  • Woman allegedly swindles church of N100m

The police in Ogun State have arrested a 39-year-old woman, Onyinyechi Iwuagwu, for allegedly swindling a church-based organisation of N100million.

Onyinyechi, the police said, had defrauded MIA Enterprises of the sum on the pretext of assisting the organisation to raise money for charity.

Police spokesman Abimbola Oyeyemi, a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), said Onyinyechi’s arrest followed a petition to Commissioner Ahmed Illiyasu, from the organisation’s lawyer, Godswill Ojakovo.

Oyeyemi said in a statement yesterday that the lawyer reported that the suspect claimed to have a Local Purchase Order (LPO) from a company known as Location 3 Properties and appealed to MIA Enterprises to fund the LPO.

“Consequently, N33,118,000 was transferred to her online,” Oyeyemi said.

He added: “While the organisation was awaiting the repayment of the above amount, the suspect came with other LPOs she purportedly got from Ancillia Catholic Hospital, Iju, Lagos and Holifull School, Ikorodu, Lagos, upon which another sum of N77 million was given to her after showing relevant documents and proof to back her claims.

“He stated further in the petition that as soon as she got the last payment in September 2018, the suspect disappeared. This prompted the church to make discreet enquiries about the LPOs submitted and found out that they were forged.”

Oyeyemi said Illiyasu, upon receipt of the petition, directed the monitoring team to go after the suspect, adding that she was trailed and arrested on January 21.

“The suspect confessed to the crime during interrogation. She admitted that the LPOs presented by her were forged, as most of the companies where she claimed to have gotten the LPOs were only imaginary. The CP has directed the team to arraign the suspect as soon as investigation is concluded,” said Oyeyemi.

  • Woman goes blind after broken bottle attack by her sister

    • Doctors remove hair attachment from her eye after it got embedded during fight
    • A shard of bottle got stuck in her cheek pinning her hair

A moment of fury between two sisters in Delta State has left one of them permanently blind in one eye.

The victim, 37, was allegedly attacked in the face with a broken bottle by her sister.

A shard of the glass got stuck in her upper cheek pinning the victim’s hair attachment in her eye socket.

She was rushed to Delta State University Teaching Hospital where doctors battled to extract the shard and the hair attachment from the eye socket, according to the London Mail.

It said the woman’s predicament was published by the medical journal BMJ Case Reports.

It quoted doctors as saying the unnamed victim was in an ‘anxious state’, because of the gaping wound in her cheek.

She was given local anaesthetic before surgeons pulled out the shard and  then stitched up the cuts on her eyelids.

A doctor from the teaching hospital, who reported the case in the  BMJ Case Reports, said the victim’s right eye was producing excessive amounts of fluid and intensely red, but her eyeball was mostly intact.

However, she suffered ‘irreversible’ damage to her cornea – the front of her eye – leaving it blinded and useless.

The hair attachment – believed to have been sliced off the woman’s weave during the attack – was sticking out of a diagonal slash beneath her eye.

The doctor did not include any details of the woman’s argument with her sister or any other injuries sustained in the vicious fight.

“The doctor’s report suggests the woman’s hair was hanging in front of her face and the plait became caught on the end of the glass during the stabbing,” the Mail said.

“It was then driven into the flesh beneath her eye and pinned there by a piece of glass which broke off what is presumed to be a bottle or drinking glass.”

It quoted the doctor as saying: “Although the patient had similar strands on her hair, the flexible nature of the strands further posed a challenge to the cause of the retention.

“The mechanism that introduced the woven artificial hair strands … is not clear but it is most likely that the hair was on the path of penetration of the broken glass at the time of the stab injury.”

“But about 3:45am, we heard a strange voice of ‘help me o’ from their apartment. The man was calling for help. Many of us could not open our doors until we heard the voices of some vigilante men in the area. When we got there, we saw the lady vomiting N500 notes.

“I would have doubted if I had not seen her myself. We’re all dumbfounded because we don’t know what to do. The N500 notes were coming out one after the other. It was through the effort of the pastor and some residents who were praying for her that she stopped.
