Our relegation an act God, says Wikki FC captain

Mustapha Ibrahim, Captain of Wikki Tourists FC of Bauchi, said on Friday that the club had accepted its relegation to the lower division of the Globacom Premier League as an “act of God.’’

“We will remain together and forge ahead in spite of our relegation. We have accepted our predicament. It is not our wish to be relegated; it is the will of God. We have resolved to remain in the team and fight to return to the premier division. This type of tragedy has happened before and we took the club back to the elite division. We shall do it again,’’ Ibrahim told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Bauchi.

On whether the relegation will affect salaries, Ibrahim said:“The management has promised not to tamper with our salary and our match bonuses. This is very encouraging and we commend the state government for the gesture.”

The Chairman of the club, Suleiman Abdulahi, blamed the misfortune of the club partly on inconsistencies on the part of the technical crew. He observed that the crew made unnecessary changes in the line-up during matches which caused lack of cohesion in the team.

“These inconsistencies led to a lack of coordination and cohesion in the team,’’ Abdulahi noted.

Abdullahi also deplored what he called the club’s fans’ failure to conduct themselves well during home matches, citing the club’s encounter with El Kanemi Warriors of Maiduguri.

“In the 73rd minute when the home team was trailing 0-1, the supporters invaded the pitch, manhandled the referee and beat him to a coma. If the fans had given us the chance, within the remaining 17 minutes and possibly with additional time of at least five minutes, we could have recovered well enough to either equalise or win the match.

“But the time was wasted on the attack on the referee and so we lost an important home match that could have saved us from being relegated. It is like beating a judge in a court of law and still expects to get justice. It may never happen,” he said.

Abdullahi, however, expressed the optimism that the club would bounce back to the premier division, saying “it has learnt from past mistakes.’’

Aliyu Dan, the Chairman, Wikki Supporters Club, acknowledged the negative contributions of the supporters to the club’s misfortune. He, however, pledged that the leadership would ensure a change of attitude in the upcoming season and the return of the club to the premier division.

Usman Abass, the Media Officer of the club, also blamed the poor performance of the team on the absence of a “sound technical crew and indiscipline on the part of some players.’’

“Can you imagine that five key players refused to turn up for our final crucial match of the season against Dolphins of Port Harcourt for no reason? Those players were not punished and they still earned their salaries for the month,” he said.

Also reacting, Inusa Adamu, Chairman of Bauchi State Football Association, described the relegation as “embarrassing”, considering the huge resources expended on the team. He called on the management to concentrate on re-building the team to justify the huge resources being spent on the club.

NAN also reports that Wikki placed 18th on the 2012/2013 league table with 49 points, while Kano Pillars FC won the league.

    Wikki’s Abdul-Pele to stay on

Wikki Tourists head coach, Ahmed Abdul-Pele has said he will keep faith with the side in their campaign in the upcoming 2013/14 Nigeria National League (NNL) season.

The Bauchi-based side are among the sides that were relegated to the lower league at the end of the 2012/13 Glo Premier League season on Sunday.

Wikki finished the season’s campaign poorly on 19th in the 20-team elite league log on 49 points.

Abdul-Pele said it will be morally unjust for him to walk away from the side when it was in his hands they went down on relegation.

“I’m with my family right now observing some days off thereafter I’ll have discussion with the management and if they ask me to stay on, why not. I’ll surely stay to attempt to right the wrong that saw us go down on relegation.

“It will be inhuman to run away or abandon the team that fell down to the lower division in my tenure, I won’t have done justice to myself, the players, management and the supporters. I’ll like to suffer with the side and work extremely hard to bring them back to the Globacom Premier League where they truly belong,” Wikki handler said to supersport.com.

Abdul-Pele said he will strive to prevail on the players to stay back while he combs the Globacom Premier League sides to pick few players that will help the side’s comeback bid.

“I’ve absolute confidence in the crop of players that prosecuted the out-gone season, we didn’t go on relegation because they couldn’t play good football but for some reasons we’re not able to handle. I’ll like to hold onto the players by encouraging them to rally round the team in their dark hour to fight for comeback to the Premier League.

“I’ll just look for a handful of experienced players from the Premier League to fortify the side in vital areas and I’m sure with good motivation we’ll spend just one season in the lower league. Right now I’m doing everything to convince the players to stay. I pray they listen to me and together we’ll work to gain promotion,” Abdul-Pele said.

Wikki are on short break to resume early next month for their campaign in the Nigeria National League due to kick-off in November.

    • Hit Scorpions 2-0

Gombe United’s desire to continue the party which kicked off with last week’s defeat of league leaders Kano Pillars, hit the rocks Wednesday after they were defeated by host Wikki Tourists 2-0

Gombe United head coach, Maurice Cooreman had prior to Wednesday’s tie expressed hope that his side will further consolidate or better still pull a draw against the Bauchi side, but at the end of the 90 minute battle it was Wikki that had the last laugh.

