Tinubu and would not allow him to finish his tenure in office.

The cleric added that it was Christian soldiers who killed northern political leaders in the past.

The northern elders group made up of statesmen and women disagreed with the cleric saying, “We totally condemn such unprovoked divisive statement from a divisive element who is seeking to destabilize the peace and unity of our dear county, Nigeria, for selfish reason.

“The utterance is toxic and it should not be accepted by any decent and sound-minded person who loves peace and our Nigeria.”

The constitution of the federal public of Nigeria, according to Liman, “gives power and right to any Nigerian irrespective of tribes, religion and political affiliation to be appointed to any position of power as long as that person operates within the limit of our law.

He said: “What Nigeria needs now is a consolidation of its peace, unity and progress.

“We caution profiteers of religious fundamentalism and ethnicity, as well as agents of destabilization and instability to desist henceforth.

“We therefore stand with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Chief (Barr) Nyesom Wike. We indeed stand with Nigeria and, of course, the Nigerian constitution for a better governance system for all Nigeria.”

I can’t determine relationship between countries, says Wike

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has clarified his October 3 meeting with the Israeli Ambassador to Nigeria.

Wike described insinuations that he supported Israel against Palestine as baseless and untrue.

The minister, at a recent meeting with the leadership of the Abuja National Mosque Management Board, said he had no constitutional powers to determine Nigeria’s diplomatic relations with other countries, as such powers lies absolutely with the President and Commander-in-Chief.

He said: “I have heard from social media platforms that we had a meeting that we are doing this and that with Israel. I am here acting on delegation of powers on behalf of Mr. President. I cannot determine the relationship between two countries. So, it is difficult for anybody to say I am doing this, I am doing that.

“Any foreign body that wants to have anything to do with Nigeria, it is the Minister of Foreign Affairs who will write to me and state that these people want to see me; it is simple. And when they come, it is in my position to say look, we want to partner with you.”

Wike further clarified that his meeting with the Israeli Ambassador was purely for agricultural partnership in the interest of farmers in the FCT.

He said: “In Abuja here, most of them have cultural farms and we say it is our desire to help anybody who wants to invest in Abuja, particularly in agriculture, in order to employ our people and so get more revenue. It has nothing to do with another country. It doesn’t work that way.”

The Israeli Ambassador to Nigeria, Michael Freeman, on October 3, visited Wike days before the war broke out. However, despite the gap between the visit and the war, some elements had accused Wike of offering Nigeria’s support to Israel.

Freeman, during the visit, expressed his country’s willingness to work with Nigeria to generate employment, transform Abuja into a technology hub, and engage in agricultural partnerships.

    Wike: PANDEF tackles Gumi, others

The Chief Edwin Clark led Pan Niger Delta Forum, PANDEF, has berated Sheikh Ahmad Abubakar Gumi for his recent comment against the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Nyesom Wike.

Gumi, a prominent Islamic cleric had urged President Bola Tinubu to remove Wikevas minister of the federal capital territory (FCT), failure to do so that they will not be on the same.page with the president.

But PANDEF in a statement on Sunday noted that Gumi was out of tune to have made such a call.
The group reminded him that what the country needed right now should be how to foster peace and unity and not divisive posture.

The statement which was signed by Dr. Ken Robinson, the group
National Publicity Secretary reads in part: “It is most unfortunate that at a time when every well-meaning Nigerian should be concerned about the stability, peace, and unity of the country, the likes of Sheikh Gumi are further stoking the ambers of discord, certainly, intended to exacerbate tension in the country. It’s utterly despicable that a so-called Cleric would fashion himself into a shameless promoter of parochialism and acrimony.

“We consider the call for the removal of Chief Nyesom Wike as Minister of FCT, and indeed, any other Niger Deltan, based on wild predispositions, as an indirect poke at the people of the Niger Delta region, and the South-South Geopolitical Zone, in particular, to catechize our stake in the Nigerian State.

“Perhaps, it is necessary to underscore some unadorned facts Sheikh Gumi is pretending to overlook; Abuja is the Federal Capital Territory of Nigeria and not a sectional capital; more so, it (FCT) was developed and continues to be developed with, mainly, the oil and gas resources of the Niger Delta region, where Nyesom Wike comes from.

“It is commonly known that crude oil was swapped instead of payment to contractors in building the infrastructure in Abuja, including the Aso Rock Villa. At that time, no one talked of Abuja belonging to any particular ethnic group.

“In fact, from the administration of Shehu Shagari up until the General Babangida regime, the federal government encouraged all citizens, no matter where they come from, to acquire and develop property in the Federal Capital Territory, because Abuja belongs to all Nigerians.

