  • Wike, Rivers APC clash over alleged N3.2b bribe to defectors

Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike, and the state’s Chairman of All Progressives Congress (APC), Ojukaye Flag-Amachree, yesterday disagreed on an alleged N3.2 billion given to some lawmakers to sponsor their defection and that of Governor Samuel Ortom, from APC.

Flag-Amachree, speaking at the inauguration of unit and ward coordinators of Free Rivers Development Initiative in Port Harcourt City Local Government Area, declared that Wike, a Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governor, wooed defectors from APC with N3.2 billion.

Rivers APC chairman said: “Wike has so far spent N3.2 billion to bribe members of the National Assembly and others to defect from the APC. Is that what we asked him (Wike) to do? Many of the APC members collected Wike’s bribe and they refused to defect. That is why Wike is very angry.

“Wike is running a one-man-show government without budget. Rivers electorate will put an end to Wike’s bad governance in 2019.”

Flag-Amachree promised that the governorship candidate of the APC, soon to emerge at its primary election, would occupy the Government House, on May 29.

Wike claimed Ortom, some senators, federal and state lawmakers defected because of the alleged failure of the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari, which is suffocating Nigerians.

Commissioner for Information and Communications Chief Emma Okah, who spoke for the governor, urged the people to ignore the lies of the APC chairman, stressing the allegations lacked logic.

He said: “How would any man imagine that somebody who is being beaten by the rain would have to be bribed before he seeks shelter? In case he (Flag-Amachree) does not know, the APC-led government at the centre has so suffocated Nigerians that there is no way that many of them (APC members) will not seek refuge elsewhere.

“It is important he (Flag-Amachree) comes to terms with the fact that the house (of APC) is falling. A lot of people are aware of it and so the natural thing to do is to seek remedy, succour and protection elsewhere. That is exactly what many of them are doing and that clearly showed in the spate of defections we witnessed at the National Assembly and in some states of the federation.”

  • Defections caused by APC’s failures, says Wike

As far as Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike is concerned, the recent gale of defections that hit the All Progressives Congress (APC) was due to failures of the Federal Government.

He declared the APC-led Federal Government runs on vindictiveness, intimidation and illegality, whilst denying Nigerians the dividends of democracy.

Addressing reporters after projects inspection yesterday in Port Harcourt, Wike stated that more high profile defections are in the offing across the country.

He inspected dualisation of the Elelenwo-Akpajo Road, the construction of Judges Quarters in Port Harcourt and the ongoing construction of Mile One Market.

The governor said: “Politics is all about alignments and re-alignments. We expected these defections, knowing that the ruling party at the national level has completely failed the people.

“It is not hidden that even when they had majority in the two chambers of the National Assembly, they never had it easy because their representatives knew the APC has nothing to offer the people.”

Wike said that the PDP is working round the clock with all stakeholders to put an end the APC Federal Government in 2019.

  • Wike, Atiku, Daniel hail lawmakers’ move

RIVERS State Governor Nyesom Ezenwo Wike, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, and ex-Ogun State Governor Gbenga Daniel have hailed the defection of members of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the National Assembly into the PDP

Democracy is taking shape in Nigeria, says Wike

Wike declared that the mass defections at the National Assembly indicate that democracy  is now taking shape in the country.

The governor said the defections from the APC to the PDP showed the direction  the country is headed in 2019.

He spoke yesterday during the celebration of 40 years of Legal Practice of Onueze Okocha (SAN) by Okpo Club of Nigeria (Association of Ikwerre Lawyers Worldwide) and the Inaugural Okpo Club Awards.

He said: “Democracy is taking shape in Nigeria.  I hope you are aware that  the PDP has taken over the Senate.

“We are like going  to take over at the House of Representatives.”

Wike described the day as a happy day, saying Nigerians must continue to work towards a development-oriented government next year.

    Atiku: ruling party a

    sinking ship

Atiku, who is a frontline presidential aspirant of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP),  remarked that the move was an indication that the ruling party “is a sinking ship”.

The former vice president, who is a frontline presidential aspirant under the PDP, noted that the decampment from the APC further explains the lack of capacity of the ruling party to hold and manage a political party, and indeed a government.

He called on the new entrants to see their decampment as a call to duty.

“The decision of a significant number of members of both the Senate and the House of Representatives to leave the APC and decamp into the PDP clearly indicates that there is hope that the country can be rescued from the misrule of the APC government.

PDP should be congratulated, says Daniel

Daniel, who spoke with reporters in Lagos yesterday, said the season of politics was in the air again.

Asked of his reaction to the defection of members to the party in the National Assembly, he said: “I think you should congratulate us”.

Daniel, who said he was yet to get the full details, however, said the more the merrier for the party, which looked forward to regaining power at the centre in 2019.

The former governor, who is also the Director General of the Abubakar Atiku Campaign Organisation, (AACO) in the PDP, said the former vice president remained well-placed to win the presidential ticket of the party.

