  • Winner takes it all

    Winner takes it all

It was a moment of joy for the best graduating student of the Covenant University (CU) in Ota, Ogun State, Winner Deji-Folutile, as he received his scroll of honour at the varsity’s 11th convocation. ADENIKE COLE (300-Level Mass Communication) profiles the valedictorian.

Amid thunderous ovation, Winner Deji-Folutile walked to the podium to receive his scroll as the best graduating student. It was at the 11th convocation of the Covenant University (CU) in Ota, Ogun State.

The 21-year-old student graduated with a First Class from the Department of Architecture, clinching the school’s and his department’s highest Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 4.97. His success story is full of coincidences, which probably explain his success story.

Bishop David Oyedepo – the General Overseer of the Living Faith Church and Chancellor of the university – is Winner’s mentor, which was why he chose to study Architecture. To completely fit into his role model’s reputation as a symbol of quality leadership, Winner was elected to be the leader of the students’ council to acquire leadership skills.

Presenting the valedictorian to the large audience that graced the convocation, former Registrar Dr Olumuyiwa Oludayo described Winner as an achiever and a trailblazer.

He said: “Mr. Chancellor sir, it is gratifying to inform you that our overall best student this year is not only the best in academics, he is also the best chairman of student council.”

According to Winner, his journey to success did not start from campus, but from his secondary school days at the Faith Academy, also owned by Bishop Oyedepo.

He said: “From SSS 2, I could picture this day coming. Every day, I was writing it somewhere in my book that I wanted to be the Covenant University’s best graduating student and best student council chairman. So, I had dreamt about it and I worked for it both spiritually and academically.”

On how he achieved the feat, Winner whose father is a veterinary doctor and mother a journalist, noted that the Holy Spirit directed his activities. He added: “The first thing is that God is my strength, but I was determined too.”

How was he able to cope with the burden of union leadership and academic workload? He said: “God gave me grace and gave me lecturers who showed understanding. I remember my teachers would call my attention whenever I was losing focus. It took the grace of God to survive and maintain academic lead.”

Winner described his social life as “good”, saying he did not engage in love affair with any female student.

Mrs Olabisi, Winner’s mother, said the circumstance surrounding his birth informed the choice of his name. After marriage, Mrs Olabisi said she was childless for many years because she had Winner, noting that her son was a product of perseverance and strong belief in God.

She said: “Since I gave birth to him, it has been one victory story and another. Winner had the best West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) result in his school and he was the third best candidate in National Examination Council (NECO) result in Ogun State in 2012. Since he told us his ambition, we made it our prayer points. So, I am not surprised he is achieving his dreams.”

Winner, an indigene of Ilemeje Local Government Area of Ekiti State, described his success as “uncommon grace”, praising Bishop Oyedepo for investing in education.

He said: “Covenant University is a breeding ground for upright generation. We have received quality education and good values that can make us to explore our world. University degree is worthless without godly values. I cherish every moment I spent on the campus.”

Winner said he would go for his Master’s in the discipline and hopes to work in an interior design firm. He said: “My ambition is to use my unique creativity to design a new world for the generations to come.”

  • Foundation rewards research grant winner

The Prof Ayo Florence Ogunye Trust Fund University of Lagos (PAFOTFUL) has given N1 million to the first recipient of its research grant award competition.

Winner of the grant, Mr Olawale Olanipekun said at the award held in the UNILAG Senate chamber that he would use the prize to finance his research on “Modeling the fate of multi-component contaminant in porous media”.

He said: “One of the major challenges being faced by the people of the Niger Delta is that of polluted soil from crude oil. So I am working on using a method different from the one used by previous researchers to restore the soil. People have been considering crude oil as if it is a single contaminant, but in the pollution, there are multiple hydrocarbons, like polyaromatic and alyphatic hydrocarbons in the environment. So, I am approaching it from the angle of trying to cleanse the soil of the hydrocarbons, rather than digging up the soil and replacing it with another, where the contaminants, which have already adapted to the environment, can possibly grow back.”

Olanipekun, who has taught in the Department of Chemical and Petroleum Engineering of the institution for the past five years, believes that it is better to use a system called bio-immigration where the organisms in the same polluted environments are used to cleanse the soil.

The Director of the office of Advancement, Mrs Ibironke Salam, explained that the trust fund decided to award scholarship when it was unable to raise its target of N500 million for a professorial chair in the Department of Chemical Engineering. Since inception in 1990, it has raised N55, 934, 115.

She said the research grant competition was keenly contested by 10 applicants from various higher institutions in the country, from which three finalists were selected and Olanipekun emerged winner.

The Vice Chancellor, Prof Rahamon Bello, who is Olanipekun’s PhD supervisor, said UNILAG believes that research efforts would take care of the institution’s and the country’s needs.

He expressed gratitude to the donor of the foundation, Prof Ayo Ogunye for his selflessness in establishing the professorial chair through PAFOTFUL due to his love for the institution.