“Suffice it to state that any Nigerian; from the North, South, East, or West, could and should, be appointed to serve as Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

“Remarkably, Nyesom Wike is the 17th Minister of the FCT, but only the second Southerner to be appointed in 47 years, since the creation of the FCT.

“The first Southerner, and the very first Minister of the FCT, for that matter, was Mobolaji Ajose-Adeogun, who recently passed on at 96; he served as FCT Minister between 1976 and 1979, under the military regime of General Obasanjo. The other 15 past Ministers of the FCT are all persons of northern extraction. The records are there for all to see!

“Ironically, a Northerner, and one of the founding architects of this country, Musa Yar’Adua, father of late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua and General Shehu Musa Yar’Adua, served as the Minister of Lagos Affairs during the First Republic from 1963 until the military truncated the First Republic in 1966. Nobody complained then!”
The group also commended President Bola Tinubu for his choice of Wike as FCT Minister.

“We commend President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his patriotism and political will in appointing a Southerner, the former Governor of Rivers State, as the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory after over four decades. “

The statement further read: “It is needful that all patriots and true lovers of the nation, particularly of northern extraction, without equivocation, denounce the dangerous diatribes of Sheikh Gumi and those of his likes, in the national interest.

“PANDEF wonders why the Nation’s Security agencies have not arrested the thoughtless cleric for his subversive annotations and numerous “delinquencies”.

“We are warning Sheikh Gumi and his backers to leave Nyesom Wike alone; and allow the Minister to do his job. This country belongs to all of us and no section is superior to the other!

“PANDEF implores the FCT Minister not to be distracted by the divisive antics of a few while urging him to carry out his duties and responsibilities as Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, judiciously, and without biases, for the benefit of all; irrespective of religion, tribe or political proclivities.”

Arrest Gumi over attack on Wike, Nabena urges security agencies

Former Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Yekini Nabena on Sunday called on security agencies in the country to arrest a Kaduna-based Islamic cleric, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, over his recent public outburst against the Minister of  Federal-Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike.

Gumi, last Thursday in a video posted on his official Facebook page criticised Wike for hosting the Israeli Ambassador to Nigeria in his office and called him a “Satan”.

The cleric in the sermon also asserted that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu would be stopped from serving for eight years, as he threatened that the North would withdraw their support for him in 2027

But Nabena, in a statement on Sunday condemned what he described as a sense of entitlement by some ‘ethnic and religious bigots’ in the Northern part of Nigeria.

He said that the people of the Niger Delta and Southerners in general would no longer fold their arms while the likes of Sheik Gumi spit on their faces irrespective of political or religious beliefs.

The APC Chieftain maintained that “no Nigerian is more a Nigerian than anybody in Nigeria.

“At this stage, we expect all the voices of reasoning to speak out because the sense of entitlement of the likes of Sheik Gumi is becoming more satanic.

“How can you justify the rationale behind some Northerners heading some positions that are naturally meant for the people of Niger Delta and the South? Up till date, a Northerner is still the GMD of NNPCL.

“If religious and ethnic bigots like Gumi and others are saying a Southern Christian, especially from the oil-rich Niger Delta, can not hold the positions of FCT Ministry and the Senate President, we demand explanations on what qualifies a North Muslim in the leadership of agencies like NIMASA, NNPCL, NPDC, NLNG, NPA, and so on”

Nabena then warned that no evil must befall the minister throughout his tenure, adding that Gumi and others like him would be held responsible by the Niger Delta people if anything goes wrong.

He maintained that some Northerners’ sense of entitlement was not only dividing the nation but making them see Southerners as inferior to them in a country where everyone was supposed to have equal rights.

The former APC spokesman then cautioned against reckless public comments that could lead to a more divided country.

Nabena also called on the presidency to urgently make a bold statement and reaffirm the right of any Nigerian to hold public office anywhere in Nigeria.

He added: “I will call on the presidency to deliberately caution Sheik Gumi and his co-travellers against the statement that is capable of causing disunity and encouraging a sense of entitlement.

“I will also call on the security agencies to take Gumi’s reckless but deliberate statement seriously. Sheik Gumi should be arrested, questioned and prosecuted.

“Let it also be on record that we the Niger Delta sons and daughters will hold Sheik Gumi responsible if any evil befall Nyesom Wike throughout his days in office as FCT Minister.”

    • Join hands with FCT Minister to restore Abuja master plan, Nwuche begs Nigerians

Minister of Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Barrister Nyesom Wike has described a recent report that 100 people were killed in one of the FCT area councils in Abuja as false and exaggeration.

