  • Ndidi sees yellow in City defeat, Iwobi fires blank in Everton loss

It was double migraine for Super Eagles midfielder Wilfred Ndidi as he bagged a yellow card in Leicester City 2-1 defeat by Liverpool on Saturday.

Ndidi who as usual was in action for 90 minutes was handed the yellow card in the 30th minute of the match by referee, Chris Kavanagh.

Ndidi was however not the only fox that saw the other side of the referee as teammates Jony Evans and Çağlar Söyüncü were also carded.

Liverpool forward and Senegal international Sadio Mane shot Liverpool into the lead in the 40th minute and also set up the added time penalty that was converted by James Milner.

Leicester City’s consolation goal was scored in the 80th minute by James Maddison.

The pain of losing was not an exclusive for Ndidi on Saturday as compatriot and Everton forward Alex Iwobi equally suffered a lone goal defeat by homers Burnley.

Iwobi like Ndidi was also in action for full 90 minute with Everton maintaining lion share of possession which unfortunately could not translate into goals at the Turf Moor.

Seventy two minute goal scored by Jeff Hendrick was all Burnley needed to seal victory and put smile on the faces of home fans and record only their second victory in six matches the first one being a 2-0 victory at home over visiting Norwich City last month, while Everton were recording their fourth defeat in six matches.

  • WILFRED NDIDI: Why I went back to school in UK

Ranked the best tackler in the world by a stats website whoscored.com, Nigeria and Leicester star Wilfred Ndidi is set to tackle the next phase of his career. To effectively do that, he told Taiwo Alimi he must first equipped himself by returning to the University.

At only 22 and the world seemingly at his feet, Leicester tough tackler Wilfred Ndidi is already thinking about the future. His recent enrolment and admission to study Business and Management at De Montfort University (DMU) was born out his strong inclination to secure a bright prospect for himself after a career in football.

Ndidi whose career has blossomed since moving to England in 2017 with World Cup and Africa Nations Cup appearances for Nigeria is eyeing a prospect in football related business in retirement.

Ndidi moved to England when he signed for Leicester from Belgian side K.R.C. Genk and has aspired to return to school ever since.

He said: “Since I moved to England I’ve been nursing that ambition to return to school to acquire new skills. It’s something I always to do because the opportunity was not there in Nigeria for me. I had the desire in Nigeria to continue my education in Nigeria but the opportunity was not there. I spent much of my time playing football.”

Ndidi put his plans into action last year when he volunteered to work with the University located in Leicester.

“I remember some of us (Leicester players) manning the university’s hotline and getting the opportunity to speak with students applying for clearing at DMU.  My club has a good relationship with DMU, and we joined the university staff to answer calls from students looking for advice on their course. “We made an acquaintance of Vice-Chancellor of DMU Dominic Shellard, who was happy to have us. He made us feel at home and I thought if I apply there I would not have any problem blending in.

Of course we received many calls from Leicester fans used the opportunity to say hello to us. It was an enjoyable moment.”

Ndidi noted that he won’t be the first Premiership star to school at MDU.

“Ji Sing Park, former Manchester United star study Management, Law and Humanities of Sport, here and even played for the school. DMU has a robust relationship with Premiership players and that is how I got the idea to also study here.”

To Ndidi’s excitement, his decision to acquire a university degree was greeted with greater excitement from his colleagues, Leicester management and his parents.

“When I broke the news to my parents I wanted to expand my scope of knowledge by returning to school, they were greatly excited.”

    Happy parents

“They are really proud but for me. Education is very important because growing up in Nigeria I wasn’t in school and then seeing other kids not been able to go to school because their parent could not afford it. It is just a personal thing for me that I want to expand myself and know a couple of things and understand.”

    They treat me nice

“The environment is really amazing, though I come [to school] been cool, no one knows when I step into the class and go. Sometimes I park further away from DMU so I can take a walk onto campus. I really like it.

I’m satisfied with the cooperation I’m getting from the teaching staff of the institution. Instead of sitting at home after training I come to DMU for my classes. The teachers have been amazing; they really try and help me understand.

Rather than just reading books they take time to explain things to me and they very well understand my training Schedule. I can come and go out as I like and they are really helping me and I’m coping quite well.”