  • Onnoghen, Wike, Adejumo, others push for judicial independence

Dignitaries and stakeholders thronged Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital, to inaugurate a multi-million naira four-storey courthouse donated to the National Industrial Court of Nigeria (NICN) by the Rivers State Government. Eric Ikhilae reports.

Dignitaries and major stakeholders in the Judiciary recently gathered  in  Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital, to inaugurate the new National Industrial Court of Nigeria (NICN) division in the state.

It was built and donated to the court by the Rivers State Government.

Chief Justice Walter Onnoghen, Court of Appeal President Justice Zainab Bulkachuwa, NICN President Justice Babatunde Adejumo, and Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike were among the dignitaries.

Taraba State Governor Dairius Isiaku, Rivers State’s Chief Judge Justice Adama Iyayi-Lamikanra, and former Nigeria Bar Association (NBA) President O. C. J. Okocha (SAN) were also present.

The occasion was an opportunity to reflect on the state of the Judiciary. Chief Justice Onnoghen, Justice Iyayi-Lamikanra, Wike and Okocha decried increasing cases of attacks on the courts in state as well as disregard of court decisions by government agencies and officials across the country.

The CJN, particularly, stressed the importance of an independent and virile Judiciary in the sustenance of democracy.

Chief Justice Onnoghen noted that no society, inhabited by individuals with varied orientation and beliefs, is immune to disagreements and challenges.

He, however, asserted: “The solution to our numerous problems lies in adherence to the principle of rule of law. If we do that, for four years consistently, you will see that things will fall back into places.”

Chief Justice Onnoghen, who also stressed the need for everyone to abide by the law, observed that the Constitution has provided both designated and special functions to everyone in the country.

He added:  “If we are to adhere to these functions and discharge them to the satisfaction of our conscience, then within a short while, you will see that people will begin to realise that certain things should not be done in a democratic system.

“For instance, how can you contemplate blocking the entrance of a court or closing down a court in a civilised democracy? That is not done. How can you deprive the Judiciary of the funds intended to make it function as it should?

“The Judiciary ought to be empowered. We need the assistance of all. The judges have to be free and fair. I keep on telling them that they must remain firm and fair, but courageous.

“You know one thing, a man of integrity cannot be intimidated. You don’t expect a man with integrity to be subservient. No. It is wrong for you to think that way, because time is his witness. Sacrifices are to be made if we are to come out of the woods.’’

An elated CJN hailed the  state government for improving on judicial infrastructure and providing judicial officers with conducive environment and improved facilities to function.

He urged other states to emulate “the Rivers example” by ensuring adequate funding and facilities for the Judiciary to function.

Wike said his administration’s decision to improve on the infrastructure of federal courts in the state was not out of its love for profligacy, but for the realisation that the people of Rivers State are the primary beneficiaries of the services to be rendered by the courts, irrespective of its owner.

He noted that his administration was welcomed by a weather-beaten Judiciary, left in ruins by the immediate past administration, who left courts in the state shot for over one year.

Wike said, being mindful of the importance of a functional justice administration system in a democracy, his administration took it upon itself to restore the court system in the state to its appropriate state to enable it function to the benefit of the people.

“We have no regret about the resources we have deployed for this purpose as long as the interests of the people of Rivers State are duly served,” Wike said, and promised to ensure the continued maintenance of all facilities in the new NICN court complex.

He regretted what he described as the threat to judicial independence and  stressed the need for the sustenance of the independence of the Judiciary.

Wike urged judges and other judicial officers to always be guided by the law, their conscience and oath of office in dispensing justice irrespective persons and interests.

Justice Adejumo, who told the history of the humble beginning of the NICN’s division in Port-Harcourt, regretted the negative impact of the closure of courts in Rivers State, during the last days of the immediate past administration, on the court’s activities.

The NICN President, who said the court complex surpassed his expectation, however, cautioned that the court would not be swayed by the state’s gesture to pervert justice in its favour or stray from its tenet of ensuring justice to whom justice is due irrespective whose ox is gored.

He told the gathering how he brought to Wike’s attention the many benefits that would be derived by the state and its people, from a functional NICN division in the state capital.

Adejumo added that when he approached Wike for assistance, there were about 950 cases pending before the Port Harcourt division, “and I drew his attention to the risk and cost to the litigants and lawyers in the state.

“He (Wike) promised to provide a befitting court for us within 12 months. I thought he was joking. But, here we are today. We thank you, we thank you, we salute you. This is a federal court. You owe no duty investing the state’s resources in providing this edifice for us.

“But, let me put it on record unequivocally, that this is the first time, in the history of our court, that any state Chief Executive will do what you have done. It will linger on forever in our memory at the National Industrial Court of Nigeria, that a man called Wike came, he saw and conquered,” the NICN president said.

He acknowledged the quality of work done in the court complex, the facilities provided, including the fixtures and fittings. He said  the government went beyond his expectation.