This is following the persistence of rising cases of ‘One chance’ robbery, and kidnapping, in Abuja.

This came as a former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Chibudom Nwuche called on Nigerians to rally behind Wike, in his drive to restore the Abuja master plan and instill discipline in urban development.

Speaking in Abuja, during his recent live broadcast with selected reporters, he vowed to shut down illegal motor parks.

While insisting that the issue of insecurity was not peculiar to FCT, he faulted the report that over 100 people were killed in Abuja. “That is not a tenable report,” Wike said.

“When you say 100 people, who are these 100 people that were killed? Some people like to exaggerate. I’m not saying that one or two persons were not killed. To say that 100 people were killed, that is not possible. We have to publish the information with facts and figures. You know one of the priorities of Tinubu’s administration is the security and protection of lives and property.

“No government can be serious if you cannot protect lives and property. And that is why for us, we have to key in and reduce the level of insecurity in FCT”.

Fear has continued to grip many residents over the activities of criminals who disguise themselves as commercial vehicle operators to attack and rob unsuspecting victims.

There have been reported cases of ‘one-chance’ robbery and kidnapping in Abuja for weeks.

A joint task force on cross-border crimes was set up last week to tackle the security menace called ‘one-chance’ robbery, with the involvement of all security operatives in the FCT.

The task force was constituted after a security meeting chaired by the Minister, Barrister Nyesom Wike.

The minister blamed the rising crime in the capital city on illegal motor parks and uncompleted buildings used as dens by criminals.

He said: “We’re getting a lot of reports about kidnappings here, about one-chance there.

“In most cases, we don’t even let the public know what has been done. I can tell you the security agencies have done quite a lot. If not, by now, the FCT would have been a different thing.

“One of the areas we identified is that the FCT is at the centre – we have Niger State, we have Kogi State, we have Nasarawa State, we have Kaduna State. And if you check these four states, these four states are states that (experience) from time to time, banditry, kidnapping.

Join hands with Wike to restore Abuja master plan, Nwuche begs Nigerians

Nwuche,  in a statement on Saturday in Abuja said: “Those who have lived in Abuja since the return of the democratic dispensation in 1999 can attest to the deterioration of the capital city by illegal structures taking over public spaces, green areas illegally allocated by unscrupulous officials to cronies, areas for public facilities like fire services/ Police stations were also allocated to individuals. How can areas in a capital city not have available spaces for the construction of fire service and Police Stations etc?

“This was especially under the immediate past minister under whose watch parts of Abuja became like slums, the streets were dirty and unkempt, a clear reason why unqualified persons should never be appointed to public offices on the basis of nepotism and tribalism,” the statement said.

He commended President Bola Tinubu for making the right decision in picking Wike “who is a known achiever and who performed exceptionally as the immediate past governor of Rivers State and brought development, and infrastructure to all local governments and cities in the state.”

He described Wike as a detribalised and nationalistic Nigerian, who would treat all Nigerians equally.

“The appointment has restored the faith of many Nigerians in our unity, equality as Nigerians, and a departure from the nepotism of the past where certain portfolios were reserved for only a part of the country,” he said.

He wondered where those condemning the minister were during the past administration “where the ministers of FCT did practically nothing but occupy space and allow the capital city to fall apart.”

He added: “No country that desires development should listen to archaic and unexposed persons, be they clerics, former government officials, etc, who prefer when only those from their tribe and religion hold sensitive offices including the defence and security portfolios in a multi-ethnic and multi-religious country. “When one walks into a Nigerian airport, police stations, immigration offices, etc one should see a reflection of our diversity and all tribes fairly represented. Not the one where at immigration services, police, customs, etc, you see a preponderance of one tribe and one religion. These are the issues that have held Nigeria down.’

He called on people of goodwill to speak up and not allow retrogressive drive down their parochial and divisive agenda.

“We all know the antics of these critics who only see things good when their tribe is appointed into positions, even when those people are destroying our country on account of their incompetence, bigotry, and putting a knife to our national unity they keep quiet.”

He called on President Tinubu to consolidate his development strides by appointing more competent nationalists into positions of authority and removing anyone found to be a tribal or religious bigot, in order to set Nigeria firmly on the path of rapid socio-economic development and for her to join the committee of developed nations.

He urged Wike not to be distracted by “these critics as Nigerians are much wiser after suffering under incompetent leadership for many years, and understand the antics of these critics.”

He urged President Tinubu to ignore such people and continue on the part of giving every Nigerian a sense of belonging irrespective of their tribe and religion.

He said: “We had our security council meeting where the Area Council chairman where they are members of the FCT security Council.