Why Business and Management? Ndidi’s informed that his bigger plan revolves round this course.

He plans to set up a soccer academy which would help young Africans improve their football talents and at the same time keep them in school. “Back home (Nigeria) so many kids aren’t able to go to school because their parents can’t afford it. I want to set up a football resort where people can stay and play football while getting an education at the same time. I think it’s really important to try to learn things outside of your normal life. I want to do something that I can be fully part of so it’s important I know something about business and management, even though I’m still going to be in football.”

    Married life

Ndidi feels divine that he’s doing well for club and country and don’t want to take it for granted hence the reason he wants to give back to African kids. “It is inspiring that my name has been linked to the very best in Europe, at least in the area of tackling. I got married to my friend and woman and the Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt was memorable. For me whatever is happening I always say I am lucky enough that I am one of the few privileged to have played football. There are a lot of stories of how footballers from where I come from have made it big due to the talent but for me, I believe it’s my hard work and the luck that God has given me.

“I am just being real here – to come from where I come from, to be playing in the English Premier League and doing well. I don’t want to take that for granted. I’ve got to give back.” Ndidi also thinks that his club is playing well and will finish better than last season.

    Leicester target

“Leicester City can finish in the English Premier League top six this season,” he stated.

“We narrowly missed out on Europa League ticket last term. Top six? I would say top three [is possible] but we have to get the points out of the games before we can place ourselves at the top.

“After the draw against Chelsea we knew we could have won that game. It’s a mixed feeling for me because in the first half we were not up to it. We tried to comeback in the second half, with better spirit and we tried to push forward. As I said, it was a mixed feeling because we should have got the three points even after the first half. We competed well and that goes for other matches too thereafter.

“My goal came at the right time too. We’re not here to compete, we’re here to contend. All of the guys have a good spirit and we know what we want this season. Getting this point, we’re not really happy, we’re kind of sad because we dominated the second half which could have brought a better result for us. Yes! We could have won the match.

“We’re really pleased. I keep saying, the first half was really bad. I feel bad about it. There are lots of positives for us in the second half. We’ll try to take it to the next game because we know we can actually do it.”

The Nigerian still remembers French player N’Golo Kanté like yesterday.

At the time of his signing, Leicester were struggling under the weight of being such unlikely Premier League champions. Kanté, so integral to that remarkable triumph, was long gone. Nampalys Mendy and Daniel Amartey had both tried to replace him but failed.

In the last Premier League season, Kanté clocked up 130 successful tackles and interceptions combined at Chelsea while Ndidi ended with 153, more than any player in Europe’s top five leagues.

“I just go out there to do whatever coach tells me and I guess I do it well and that is why I keep coming back. When I came here (Leicester) I told myself that if I played very well then someday I would also be remembered as a great. I want to say that I’m close to that now.”

He also remembers Leicester marksman James Vardy in a special way. “Vardy is certainly one of the reasons why we are playing well. In the whole of England few strikers are like him. He’s smart and fast. Vardy for me is up there,” Ndidi added.

  • Rodgers lauds Ndidi after win over Tottenham

LEICESTER City’s boss Brenda Rodgers has hailed Nigerian midfielder Wilfred Ndidi and his teammates after their hard fought win over Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday.

Rodgers saw his Leicester City team fight back from a goal down to claim the entire three points at the King Power Stadium, thanks to goals from Ricardo Pereira and James Maddison.

With the win, it means that Leicester have suffered just one defeat in their last nine Premier League home games (W6 D2), after losing four in a row directly before that.

Reacting to the win, Rodgers rued Ndidi’s disallowed goal, but praised his wards for a good show in the second half.

“It was a wonderful performance. I thought the players were outstanding. We started the game with a great tempo, which sets the emotion in the stadium.

“It was just a case of preparing the players mentally for the second half. We had to adapt the system at half-time. The players deserve huge credit. The quality we showed was top-class against an outstanding team.

“Some of the offside decisions – it’s fine margins. Whatever the decision, you have to adapt and keep your focus on the game. The players did that very well,” he told the media.

  • VAR erases Ndidi, Serge Aurier goals in Leicester’s 2-1 win

Business minded Super Eagles midfielder Wilfred Ndidi shot his Leicester City side into the lead in the 26th minute against Spurs on Saturday but had the goal cancelled by VAR.