Adejumo, before ending his speech, accede to the request by the state Solicitor-General, Mrs. Florence Fiberesima, which Okocha amplified, that  cases which emanated from the division, but currently being heard in adjoining divisions, be promptly returned to the newly commissioned Port Harcourt division.

He added that, not only will the new court complex be put to use from the next Legal Year, beginning from September, he has directed the deployment of four judges to the Port-Harcourt division to occupy the four courtrooms in the new court house.

Okocha, who expressed delight about the size and magnitude of the structure, said: “I have always believed that our temples of justice must be housed in imposing and majestic edifices, such as the one before us today; so that everyone, who comes here to transact business, will know that something great, something good and something important is happening in  this building.

He hailed the governor for improving on judicial infrastructure in the state. Okocha noted that the government has also worked on the state High Court headquarters building in Port Harcourt and the buildings housing the Port Harcourt divisions of the Federal High Court and Court of Appeal.

Okocha restated the request by Mrs. Fiberesima that all cases from the Port-Harcourt division, currently pending in other divisions, be returned to the newly commissioned Port-Harcourt complex.

Justice Iyayi-Lamikanra thanked the governor for his many positive gestures to the state Judiciary, which she said had not only improved on the working condition of judicial officers, but had also enhanced the pace of justice administration in the state.

She said the decision to build an edifice for the NICN was not only a manifestation of the governor’s desire to extend development beyond the institutions of the state, but a clear demonstration of his inflicting support to effective justice delivery

The state’s Chief Judge expressed gratitude to the CJN for his prompt intervention when State High Court headquarters was attached on May 11, this year “by some unscrupulous litigants and criminal elements, who attempted to close down the court headquarters.”

The incident, she said, reminded one of the closure of the court from June 10, 2014 to May 27 May 2015, and until 29 May 2015, when Wike opened it for business on assuming office.

The court complex Mrs. Fibere-sima, in her opening remarks, took the gathering through the court’s complex when she gave a detailed description of the structure and its composition.

She said the construction of the building lasted 15 months from March 1, 2017 when ground breaking ceremony was done.

The state’s Solicitor General said the ground floor of the four-storey building has the main entrance foyer, two lifts; judges’ entrance, with a lift;  a car park, restaurant, a kitchen and room for electrical appliances. The floor, she added also houses the security house, a 400kva power generating set and a 500kva transformer.

The first floor, she said, consists of a meeting room, a Registry, a clinic, lawyers’ lounge, the litigation room, an office, a library, a convenience and data room.

Mrs. Fiberesima explained that the second and third floors house the four courtrooms, with two each per floor.

She added: “Both floors also contain judges’ chambers, rest rooms, offices of courts’ Secretaries and Registrars, etc.”

The fourth floor has  two legal research rooms, general administration office; offices for the Head of Administration, the Head of Account, Head of Division and the Secretary.”

She said the absence, before now, of a conducive work environment for the NICN in the state had occasioned hardship on on litigants and lawyers, who had to always travel to other jurisdictions like Enugu, Bayelsa, Calabar and Owrri, with the attendant cost and risk, to have their cases heard.

Mrs Fiberesima noted that “with the commissioning of this befitting edifice,  these problems been effectively resolved’’.

  • Wike’s golden three years in Rivers

For over six weeks, Rivers  State  held the entire country spell-bound. The Third Year Anniversary Celebration of the Wike administration brought to the fore, the fundamentals of good governance in the face of governance failure in majority of the states of the Federation.

The superlative performance of Governor Wike brought into focus the extreme and disheartening failure of the APC Federal Government.  Therefore, everyone, including well-meaning leaders of all persuasions  gravitated towards Rivers State to identify with a people’s leader.  A compassionate governor.

In the course of the third year anniversary of Governor Wike, which was marked by the commissioning of key projects and the flagging off of new ones, several leaders described him in different  glowing terms.

But one strand of description stood out as it featured at different commissioning ceremonies in the health sector. It came from the leader of the medical professionals who could not hide their joy. This beneficiary-assessment was not induced. It came from a pure heart.

Rivers State Chairman of the Nigerian Medical Association, Dr Datonye Alasia in a burst of inspiration declared that under Governor Wike, Rivers State has enterred a golden era in healthcare delivery.

Though, Dr Alasia viewed his assessment purely from the lenses of the profits that accrued to his profession, his assessment  applied to the entire state  and other key sectors.

From road infrastructure to education to judiciary through to empowerment  and workers welfare, Governor Wike reached out to the people of Rivers State in the course of the first three years of his first term.  He proved the relevance of having  a prepared  leader in Government House.

    ROAD INFRASTRUCTURE

All through the three years of Governor Wike’s administration, all the three senatorial districts have benefited from key road projects. Several of these roads have helped to connect agricultural centres to Port Harcourt and other parts of the country.

In the course of the third year anniversary, another set of roads were completed, while others were flagged off. These roads provided the right linkages and helped to boost the economy of the state.