“Let me say something here. The security situation is not peculiar to FCT. • Wike never ordered demolition of National Mosque – Management

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT),  Nyesom Wike has approved the withdrawal and revocation of houses sold to individuals by the FCT Administration but converted to other uses.

This came as the top management of the Abuja National Mosque on Friday denied the reports alleging that the FCT had approved a partial demolition of the monument.

Speaking to reporters on Friday, the Director, the Department of Development Control, FCTA, Mr. Mukhtar Galadima, disclosed that the minister had approved the withdrawal and revocation of houses sold to individuals by the FCT Administration but converted to other uses.

Galadima recalled that the Federal Government in 2005 initiated the monetisation programme because of the cost of maintaining the houses.

He explained that the houses were sold to the occupiers so that they could maintain them.

Galadima however, said after some time, some of the beneficiaries converted the houses from residential to other uses.

This, according to him, constitutes so much burden in terms of city administration and management that this administration felt it could not condone it any longer.

“It is on this note that the minister has approved and directed that all owners of such properties should revert the use of the properties to its original and designated land use which is residential.

“Failing to comply with this directive as from Nov. 1, the house is considered as revoked.

“We are given such persons and individuals until the end of October to revert to original uses, otherwise from Nov. 1, they should consider such properties as revoked and returned to FCTA,” he said.

The director said so far, the department had recorded more than 111 cases of land use conversion in respect of the sold houses, cutting across all the districts of the capital city.

He added that owners of the properties had been informed and given notices to revert to the original land uses but failed to comply.

According to him, once these houses are revoked the FCTA will decide the next line of action.

Wike never ordered demolition of National Mosque – Management

On Friday, the top management of the Abuja National Mosque also expressed displeasure and described as false, social media reports alleging that the FCT Minister had approved a partial demolition of the monument.

The leadership of the mosque urged the Muslim faithful to disregard information.

Describing the report as the handiwork of conflict merchants bent on creating religious tension in the nation and casting the minister in a bad light, the board said Wednesday’s visit to the minister was fruitful as he received them warmly and granted approval of their requests.

Director of Finance and Administration of the National Mosque, Ambassador Haliu Shuaib, and Imam of the mosque, Dr Muhammad Kabir Adam who addressed reporters hosted by Executive Secretary, Federal Capital Development Authority, (FCDA), Engr. Shehu Hadi Ahmad, said: “The Mosque is, hereby, debunking the news of partial demolition of the National Mosque and wishes to set the records straight”.

Shuaib said: “It has come to the attention of the Abuja National Mosque Management, of a news item making the rounds in social and print media regarding the purported partial demolition of the National Mosque which is creating tension and anxiety amongst the Muslim Ummah in the country and beyond.

“His Royal Highness, Etsu Nupe, Chairman, Abuja National Mosque Management Board, and his delegation paid a courtesy visit to the Hon. Minister of the FCT. The delegation was warmly received and the discussions were constructive as well as cordial and issues of mutual interest were discussed as follows:

“Development of Plot 99: The Minister was briefed that the development of the plot was receiving serious attention to the extent that the design of the project to be executed had been approved by the Development Control Department of FCDA.

“Development of Plot 63-opposite Yar’adua Centre: The Chairman also briefed the Hon. Minister that the Management of the Mosque was informed that a substantial part of plot 63 had been consumed by the proposed Inner Northern Express Way. The Chairman, therefore, requested to know the current status of the plot and also that the remaining part of the plot be reallocated to the Mosque and that appropriate replacement of the lost portion is given to the Mosque and the Hon. Minister’s response was positive.

“Renovation of the Mosque: The Chairman used the opportunity to appeal to the Hon. Minister to use his good offices to complete the rehabilitation/renovation of the National Mosque which the Hon. Minister promised to look at the issue.

“The National Mosque wishes to inform the general public that during the meeting between the Board Chairman and the Honourable Minister, there was never a time the Honourable Minister mentioned the demolition of any part of the National Mosque. He, however, gave the example of demolishing a Mosque in Portharcourt which did not exist when he was a Governor. Like what happened now, he revealed that social media can cause confusion in society if care is not taken.”

“The general public should, therefore, ignore the social and print media campaign and completely disregard the fake news in circulation.”

The board, led by its chairman, the Etsu Nupe, Alhaji Yahaya Abubakar, had visited the minister on Wednesday to seek clarification on the status of its plots, 63 and 99, in the wake of the administration’s drive to recover all ground rents debts.

At the meeting, Wike extended the three-month ultimatum to religious groups since they largely depend on freewill donations from members.

He said: “We know the finances of religious groups, they are handicapped as they are not business people, and it is only when people come to support them.