The Video Assistant Referee had ruled that the Nigerian international was off side and as such the goal could not hold.  Ndidi was however not the only one that jubilated first for scoring  and disappointed  later as Tottenham’s Serge Aurier equally suffered the same fate in the 67th minute when he grabbed what should have been the visitors second goal after red hot Harry Kane had scored  the first  in the 29th minute .

Gingered by Kane’s goal Spurs maintained a very strong momentum and looked like they were bent on running away with an away victory.

Serge Aurier celebrates before his goal was cancelled by VAR

Ricardo Pereira however leveled up for Leicester City in the 69th minute just two minutes after Serge Aurier’s goal was annulled by the VAR.

A rejuvenated Leicester City then consolidated with James Maddison getting a second goal in the 85th minute and the Foxes put up a good show to maintain the lead to the end of the match.

The victory of course gave Ndidi who was as usual in action for the entire duration of the match something to take home.

Compatriot Kelechi Iheanacho was however not listed and will be hoping to have an opportunity in Leicester next match when they take on Luton Town in the League Cup on Tuesday at the Kenilworth Road.

  • Ndidi in action as Leicester City triumph over Bournemouth

Wilfred Ndidi returned from a hamstring injury to help Leicester City claim a 3-1 victory over Bournemouth in a Premier League game on Saturday.

The 22-year-old was missing in action against Sheffield United and Newcastle United but after shaking off the injury problems, which ruled him out, he was handed a starting role against the Cherries.

The Nigeria international featured from start to finish in the encounter to help the King Power Stadium outfit stretch their winning run to three games.

Jamie Vardy opened the scoring in the 12th minute of the game but Callum Wilson equalised for the visitors three minutes later.

Youri Tielemans then gave Brendan Rodgers’ men the lead in the 41st minute before England international Vardy completed his brace in the 73rd minute.

  • Awoniyi watches as Mainz 05 suffer 6-1 demolition

Liverpool ace Taiwo Awoniyi watched from the bench as Mainz05 were taken to the cleaners by Bayern Munich in the Germany Bundesliga on Saturday.

Awoniyi who was listed but not fielded in the match it will be recalled enjoyed about 25 minutes action in the home tie against Borussia Mgladbach which ended 3-1 in favour of the visitors last week but was not in action against rampaging Bayern Munich on Saturday.

Mainz had shot into the lead in the 6th minute thanks to Jean-Paul Boëtius to the surprise of the home fans at the Allianz arena but it took Bayern 30 minutes to equalize through Benjamin Pavard and from then on it was goals galore for the Niko Kovač tutored side.

Nigeria born Austria international David Alaba and Robert Lewandowski were all on target. Mainz05 have thus conceded 9 goals in two matches scoring two. Mainz will next host Hertha BSC next week and will be hoping to return to winning ways and offer their fans opportunity to smile again.

     Ndidi and teammates celebrate

Awoniyi who was left out in Gernot Rohr’s squad to the last Nations cup is among the players lined up for September 10 international friendly against Ukraine in Kyiv.

In the English Premier League it was all smiles for super Eagles midfielder Wilfred Ndidi as Leicester City beat visiting Bournemouth 3-1 at the King Power Stadium. Super Eagles and Leicester City midfielder Wilfred Ndidi is looking forward to seeing more Nigerian young players effectively combine football with academics.

Ndidi who recently enrolled with De Montfort University (DMU) in Leicester City to study Business Management said the study will put him in better position to help young Nigerians who are ready to joggle football career with academics.

The former Genk ace expressed delight at finally getting the opportunity to pursue a management course without affecting his playing career.

Ndidi: No stopping the fun on the pitch

Leicester City, face Sheffield United away on Saturday. Ndidi who scored a 67th minute goal in the Foxes’ recent 1-1 draw away to Stamford Bridge will be hoping to re-enact the feat when they face Sheffield United at the Bramall Lane.

  • Ndidi on target as Leicester hold Chelsea

Chelsea manager Frank Lampard had to settle for a 1-1 draw against Leicester City in his first home match in charge on Sunday.

A second-half header by Wilfred Ndidi cancelled out Mason Mount’s early goal on Lampard’s home debut.

Chelsea raced into a quick lead when the 20-year-old player stole the ball from a dallying Ndidi and left Kasper Schmeichel with no chance with his shot in the seventh minute.