The Garrison-Trans-Amadi- Slaughter-Woji-Elelenwo Road is one of the major highlights of the anniversary.  Abandoned at about 30percent by the immediate past failed Amaechi administration, Governor Wike completed this road through diligent supervision and funding.

Another road thrown up during the third year anniversary of Governor Wike is the Woji-Elelenwo Dual Carriageway and Bridge.  The failed Amaechi administration ran away from this road because of the sheer funding requirement.  Governor Wike dutifully funded and supervised  this road for two years and delivered it to the people of Rivers State.  The road has cut travel time between Eleme and Port Harcourt.

The 22.3 kilometer Airport–Ipo-Omademe -Ozuoha Road in Ikwerre Local Government Area was an economic gift to the people of the area who are predominantly farmers. This road was commissioned during the governor’s third year anniversary.

Governor Wike rolled out about 100 neighbourhood  roads across the state to boost the living standard of the people.

In Elele-Alimini, the Rivers State Governor constructed and commissioned 19 roads to lift the area. For the people of Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni (ONELGA), the Wike administration completed 11 beautiful roads. In Okrika Local Government Area, 15 roads were constructed for the good people  of Okochiri Kingdom .

In Port Harcourt Township, Governor Wike  used the Third Year Anniversary Celebration to bless the communities  with key roads.  They include: Bishop Johnson Street, Creek Road, Bishop Fubara Street, Captain Amangala Street, Tourist Beach Street and Abacha Road.

The icing on the cake for road infrastructure was the completion and commissioning  of the Obiri-Ikwerre Airport Road.  This road is a beauty to behold and a wonderful  example of good governance.

The Third Year Anniversary Celebration of the Wike administration also witnessed the flag off of the construction of Bolo Internal Roads and Eteo-Sire-Bariyira-Nonwa-Kira Road. The implication is that the delivery of projects will continue unabated.

    HEALTH SECTOR

    DEVELOPMENT

The health sector featured prominently  during the third anniversary of Governor Wike’s administration. The quality of projects commissioned showed clearly that healthcare delivery will improve in the state.

The Deima Denni-Fiberesima Doctors’ Quarters at the Braithwaite Memorial Specialist Hospital was flagged off by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo and delivered by the administration of Governor Wike in record time.

This residential facility will serve as morale booster to doctors as it will encourage them to serve the people faithfully.

As part of the third anniversary, Governor Wike completed and delivered the Mgbuosimini Health Centre and the Primary Health Building in Port Harcourt.  These two projects are targeted at developing the Primary Healthcare of the people.

The Training of qualified medical doctors and other health professionals to promote quality healthcare received attention as the Wike administration completed and commissioned the Medical College at the Rivers State University.

The growth of this sector is guaranteed as Governor Wike is still developing key projects across the state.

    GREAT EDUCATIONAL PROJECTS

This is one sector that proved to the world that Governor Wike believes in the future of Rivers State.  Project after project came to the fore as Rivers people celebrated  the beauty of performance.

These were projects that defined the very essence of visionary leadership.  Three pilot projects for the introduction of Boarding Education were unveiled.

Government Girls Secondary School, Rumuokwuta, Nyemoni Grammar School, Abonnema and Birabi Memorial Grammar School, Bori highlighted the success of the education   policies of Governor Wike.

At Onne, the Rivers State Government rolled out Government Secondary School, Onne, while Model Primary School, Mgbuosimini was commissioned.

The Faculty of Science and Technical Education Building at the Rivers State University came on stream while Governor Wike flagged off the construction of the Student Union Government Secretariat at the Rivers State University.

Educational advancement constitutes a major plank of the New Rivers Vision. Governor Wike sees education as a fundament route towards the empowerment of the next generation.

    ADMINISTRATION OF JUSTICE

Through consistent investments, Governor Wike has elevated Rivers State into the Judicial Hub of the South-South.  From a state with a negative image that the Former Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi closed the courts for two years, Governor Wike has improved access to justice.

In the course of the Third Year Anniversary Celebration of the Wike administration, the National Industrial Court flagged off by the President of the National Industrial, Justice Adejumo was commissioned by the Chief Justice Of Nigeria, Justice Onoghen.  The construction of the National Industrial Court has addressed the challenges of litigants going to Bayelsa, Imo and Enugu for their labour matters.

The Court of Appeal, Port Harcourt Division was in a mess. It was on this premise that Governor Wike offered to intervene.  Today, that intervention, the first of its kind has led to the delivery of a brand new Court of Appeal with enhanced facilities.

    CIVIL SERVANTS WELFARE

The welfare of Rivers workers has always been prioritised by Governor Wike.  The love for workers was exhibited during the third anniversary of Governor Wike.

The administration unveiled a 24-number 3-Bedroom Flats for Civil Servants in Port Harcourt.  To ensure the sustenance of this project, the Rivers State Governor organised a facility manager for the civil servants residential quarters.