“In such areas, we can say on religious grounds, instead of three months, we can give additional time but it is not targeted at anybody or group. Now, you have come and explained, which reasonable man would not accept it. So our people should stop saying he is targeting some group or religion or ethnic group, no, it is in the interest of all of us.

He, however, gave the example of the demolition of a Mosque in Port Court which did not exist when he was a Governor. Like what happened now, he revealed that social media can cause confusion in society if care is not taken.

“The general public should, therefore, ignore the social and print media campaign and completely disregard the fake news in circulation.”

Earlier, the FCDA boss said the minister had told his guests that he had not been briefed about the status of a plot belonging to the mosque, part of which is affected by a road interchange.

Accordingly, Wike has given the FCDA 24 hours to bring him up to speed on the issue with a view to compensating the mosque for the portion of its undeveloped land, Plot 63, lost to the road interchange.

He said: “We have complied with the directive and have briefed the minister and he has immediately approved that the excised portion be taken note of and re-issue a title to compensate them for the lost portion.

“Indeed, as a further demonstration of good faith, the Honourable Minister of the FCT, Barr. Nyesom Wike assured the delegation of the support of the FCT Administration in the maintenance of the National Mosque as well as the National Christian Center which are all National Monuments.

“The above explanation is the true and correct reflection of what actually transpired and this could also be further confirmed from the National Mosque Management Board. It is, therefore, hoped that this explanation will bring closure to the so-called National Mosque demolition fallacy.”

Niger Delta ex-militant leaders warn Gumi over anti-Wike comments

Ex-Niger Delta militant leaders have described as “provocative, reprehensible, and despicable” the recent statements by Sheikh Ahmad Gumi against the minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike.

The Islamic cleric had in a video sermon posted on his official Facebook page, labeled Nyesom Wike as “Satan” for receiving the Israeli Ambassador to Nigeria in his office.

The cleric in the sermon also asserted that President Bola Tinubu would be stopped from serving for eight years.

The ex-militant leaders warned Sheikh Gumi and his collaborators to refrain from actions and unguarded comments capable of provoking the people of the Niger Delta.

The ex-militant leaders, under the auspices of the Movement for the Sustainable Development of the Niger Delta (MSDND) in a statement on Friday, October 20, by its national coordinator, Ayibatekena Olodin, expressed suspicion that Sheikh Gumi may be representing groups of corrupt individuals who plunged the FCT into an abysmal state.

The MSDND described Gumi’s utterance as disheartening, wondering that some individuals still engaged in hate speech and divisive rhetorics seeking to use religion to sow seeds of discord among Nigerians.

They also described the statement as a provocative reminder of the inequality, mass genocide and monumental fraud perpetrated by some Northerners under the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari.

The ex-militants said while the people of the Niger Delta region considered Gumi as a dissident in the northern region, it must be pointed out that the FCT is not a northern state-owned capital but a detribalised territory owned by all Nigerians.

The MSDND said: “We have resolved to point out to Gumi and his likes that the massive fraud in the FCT including a garnishment order to the tune of $800 million against the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) was perpetrated under a Nothern minister and a Northern President.

“The FCT minister, Nyesom Wike, is only making very hard decisions to restore the economy of the FCT. It is a sad reminder that Gumi could not speak out when his alleged sponsors were kidnapping, maiming, and killing northerners under the guise of Islamic fundamentalists.

“Where was he when former President Buhari used Nigeria’s infrastructures and souls of Nigerians to borrow money? Suddenly, he turned to an activist against the FCT administration.

“We challenge Gumi and his cohorts to mention a state Governor that has performed in their Northern states such as Nyesom Wike since the advent of democratic rule. Wike is the pride of the Niger Delta region.”

They, however, said that despite the provocative stance of Gumi and his cohorts, the people of the region stand firm in support of their son, brother, and leader, Nyesom Wike, and called on the security agencies to immediately commence an investigation of Gumi over his alleged ties with terrorists and their activities across the country.

They strongly called on the Minister of Mines and Steel Development, Hon. Dele Alake, to ensure that the revenues from the mining of precious minerals in the North such as gold are domiciled in the nation’s treasury.

The ex-militants warned that the failure of the Northern states to allow collective revenue into the nation’s purse would force the youths from the Niger Delta to truncate crude oil exploration and deny Northern states the benefits.

They equally urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to embark on an urgent review of mining policies and ensure revenue from mining activities is domiciled in the nation’s purse, noting that “we stand ready to champion this cause to ensure that all revenues from our nation’s resources are brought into the national treasury.

“We are ready to cut off the Northern states from crude oil exploration revenue if the monies from mining activities are not domiciled with the Federal Government.”