Although Cooreman, admitted that the Bauchi-based side will be a hard nut to crack given their position on the log, he nonetheless remianed optimistic that the victory against Pillars will be a dream he failed to realise in Bauchi.

The Scorpions face second placed Bayelsa United in their last match at home, a tie which promises to be full of fire works as Bayelsa who are in contention for the title, will be throwing every arsenal into the game. Though Pillars look good as winners many believe that a slip in the last match could fire up a lot of changes.

Kwara Utd aim at maximum points against Wikki

Kwara United have vowed to take maximum points in their home game to Wikki Tourists today in the matchday 36 Glo Premier League tie at the Confluence Stadium, Lokoja.

The Afonja Warriors lost three points and three goals to Warri Wolves in a landmark ruling after the NFF’s Appeals Committee ruled their league tie against the Seasiders in favour of their opponents.

They were also initially banished to Abuja but the NFF’s Emergency Committee which sat in Abuja on Thursday listened to the pleas of Kwara United and only ordered them to play their last two home games of the season at next door neighbours, Lokoja.

Ahead of the tie, Kwara United’s head coach, Samson Unuanel has expressed the resolve of his players to beat visiting Wikki Tourists in the crucial league match.

He rued some key decisions that went against his team but stated that the Ilorin side would learn from the mistakes made in the ongoing season ahead of the forthcoming seasons.

“We will be ready as usual to beat Wikki just like we have done to other clubs that have visited us. We are not going to be deterred with the fact that we are playing away from Ilorin. We shall do our best to scoop all points,” Unuanel assured.

Kwara United are 11th with 48 points from 35 matches while their foes, Wikki are 18th with 45 points from same number of matches.

Sharks will see off Wikki —Abutu

Sharks midfielder, Jonah Abutu has assured that the Port Harcourt club will defeat Wikki Tourists on Wednesday.

Abutu, who was stand-in captain for Sharks in their 0-1 loss to Kano Pillars in a Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) on Saturday, is sure that the Tourists will suffer “at least two to three goals” defeat at the Sharks Stadium.

“I assure our fans back home that we are going to beat Wikki with at least two to three goals to make up for our loss to Kano Pillars and on behalf of the players I apologise for our loss even though the match officials made life difficult for us in Kano,” Abutu said.

The former Lobi Stars man, however, attributed their 0-1 to Kano Pillars to poor officiating.

He also saluted his teammates for putting up a fight in Kano before Gambo Mohammed’s goal just 17 minutes to time ensured NPFL champions, Kano Pillars claimed the full points.

“The team really played above average because we had a game-plan but the referee spoilt what would have been a good match. He did not give us our little advantage and he hardly allowed us play our game. We would have made a difference,” Abutu said.

“He was just giving them all the advantage throughout the game, balls (calls) that were supposed to be ours he will give it to them so all these things really frustrated us, these referee’s should help us to enjoy our game.”

Sharks currently have 36 points but sit outside of the top half of the NPFL standings.

EDJOMARIGWE EYES REPEAT FOR 3SC VS WIKKI

3SC winger Tony Edjomarigwe has told MTNFootball.com he wishes to score against Wikki today, like he did last season.

Edjomarigwe scored against Wikki in a 2-0 home win last season at same venue and he said he hopes for a repeat.

“We are ready for Wikki and going for the three points. I scored against them here last season as we won 2-0, I am looking forward to score in this one as we beat them again,” Edjomarigwe told MTNFootball.com

“We played a good football against Pillars but luck was not on our side

and now we need to make our points back in our home game. Fans are expecting a lot from us and we also need to make them happy as well.

“Our major problem now is that we don’t utilise our scoring chances and we always paid for it but the coaching crew are really working on it and

personally I will like to repeat last season action by scoring against them. Musa Raphael said Wikki will fall in Ibadan.

“That is football for you we play but don’t get the result we wanted but come on Sunday God will crown our effort with victory,” said the midfielder.

“With the look of things now all the players are not happy for not getting any victory in our away games but things will change as we have already got a clue in our games and we are ready to work on it.

Star forward Gbolahan Salami will return to action after an ankle injury kept him out of the trip to Pillars.

“I am happy to be back to action after I was sidelined for Kano Pillar clash,

I was not happy for not making the trip but I’m now fit to play, so Sunday will be another glorious day for me and my colleagues as well,” Salami vowed.

Wikki Tourists striker Alaba Johnson said they are poised for war against

3SC. “We know it is not going to be easy playing against 3SC in Ibadan, but we are ready for this football war. We will do our best,” he told MTNFootball.com.