As part of the Third Year Anniversary Celebration of the Wike administration, the National President of NLC, Comrade Ayuba Wabba was  invited by the Rivers State Governor to lay the foundation for the construction of the Rivers State NLC Secretariat.

    SPECIAL PROJECTS

Certain critical projects that touch the lives of the people were inaugurated by the Wike administration as part of the third anniversary.  These projects are vital to the development of the economy of the state.

They include: The Emmanuel Aguma House formerly  known as Produce House, which was allocated to agencies of the United Nations and other international organisations.  This structure was remodelled by the Wike administration.  This building was revived from the dead.

The Rex Lawson Cultural Centre was inherited by Governor Wike at 30 percent completion.  In 120 days, Governor Wike financed and supervised it to completion.

The Rivers State Traditional Rulers Secretariat was flagged off and completed during the Wike administration.  Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa-ad Abubakar performed these two major functions.  This is the best Traditional Rulers Secretariat in the country, with special facilities.

It was in the course of the Third Year Anniversary Celebration of the Wike administration that the construction of the Real Madrid Football Academy was flagged off by the President of Confederation of African Football, Ahmad Ahmad. This event attracted the global sporting press and football family.  It was a defining moment for football as a business.

    NATIONAL INTEGRATION/POLITICS WITHOUT BITTERNESS

Beyond the practical gains of showcasing Nigeria’s best performing governor for close to two months, the Third Year Anniversary Celebration of the Wike administration was used to foster national integration and national unity.

As a statesman, Governor Wike carefully selected leaders from all divides and international community to commission projects executed for the good of Rivers people.

There were  the ingredients of peer review, friendship, international cooperation  and regional integration.  Every community was given a sense of belonging.

The European Union Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr Ketil Karlson commissioned the Emmanuel Aguma House formerly known as Produce House, the British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Paul Awkright commissioned the Government Girls Secondary School, Rumuokwuta, the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Walter Onoghen commissioned National Industrial Court and Appeal Court Complex, General Abdulsalami Abubakar commissioned the Garrison-Trans-Amadi- Slaughter-Woji-Elelenwo road while Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar commissioned the Isiokpo Internal Roads.

Delta State Governor, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa commissioned Mgbuosimini Health Centre/Primary School, Former President Goodluck Jonathan commissioned the Ozuoha-Ipo-Omademe Road , Former PDP Acting National Chairman, Senator Ahmed Makarfi commissioned Nyemoni Grammar School, Abonnema while Senate Minority Leader, Senator Godswill Akpabio commissioned Omoku Internal Roads. Ekiti State Governor, Ayo Fayose commissioned Elele-Alimini Internal Roads, PDP National Chairman, Prince Uche Secondus commissioned Creek Road and 24-number 3bedroom Flats for Civil Servants was commissioned by Former Plateau State Governor , Senator Jonah David Jang.

Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa-ad Abubakar commissioned the Traditional Rulers Secretariat, Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi commissioned the Rex Lawson Cultural Centre while the Obi of Onitsha , Igwe Nnaemeka Achebe commissioned Abacha Road .

Politically, Governor Wike used the third anniversary to emphasise the relevance of politics without bitterness.  Political leaders may be from different political parties, but there must be meeting points to foster development.

On that note, Senate President Bukola Saraki commissioned the Obiri-Ikwerre Airport Road, Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt Hon Yakubu Dogara commissioned the Woji-Elelenwo Dual Carriageway and Bridge while Sokoto State Governor, Aminu Tambuwal commissioned the MedicalCollege at the Rivers State University and the Birabi Memorial Grammar School, Bori.  These three leaders are members of the APC.

    BLESSED BY GOD

It was a celebration that started and ended with God. A dedication and Thanksgiving Service was held at Winners Chapel D/Line. All through the programmes, there was no casualty or untoward story, despite visitors coming from across the globe. At the end, another Thanksgiving Service was held at Cathedral Anglican Church of Saint Paul in Port Harcourt.

The Blessing of God placed Rivers State  on top and made it an international reference point. While others struggled to survive, Rivers State under the leadership of Governor Wike has become Nigeria’s centre of development and international recognition.  For three years, Governor Wike has deepened the process of pro-people governance.

  • Rivers APC chair: Wike must face probe

•I’ve no comment on the matter, says commissioner

RIVERS State Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Ojukaye Flag-Amachree, has called on President Muhammadu Buhari and anti-graft agencies to probe the source of money used by Governor Nyesom Wike to acquire his sprawling property on Ada-George Road in Port Harcourt.

He said the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and Independent Corrupt Practices and other related offences Commission (ICPC) must take interest in the matter.

In the same vein, the APC chair noted President Buhari, who is fighting corruption, must let the truth be known, especially with Wike allegedly forcibly acquiring neighbours houses.

Flag-Amachree spoke with reporters in Port Harcourt yesterday, declaring that since the creation of Rivers on May 27, 1967, never had any governor recklessly acquired or built property while in office, the way Wike was doing.