The goal capped an opening onslaught by the new-look Blues who were roared on by the home fans excited at the return of Chelsea’s all-time top scorer Lampard as manager.

  • Man U Move: Maguire thanks former Leicester City teammates

Manchester United new signing Harry Maguire has penned down what could pass for a thank you note for Super Eagles duo of Kelechi Iheanacho and Wilfred Ndidi and his other former teammates after sealing his move to Old Trafford.

“I am delighted to have signed for this great club,” Maguire told United’s official website. “I have thoroughly enjoyed my time at Leicester and would like to thank everyone at the club, and the fans, for their fantastic support over the past two seasons.

The former Leicester City Centre back successfully completed a £80million transfer to Manchester United on Monday and looks to debut for the new club against visiting Chelsea on Sunday.

The former Hull City ace signed a 6-year contract with an option for a further 12 months extension. The 26 year old was initially linked with both Manchester clubs over the summer but Leicester held out for their valuation with the fee now surpassing the £75million Liverpool paid Southampton for Virgil Van Dijk in January 2018.

Maguire who has made over 20 appearances for the Three Lions confessed that it was difficult to say NO, when the Manchester United offer was placed on the table

“When Manchester United come knocking on your door, it is an incredible opportunity.

“From my conversations with the manager, I am excited about the vision and plans he has for the team. It’s clear to see that Ole (Gunnar Solskjaer) is building a team to win trophies. I am now looking forward to meeting my new team-mates and getting the season started,” he enthused

Manchester United coach Gunnar Solskjaer who is looking forward to better finish this season is elated at the coming of Harry, describing him as one of the best centre-backs in the game.

Solskjaer said: “Harry is one of the best centre-backs in the game today and I am delighted we have secured his signature.

“He is a great reader of the game and has a strong presence on the pitch, with the ability to remain calm under pressure – coupled with his composure on the ball and a huge presence in both boxes. I can see he will fit well into this group both on and off the pitch.”

Maguire becomes United’s third signing of the summer, having last month completed deals for Swansea flyer Daniel James and Crystal Palace right-back Aaron Wan-Bissaka.

  • Iheanacho’s Leicester City ranked 40th best club in the world

Kelechi Iheanacho’s Leicester City have been ranked the 40th best club in the world. The Premier league side, who also have Nigeria international Wilfred Ndidi in their must play squad took first from the back in the Global Club Soccer top 40 rankings by a team of football researchers on opinion pool site 538.

The Foxes finished 9th on the log table last season with 52 points in 38 matches. It is safe to say it is different stokes for the two Eagles at the King Power Stadium. While Iheanacho who was dropped from the Super Eagles squad ahead of the ongoing Nations cup in Egypt was having little or no playing time compatriot Ndidi remained a regular for the club where they once stared alongside Algeria international Riyad Mahrez who has since moved over to Manchester city and who only last night stopped Nigeria from proceeding to the final of the Nations cup with his super strike at the last minute.

Interestingly Iheanacho played for Manchester City between 2015 and 2017 scoring 12 goals in 46 appearances.

Premier League defending Champions Manchester City topped the ranking with Champions league winners Liverpool occupying the third place behind Bundesliga Champions Bayern Munich while Barcelona and Chelsea round off the top five best clubs in the world.

Manchester United however finished 34th in the world behind the likes of Young Boys, PAOK and Eibar.

Football analysts at FiveThirtyEight came up with the system that saw Everton, who finished 12 points behind the Red Devils last season, eight places ahead in the table rankings.

The football researchers produced a Soccer Power Index (SPI) that ranks teams by giving them an offensive and defensive rating.

The ratings refer to the number of goals the team would be expected to score against an average team on a neutral field and a defensive rating that represents the number of goals they would be expected to concede.

These ratings produce an SPI rating which gives a percentage of available points – a win is worth three, a draw worth one, and a loss worth none.

Here are the Best 10 clubs according to the Ranking released Monday.

    1 – Manchester City

    2 – Bayern Munich

    3 – Liverpool

    4 – Barcelona

    5 – Chelsea

    6 – PSG

    7- Real Madrid

    8 – Atletico Madrid

    9 – Olympiacos

    10- Ajax