Shortly before leaving office in 2015 as minister of state for Education, Wike erected a magnificent one-storey building behind Government House, Port Harcourt, where he mostly operates from.

He  started the Ada-George mansion in his Rumueprikom hometown in Obio/Akpor Local Government, shortly after his inauguration.

Rivers APC chairman said: “It is no news that the Wike-led administration has failed abysmally in the governance of Rivers State. A critical assessment of the educational, health, agriculture, social infrastructure, job creation and security sectors leaves a pitiable testimony and a soured taste in the mouth, save for the charade of projects’ commissioning displayed to insult the sensibilities of Rivers people.

“Three years and counting, Wike has consistently lavished the resources of the poor people of Rivers State on choice property on Ada-George Road, Port Harcourt, where he owned only a single structure before he took the oath of office (on May 29, 2015) to protect life and property.

“While Rivers people languish in poverty, tuition fees of their children on Rivers State government’s scholarship abroad are stopped and workers of TIMARIV (Rivers Traffic Management Authority) sacked and the agency disbanded, among others, Wike is acquiring more property running into billions of naira, with threats to revoke the Certificates of Occupancy of the people who have refused to sell their property to him.

“Irrefutable records provide evidence that while Wike spends whooping sums of money to pay off the property owners, expatriate personnel have been contracted for the design, building, furnishing and securing of the latest property he acquired for himself.

“As I speak, he has closed down and paid off a school (private), which formerly was about five property from his known residence. Rivers governor has succeeded in completing more projects for himself, as compared with projects in his own Obio/Akpor LGA in the last three years.”

Flag-Amachree pleaded with Buhari to direct the Inspector-General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, EFCC and ICPC to investigate Wike to curb his incessant mismanagement.

Rivers APC chairman said: “We empathise with the people whose property Wike has forcefully taken and for those who have refused to yield to the temptation and pressure being mounted on them by the Rivers governor, our promise is simple: in 2019, Wike will give account of his service to Rivers people.”

Commissioner for Information and Communications Chief Emma Okah, refused to speak on the matter yesterday when contacted on phone.

  • Saraki, Wike, Tambuwal, Ortom in defection talks

It was meant to be a gathering to pray for a politician’s mother, but yesterday’s session in Ilorin was more than that.

Politicians latched onto the prayer to smoothen defection talks between the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the Reformed-All Progressives Congress(R-APC)—the conclave of aggrived APC members.

The secret session was between PDP National Chairman Uche Secondus and some aggrieved APC bigwigs, led by Senate President Bukola Saraki.

Also yesterday, former President Goodluck Jonathan held a meeting with former Military President Gen. Ibrahim Babangida in Minna.

The two-hour meeting was described as “private”.

Some APC governors, PDP governors and PDP leaders took advantage of the prayer for the repose of the soul of Alhaja Aishat Baraje, the mother of Kawu Baraje, a leader of the R-APC to fine tune the APC men’s defection plan.

APC Deputy National Chairman Lawal Shuaibu (North) and Adeniyi Adebayo (South) attended the prayer but the governors and the PDP chiefs thereafter held a private session at the GRA Ilorin home of the Senate president.

Saraki returned to Ilorin on Tuesday, received by a large crowd – obviously to make a political statement.

At the session were Governors Abdulfatah Ahmed (Kwara); Nyesom Wike (Rivers); Samuel Ortom(Benue) and Aminu Waziri Tambuwal (Sokoto), who is also a presidential aspirant.

Others are: Secondus, another presidential aspirant and former Jigawa State Governor Sule Lamido; Senator Barnabas Gemade; Baraje and Speaker of Kwara State House of Assembly Ali Ahmad, among others.

A source at the session, who spoke in confidence, said: “After the prayer session for Baraje’s mother, we felt it necessary to discuss mutual issues bordering on the talks between the PDP and R-APC.

Our talks centred on how some APC and R-APC leaders will join forces in 2019 to change the status quo. It is certainly convenient for PDP at this bend to woo potential defectors who might add value to its electoral value in 2019.

“All these leaders are heavyweights who PDP cannot gloss over. So, the meeting was to consolidate ongoing negotiation ahead of mass defections from APC to the main opposition party.”

The source added: “Of course, you do not need a soothsayer to tell you that Saraki is the biggest fish that the PDP is after. He is also a rallying point of leaders in R-APC and the people of North-Central.”

It was learnt that the PDP had agreed to hand over the structure of the party to  Saraki; sharing of party’s position  on 60-40  or 40-60  ratio; and the concession of  two Senate seats and the governorship slot  to Saraki’s camp and R-APC in Kwara.

On Ortom and Gemade, the source said:  “The PDP has now opened talks with the Benue governor as part of steps to consolidate its grip on North-Central. We are targeting Kwara, Kogi, Benue, Plateau, Nasarawa, Niger and the FCT.

“Do you expect the PDP to fold its hands when the governor said he was done with APC and available to any party? The opposition party is wooing him, it is left for him to return to PDP if the terms are acceptable. If Ortom defects, the PDP can conveniently boast of  a likely control of four states in the geopolitical zone.

One of the governors confirmed that “issues of common interest on 2019 came up for about one and a half hours.”

“There were proposals here and there but you will know the details in the fullness of time.”

PDP National Publicity Secretary Kola Ologbondiyan said: “We only went to Ilorin to commiserate with Alhaji Kawu Baraje. He is a Nigerian and we are open to all Nigerians. We have the interest of every Nigerian at heart. We also went to Sokoto State to commiserate with the governor and the people of the state but you are not asking questions along this line.”

Ologbondiyan also told our correspondent in Ilorin: “It is a brotherhood meeting. Our leaders met and they shared thoughts on the future of Nigeria and how to improve on the living condition of Nigerians and how to make Nigeria a better place for all to live in.

“It was a convergence of notable Nigerians. Do not forget that the essence of today was to commensurate with Alhaji Baraje on the death of his mother.

“When politicians meet, they must discuss politics and how to improve on the standard of living of Nigerians. It will not be wrong to say that some issues were discussed.”

On Saraki’s planned return to PDP, he said: “I do not know when Saraki and Baraje will publicly declare their defection. I cannot speak on that.”

Ortom, who also visited Ahmed, told reporters that the Benue State APC issued him a red card and he hoped that the national leadership could reverse the decision. He added that the national leadership is the larger body capable of upturning the decision of the state chapter.

Wike said: “We came here to sympathise with Alhaji Abubakar Baraje over the death of his loving mother. We prayed for the family.

“Baraje is a politician and you expect politicians to rally round him at this time that he lost his mother.”

He added: “When you see your colleagues, you need to compare notes and do peer review on what you are doing in your respective states.

“However, we came purposely to engage in the eight days prayers for the late mother of Abubakar Baraje “.

Ahmed said he was yet to take a decision on his political future.

In a statement by his spokesman Dr. Muideen Akorede, the governor said he remained in the APC. “The presence today in Ilorin of Senate President Bukola Saraki, PDP Chairman Prince Uche Secondus, Governor Samuel Ortom, Governor Aminu Tambuwal and Governor Nyesom Wike, ex-Governor Sule Lamido of Jigawa, Senator Lawal Shuaibu, Senator Barnabas Gemade and other prominent political figures was for the burial rites of the late mother of respected politician, Alhaji Kawu Baraje and was not for the purpose of a political realignment.

“While I have not been briefed on any planned defection, I am aware that my principal and other political leaders in the state are gradually being shown the way out of the APC.”

But Secondus’ shuttle to Ilorin caught Kwara PDP leaders unawares. They could not receive him.

State Chairman Chief Iyiola Oyedepo said: “Actually, the National Chairman and the National Organising Secretary spoke with me when they were in Sokoto about their trip to Ilorin.

“They wanted me to meet them at the airport but I was out of town. They told me they were coming to commiserate with Baraje.”

In Abuja, Senator Shehu Sani said: “I can confirm we are talking with the PDP and we are talking with the APC and what is pushing us out of the APC is inherent injustice, marginalisation and inequity that have visited us. We have been treated badly by the party in the last three years. But we appreciate the fact that we have a chairman, in the person of Comrade Adams Oshiomhole.

“We are also exploring options of getting out of the party or remain in the party. So, the issue is still on discussion. Our decisions will be in a matter of weeks and not in the matter of months where we are going to review whether we will remain in the party or we will go to cross the red sea out of Egypt to the promised land.

“It is very clear that we should vote for people, irrespective of their political affiliation, those who can deliver us out of Egypt and to the Promised Land. We should move away from that thinking that one political party can solve the problems of Nigeria.

“The challenge is the crisis and the problems we face as a nation today cannot be addressed without a national consensus and without a collective approach to our national problems.

“In a situation where we think the President has monopoly of wisdom and the solution to the problems, we are simply deceiving ourselves. President Muhammadu Buhari alone cannot solve the problem of Nigeria. It is important for him to be honest and understand that. It is also important for the APC to understand that.”

But  a chieftain of the APC in Kaduna, Alhaji Kailani Mohammed, said the 2019 presidential race would be a walkover for President Muhammadu Buhari despite the “gang-up against him”.

He said greedy and selfish politicians were behind the killings in the North Central region.

Mohammad, an ally of President Buhari, said selfish politicians were causing the insecurity to discredit Buhari’s administration.

Mohammed, who was the Chairman “Buhari Votes Guard and Awareness”, said.

“It is alleged that politicians sponsor thugs and hoodlums who are responsible for most community skirmishes and killings in the country that have sent many Nigerians to the great beyond.

“In this direction, the police have invited President of the Senate Bukola Saraki over an allegation that he sponsored some political thugs that have been unleashing terror in Kwara State,” he said, adding that the revelation by the leader of the Middle Belt Peace Network, Jayeola Mohammed, that Senator Jonah Jang, a member of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and former Plateau State Governor, once vowed to make Plateau ungovernable for Lalong is something that is worrisome.

“Mohammed further claimed that Jang, who was recently arrested by the DSS over issues bordering on corruption and abuse of office, had sworn to extinguish the peace of Plateau State and enshrine anguish and despair by empowering youths in the area with weapons.

“Security agencies should rise up to this challenge and ensure that those who kill daily to promote and protect their political hemisphere must be brought to book. It is quite disheartening that our politicians have turned themselves into security threats in the country. They use human lives as shield to promote their political ambitions.

“Human lives should not be devalued by killings as part of political games. No matter how highly placed, offenders must be prosecuted and adequate justice be meted out to serve as deterrents to others of like minds.

“No Nigerian is bigger than the law. It is time for government to wield the big sick against vicious politicians who daily foment trouble for the country and her peoples so that the rest of us smaller mortals will be secured from the high and mighty,

“All these they are doing to discredit this government, but God and the masses of Nigeria are behind President Muhammadu Buhari. By God’s grace, 2019 presidential election will be a walk over for President Buhari, despite the gang up against him,” Mohammed said.

    Meet Saraki

Some governors of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) stormed Ilorin, Kwara State, on Wednesday for the fidau prayer of late mother of former nPDP chairman, Alhaji Abubakar Baraje.

The governors on the trip were Samuel Ortom (Benue), Nyesom Wike (Rivers) and Abdulfatah Ahmed (Kwara).

  • Wike, Lamido flay poll

RIVERS State Governor Nyesom Ezenwo Wike and former Jigawa State Governor Sule Lamido have flayed the Ekiti State governorship election.

Wike, in a statement by his Special Assistant on Electronic Media Simeon Nwakaudu, said the poll was the worst political robbery in the nation’s democratic history.

The governor said the APC-led Federal Government would not be able to replicate the “Ekiti political robbery in Rivers  State because  Rivers people  are fully  prepared”.

Wike, who spoke  yesterday at the Anglican  Cathedral Church of Saint Paul, Port Harcourt during the Thanksgiving Service to mark the end of Third Year Anniversary Celebration of his administration, said: “Don’t be worried about what happened in Ekiti State.  We are prepared. It will not happen  here in Rivers State.

“I have never experienced that kind of robbery in politics.  I told my colleagues, do not give  them any chance. Most of them in APC are happy that they will repeat the same thing in Rivers State. We are waiting, come and repeat. Let your spirit not be down, work hard and victory  will be ours,” he said.

Lamido, who is the presidential aspirant under the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), said: “The election process in Ekiti was heavily militarised; and I know it shouldn’t be a surprise because we are being led by a former military General ,who was also a former military Head of State, who was known for arresting political leaders.

“Number two, you see, he (Buhari) only says politicians are this, politicians are that, which means he is not a politician.

“So, I think the election in Ekiti, to me, if it is the wish of the people that is announced as the result, I have no quarrels with it. I hope, also, that this is not the kind of thing we are going to experience in 2019 elections because it will spell doom for democracy.

“You see, even before the election, there was this acrimony; the atmosphere was very tensed. You see, sending 30,000 policemen to Ekiti for a governorship election is very worrisome.”

He expressed confidence that PDP will reclaim power in 2019, adding that PDP has learnt from its past mistakes.

  • Wike condemns attack on governor

Rivers State Governor Nyesom  Wike yesterday condemned the “brazen attack on Ekiti State by the Nigeria Police”.

Speaking at a news conference at the Government House Port Harcourt ,  Wike said: “I wish to also draw the attention of the people of Rivers State to the fact that what is happening at Ekiti State is clearly a foretaste of what the APC-led Federal Government has planned to unleash in our State and in deed, the entire country, in their desperate attempt to rig 2019 general elections and retain or return to power having performed woefully and lost the support of the generality of Nigerians.

“As a matter of fact, people did not quite believe me when I told the world that the APC-led Federal Government has plans to assassinate me to enable them capture Rivers State because they know they have no electoral foothold in the State.

“Today, the whole world has seen how Governor Ayo Fayose was barely lucky to have escaped the State-sponsored attempt at his life with a fractured hand and bruised face because, with him around, hale and hearty, they will never win the Saturday elections free and fair in Ekiti.

“In the face of these challenges therefore, I wish to call on the people of Rivers State to be prepared to fight and defend their rights to freely and democratically elect their leaders in the 2019 general elections.

“?I wish to commend and congratulate the irrepressible Governor Ayo Fayose and the people of Ekiti State for standing up and standing firm in defence of their rights to freedom, democracy and good governance.

“I want to assure you of the support of the Government and people of Rivers State at these trying times. You need not fear as God will surely defeat your enemies and grant you a resounding victory come Saturday 14th July 2018.”
